In a Fox News interview Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said he thinks it's 'easier' to deal with a liberal leader in Canada. In response, Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre said he's a 'tough guy' who can take on Trump.

00:00So, Karina, let's start with Polyev's visit to Sudbury, Ontario.
00:03Yes.
00:04So, he was in Northern Ontario to talk about how to develop and do it more quickly Northern
00:11Ontario's Ring of Fire, which is a source, a great source of critical minerals, if only
00:17we could get to it and extract them.
00:20But in light of Donald Trump's comments about not only Canada, which he made to Fox News,
00:28but on Pierre Polyev himself, Polyev clearly saw it fit to bring it up in terms of a response
00:35to what was said.
00:36So, let's back up a moment.
00:37U.S. President Donald Trump was on Fox News, and the host, Laura Ingram, suggested to Trump
00:45that the Liberals here in Canada were more likely to win the election now, at least that's
00:51what she said based on polls that she was looking at.
00:55And wouldn't that mean that Canada, under the Liberals, would be more hostile to the
01:00U.S. going forward?
01:02Here is part of Trump's response.
01:05The conservative that's running is stupidly no friend of mine.
01:09I don't know him, but he said negative things.
01:10So, when he says negative things, I couldn't care less.
01:13I think it's easier to deal, actually, with a Liberal.
01:17And maybe they're going to win, but I don't really care.
01:19It doesn't matter to me at all.
01:22So this comes on the heels of Trump saying a couple weeks ago that Poliev was not a MAGA
01:28guy, which I think came on the same day that he also tried to help Wayne Gretzky out of
01:34the quagmire that was going on with Wayne Gretzky and trying to defend Wayne Gretzky,
01:40that he believed in Canadian sovereignty.
01:44So Poliev, at that point, responded saying he agreed with Trump that he was not a MAGA
01:49guy and making sure that that differentiation was there.
01:54Again, today, as I mentioned, Pierre Poliev bringing up his response to Trump's comments
02:02on him.
02:03Have a listen to what he had to say.
02:05The president said that having a Liberal prime minister would be easier for him to deal with,
02:11just as he threatened once again to make us the 51st state.
02:16And you know what?
02:18From that point, it's true.
02:21I'm a strong leader.
02:23I'm a tough guy to deal with.
02:24I'm firm in my convictions and I'll always put Canada first.
02:29By contrast, in 10 years, the Liberals have blocked resource projects, hiked taxes and
02:35driven a half trillion dollars of investment to the US.
02:40Now this comes after weeks of the Liberals saying that Pierre Poliev likes Donald Trump,
02:47admires Donald Trump, echoes many of the things that Donald Trump has said.
02:51In fact, they've run ads, at least on social media, that show something that Donald Trump
02:58says and then something that sounds very similar that Pierre Poliev says.
03:02So there's that narrative out there.
03:05And as we head into a very potential election campaign where the whole issue of who can
03:12stand up to Trump best will likely be a key factor in the election, framing Pierre Poliev
03:20as like Donald Trump is obviously not a good framing for the Conservatives.
03:27So if voters take Trump at his word, this is not a symmetry that's there, that he doesn't
03:33like Pierre Poliev, and there's nothing to see here.
03:38A more cynical voter might see Trump's words more as an effort to help Pierre Poliev by
03:45distancing himself from him.
03:47So I leave it to our viewers to decide how they interpret those comments.
03:52And at the same time, Prime Minister Mark Carney is back in Ottawa.
03:56Much of his focus today relates to Canada-US relations.
04:00What's he doing?
04:01So he is chairing the Prime Minister's Council on Canada-US Relations.
04:06That is a group of business leaders, union leaders, former politicians that was convened
04:14in January by former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
04:18Now this will be Mark Carney's turn to or first turn to chair that council and discuss
04:25obviously his vision and strategy as well as what they think about that going forward
04:32in terms of those relations.
04:33He is also going to be meeting with his cabinet committee on Canada-US relations.
04:41And so we do hope to hear from some cabinet ministers going into that meeting this afternoon.
04:47And you want to bet that some of them will be asked, Andrew, about the rampant election
04:52speculation and perhaps what day we might expect that call to come.
04:57I'm not sure, though, that they will answer.
05:00Probably not.
05:01But you never know.
05:02We might get hints.
05:03This is CBC's Corinna Roman, live in Ottawa.
