00:00you can always count on him in a fight even if it's 50 years later here's a
00:04look at the NECA this is the Dungeons & Dragons LJN 50th anniversary Elkhorn
00:09good dwarf fighter
00:12the fantasy comes alive with Dungeons & Dragons poseable action figures
00:30authentically reproduced so you can recreate the battle between good and
00:33evil LJN may have started the journey but it's NECA's finishing the quest
00:38before we get a closer look at the Dungeons & Dragons 50th anniversary
00:41Elkhorn I'd like to thank the folks over at NECA that were kind enough to
00:44provide this sample if you have been looking to finish your quest of
00:47collecting these these should now already be in stores or online the mold
00:52by the way is gonna be the same mold as the original Elkhorn that we've already
00:55gotten the ultimate release from NECA don't worry I'll be bringing him in
00:57for a second in the meantime though the tiny dwarf is gonna stand at what about
01:02a six six and a quarter inches in height or roughly about 16 centimeters tall
01:07yeah speaking of that other Elkhorn here's what the figure looks like with
01:10the ultimate release of him keeping though in mind that this one actually
01:13is based on the LG and original colors of the figure when he was first
01:16circulated in the 80s they have also added a whole lot more frills when it
01:21comes to the ultimate release of Elkhorn coming with a vast amount of accessories
01:24that weren't included with the original initial figure let's bring in some of
01:27the other LJN 50th anniversary releases of course he caught he's a colleague and
01:31comrade to strong heart we can bring him in and also here's what the figure
01:34looks like with war Duke if you were to go like to like apples to apples and
01:38dwarves to dwarves this version of Elkhorn would have actually shared three
01:41accessories with his ultimate counterpart wait a minute humbled reviewer I can't
01:45help but notice he's only got a dagger he's only got a broadsword what's the
01:48third accessory the figure really should have also come in clear with a shield
01:52now actually one this was shipped to me over by NECA toys I did note so when I
01:56opened up the box that Elkhorn's clamshell wasn't properly adhered to
02:01the back of the cardboard and it came loose inside the box I'm wondering
02:04though through that journey if unfortunately that version of Elkhorn
02:07ended up losing his shield because the figure should really technically come
02:10included with one I would though imagine it's probably this exact same casting
02:15here and more just done in a lighter gray it would have still the straps on
02:18the back that that would just fit up his arm but yeah technically the figure
02:21should technically have three accessories not just though the two that
02:25you're looking at right now those two accessories by the way though this would
02:28be kind of a small dagger weapon which happens to again be shared the same old
02:32as the ultimate release of it now the the guard in the hilt is done here in
02:37gold the LJN inspired one has this guard in like a yellow a broad like the
02:42actual handle here in brown and then a ruby red tip to that based on the
02:46at least at least the original toy the blade though technically should have
02:50been all yellow the guard should also be that same yellow and then the handle
02:54should then all be red but they still wanted to add a little bit of realism to
02:57it as well and not many people walk around with yellow bladed weapons the
03:01figure does also come include with a broad sword again to bring in the one we
03:05got from the ultimate same sword same sculpt different paint and again like
03:10this one would have been all done in yellow yellow guard a red handle I think
03:15actually to note the original LJN release going back to the dagger was
03:18already permanently molded to the side of his belt so I don't think you could
03:21actually have removed the dagger most definitely though the sword was
03:25standalone as well as his shield which again didn't have it within this
03:29figure one thing is rather interesting though about the dagger is it should
03:34really sheath on the side of his belt here's the sheath right here and
03:38actually let me just grab the ultimate release the sheath was placed on the
03:41exact same side I did notice that with mine at least when I was getting the
03:45dagger in there it sheaths fine I have no issues with it at all however though
03:50when it comes to this version of Elkhorn get him just to stand here for a second
03:54I have a real struggle and I'm looking at this and it doesn't look like the
03:57slits wide enough in fact I should just move his arm back a bit when I tried to
04:01get the dagger in here based without any you know customization I didn't
04:06actually open this up any more than what it was I can't get the blade in there I
04:09don't want to push it to the point you probably can already see here bending it
04:13the way that I did I started to kind of buckle the guard here I don't want to do
04:17that but does really seem like oh it's a struggle I can't get it all in there so
04:22I think I don't know if it's not completely I don't know if they actually
04:25have made enough of the inside of it open so the dagger will actually slide
04:30in place but I can't get it in place it doesn't seem to go any further than that
04:34you're probably thinking well wait a minute what if you turn around the other
04:36way you mean this way no no come on idiot the other this way no it now it
04:42just doesn't want to go in there so I don't want to fight it if I do end up
04:46fighting it it's only just to really keep the dagger permanently in there I'm
04:49gonna probably have no plans I'm gonna have probably no plans to remove it at
04:54all certainly though the sword where's the sword the swords right over here the
04:59sword I can get into his hand and obviously there's no sheath for this
05:01with actually the ultimate release the ultimate did have a sheath for the sword
05:05this version of it based at least on the original toy never would have had that
05:09so there's no sheath on the back of his body but easily though you can take the
05:13sword the fingers are at least soft enough in plastic you can pry them away
05:16from the palm and then just get the broadsword in his hand and probably I'll
05:20just probably end up displaying it like that if I don't really end up using the
05:23shield with this version of Elkhorn hey why not I'll just maybe include the
05:27shield with this guy on my display shelf let's go ahead and remove that so
05:32like if you're doing the tally counts you're looking at a shield you're
05:35looking at a sword there's really only two things that the LJN release would
05:38have had and again I don't know if the dagger was removable because in the
05:41package art of it it does show images of the original LJN only having the dagger
05:45already inside the sheath the actual figures themselves though I mean if you
05:50were looking at them I did actually change the head this wasn't the head I
05:53have on display with but this is the closest in proximity so you can see that
05:57the molds are exactly the same the armor is the same it's although it's a
06:00much more tamer approach with the silver the brown also as a much fairer color of
06:06brown instead of the dark check like chestnut brown that we're getting here
06:08for the ultimate release and notably too you can see his leg color it's kind of
06:12more of like an aquamarine versus that the original teal color that we got with
06:16the ultimate I feel though that like the colors on the LJN were kind of a color
06:20between the two it's not really quite this blue it really isn't quite this
06:24teal it's somewhere met in the middle I guess they really did want to make the
06:28colors a much brighter approach when it comes to this one because it is
06:30certainly a lot bluer than what it seems at least from the images I've looked at
06:34online by the way though too with this version of Elkhorn I'm just gonna put
06:38this figure down here if you were though lucky enough to get this guy over this
06:41guy I mean there's be a just a just a mass amount you'll see what I mean
06:46you'll see what I mean he came with a backpack this would just be attached
06:49onto the back of his body of course the figure already came in clue with a
06:52shield what else did he have he had a war hammer a broad blade battle axe a
06:58much bigger hammer a small axe no we're not done yet a torch he also came
07:04included with the reds red heart stone a little crystal and he also came included
07:10with a jug I think that's it I think that's it so let's just move those all
07:13out of the way yeah so while this figure is a little bit more bare bones the
07:17original LJN was also bare bones something also with this LJN release
07:21that he doesn't come included with is an alternate head sculpt which really
07:24only does change for the most part his mouth see how this one has the closed
07:28mouth this one has the open mouth this version of Elkhorn again a little more
07:32simpler only really relies on the closed mouth again it's the exact same body so
07:37there's nothing really changed at all there's a little bit obviously more blue
07:40now on his beard and where his helmet is it would now all be done in yellow where
07:45the version before with the ultimate release would have then relied on gold
07:49and then the light like the dark gray horns so there is some clearly cosmetic
07:54changes but if you were obviously collecting the LJN stuff back in the
07:5880s you may even favor this design of Elkhorn just a little bit more for the
08:03figures articulation Elkhorn's head is gonna be on a bulge right it stands to
08:06reason obviously that you can only really move the head back and forth up
08:10and down I mean it's pretty much null and void he does also still have the
08:13ponytail that has posability so you can move that back and forth as well as for
08:17his arms arms come out just shy of being a t-pose I guess if I fight it
08:22just a little bit more you can probably get a t-pose going that way the arms can
08:26move forward the arms can move back at least though the top of his armor is
08:30soft enough that even just to move the arm forward this seems very little in
08:34the way of resistance the arms swivel right here there's also double hinge
08:38there's a hinge and a hinge and collectively they work together like a
08:42pair you bend the arm about that far hands rotate all the way around there's
08:46a hinge back and forth for that the upper torso is gonna be on a ball joint
08:50I like to do splits there's ball joints working there as well like to go forward
08:54about that far they go back about that far swivel at the top of the thigh
08:58single hinge for the knee the lower leg does rotate boot actually is just a
09:03continuation of this sculpt here so you can't doesn't seem like you can turn
09:07that at all you can most definitely though ankle pivot and you can also
09:10hinge those back and forth to the figure does also have peg holes on the bombs of
09:15the state too so if you want to have the figure using a display stand use a
09:18display stand though the display stand isn't included with the figure let's
09:22bring back in here Elkhorn Elkhorn too I had a bit of an issue and I still kind
09:26of have an issue getting a head properly attached onto the ball joint I know again
09:30like I just swapped out the head and get in preparation for this review to get
09:33underway I mean really when it came to my Elkhorn on display I was usually then
09:37going back and relying on this head sculpt as being my favorite of the two
09:39the LJ and 50th anniversary Elkhorn doesn't have that extra head but what he
09:44does have though instead is the colors accurate to the original 80s toy release
09:48again unfortunately with mine mine was missing though the shield but with all
09:52the other things that the ultimate release did come carried with I probably
09:55may not ever really need the figure displayed with the shield and hey why
09:58not I could probably even just you have the figure displayed with a shield on
10:01the LJ and release lastly though let's bring in the other figures that we've
10:05already had a look at if by the way you already haven't had a chance to check
10:08out my other reviews of the LJ and 50th anniversary dungeons and dragons feel
10:12free to give that a good gander if you can this actually is I think there's
10:16only four figures for the 50th anniversary collection Zarak Zarak the
10:20evil half-orc assassin we will be by the way looking at this week as well so that
10:25will complete the quartets of dungeons and dragons figures we've gotten from
10:29NECA toys and I really do like the coloring of Elkhorn yeah the colors are
10:33a little bit more simpler in design but simpler translates to a more nostalgic
10:37looking figure when you have them standing on your shelf as you get older
10:41things like your memory tends to start to slip you remember things as a kid and
10:45then you start to think of yourself did I actually have that as a kid or was I
10:48thinking of a friend of mine that may have had that instead why I say that
10:52though is I feel I had a memory of owning an Elkhorn at one point not buying
10:56it brand new in retail but maybe perhaps buying it at a garage sale for like I
11:01want I would want to have said 25 cents 30 cents next to nothing obviously now
11:06I'm maybe even confusing that with a friend of mine that was in fact very
11:09heavily collecting anything Dungeons & Dragons and he had the original LG and
11:13stuff because I always went over there and played it at his house either way
11:16though I have some memory of Elkhorn as vague as it may sound so like having
11:21this one now in my collection being a more collectible more poseable certainly
11:26more detailed rendition of him it's kind of really again like nostalgic for me
11:30even though again like my memory of this is a little gray the figure does have
11:34for the most part all the same accessories as his original LG and
11:37counterpart short of again his shield which still now I'm gonna find myself
11:41going on my own quest trying to track down the whereabouts of the shield now
11:46we're already now three figures into the four figure sets of the 50 anniversary
11:49collection the only one that we're still gonna be looking at which will be coming
11:53up this week will be Zarak so if you guys did want to see the review of that
11:56I certainly hope though that you're gonna be coming back for that video
11:59backing up though a bit I'd like to thank the folks over at NECA toys yeah
12:03that did provide the sample of the Dungeons & Dragons LG and 50th
12:06anniversary collection Elkhorn the good dwarf fighter that we could have the
12:10chance to have a look in this review have you guys had any memories like that
12:13what do you think that you may have had something in your collection then you
12:17start to think about it it's like well no no no the guy down the street had it
12:20I used to go to his house every day at 3 o'clock then you start asking your
12:24mother and he says no no there was no kid that lived down the street and you're
12:27like where am I getting these memories from if you guys did enjoy this video you
12:31can do it a solid certainly throw it a like you guys won't stick around for
12:33more so I hope so hit that subscribe turn on that Bell and of course come
12:37back yeah as always thanks for watching guys see you next time
