00:00The Vancouver International Auto Show has removed U.S. electric car maker Tesla from its event this week.
00:07There will be no corporate Tesla presence at the show.
00:10The event's organizer says the company was given multiple opportunities to withdraw over the last seven days,
00:16then was ultimately dropped.
00:19The political position on this has absolutely no bearing on the decision.
00:22This is purely from a safety point for our guests and our attendees.
00:27Tesla's founder Elon Musk has been steeped in controversy over concerns of political interference
00:33and close ties to U.S. President Donald Trump.
00:37Trump recently selected a red Tesla as the electric car company's stock sinks and sales lag.
00:43Then a wave of Tesla takedown protests across Canada, the U.S. and parts of Europe.
00:49Tesla chargers and showrooms have also been the target of vandalism.
00:53I've been running events for 20 years. Sometimes you've got to listen to your gut.
00:57CBC News reached out to Tesla. The company did not respond by deadline.
01:02The auto show attracts over 100,000 attendees and promotes itself as one of North America's
01:08premier automotive exhibition events.
01:11A UBC expert in social movements suggests Musk's company has few options to turn it around.
01:18Those are the two scenarios, right, that sales pick up amongst Trump supporters
01:22or that he sells Tesla.
01:24But he suspects the backlash against the electric car maker is just the beginning of a larger movement
01:30against Donald Trump.
01:32Tesla is kind of the low-hanging fruit, right, so it's kind of the low-hanging fruit
01:37in a mass protest that is going to ramp up against, you know, this kind of whole administration.
01:45This latest flashpoint is also a sign of the breakdown of Canada-U.S. relations
01:50and the impact on U.S. brands.
