00:00U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday slapped a new 25% import tax on cars and car parts
00:07coming into the U.S.
00:09Trump said the latest tariffs would come into effect on the 2nd and 3rd of April, with charges
00:14on parts set to start in May or later.
00:17He claimed the tariffs would foster domestic manufacturing.
00:21Anywhere from $600 billion to $1 trillion will be taken in over the relatively short-term
00:29period, meaning a year from now.
00:33Following the announcements, the U.S. stock markets dipped and reactions poured from
00:37the EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney.
00:50Analysts have warned the move is likely to lead to the temporary shutdown of significant
01:13car production in the U.S. and could widen the global trade war.
01:21French President Emmanuel Macron has pledged an additional €2 billion in military aid
01:27to Ukraine.
01:28The announcement came during a press conference in Paris on Wednesday evening ahead of a high-stakes
01:33international summit on Ukraine's long-term security this Thursday.
01:37According to the French leader, strengthening Ukraine's military remains a top priority.
02:21Delegations from around 30 countries are expected in Paris to take part in Thursday's summit
02:27to form what has been termed the Coalition of the Willing that could offer to maintain
02:32a future ceasefire in Ukraine.
02:38Turkey's president has accused the opposition of sinking the economy as massive protests
02:43against the arrest of Istanbul's mayor continue.
02:48The party of detained mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu called for boycott of companies that it says
02:53support President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government.
02:57İmamoğlu was arrested last week and faces charges related to corruption and terrorism.
03:18Many consider İmamoğlu's arrest to be politically motivated and a way to remove a major challenger
03:25to Erdogan ahead of presidential elections scheduled for 2028.
03:32His detention sparked the largest wave of street demonstrations in Turkey in more than
03:37a decade and deepened concerns over democracy and the rule of law.
03:43Having entered a two-month ceasefire, Israel is now reportedly planning a bigger ground
03:49operation in Gaza, which could involve sending tens of thousands of troops to clear and then
03:54occupy large portions of the enclave.
03:57Almost a year and a half since Hamas' brutal attack of the 7th of October, Israeli Prime
04:02Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems to be more determined and more empowered than ever to
04:09achieve the stated goals of dismantling of Hamas' governing and military capabilities
04:14and removing any future threat from Gaza.
04:18But the questions are increasingly being asked, including from the people of Israel, whether
04:23this would help bring back Israeli hostages or it could put their lives into even a bigger
04:29danger while at the same time chasing more devastation and death in Gaza.
04:38Israel believes 24 hostages are still alive and being held in Gaza.
04:43Ron Segev, a survivor of the Novo Music Festival attack, says releasing them remains the main
04:49goal of the people and it has not changed.
04:53I know that it's been one and a half years since that day and some people go back to
05:01their normal life, but I can tell you that us, the survivors, we will not move on until
05:11everyone will get back.
05:13I don't know about the goals of the government, but the people, for the people, that's the
05:18main goal, the only goal.
05:21Thomas Hand, whose 10-year-old daughter was released after 50 days in Hamas captivity,
05:28says he does not believe diplomacy can help release the hostages.
05:34The only reason we got the first phase was through military action where they felt that
05:41they were going to be wiped out.
05:44I have asked him whether the recent protests in Gaza against Hamas mean there is hope for
05:50a change from within.
05:53There is a hope because they're actually risking their lives to do it.
05:57They're civilians, let's say, going against an armed terrorist organisation.
06:03They will be crushed.
06:06They don't have a chance, no.
06:08Maybe in the future if the UN, Egyptian army, Israeli army go in as an international army,
06:20they could back them up and maybe we can get rid of Hamas that way.
06:28Palestinians in Gaza have staged a rare public protest against Hamas, calling for the militant
06:34group to end the war.
06:37Video circulating online showed hundreds of people marching in an anti-war rally in northern
06:42Gaza, chanting slogans like Hamas out and holding signs saying stop the war.
06:49The protests reportedly also spread to other parts of the enclave, with some taking place
06:53as far south as Khan Yunis, according to online users.
06:58One protester said that while the rallies may not end the Israeli occupation, they could
07:02pressure Hamas to make concessions.
07:05Rights groups accuse Hamas of violently suppressing dissent, quashing protests in the areas it
07:11controls and jailing and torturing critics.
07:15The protests erupted a week after Israel ended the ceasefire with Hamas by launching
07:19a surprise wave of strikes, which killed hundreds of people.
07:28Slovakia continues to rid the country of animals infected with foot and mouth disease, after
07:33a state of emergency was declared across the whole country on Tuesday.
07:40Disinfection mats have been installed at border crossings with Hungary, while veterinarians
07:45and police are monitoring the situation in the field.
07:50The new outbreak of the disease has been detected in Hungary, approximately 15 kilometers from
07:55the Slovak border, near Bratislava.
07:59Slovakia's Minister of Agriculture confirmed on Tuesday morning a fourth case in the southwest
08:04of the country.
08:07Record-breaking rains in March have brought relief to Spain after a stubborn drought last
08:14year.
08:15Spain received more than double the normal amount of monthly rainfall in the first 18
08:19days of this month.
08:21That included normally arid regions like Andalusia, where floods forced hundreds to evacuate.
08:29The blessing and the cause of Spanish climate is exactly that.
08:35Climate is exactly that.
08:36We have these periods of extended drought that are usually ended with these kind of
08:42situations.
08:45Having said that, the rain we had in March, especially in the, well, excluding the northwestern,
08:52has been quite exceptional in most areas.
08:57For now, the drought that began in 2023 is over.
09:01How long water reserves remain healthy depends on how much more springtime rain Spain gets
09:06and the heat of this summer.
09:08Scientists say climate change is making the swings between dryness and downpour more acute,
09:13as rising temperatures trigger extreme weather, like prolonged drought and intense rainfall.
09:21Brazil's Supreme Court accepted charges against former President Jair Bolsonaro over an alleged
09:28attempted coup to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat.
09:35The five justices voted unanimously to put Bolsonaro on trial on five counts, including
09:41involvement in an armed criminal organization.
09:59Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and says he's being politically persecuted.
10:12Under Brazilian law, a coup conviction alone carries a sentence of up to 12 years.
10:19When combined with the other charges the former president faces, it could result in a sentence
10:24of decades behind bars.
10:29A woman accusing French actor Gérard Depardieu of sexual assault told a trial on Wednesday
10:37that he groped her several times in three separate incidents on set.
10:42Day three of the trial focused on the testimony of the woman who said she was alone with Depardieu
10:47for a moment near a film set when she was assaulted.
10:51Depardieu denies any sexual assault.
10:58Depardieu acknowledged that he used vulgar and sexualized language with one plaintiff.
11:13He said he grabbed her hips during an argument but denied that his behavior was sexual.
11:28The French actor faces up to five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euro if he's convicted.
