00:00World leaders will gather in Paris on Thursday for a high-stakes summit in a
00:04coalition of willing format to lay the groundwork for long-term security
00:07guarantees in Ukraine. Turkey's president accused the opposition of
00:13sinking the economy as massive protests against the arrest of Istanbul's mayor
00:18continue. U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance has said he will join his wife Usha on a
00:25controversial trip to Greenland this week.
00:30Record-breaking rains in March have brought relief to Spain after a stubborn
00:35drought last year.
00:39World leaders will gather in Paris on Thursday morning for a high-stakes
00:44summit to lay the groundwork for long-term security guarantees in Ukraine.
00:51According to the LSA Palace, 31 countries will be represented from the EU as well
00:56as NATO member states such as the UK, Norway and Turkey. On Wednesday evening
01:02French President Emmanuel Macron will host his Ukrainian counterpart
01:06Volodymyr Zelensky to start preparing for the summit.
01:10So what are some of the key topics that will be discussed on Thursday morning?
01:15Well the first major goal is to bolster military and financial aid for Ukraine
01:21with each participating country expected to say exactly how much they are willing
01:27to give. The second point is to obtain a complete ceasefire, an idea which has
01:33already been accepted by Ukraine but not by Russia. And perhaps the most sensitive
01:39topic will be whether or not to establish a reassurance force so that
01:44means whether or not to send peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. That's
01:48an idea that is strongly backed by France and the UK but met with
01:52opposition when it comes to countries like Poland and Italy. And despite the
01:57rising tensions between the US and the EU, French President Macron is a set to
02:03brief US President Donald Trump on the outcomes of the summit.
02:07Turkey's president has accused the opposition of sinking the economy as
02:16massive protests against the arrest of Istanbul's mayor continue. The party of
02:22detained Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu called for boycott of companies that it says
02:27support President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's government. İmamoğlu was arrested last
02:32week and faces charges related to corruption and terrorism.
02:53Many consider İmamoğlu's arrest to be politically motivated and a way to remove
02:59a major challenger to Erdogan ahead of presidential elections scheduled for
03:042028. His detention sparked the largest wave of street demonstrations in Turkey
03:11in more than a decade and deepened concerns over democracy and the rule of
03:16law. US Vice President JD Vance has said he will join his wife Usha on a
03:27controversial trip to Greenland this week.
03:29And you know there was so much excitement around Usha's visit to
03:33Greenland this Friday that I decided that I didn't want her to have all that
03:37fun by herself and so I'm gonna join her. I'm gonna visit some of our guardians in
03:41the Space Force on the northwest coast of Greenland and also just check out
03:45what's going on with the security there of Greenland. The US delegation is
03:49scaling back its itinerary with a space base visit after the unsolicited trip
03:54drew international criticism. Usha Vance initially planned to attend the
03:58national dog sled race and see Greenland's historical sites. Greenland's
04:03Prime Minister called the visit highly aggressive and his Danish counterpart
04:07echoed the sentiment a day later by saying the US is putting unacceptable
04:11pressure on Greenland. US President Donald Trump insisted that the visit is
04:16about friendliness not provocation.
04:20Serbian state authorities have until the 31st of March to respond to the
04:26European Court of Human Rights for the alleged use of sonic weapons against
04:31protesters two weeks ago. However President Vucic reassured the EU on
04:39Tuesday night that the allegations were not true.
04:51Anti-government mass protests have been going on in Serbia for months mainly
05:01against corruption and local oligarchs. Top EU officials are embarrassed since
05:05Vucic has been one of their main interlocutors in the Western Balkans for
05:09almost 10 years. But for this MEP there doesn't seem to be any other
05:14alternatives. For the moment I see the logic to speak with Vucic because there
05:18are no strong alternatives clearly defined clearly visible alternatives in
05:23Serbia in Serbia politics and that's a problem but the reason why that is
05:26the case is that definitely European Union has neglected the situation in
05:30Southeast Europe especially the last 10 to 15 years that that enlargement policy
05:35was definitely completely marginal topic until the war in Ukraine started.
05:41However the European Union plays the card of the appeasement again in the
05:47Western Balkans with Serbia especially in order to avoid any additional problem
05:53in a region that could become again a source of tensions for the entire Europe.

06:05Slovakia continues to rid the country of animals infected with foot and mouth
06:10disease. After a state of emergency was declared across the whole country on
06:14Tuesday. Disinfection mats have been installed at border crossings with
06:20Hungary while veterinarians and police are monitoring the situation in the
06:24field. The new outbreak of the disease has been detected in Hungary approximately
06:3115 kilometers from the Slovak border near Bratislava. Slovakia's Minister of
06:38Agriculture confirmed on Tuesday morning a fourth case in the southwest of the
06:42country.
06:48Record-breaking rains in March have brought relief to Spain after a
06:52stubborn drought last year. Spain received more than double the normal
06:56amount of monthly rainfall in the first 18 days of this month. That included
07:02normally arid regions like Andalusia where floods forced hundreds to evacuate.
07:08The blessing and the curse of Spanish climate is exactly that we have these
07:14periods of extended drought that are usually ended with these kind of
07:20situations. Having said that the rain we had in March especially in the well
07:27excluding the northwestern has been quite exceptional in most areas. For now
07:35the droughts that began in 2023 is over. How long water reserves remain healthy
07:40depends on how much more springtime rain Spain gets and the heat of this summer.
07:45Scientists say climate change is making the swings between dryness and downpour
07:49more acute as rising temperatures trigger extreme weather like prolonged
07:53droughts and intense rainfall.
07:58An ongoing eruption of Hawaii's most active volcano restarted again on
08:03Tuesday when lava began pouring out of a vent in the caldera. Kilauea has been
08:08erupting on and off since the end of December shooting tall fountains of lava
08:12into the air and spilling molten rock across the caldera floor each time it's
08:17come back to life. Hawaii Volcanoes National Parks said the latest eruption
08:21wasn't affecting any residential areas. The current episode is the 15th of the
08:26ongoing eruption which has been a popular attraction for tourists.
08:33Wind-driven wildfires in the southern regions of South Korea have killed at
08:38least 18 people and forced thousands to evacuate. They were among the worst ever
08:43recorded in the country. Thousands of firefighters, soldiers and other
08:48personnel worked to extinguish the fires on Wednesday after strong winds caused
08:53them to spread overnight. An ancient Buddhist temple was destroyed as well as
08:58houses, factories and vehicles as the fires burned over 43,000 acres of land.
09:08Brazil's Supreme Court accepted charges against former president Jair Bolsonaro
09:14over an alleged attempted coup to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat.
09:21The five justices voted unanimously to put Bolsonaro on trial on five counts
09:27including involvement in an armed criminal organization.
09:52Bolsonaro has repeatedly denied wrongdoing and says he's being
09:56politically persecuted. Under Brazilian law, a coup conviction alone carries a
10:03sentence of up to 12 years. When combined with the other charges the former
10:09president faces, it could result in a sentence of decades behind bars.
10:19A woman accusing French actor Gerard Depardieu of sexual assault told the trial on
10:24Wednesday that he groped her several times in three separate incidents on set.
10:29Day three of the trial focused on the testimony of the woman who said she was
10:33alone with Depardieu for a moment near a film set when she was assaulted.
10:38Depardieu denies any sexual assault.
10:55Depardieu acknowledged that he used vulgar and sexualized language with one
10:59plaintiff. He said he grabbed her hips during an argument but denied that his
11:04behavior was sexual.
11:24The French actor faces up to five years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euro if
11:32he's convicted.
