00:32On a visit to an American military base in Greenland, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance
00:37accused Denmark of not doing a good job protecting the territory.
00:41There was a lot of criticism from Denmark, a lot of attacks at the Trump administration,
00:46at the president, at me, at others in our administration for saying the obvious, which
00:51is that Denmark hasn't done a good job at keeping Greenland safe.
00:56Relations between the U.S. and Greenland have soured after U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly
01:01suggested that the United States should come to control the semi-autonomous Danish territory.
01:07Vance said the U.S. has no option but to take a significant position to ensure the security
01:12of Greenland as he encouraged a push for independence from Denmark.
01:17He was joined by his wife and other senior U.S. officials in a trip that was scaled back
01:22after an uproar among Greenlanders and Danes who were irked that the original itinerary
01:26was planned without consulting them.
01:35The German government coalition talks have reached a new level according to the party
01:39leaders in Berlin on Friday.
01:42Germany's next potential chancellor, Friedrich Merz, said that there are still hurdles to
01:46overcome but that he is confident that the parties will manage it.
01:51The CDU leader is keen to form a government before Easter but negotiations are proving
01:55tricky.
01:56Currently, the Christian Democrats and Social Democrats are disagreeing on how to finance
02:01the election campaign promises, namely if tax for higher earners or corporations will
02:05be raised.
02:06They are also yet to come to an agreement about pensions and conscription.
02:11However, following the challenges that Germany is facing both with the economy and with Donald
02:16Trump as U.S. president, both parties are under pressure to form a government and elect
02:21a chancellor as soon as possible, so concessions may need to be made on both sides.
02:27Liv Stroud in Berlin for Euronews.
02:36Several people have died and dozens remain missing in Thailand after a 7.7 magnitude
02:41earthquake caused a high-rise building in Bangkok to collapse.
02:47Bangkok's city hall declared the city a disaster area to facilitate the response.
02:54People all over the city evacuated buildings and were cautioned to stay outside in case
02:58of more aftershocks.
03:01In Myanmar, where the earthquake had its epicenter, over 100 people died, according to state media.
03:08The extent of death, injury and destruction was not immediately clear as the country is
03:13embroiled in a civil war with information tightly controlled.
03:18Myanmar's government said blood was in high demand in the hardest-hit areas.
03:23The earthquake reportedly brought down multiple buildings, including Mandalay's largest monastery,
03:28and burst a dam in the city.
03:36Israel has launched its first attack on the Lebanese capital, Beirut, since a ceasefire
03:41ended fighting with Hezbollah in November.
03:44The IDF warned people to evacuate prior to the attack, vowing to retaliate for strikes
03:50they say were launched from Lebanon into Israel.
03:55Militant group Hezbollah denied firing these rockets and accused Israel of seeking a pretext
04:01to renew attacks.
04:04Meanwhile in Gaza, the health ministry said a family of six and a Hamas spokesman were
04:09killed in separate Israeli strikes in the north of the Strip.
04:15More than 800 people have been killed by Israel since it broke its ceasefire with Hamas last
04:20week.
04:22Israel blamed the renewed hostilities on Hamas' refusal to release more hostages before negotiations
04:29on ending the war proceed.
04:31Hamas has said it will only release the remaining captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners,
04:37a lasting ceasefire and an Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
