00:00Oh, oh good. He's 17. Here's a look at the brand-new Hyatt toys. This is the Star Trek 2009 exquisite mini-series Chekhov.
00:06In the film, Chekhov is renowned for his intelligence and technical skills. Serving as
00:29communications officer responsible for communicating with other ships and entities, his Russian accent
00:34and humor lighten up the atmosphere during crisis. In some situations, he takes on the role of
00:39navigator, aiding and guiding the Enterprise through interstellar space. I really hope this
00:43review can move forward without needing his Ensign authorization code. Speaking of moving forward, I
00:47guess before moving forward, I'd like to also thank the folks over at Hyatt toys that provided
00:51though the sample of the exquisite mini-series Star Trek 2009 Ensign Chekhov that we can have a
00:56look at in this review. Taking though the tape measure, he's gonna stand about the same as the
00:59other exquisite mini-series figures we've already had a look at. Don't worry, I will be bringing
01:03those in a second. Yeah, he's about three and three quarters of an inch in height, working out to be a
01:07figure that's about nine and a half centimeters tall. Wait a minute, wait a minute, wait a minute,
01:11you're saying that there were other Star Trek 2009 exquisite mini-series from Hyatt toys? Yeah,
01:16we've already had a look at Captain James T. Kirk. I think in this proper order as well, we also
01:21looked at Mr. Spock, and then just before moving over to Chekhov, we also looked at Dr. McCoy. No
01:27final frontier in sight when it comes to these accessories, as I think all the ones we get here
01:31with Chekhov were ones we already got with either Kirk, McCoy or Spock. We're also as well, I think,
01:36getting an exquisite mini-series of Scotty, and I would imagine some of these accessories will get
01:40borrowed over to him as well. First though, Chekhov does come included with a display stand. I really
01:44like these stands because they look like a view screen inside of the Enterprise. It just so
01:48happens though to be exact same stands we've already got with the other three figures that
01:51are just over there right now. If you look at the stands on the top side, you can see there's the
01:55Star Trek symbol, the Starfleet symbol on the bottom of it though. The thing I really like
01:59about it too is that not only does it have Star Trek on the bottom, but also too a placement of
02:04slots. There's two here, there's two here, here and rinse and repeat down here as well. Included as
02:09well with all these Star Trek exquisite mini-series, you get these eye brackets. I'll quickly put it
02:14inside the slot. I just want to show you guys what they look like individually. Not all that exciting,
02:18no. I know it's just a big capital T, but they do serve at least the purpose. If you plug them into
02:22any one of those slots, if you get another one of these, which I just happen to have another three,
02:26plug them in place and now instantly like that you've got yourself multiple display stands
02:30connected together. It isn't so much though like terrain, like for example we've looked at the
02:35G.I. Joe's, where you could realistically add more and more of these together and we just look like
02:39a big giant battlefield. With this though being so specific like screens, having more of these
02:44connected together, I don't think it loses some of the illusion. I think I would rather have just
02:48had these displayed separately. In fact, actually most of my exquisite mini-series figures, I tend
02:52just only have them on their stands on their own. G.I. Joe's and like Predators and stuff like that
02:57are the only times I really have combined the stands together. Anybody really care? Oh, this
03:02guy cares. This guy cares over here. No, this guy doesn't care. This guy doesn't care. Oh, you, you
03:07really don't care. You're like just like move this along. Okay, we'll move this along. The figure does
03:12also come in clear with a communicator. Now it's actually funny that we're working smaller here
03:16because just up to this point, last week I think, or the week before, we looked at the exquisite super
03:21series of Star Trek characters Kirk, Spock and McCoy. It's funny though enough that we're also
03:26looking at a smaller version of Chekhov because slated to release, I don't know if it's dropping
03:30anytime soon, but we're gonna be also getting exquisite super series of Chekhov. But all of
03:34them, by the way, would have had a communicator a little bit bigger than this. Chekhov's communicator
03:37is a little bit smaller because of course he's a smaller character. It does fit into his hands. Now
03:42he has already a hand out of the packaging that really seems like the best fit for this. You take
03:46this pop-tart shaped communicator. I really don't like the communicators from the 2009 film. You can
03:51either put in his hand. You could, I mean, really be confusing the poor person on the other end of
03:56this. Sorry, what are you saying? You can put a communicator in his hand or what you can also do
04:01too, providing you still have the belt on him because the belt is removable. Just kind of move
04:05his arm out of the way. You can take the communicator and slide it into the holster. You know
04:09what? Let's just move this arm the other way. There we go. That's gonna make things a little bit
04:13easier. Take the communicator and if I had hands the size of his, this would make things so
04:19much easier. But basically you just take the communicator. How many times we're gonna do this?
04:23And that just holsters in to get in there. Get in there. There we go. Just fits in the holster like
04:28that. No easy job at all. What might be a little more of an easier job, the figure does also come
04:33included with his phaser. The phaser does have the, I guess, the kill setting on the inside. That's
04:38good. It's set to safety or I guess set to stun. It's a nice silver phaser of course and he doesn't
04:44have necessarily really the hands right now to hold this, but he will in a second. Again, he
04:49also has this holster on the opposite side of the belt where the phaser is a lot easier to fit
04:54in place. Now this probably, if he's gonna be helming, I guess not really helming, if he's gonna
04:59be piling the Enterprise from the front console, he probably isn't gonna be wearing this belt.
05:03This belt is better suited, I think, if he's gonna be going on away missions. The belt is removal if
05:08you guys are interested. Simply all you really have to do is just kind of move first of all his
05:12arms. Get his arms out of the way. Take maybe the phaser out of the way as well and there is, can
05:17you see right there, there's a loop and then there's part of the plastic that fits inside the
05:21loop. All you have to do is just detach this like that and it's a lot easier to remove it than is
05:28to put it back together. Again, you just kind of slot it in place. Oh, oh, I think I actually did a
05:33better job this time. Just plug it back in place, but for this we're just gonna detach it all
05:37together. I'm just gonna put it off to the side. For me, I generally like to put all my Star Trek
05:41figures from high. I like to have them really non going to a planet and sort of just displayed as
05:46if we had ourselves a USS Enterprise. I would love if we could get ourselves a USS Enterprise
05:51diorama set. Something just so that the crew could actually sit around. I'm not sure if Haya Toys
05:55would ever think that far ahead when it comes to actually doing Star Trek figures if they are
05:58gonna do a diorama to go along with them. The figure does also have some swappable hands. I
06:03guess we for this we can probably put the figure back down for a second. He has a closed gripped
06:09hand or fist and he also has a specifically dedicated phaser hand. Boy, these are so small.
06:15Changing out the hands though isn't a super hard thing to do. You're basically just gonna detach it
06:20from the peg, take the hand that you want to then use, and just put it back on the peg. That's all
06:26you really have to do. Because everything though is so much smaller, there's always been the risk
06:31that this is gonna fall on the floor. I'm not gonna jinx it by saying this, but this basically
06:36I know I've just already jinxed it by saying this, but basically this would just plug onto the peg.
06:41One thing I will say, and I haven't yet changed this hands in full disclosure, this has happened
06:47actually just recently. We looked at Flint from G.I. Joe and the problem actually is one thing I
06:52didn't even prep this review by doing. See how the hole is a little bit smaller than the peg? For
06:57Flint's hand, even though it was G.I. Joe, I took myself a screwdriver and I just doweled that a
07:01little bit bigger. You could also even heat this even in hot water, but putting it on the peg the
07:07way that is intended, it's not the easiest thing to do. You know what? Bear with me, I'm gonna just
07:12put the hand back on in place. I'm gonna fix this for the final looks of the figure, but for right
07:16now we're just gonna leave just the relaxed hand. That's my fault. I really should have
07:20doweled that first. Yeah, heat this up first in hot water or again you can go with just a tiny
07:25little screwdriver. We don't have to destroy this thing, just make the hole just a little bit bigger.
07:29You might find it a lot easier to get it onto the peg. Getting a closer look though at
07:34Chekhov, not a bad likeness. I will admit though the Exquisite Super Series does a better job of
07:40landing the likeness of all these characters. To compare it like with Kirk, for example, I think
07:46the face is good. I think maybe where it loses some of that already mentioned likeness is with
07:52the paint. I think the paint just being so, I don't wanna say pasty, but certainly is chalky like
07:57this. It really needed some contrasting colors. I think for at least what we've looked at so far,
08:02I'm just gonna kind of grab all of them at least if I can. Spock's was probably one of the better
08:06looking likenesses. Can I still hold on to all of these? McCoy probably was maybe the weakest
08:11likeness at least of this size class. Chekhov sort of meets somewhere I think in the middle of Spock
08:16and maybe Kirk. It's not a bad likeness at all, but I certainly don't feel like it probably could
08:23have been a bit better of a head had the paint just not let it down a little bit. The head does
08:29certainly have a lot of decent poseability. We're gonna of course talk about all that in a second.
08:33Of course, you got yourself the Star Trek symbol uniform as well. I don't really love the 2009
08:38uniforms having though the fact that they have these tiny little symbols making up the majority
08:42of the fabric. It's unnecessary. Just keep the fabric simple. There's some panel lining that
08:47they've done nicely there on the top. And of course, he's got also his little, not the tunic,
08:51but I guess like the little turtleneck shirt that they wear underneath. This, by the way,
08:55is all soft and plastic. So that one of the benefits at least of using soft plastic like
08:59this is it doesn't limit any of the articulation. Even though really like the articulation anyways,
09:04you're not gonna be limited there. But it seems like they are probably using a regular body
09:08underneath and then they're just putting over whatever tunic color they need to do depending
09:12on what member of Starfleet we're looking at here. Though as a side note, it's obviously really sad
09:18too that we had to lose the actor Anton. He's gonna come to me. He'll come to me in the final
09:23looks of the figure. It's sad though that he passed away. I mean, the only thing I really
09:27know him from outside of Star Trek was also Fright Night. And he was also a really decent John,
09:32not John Connor. He was also John Blank from Terminator. Reese, Kyle Reese. He was also Kyle
09:40Reese in Terminator Salvation. Yeah, the figure as a whole, I think it does a decent enough likeness
09:46to the actor. I will though definitely be more excited I feel for the Exquisite Super Series.
09:50I still like the size class of Exquisite Mini Series. But I think that Super Series I think
09:55right now is really where Hayato is doing some of the best likenesses. And of course,
09:59like they're getting real fabric as opposed to the plastic costumes that they're getting here.
10:03Now for the figures articulation. So Chekhov's gonna have a ball joint obviously in his head.
10:08So that's gonna allow the head to rotate all the way around. It can look up only by that high,
10:11not too much. It can look down obviously that low as well. And you can move it back and forth.
10:16Is it Anton Yetchlin? I'm gonna look it up. Somebody's probably already telling me down
10:21below in the comments section. Thank you, by the way, for the participation. Still feel the need
10:24to correct me if that, you know, if that's not the actor's name, let me know down below. But
10:27anyways, you get yourself a T pose easily on the shoulders here. The arms rotate all the way around.
10:32Now one thing though, because the tunic is a separate piece, there is obvious areas there
10:37where you can see like there's a gap space where the arms are plastic. And then of course,
10:41the tunic part is more of a softer plastic. There is again, a little bit of a swivel there in the
10:46forearm. There's also the single hinge in the elbow. No issues there. The hands rotate all the
10:49way around, providing of course, you get the proper hands on there. Upper torso bulge, right?
10:53Legs split out so easily. I mean, I mean, that's a, that's an easy splits. Legs go forward. That's,
10:58he's like, that's what you can say. Legs move forward and back. No issues there. You can swivel
11:03at the top of the thigh. A double hinge on the knee. There's articulation here as well for the
11:08boot. That being that this is a separate piece from the rest of the calf, that easily rotates
11:12all the way around. Hinge up and down for the ankle. And there is also an ankle rocker. Even
11:18though I think my love for what Hai is doing right now, more is to the Exquisite Super Series,
11:22because again, like we are getting ourselves a check off in that size class too. Not everybody
11:26is going to be collecting like that 112 scale. Like some of them may be more interested and
11:31invested in getting the smaller three and three quarter inch scale. And I think for that,
11:35I think that I have to have some respect obviously for Hai Toys, that they are releasing size classes
11:39for two different types of collectors. I just happen to be the collector that likes to have
11:43both size classes. I will say though, like for the smaller class, the likeness isn't the best,
11:48but I think it's still pretty close. And I will say like Chekhov probably looks more like the
11:52actor than it may be like the case of Bones. Bones, I think at least from what we've looked
11:56at, because there's also going to be a Scotty that's going to get released as well. Scotty may,
12:00Bones may have maybe the weakest likeness of the four figures here. Chekhov I think is kind of in
12:05between, well, he's essentially really in between Spock being the best likeness. Captain Kirk wasn't
12:09so bad. He is definitely one of the better looking likenesses that we've gotten. And of course,
12:14again, too, if you're looking to collect specifically three and three quarter inch scale,
12:19Hai Toys has been doing it for a while now, really perfecting the art of releasing small scale
12:22figures that have tons of accessories. Again, in this case, the Star Trek 2009 movie specific
12:29accessories, it's a nice figure. I don't have a fault with it other than, again, I'm more really
12:35liking the exquisite supersuits because again, you get the real fabric. The likenesses I think
12:39are a little bit better, but if you are still collecting the smaller scale line, Hai Toys still
12:43has you covered. The actor I was trying to think of was Anton Yelchin, and actually surprisingly,
12:48he passed away June 19, 2016. Here, thinking that he had actually just passed recently,
12:54you start to look at that, he died almost 10 years ago. When even really, when you think of Star
12:59Trek, Star Trek came out in 2009. We're already now coming up to the 16th anniversary of that
13:05first film, and still there's talks of doing a fourth film. Obviously, they may either have to
13:11recast or just completely rewrite out Chekhov into the fourth film. It's a sad thing too,
13:16because I thought that Anton did a great job of pulling off not only just the likeness, but also
13:21the voice mannerisms of Chekhov. Now, also one thing too, wrapping up the review of him,
13:26I was managed, I was able to at least heat up that hand, because remember we had a little bit
13:30of the issue where the peg hole wasn't properly sized. Yeah, I took a screwdriver, just made the
13:34hole a little bit bigger. I heated a few seconds just with a hairdryer, just to soften up the
13:38plastic, just to ensure proper snappage, well, maybe snappage isn't the best word, proper
13:43clippage onto the peg on the ends of his form. Now, of course, he can hold his phaser. Now,
13:48you can either choose to have any of these figures, because I think all of them have had a
13:51weigh-team belt. For me at least, I just generally like to consider that all of them are right now
13:55sitting inside the Enterprise. None of them are going to be walking around with belts anyways,
13:58so I just usually just have those extra weigh-team belts. I put them in a separate
14:02standalone little bag. I even write on that Star Trek. I don't know why I felt the need to write
14:06Star Trek on there, but I have them already stored away with all the other accessories I don't
14:10currently have displayed with the characters. By the way though, I do also have them all with
14:14their display stands. The display stands can be all connected together, but with the fact that
14:20they all kind of look like view screens, I don't think it really works to connect all of them.
14:24It certainly does connect better when you've got the Predator figures, you've got the G.I. Joe
14:28figures, because the terrain is just so neutral. It doesn't look like it has to be anything other
14:33than just mud, so you can get away with attaching multiple of those together. But because this is
14:38so specifically an outline frame view screen, I don't think it really works as well to connect
14:43them together, but you don't have to do that. You can just leave them separately though as you wish
14:47if you're collecting these for yourself. Now again, like this one, I noticed though with Chekhov,
14:52many of the sites seem to have sold out on him. I don't know if people were just scooping him up
14:56because they liked Chekhov, or because again like the actor Anton had passed away. He is a little
15:01harder, I think, to find over the other exquisite miniseries figures that have come out, but if you
15:05are certainly collecting the exquisite miniseries, Chekhov obviously is a well-welcomed addition to
15:10the growing army, well I should not say growing army, the growing ranks of Starfleet. There's
15:16talks of course that we are going to be getting ourselves an exquisite miniseries of Scotty,
15:19and on the flip end of that, if you're only really more collecting the super series,
15:23there is an exquisite super series Chekhov in the pipeline, or I guess in the transporter stream.
15:29Something. McCoy wouldn't want to be in the transporter stream. Chekhov's all fine for that.
15:33Big thank you again to the folks over at Hi Toys that did provide the sample of the new Star Trek
15:372009 exquisite miniseries Chekhov that we could actually check off on our list of ones we've
15:42already had a look at here on this review. Boo! That was terrible. If you guys did enjoy this
15:46video, do it a song, throw it a like. You guys wanna stick around for more so? I hope so. Hit
15:50that subscribe, turn on that bell, and of course, come back. As always, thanks for watching. See you
15:55guys next time.
