00:00Cracking day in Auckland as we count down to the start of race number 11 of the
00:09Championship. Neil Crompton and Mark Scaife with you for this 35 lap. Very much
00:13looking forward to it. James Courtney is the man that will start from the pole
00:17position. Let's get into the middle of this with Barrettes. I'm here with a man
00:21who is very proud of his city at the moment. The Mayor of Auckland Len Brown
00:24is with me and Len you've done it perfectly with the weather, the drivers,
00:27the track. Everything's spot-on here at Pukekohe. Look we're absolutely wrapped.
00:30It's a beautiful day here in Auckland. I had a little bit of a shaky start with a
00:34little bit of condensation but now it's absolutely superb. To all your Oz viewers
00:37we want them to come over and see the most beautiful livable city in the world.
00:41And man we do V8s. Seriously great V8s here. And put in the diary for next year
00:46because this is a truly great round. You've only got to look at the number of
00:49people who've come out here today. This is a big crowd. Yeah look we're looking at
00:52120,000, 130,000 over the entire sort of three or four days. And so that's great.
00:57Pretty much the same as last year. Every year we look to build it. But locals,
01:01New Zealanders and obviously lots and lots of guys from Oz. Now Mayor I know you love
01:06your racing so I'll let you enjoy it and I hope you get the win that you want today.
01:08All the best. It's great to see you guys. All the best to you.
01:11Down here on grid position 13 Fabian Coulthard's car. Now I want to give you a
01:14little look. You don't see this often. That's the little camera stuck right in the
01:17tarlight. And what that's going to be looking at we'll show you during the race.
01:19As this bloke will be monstering I'm sure. Craig Lowne's right behind. Let's go and
01:23have a see if we can have a quick chat with Fabian. He's just getting strapped in the
01:27car as we speak. Hey Fabs, mate you're not as happy as you should. You know you
01:31shouldn't be back here in 13 mate. You're better than that. What's been pulling you
01:34up this weekend? We've just suffered from you know being on the wrong side of the
01:39chicken flag and a little bit of timing and track position. But you know that's no
01:43excuse. You know we need to make our own gaps and things like that. But you know it's
01:47been pretty tough. We feel like we should be a lot further forward than what we are
01:50but it just makes it a little bit harder in the races. So can we assume you've
01:54tuned it up for the race mate. Some changes for this race where you expect something
01:57because you're going to have to because you know you've got Craig behind you and
01:59he's not going to be standing around for long. Yeah exactly. It just shows how tough
02:02it is. You know what I mean. Craig's no idiot. And you know for us both to be back
02:06here it just shows how competitive it is. And if you're a little bit off your game
02:09makes life a little bit difficult. All right. Good luck pal.
02:12A very casual James Courtney. James you were just grooving along to titanium tunes. They're now starting P1 today. Yesterday you said it was a pretty wild, pretty dramatic start. Today smooth sailing.
02:24It should be easier. I just have to stay ahead of my Westie mate Mark here. So for all the Kiwi hype, it's two Westies on the front row which is pretty good. So go west of Sydney.
02:34And of course Factory Holden v. Factory Ford. We always love that battle.
02:38Yeah no it's great. And also for Holden to give up their place on the car for the Anzac Appeals. Fantastic cause. So donated the
02:45poll check to those boys as well. And you can also buy our race suits after the weekend. So half goes to the
02:51NZ Diggers and half to the Aussie guys. It's awesome for you guys. Good luck for this one.
02:56Cheers. See you guys.
02:57Hey I'm a big rat for this guy Nick Perkat. He's position six. He's qualified in six. He finished the race
03:02earlier on in sixth position. I noticed this Commodore has gone a fair bit faster since
03:05they've put Falcon, Ford Falcon GT stripes on it. See if we can grab a quick word with Nick.
03:11Hey sorry to butt in there Nick. Mate I'm a big rat for your results this weekend. You've put
03:15your head down. You've made no mistakes. I see this is a bit of a start of Nick Perkat really
03:20starting to lay a foundation in this championship mate.
03:22Oh hopefully. We've got a bit of work to do to get back up the right end. But like I said
03:26to you yesterday, loving the track. The cars move around a lot. Use the term square legged.
03:30It's my new word. And I'm running with it. It's working so far. We've moved up two spots from
03:34yesterday. So just loving every minute. Hey Nick. One of the things we often say in the game is
03:38when you move forward and you become a product of your environment. You're running up here in the
03:42top six now. Can you physically feel the difference? I mean the racing's better. The guys are a little
03:46bit smarter. And I mean that with the greatest respect. But the racing is better and a little bit
03:50cleaner. Yeah exactly. Mark followed me for most of the race yesterday. And you know he'd only show
03:54the nose. He wouldn't just send it in from three cars back and bang doors at me or anything. So
03:58it's probably a little bit easier to concentrate on just driving the car because you're not worried
04:02about getting dive bombed at every single corner. So I'm quite happy up here. So I'll just try and
04:06stay here. Good luck mate. And well done putting the GT stripes on the bonnet. Good call.
04:11Chas Mostert has his best qualifying result of the year. He is in the second row. He's right behind
04:15James Courtney. Chas, Courtney, what's the strategy? Get around him in the first lap?
04:20Yeah we'll give it a go. We've got two blue cars up the front here. So hopefully we can get a
04:24one-two. That's the plan. This is a great result for you. A real, I guess, finding your feet here
04:29this first year with this team. But to get up in the second row is awesome at this stage of the year.
04:34Yeah for sure. We've come off the, I guess, the start of the year pretty slow with the FPR guys.
04:38We've been struggling a bit. Frosty's been able to, I guess, get the most out of it. And I've been
04:42struggling a little bit. So it's a good reward for us, my car six crew, to get up on the second row
04:47of the grid here. So hopefully we're in a good podium position here. And hopefully we can bring some
04:51champagne back for them. Chas, just talk us through your start strategy here. I mean,
04:55across the road you've got Jamie Wincup, you've got Frosty up the front and James Courtney ahead
05:00of you. How do you attack this? It's all after the start really. You've got to pretty much try
05:05and get a good start and then see where you're at from there. So I'm pretty lucky I've got the
05:09inside line here. So hopefully Jamie won't have a good start as what I do. And hopefully we get
05:13in front of him by the time we get down to turn four. All right, go get him Chas. Well done.
05:17Thank you. Jamie Wincup, it started so well for you yesterday, but all went
05:21pear-shaped. But guess what? You and your mate Frosty are back together again at Puca
05:25Coie. Yeah, we can't take a trick at the moment. We had red flag in Quali and yeah, of course,
05:31the power steering yesterday. So fingers crossed we're going to have a clean run, just try to
05:34score some points. Points is what's important at the moment. These races are only worth 50,
05:38but every single point counts for the championship. Yeah, we always get to the end of the year and
05:42it always comes down to one or two. So everyone's important. But you're right. Yeah, I've got
05:46James is very quick. Both FPR cars are very quick towards the end of the race. So I've got
05:52to try to line up a few at the start here. Good luck. We look forward to it. Yeah, thank
05:55you. Scotty McLaughlin, you have got to be feeling very comfortable about racing at this
05:59circuit. Yeah, I do. It's home. I used to live, you know, 40 minutes away. So yeah, it's pretty
06:06cool. And you know, the home fans really make you feel really welcome. So it's awesome.
06:09Hey, none more so than mum and dad in the stand. Where are they? Can you just point them
06:12out? Can you see them from here? Yeah, yeah. They always give me a wave, but I can't see. They're
06:15too high. It goes past my roof. So always give mum a wave, but I'm sure she's sinking
06:20a few wines at the moment responsibly. Of course. Hey, have a great one, Scotty. Well
06:24done today. Thank you. Cheers. Viewer votes still ticking around 75% or thereabouts. I
06:35hesitated for a moment while I went, what's the number going to settle at? The bottom line
06:38is the boy's popular. He is, but he's come back two spots. So the market's already moved on
06:42and it was almost 80% before. Incidentally, those of you that are regular viewers, you
06:47may have noticed our colleague Matt White isn't with us in the booth this weekend. He's
06:51moved on to a new opportunity in his career. We'd all like to take this opportunity to wish
06:55him well for his future. Good on you, Matty. So James Courtney, we're about 90 seconds away.
07:01He's the man that will start from the pole position. Didn't get to cover it off earlier in the day,
07:06Scafie, but because of the way the format rolled out yesterday, it was very, very busy. One practice
07:10session, one qualifying, one race. A bunch of things going on last night. A lot of people
07:14working behind the scenes late into the evening. Engine change, car 55, the green bottle of Ford
07:19Falcon. Engine change for Michael Caruso, car 36. Weren't happy with the performance of that.
07:23Gearbox change for Tim Slade, car 47. This man had a power steering pump problem yesterday
07:31and they had a big drama down the bottom end of the circuit and that cost him dearly. He got a
07:37ripping start, but Jason Bright got the job done in the final analysis to add to that winners list.
07:42Onboard camera showing you that we've got it covered from every angle today. Rick Kelly was one of those
07:47that made a mistake between turns three and four. The point being huge amount of work last night to
07:53rectify performance, to try and find gains because this is such a wild ride. Here's the championship
07:58scenario at the moment. Lowndes extending that lead yesterday in the first of the sprint races,
08:02now out to 49. James Courtney hovering there in fourth. At the bottom end of the top 10 table,
08:08Jason Bright jumped in by virtue of that win. 50 points on offer for a race win. Importantly,
08:15remember, if you were watching yesterday, they got Wind Cup out and he sort of trickled around,
08:19still with the power steering drama with that car. 24th place may not seem like much,
08:24but 10 points was the offer and that's important. It certainly is and they're already talking about
08:28the championship battle, Neil. So only four rounds in and we're in Auckland, New Zealand.
08:34Mokoe Park Raceway, a great racetrack, a lot of history. 2.91 kilometres, 11 turns. Very,
08:41very fast. 35 laps for race 11, another 35 laps for race 12. We might talk sectors and immobile,
08:48let's talk about how this works. Let's take a look at our Fuso starting grid and for the factory
08:55teams, a great effort for James Courtney and Mark Winterbottom to be on the front row.
08:59Chas Mostyn and Jamie Winkup, got a little hand there because McLaughlin penalised two spots back
09:05to five. The battle there with Perkat will be interesting. Nick Perkat's done a great job.
09:10Shane Van Gisbergen and yesterday's winner, Jason Bright. Todd Kelly, great job. He's the fastest of the
09:17distance at this point. Tim Slade alongside him in position 10. Garth Tander, position 11.
09:23Dave Reynolds in 12. Engine change for him, as Neil said. Fabian, not good enough at qualifying.
09:2913th, Scott Pye for DJR in 14. Craig Lowndes, series leader in 15th position at this point.
09:37Very disappointing also for Lee Holdsworth and Will Davison, a long way down. Engine change there
09:42for Caruso. Rick Kelly, very unlucky at qualifying. Red flag got him. He would have been
09:47right at the front. Jack Perkins at Dale Wood, 21 and 22. Russell Engel and Robert Dahlgren
09:54are the rear of the grid. Dahlgren, car fixed from qualifying on the grid now.
09:59But not fixed. The car of David Wall damaged yesterday. This is his teammate, Scottie Pye,
10:05Wilson Security Racing, Dick Johnson Racing. And the sister car to this was badly damaged in contact.
10:11Turns 10 and 11 with Chas Mostyn. This is David Reynolds, Spotlight Ford. We're on board with Davey.
10:16And he was complaining about the engine performance. That's why in that very compact day yesterday,
10:21he didn't get a chance to change it. And they changed that overnight. So he should be going
10:25better as a consequence of that. We've got 10 in-car cameras covering the field for you.
10:29Will Davison.
10:31You know how we see that pause in qualifying where all of a sudden everybody comes in and
10:35jams up pit lane and the track is all but empty for a couple of minutes. Twice today,
10:40I noticed, for qualifying 11 and 12, Todd Kelly went out on an empty track. And you look
10:46at where he's qualified. He's done very well. He's ended up in ninth position for this one.
10:50So that's good news. And I think well played given the congestion at a place like this.
10:54No doubt. That was Scott McLaughlin's heart rate. There's Fabians. It's pretty low there at the moment.
10:58129. Many of these guys fit, but this will be stressful.
11:03Yeah, and it will be down here on the start line. Now, whilst James Courtney's on pole,
11:07the place to be really is over where Mark Winterbottom is. I was looking at the tarmac
11:11here before. Look, there's actually a different tarmac on the inside than the outside. And what
11:15you've got to do, because turn one goes this way, you actually want to be on the left-hand
11:18side for turn two. This will be an advantage to Mark Winterbottom. I'll be surprised if he
11:23doesn't win the start. Thanks, Larko. Career pole number six, James Courtney. He's got control
11:28on the inside. Yesterday, that proved to be not the quick way off this grid.
11:31Greg flag, Greg flag. Field cleared. That's the view.
11:3824 cars. Lights up.
11:43And into it. Very even start. Somebody stormed near the back. It's one of the Erebus cars.
11:49Stationery on the grid, but now away. Great job, Courtney, to get around.
11:53There, but I think Winterbottom was able to take it off him.
11:58Oh, contact there with Brighton Van Giesburg. And crisscross now.
12:04It's a nice job. And using the clean side of the road to advantage Mark Winterbottom.
12:09That's Scott Pye on the left. We're riding with Fabian Coulthard. He's going to have the
12:13inside run. They're all on cold tyres to turn number five. This has been an area of the track
12:18that's caused a few dramas this weekend with that new surface upsetting the car's bump
12:24control on the braking area run into there.
12:27Leown's in a very precarious position around the outside of Todd Kelly.
12:31Don't want to be on the outside there. So he's back on the inside now for the head.
12:34This would be better.
12:36Just need to make sure that he don't get caught now at the fast left.
12:41Todd Kelly has not fared well at all in this opening lap.
12:44He's having a battle here with Scott Pye.
12:45This happened yesterday and it got spooky.
12:47A little bit more room given today. That's worked.
12:51And Todd Kelly holds position.
12:54Oh, off the road. In the grass. Craig Lowndes.
12:58We've seen it several times this weekend. And he survives.
13:01Back to 16th position for Lowndes.
13:04So he made some spots and he's fallen back out since then.
13:071.3 in the second is the gap. Winterbottom to Courtney.
13:09Then it's Wincup. Then Mostert.
13:11Then Percats moved up one from his qualifying position.
13:141.1. McLaughlin's dropped the spot.
13:16Bright, Dan Gisberg and David Renner to Tim Slade.
13:19That's your 10.
13:20Will Davison was the guy that missed the kick then with the start problem, Neil.
13:25And unstable under breaks there for Jamie Wincup into turn 5.
13:29McLaughlin had a look as well.
13:31There wasn't space.
13:33Now between the Western Sydney boys, there was a bit of aggro at turn 1
13:36with Winterbottom around the outside of Courtney.
13:39And I like it when Mark Winterbottom is forceful.
13:41That was a forceful move.
13:42He shoved the falcon across the front of the H.O.T. Commodore.
13:52And he battled on yesterday.
13:55And I think did a pretty mighty job.
13:56Oh, gone.
13:58So a spot gone for Wincup.
14:00He was right out where Lowndes was on the previous lap.
14:03Mostert gets by.
14:04Successive laps where those Red Bull Holden Commodores
14:07have ended up in the green stuff.
14:08Cannot do that.
14:09So now Percat is right under the rear wing of Wincup.
14:17It's going to make the point, scapey, that Winterbottom yesterday finishing 13th.
14:21And they had real steering damage with that car because of the time proximity between events
14:27yesterday.
14:27So it's a mighty job to just soldier on and try and get some valuable points.
14:33Wincup under pressure.
14:35They're not quite there with set-up, are they, this weekend?
14:37Red Bull Racing Australia.
14:40The real winners that loses, Dave Reynolds, gain three positions early.
14:43That's Van Giesbergen gets down the inside of yesterday's winner.
14:46Still a bit of contact.
14:47And Van Giesbergen ran Jace down the road there.
14:51That might have been the steering.
14:53May have been the steering on Bright's car then.
14:56Bright lose another spot.
14:58And Dave Reynolds comes up.
14:59So Dave Reynolds now up four spots.
15:01Todd Kelly down four spots.
15:06So Jason Bright not happy about that.
15:08A bit of a chance that the steering's been tweaked.
15:13And Andrew Edwards just confirming, please make sure that you're safe.
15:18On board now with Tim Slade.
15:20Right behind yesterday's winner.
15:22And as we saw with that contact with Van Giesbergen, he didn't just lose the spot to Shane.
15:26He lost another spot to Dave Reynolds.
15:29Van Giesbergen showing good pace.
15:32To Winterbottom, Courtney Mostert, Wincup, Percat, McLaughlin, Van Giesbergen, Reynolds, Bright.
15:37And on board with Slade.
15:39That is ten positions.
15:44And fastest first sector split on this lap for Van Giesbergen.
15:49And the fastest lap of the race is Winterbottom at the moment.
15:55So Bright here just trying to gather up and find his rhythm again.
15:58Now he's side by side with Slade at ten.
16:01You hold your breath.
16:02Oh, you hold your breath every time that happens.
16:04That is as wild as you would ever see.
16:07That's 200 kilometres an hour.
16:09Bump in between the change of direction.
16:12Garth Tander now trying to get a run down the inside.
16:15I thought Bright was gone then.
16:17I reckon he probably did too.
16:18That's a little bit naughty.
16:19There's a consequence there.
16:21If everybody gets it wrong, you don't want to think about it.
16:24So Tim Slade just giving Jason Bright a little touch up through that final corner when the rear of the car, Bright's car, that it is so light and sliding.
16:33And he's trying to gather it back up.
16:35They got round the left really nicely.
16:38We saw the big accident yesterday with David Wall and Chas Mostert.
16:41But he did a good job there.
16:42And now Slade down the inside.
16:44He's going to push him wide.
16:45Bright holds his ground.
16:48Slade goes a long way.
16:49Bright pushes him into the grass.
16:50Slade bounces back and punches the left-hand front wheel right off the front.
16:55Super cheap auto.
16:59Commodore now damaged.
17:01Significant damage.
17:02It'll be one of the front A-arms.
17:04Will's hanging off there.
17:05Come into the pits.
17:05Take it easy.
17:06You can't play dodging cars like that.
17:08This is Andrew Edwards, engineer, 14 BOC, Jason Bright.
17:13That was serve and return of serve on repeat cycle over more than a lap.
17:18And that's been costly.
17:23Winterbottom, three quarters of a second margin.
17:25Fastest lap of the race still.
17:27Car number five in command.
17:28He's got it out now to .8 or a little over.
17:32Bright, meantime, has dropped all the way down to 12.
17:34Here he is again in replay.
17:36So it went on and on at turn six.
17:37A little bit of contact.
17:38And Bright is making sure that Slade's got nowhere to go.
17:42And that's in response to what he would not have liked at the final corner.
17:46He would not have been comfortable or happy with that at all.
17:48He would not.
17:49There's a response from a super cheap auto garage.
17:51I'm sure there was a similar one.
17:53About three quarters of a lap before that when they were coming onto the straight and Slade was into the back of Jason Bright.
18:00So as Neil said, a little bit of tit for tat there.
18:03But you can't afford to keep on bumping each other.
18:04Because as soon as you have the wheel to wheel contact, then the result is it will pluck a wheel off.
18:10As you can see there, the left front of the super cheap auto Commodore.
18:15And as I said, significant damage.
18:17You can see the wheel just fall out.
18:18It's broken at the top arm of the double A arm front suspension there.
18:23It's not going anywhere now for this race.
18:25They'll have to work pretty hard to get it done for the next.
18:32Tanner's done a pretty good job there.
18:34Klumpo stayed at the trouble.
18:36Fabian Coulthard running behind him.
18:37We're going to take a look at a little bit of a rundown of how this has gone down because it was a great even start.
18:46The two factory cars, Courtney and Winterbottom, off the line.
18:50It was fantastic.
18:51This is on board now with Fabian.
18:53So a little bit of a balk there.
18:54That's Todd Kelly.
18:55That's Garth Tander.
18:57So Tander made some ground down the inside.
18:59A little bit of rubbing.
19:00Around the outside was Pi.
19:02And then this was the moment where Lowndes got very wide.
19:06He gave a spot away.
19:08So he went from 15 to 16.
19:11And then straight after that, Winkup on the following lap.
19:15He goes from third to fourth.
19:16Just gets back on again.
19:18Has a big tank slapper.
19:19And just regains control before he can get back on the road behind Mostert.
19:24So there was a bit of lively action going on there.
19:27Especially for the Red Bull guys.
19:28Those heart rate monitors would have been interesting in those instances when they were on the grass down there.
19:34So the boys are on lap number eight.
19:35Race control will investigate the incident between cars eight and 47.
19:40Mark Winterbottom has got control.
19:41If I just do a tad over one second.
19:48On lap number 10 of 35.
19:51Race 11, the V8 Supercars Championship.
19:53Pukukui Raceway outside Auckland.
19:55Hope you're enjoying all the action on seven.
19:57It's Witterbottom, Courtney and Mostert.
19:59Nice run for him so far.
20:01Then Winkup, Percat, McLaughlin, Van Gisbergen.
20:03In the break, Jason Bright has been given a pit lane drive-through penalty for his role in the incident at turn six with Tim Slade.
20:11Mark, your thoughts?
20:12I think it's unfair, Neil.
20:13I think the contact that Slade made with Bright coming onto the straight has huge repercussions on the previous lap.
20:20And then there was some tit-for-tat bumping.
20:22I would have looked at it after the race and made a call afterwards.
20:25But it's put Jason Bright out, which in terms of the Jason Richards trophy, winning yesterday on Anzac Day and having a run for the rest of the weekend has a huge implication in terms of his eventual result.
20:37So, for me, I would have looked at that one afterwards.
20:40These guys trying to fight their way into a battle.
20:43The top ten.
20:44It's Scotty Pye and Todd Kelly.
20:45They're currently 11th and 12th.
20:48We're looking at Kelly from the rear bumper of the DJR car.
20:51And we've got a huge problem here with Robert Dahlgren's car.
20:56He's just limping it down and he's going to pull it to the right here to the pit lane.
21:00You can see the cockpit is just absolutely choked with smoke.
21:05So, it's a sad end there for Robert, who had a problem earlier.
21:09And I'll bet that whatever's gone on here is related to having gone off and some damage.
21:13They've had to very quickly turn that car around.
21:17He's still tethered up with his radio, but he's got that out of the B pillar.
21:22So, often in a rushed turnaround situation, there can be a problem with an oil line.
21:26We don't know.
21:27We'll find out a little bit later on.
21:28But it's been a tough weekend for him.
21:29And he was on a very good qualifying lap when he made that mistake earlier.
21:34Back to the pits he goes.
21:36There it is there where it's hemorrhaged badly turn 10.
21:42Interesting to see if there's oil under that car or not.
21:46A little rotation here.
21:47Will Davison, car number nine.
21:49I was about to make a point about him because that Erebus car that I noted when we looked at the replays at the start,
21:53I'm pretty sure it was Will that was actually stationary at the start.
21:57Safety car, stand by.
21:59When you exit that lane, you need to be cautious because the other car passed in the complete exit.
22:05Voice of Tim Schenck and Barrettes.
22:07Well, just in the garage with Tim Slade, who is now back out of the car team.
22:11There was some pretty spirited rivalry with Jason Bright.
22:14Tell us about that, what was going on.
22:15Yeah, I guess there's no previous rivalry, but he wasn't too keen on giving me any racing room.
22:24It started sort of passing me the hairpin, went side by side, and then he just sort of ran me really wide the second last corner.
22:31So, yeah, fair enough.
22:32And then it happened again, obviously, when I tried to pass him at turn five, and then, yeah, ran the outside of six and ran me clean off the road.
22:39And as he sort of hit me once, hit me again, and sort of he was driving past and made contact with my left front, and it's just, yeah, busted the suspension.
22:48So, yeah, obviously it's disappointing to get a DNF, especially when you're qualifying the top ten.
22:53But, yeah, we'll fight on and go again in the next race to Sabo.
22:58Okay, Bridie's had the pit lane penalty.
23:00Is that the right result?
23:01Yeah, well, I guess so.
23:02I thought it was pretty unfair, the move, you know, that he tried to do.
23:07You know, you have to give guys racing room, and it's always, you know, said to us in the driver's briefing that, you know, you can't just run a guy off the road.
23:16So, yeah, I guess, you know, justice has been served, but it doesn't help our cause back here in the pits.
23:21All right, better luck tomorrow, Tim.
23:21Thanks, mate.
23:22Thanks, mate.
23:23Tim Slade, super cheap auto racing as Russell Ingle comes into the lane here as well.
23:28Not quite sure what the issue is.
23:30Rusty's down in 21st.
23:31We'll take a quick break while the Pedder's safety car's out.
23:34Come back and join us in a moment.
23:40That's the scene here in Auckland.
23:42ITM 500.
23:43Megawall shows you the car's still under the control of the Pedder's safety car.
23:47Race control down bottom left there.
23:48The race director is Tim Schenken in the centre of screen.
23:50And to his left is the driving standards observer, Jason Barguana, who is racing in the New Zealand V8s here this weekend, incidentally, as well.
23:57And the reason for this, Robert Dahlgren's Volvo stationary at pit lane exit after.
24:03So that car peeled off at turn 10 with a huge amount of smoke coming out of a Dahlgren's Volvo, and then he was parked in a bad spot.
24:17Here's Jason Bright, who's made a subsequent stop, by the way, and our viewer vote question, was the drive-through penalty for Bright a fair decision?
24:24So you can see it's reasonably evenly split there at the moment.
24:26Jump onto the app or onto the website, the V8 website, and you can jump into the conversation and have your say.
24:31We're racing once more, and the control was held by Mark Winterbottom.
24:38No passing before they cross the start-finish control line.
24:43Van Gisbergen was looking threatening for position number six as they made their way down to turn one.
24:48It was a very good restart for Van Gisbergen.
24:50He was right up behind Scott McRoy.
24:51That's the turn four exit curve.
24:59It's a very big, aggressive curve.
25:01Remember, last year, Mark Winterbottom ran up on there and had a left-hand rear tyre puncher.
25:07That's Van Gisbergen.
25:09Down the inside with Dave Reynolds.
25:11They're alongside each other.
25:12Dave again holds ground.
25:14This is where the two Slade and Bright cars made contact a little while ago.
25:19And that was looking from the rear bumper of Scott McLaughlin.
25:22That was a cool shot at turn six.
25:25Those fellas gave each other racing room, which was cool.
25:28It's Winterbottom.
25:29Half a second over Courtney.
25:37They wind themselves into a frenzy there at turn ten.
25:40The mid-corner speed is phenomenal.
25:42It's about 210 kilometres an hour.
25:44That's why we made reference to the contact with Slade and Bright before at that spot.
25:51Because it's just so fast, Convo, that any little contact there normally has massive consequences.
25:58As we go back from Mark Winterbottom's car.
26:03Sorry, we're not going to talk to Dave Reynolds.
26:06Looking back at Tanda.
26:07And that'll be the issue for Jason Bright in this debate, which no doubt he'll have a point of view at the end of the race.
26:13I've got no doubt that Jason was returning serve at turn six and he probably didn't give sufficient racing room to Tim.
26:19However, his heart rate would have been off the score.
26:22He just basically would have blown a fuse about being tickled up so much at the final corner.
26:26McLaughlin down the inside of Perka.
26:29A little bump again at the exit.
26:32Nick won't be very happy about that.
26:33Drops a spot.
26:36Van Gisbergen's going to have a run here now at Perka as a result of that.
26:39Because it's taken Nick out of rhythm slightly.
26:42So Shane's concentrating on his exit here.
26:44He uses all the road.
26:45He's very strong in this part of the racetrack.
26:48He's got that car working well in the medium-high speed corners.
26:52VIP Petfoods Commodores, the car we're talking about.
26:56I reckon Scotty would be pretty incentivised to get away from Nick at the moment.
26:59I don't need to get away from this bloke because he's got a return serve on me here.
27:03So a little bit of a moment there for Nick Perkat out in the grass.
27:09Got himself organised.
27:10We're out the front now of Dave Reynolds' car.
27:13We're out of the rear of it before.
27:18Shane having a look.
27:21Perkat half-sided him and left three-quarters of a gap.
27:24And he's under assault at the moment.
27:28And Van Gisbergen looking for the criss-crosser.
27:30Now he makes it stick.
27:32He's up there.
27:33And Perkat could lose a couple of spots in this manoeuvre.
27:38Reynolds wants in as well.
27:41Oh, he can't get it done there.
27:42He's got to come out of the throttle.
27:44He doesn't want to be on the outside on those bumps.
27:47It's a going-nowhere position.
27:48Right here, they grab sixth gear.
27:56Cars bounce all over the place.
27:59255 kilometres an hour on the run into one.
28:02We're just going to quickly interrupt Brad Jones.
28:04He can barely take his eyes off the screen.
28:05There's so much going on.
28:07A couple of laps before, we saw the incident with Tim Slade and Jason Bryant.
28:10You boys shook your head.
28:12He got the penalty.
28:13You didn't believe it was fair.
28:14Well, no, it's not so much that it wasn't fair.
28:16I mean, he got shoved off the road by Shane earlier.
28:18So all I really want is some consistency.
28:20I've got no problem with, you know, I know what the rules are, just like anyone.
28:23But I'm obviously going to protect my guy and defend him.
28:27So, you know, it needs to be the same for everyone.
28:30It's disappointing when you want to defend the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
28:34You want to take that back home to Albury.
28:35And these situations make it tough.
28:38Well, these situations probably mean that that's not going to happen.
28:41And that's probably what the head shake's more about than I think the decision is wrong.
28:45I think, you know, we won yesterday and now we're last.
28:48So chances of us retaining it aren't great.
28:51But anyway, you know, we've still got two races to go.
28:53Plenty can happen as we've seen what's going out there today.
28:56So, you know, we just keep on going and do the best we can and see where we end up.
28:59You saw the viewer vote.
29:0060% of the viewers at home believe that it's an unfair penalty.
29:04It's hard to say.
29:06Well, I mean, I think people like to see hard racing.
29:08But by the same token, you know, you've got, you know, look, all I want to see is some consistency.
29:12So, you know, it's great that that many people think that.
29:15But at the end of the day, it needs to be the same for everyone.
29:18Thanks, Brad.
29:18No worries.
29:19So if you reverse engineer Brad's answer there, what he's saying is that he wasn't endorsing the Jason Bright move on Tim Slade.
29:26He was saying what his driver was saying earlier.
29:28And Brightie was suggesting that he got a fair shove from Van Wiesbergen.
29:31And he was not happy at all about what happened in the final corner.
29:33But that's history now.
29:35Bright is fighting back.
29:36He's currently 19th.
29:40So this is it.
29:44This is the moment that Neil's talking about, Brad's talking about.
29:47This is one of the wildest sections of road anywhere that we travel to.
29:51A little bump, a little bump, a little bump at the final corner.
29:55And Bright was right out sideways.
29:56Check the steering out.
29:59Slade stays there.
30:00Turns into the final corner.
30:01Bang in the back wheel.
30:03Sideways.
30:03At over 200 kilometres an hour, that usually ends up with wrecked cars.
30:09So although, as you correctly point out, Neil, Brad wasn't endorsing the problem at Turn 6 that they had.
30:17He was basically saying it was a return of serve.
30:20So Bright's been back into the pit lane, grabbed another set of tyres.
30:23Oh, there's more chaos down here.
30:24This time it's Jack Perkins.
30:26The run between 3 and 4.
30:27Gelbin entry pointing the wrong way.
30:29And it looked as though someone else was tangled up in that as well.
30:34So did Jack do this as a solo performance?
30:37Or was it some form of duet down there?
30:39I think it was a handful, but they come out of one rather than that.
30:44Whoa!
30:44That is...
30:45No, it's a solo.
30:46That is absolutely out of control.
30:49He's backed over that big, tall kerb.
30:50Right out sideways for Jack Perkins.
30:54You don't often see a spin at the back end of that corner.
30:58It's very fast.
30:59He's got a mid-corner speed of 195 kilometres an hour.
31:03And he had full opposite block on the car and then knew that he was going to spin.
31:07So he grabbed the brake pedal and tried to have a slow accident.
31:11This is Fabian Pultard.
31:12Left rear suspension is on the right of your screen.
31:15Here's the Lockwood entry.
31:16Tenth position at the moment.
31:18He's not totally happy.
31:19We spoke to him at the start of the race and he says we've got no excuses.
31:22We're just not quite there at the moment.
31:26He's coming off turn four.
31:28You can see the stress go through the suspension and that left rear tyre.
31:31Independent rear suspension in these new generation cars.
31:34It's second gear, minimum speed value in the middle of the corner is 95 kilometres an hour.
31:39It's quite quick.
31:40It's a funny corner.
31:41You've got to get it right.
31:42You've got to be very patient.
31:43Getting good drive off there dictates your pace.
31:46And Perkatt's gone straight ahead at five.
31:49So he's thrown away a bunch of spots.
31:51He's come back in.
31:53Is he behind Van Hidburgh?
31:57Yes, there he is.
32:01So I ask myself questions and then I answer them.
32:03Which is a sign of something.
32:04I'm not sure what it is.
32:09It'll get better.
32:11You can take something for it, I think.
32:14We're to bottom.
32:15He's got 1.2 seconds margin over Courtney.
32:18Then Mostert, Wincup, McLaughlin, Van Gisberg and Perkatt.
32:22Then Reynolds, Tander and Coulthard.
32:24That's your ten barrettes.
32:25Neil, just in Pepsi Max with Tim Edwards.
32:27And Tim, the last thing I want to do is put the Moz on you.
32:29But, gee, looking good there with Frosty up front and Chas Mostert in third.
32:34Yeah, but don't put the Moz on you.
32:36Okay, good.
32:37I won't.
32:3814 laps to go, mate.
32:39So we're not there yet.
32:40Good spot to be, though.
32:41Rather be there than down the other end.
32:42Yeah, absolutely.
32:43Look, I mean, we knew we had good pace coming here this weekend.
32:45And obviously we didn't get to show it yesterday for a variety of reasons.
32:48So, yeah, it's encouraging at the moment.
32:50But 14 laps is a long way.
32:52Oh, go.
32:52Wait a minute.
32:53About 18 minutes of my life, it's going to feel like 24 hours.
32:58Dave Reynolds going well as well.
32:59That's good news.
33:00Yeah, absolutely.
33:01No, he's doing a good job.
33:02He's having a little battle with Perkatt at the moment.
33:04So hopefully we can get past him and move forward.
33:06He's faster than Perkatt, that's for sure.
33:07Yeah, I did see you just grimace a little bit at Jack Perkins.
33:10Oh, well, I'm not quite sure what happened there.
33:12We only saw the aftermath of it.
33:13So I'm not quite sure what's happened there.
33:15But, yeah, fortunately he didn't touch any walls
33:17because obviously it's a tight turnaround between these two races.
33:20Take a deep breath.
33:21I'll leave you alone.
33:22Thanks, mate.
33:23Tim Edwards there, team principal.
33:25Pepsi Max, fourth performance racing.
33:27There's David Reynolds with the tail wagging on the exit of Turn 1.
33:29That was where Jack Perkins went off the road.
33:32I think the explanation for Jack is he's only got to be a little bit wide,
33:35get bumped on those undulations down there,
33:38and you're in the weeds and in strife.
33:39We're riding with the leader.
33:41He's got 1.6 seconds in hand over James Courtney.
33:44Remember, he had a win at Winton last time out.
33:47He's second in the championship.
33:49He's doing a nice job, Mark Winterbottom here,
33:51of controlling the race, looking after the tyres.
33:53He's got good speed, consistency.
33:55Here we are.
33:56Turn 8, hairpin, first gear, 65 clicks.
34:00Quick freedom.
34:00We'll come back to Auckland in just a moment.
34:02What a crowd.
34:11What a day.
34:12It's a beautiful day in Auckland,
34:14and it's a 2.4 second margin,
34:16which makes it a lovely scenario for Ford fans at the moment as well.
34:19In favour of Mark Winterbottom over James Courtney,
34:22who was the pole sitter.
34:23James hasn't got a response right at the moment.
34:25How's the oil pressure for this man?
34:28Scotty McLaughlin.
34:29It's up there.
34:30He's catching wind cup, so he's taking ground off him.
34:32He's battling for fourth position.
34:34Remember, he had the two-spot penalty before the start of this race.
34:38Qualified third, went back to five.
34:40He's currently in fifth.
34:42Have a look at this for a slide.
34:44This is Jack Perkins.
34:46Has a tyre failure.
34:47So it's right outside.
34:49It's all the chunks of tyre coming out of that there.
34:52Can't really see it properly now
34:53because it's pulling fibreglass and composite material
34:57from the back of his Falcon.
34:59But as it gets right out sideways,
35:01then he gets out to the marbles.
35:03So all that debris on the edge of the road is super slippery.
35:06And this is wind cup.
35:09And down the inside goes Van Gisbergen and gets it done.
35:13That's weird.
35:13He lost a lot of ground.
35:15McLaughlin there.
35:15And I think that Perkins incident
35:17is subsequent to what happened earlier to him.
35:20So that's a mark two drama for him down there.
35:23So nice work here, Shane Van Gisbergen.
35:25I'm surprised because it looked like the opposite was going to happen.
35:28It looked like McLaughlin was the one
35:30that was going to hustle wind cup out of position
35:32and suddenly he's lost a little bit of momentum.
35:35That's very strange.
35:36He was making ground on wind cup.
35:39He was looking like he had better car speed,
35:41much better exits.
35:43Wasn't quite at the point where he was going to be able
35:45to overtake Jamie.
35:47And then for Van Gisbergen to put a move on him at the hairpin was very strange.
35:52So Van Gisbergen up to fifth down.
35:54Incidentally, Jason Bright, who did that pit lane drive-through penalty
35:58for his involvement in the incident with Tim Slade,
36:01came back in, grabbed some tyres.
36:02There's the point scenario as they sit at the moment, by the way.
36:05Here comes Bright.
36:05He's making moves here.
36:06He's got fresh tyres and a quick car.
36:08He's making it work.
36:09He's got some bump and grind going here with Todd Kelly.
36:12I'd suggest that Jason's in a frame of mind at the moment that's pretty determined.
36:17So look at that.
36:17It's just a 19-point margin.
36:19This is obviously changing all the time.
36:20But Bright's flying.
36:21He's up now to 12th position after basically being at the back of the field.
36:26Well, he was absolutely last because at the restart, he wasn't even back to the field.
36:33So very, very good performance.
36:35Great speed.
36:36Fresh tyres on that car, as Neil said.
36:38So after the pit stop now, Bright up to 12th.
36:41On board now with Rick Kelly, who's battling with his teammate James Moffat.
36:46They're in 16th and 17th.
36:49Here's the gear change.
36:50You see the lights there.
36:52You can see there's the gear number, number five.
36:54That'll flick to six.
36:57At the top of the screen is his number.
36:59There's a datum lap.
37:02You'll also see a lap number of the race, which is 29.
37:07And then you'll see the front bar and rear bar numbers on the bottom of screen.
37:11But he keeps inconveniently moving at Troy's stage.
37:13It's a bit of a chase, isn't it?
37:15Is it handy if it was drag racing for you right now?
37:19At least it stays in the one spot.
37:21Thanks for that.
37:23This is the bit of the racetrack that we all love.
37:26This run through turn 10 and 11.
37:28Big bump.
37:30Actually, quite a bit of G-force generated here because you can see that Rick leans into the corner.
37:34Now he looks down, watches those shift lights.
37:37Then starts to make a determination about how hard he wants to push into turn wide.
37:42Oh, his teammate was wide down there.
37:44Caruso, it is just in front of him.
37:48You do it.
37:49You call this slap down.
37:51Oh, I just, I'm intrigued.
37:52I love watching it.
37:53Ninety-five-odd kilometres an hour.
37:55Second gear, the run down the back straight.
37:57Now it's about clean shifts, not touching or popping that riff limiter.
38:00And, oh, then Gisbergen's gone straight ahead at five.
38:03This is a popular disease this weekend.
38:08Jeff Slater, his engineer.
38:13So he was making big ground here on Jamie Wincup, and he couldn't get it stopped.
38:17He hasn't marked those tyres, though.
38:19He didn't lock up.
38:20Just released the brake pedal and gone straight ahead.
38:29Winterbottom's got 2.4 seconds over James Courtney now.
38:32So he's getting into cruise mode.
38:36So we're looking rearward from Rick Kelly's car.
38:39We were on board with him there before in the cockpit.
38:43I was just making the point that those clean gear shifts are very important here on that back straight.
38:48Try and anticipate them to the extent that you don't touch the rev limit or even just sneak a shift ever so slightly
38:54and hurt the efficiency of the change by 50 to 100 revs, and it does impact the terminal speed.
39:01Keep chipping away here, mate.
39:02Five to go.
39:03Five to go.
39:04So Will Davison on the back of Rick Kelly.
39:08Just in front is Moffat.
39:10Lowndes, 15.
39:11The field's mixed up, isn't it?
39:15And which just goes to show how hard it is to set the cars up for this racetrack.
39:19Oh, Lowndes is being attacked.
39:22Might lose a spot here to James Moffat.
39:24Could lose a spot to Rick Kelly if Rick dives down there, too.
39:27This is having an impact on that points tally that you saw before as well.
39:33So good pass there, James Moffat.
39:37Craig Lowndes started in 15th.
39:39He got slightly up to 14th and back now to 16th.
39:44So he's amazing for the series leader and for someone who's always been fast here to be buried in the field there like that.
39:53And Lowndes said to me yesterday, I was reasonably happy with the pace of the car, but he said,
39:57I really struggled with rear brake balance, particularly on that joint at the end of the back straight.
40:01It just wasn't settled there.
40:03But look at the back of the car.
40:04Focus on the imagery there at the moment and you'll see it sliding.
40:07He's not making his apexes.
40:08In fact, he's just letting the car slide around.
40:11So whatever they did to it, it hasn't tuned it up or the track is evolving and they haven't chased its evolution.
40:19Now just watch the body language.
40:20Neil's referring to using more road, way more road than Moffat and for Rick Kelly.
40:25Can't make it, make the apex.
40:28He actually missed the apex onto the back straight.
40:30Just watch it through the fast stuff.
40:33That was rear locking.
40:34Battling to get it stopped.
40:35That's what he was uncomfortable with last night and he and Jeremy Moore were working on trying to get that stability returned to the rear of the car.
40:45Here's the two quick corners in the final one.
40:47Little dab of brake before they come over the top at the right.
40:50That's top Kelly.
40:50There's Lee Holdsworth.
40:5313th and 14th.
40:54Check this out down at turn one.
40:55Sliding on the exit.
41:02Slide, slide.
41:03Then he's got to get the weight to all shuffle across from the other direction.
41:06And he's having to slow it down a lot here.
41:08Carrying a lot of brake on the run to four.
41:09It was more accurate for him that time.
41:11That was a better look than the previous lap.
41:14Possibly.
41:15Oh, and Van Gisbergen straight ahead again at five.
41:17That's the second occasion.
41:20Again, you can argue whether this is right.
41:22You can basically go back to your spot.
41:24There's been a lot of controversy about this.
41:27You go off the road.
41:28What is the real penalty?
41:30So Wincup just in front of him.
41:32McLaughlin just behind.
41:34So Winterbottom leading by 2.9 seconds.
41:36He's done a great job.
41:37He's been very, very fast in the races all year.
41:40Courtney has held position from losing that start with Winterbottom at turn one.
41:46Pretty robust exchange with those two guys.
41:48Most had a great bounce back from nowhere yesterday.
41:51Wincup.
41:52Important championship points.
41:54Van Gisbergen has forged his way forward.
41:56McLaughlin clearly got caught there and made a little mistake from the two-spot penalty that he had.
42:03Perkat in seventh.
42:06Dave Reynolds, eighth.
42:07Tander and Cawthard.
42:09Nine and ten.
42:10He's allowed him really struggling, Crumpo, to keep Rick Kelly at bay.
42:15Well, the only way that he can drive the car straight at the moment is to drive it a little slower.
42:20And that's what's hurting him.
42:23Can't afford to bag it up.
42:24Can't afford to be wagging the tail.
42:26It'll superheat those rear tyres, make it even worse.
42:28And it just appears to be lacking slightly in brake stability.
42:32This is Will Davison now, right up behind.
42:34Also see there, what's the difference in the body language between the Nissan Altima and the Hulton Commodore of Craig Lowndes.
42:43The way that the cars react to the first point of steering and the way that then Lowndes has to apply the brake and maintain some brake is the bit that he's complaining about that instability.
42:54Also the way they ride the bumps, a lot of the cars in that particular zone then from 10 to 11 ride the bumps differently.
43:03That battle that we were looking at there before was 15 to 19.
43:06It's like it's the world championship, but those guys will lament what the result sheet reads like at the end of it, but they're still working incredibly hard.
43:15It was Ingle in 19th place.
43:16And here is our race leader, comfortable margin, 2.4 seconds.
43:19And what I loved about his chat this morning was that he said he didn't drive very well yesterday.
43:25Mark Winterbottom was unhappy with his performance.
43:28He has bounced back very well, Combo.
43:30Bounced back brilliantly.
43:31He was the winner of race number nine at Winton after a tough day on the Friday.
43:38Two corners remaining.
43:41Nice, steady wheel work.
43:44Really good drive.
43:45And that is a very, very good drive by Mark Winterbottom to take victory in race number 11.
43:51The ITM 500 Auckland.
43:54And home by two seconds in the final analysis from James Courtney.
43:58Yeah, no, no, I'll get back.
43:59And it's a first and a third for this crew here.
44:02Pepsi Max Ford Performance Racing, Chas Mostyn.
44:05That's a mighty performance for him in third spot.
44:10And for Mostyn, that'll be season best result for him, particularly after the wild day yesterday.
44:17That's a nice reward.
44:19It certainly is.
44:19All the drama with his contact with David Wall at turn 11 and pretty uneasy night for him.
44:26He hasn't liked the car.
44:28He needed some more confidence in the car.
44:29He qualified better, but he raced very well then.
44:32Didn't get caught up in any of the early exchanges.
44:37And Winterbottom has also just, I think his performance there has just shown a very professional response.
44:46He's got to come back from bad days, and that was a fantastic drive set up by a really good start and a very nice, smooth.
44:56They've had great car speed.
44:58A lot of the places we've said they should have won some of these races, but they have today shown that the car has a real ability to look after the tyres and maintain a very smooth race win.
45:09Race win number two for Mark Winterbottom for 2014.
45:12Career victory number 25 and a big bundle of points that will eat a big chunk of that margin that Craig Lowndes enjoyed coming into this race number 11.
45:24So Winterbottom position one, his rival in the championship, Craig Lowndes finishing in 16th position.
45:33Congratulations to Frosty.
45:34That was nice work.
45:36Basically got it all done at the start.
45:37Got away beautifully on the clean side of the racetrack, and at that stage, really thereafter, was just a question of gap maintenance.
45:45It was, wasn't it?
45:47They're good drives, those ones, Neil.
45:48When you use your head, you don't go too fast.
45:50You don't make little mistakes.
45:51Great reaction from Ford fans.
45:54A lot of Ford fans in this part of the world.
45:56Come on in, buddy.
45:59Graham McPherson, his engineer.
46:01Remember, Pete Travaskis, his media man.
46:04Frosty, like Jamie Wincup, has a new engineer this year.
46:07So you've got to get those relationships working.
46:09They don't come easily.
46:10It takes time to learn, to understand, to speak the same language.
46:15But they've done a great job of that today in total harmony to get a terrific result.
46:19Mark Winterbottom gets the job done over James Courtney and his teammate, Chas Mostert.
46:25Let's get down with Mark Beretta.
46:27Hey, Frosty, congratulations.
46:29Great result.
46:29You told us just before you went out that it was all about their head and getting it in the right spot.
46:33Hey, you nailed it.
46:33That was a beautiful drive.
46:34Yeah, it was really good.
46:36Obviously, the start was important to beat him off the line.
46:39And, yeah, just to get the wins awesome.
46:42You know, I drove.
46:43I put my hand up.
46:44I drove bad yesterday.
46:44And I had a fair bit of redemption to pay the guys.
46:47They were up all night, changing bolts and uprights and rear end.
46:51And, you know, it was a bad day yesterday.
46:53But awesome to turn it around with a win.
46:55Championship update.
46:56You trail Craig Lowndes by 18 points.
46:58This is right on now for this afternoon.
47:00Yeah, it's right on.
47:01You know, we're hitting form and it's starting to go quite well.
47:05So off three for the next one, which is a good position.
47:08Obviously got a reasonably good car pace.
47:11So, but, yeah, awesome to get a forward win here.
47:13I know the Kiwis have it a bit hard for the forward side.
47:16I think that's number three in about 30.
47:18So hopefully we can make a few more this weekend.
47:21But thanks for keep supporting us and trying to get another win.
47:24Hey, great delivery.
47:24Well done.
47:25While you're here, we've got a magnificent trophy for you too.
47:27Congratulations from the team at ITM.
47:30And we're over to James Courtney now.
47:32An awesome result for James.
47:33It's been a great weekend already.
47:35And, James, well done.
47:37A second for Holden.
47:38Good result.
47:38Yeah, no, first would have been better.
47:41But, no, to come home second.
47:42Yeah, we got polled in.
47:43Quite get the start we wanted.
47:44But, no, Mark had good pace.
47:46So, well done to Mark.
47:48And, yeah, good points for us.
47:50Can you squeeze a bit more out of the car in this next race?
47:52Yeah, we didn't get a lap in the next qualifying.
47:54So we're starting 11th.
47:55So pole to 11th.
47:56So I got our work cut out for us this afternoon.
47:58But the car's running real good.
48:00So we'll fire through and put on a bit of show for everyone later on.
48:03All right, great stuff.
48:04Please accept your trophy on behalf of ITM.
48:06Our major sponsor, James Courtney.
48:08Congratulations.
48:09And, Chas Mostert, an awesome result for you, third on the podium.
48:13It has been an improving cycle this year to bed in with this team.
48:16That's a strong result.
48:17Yeah, I don't think I've ever been so excited to see number three come up.
48:20It's been a tough start to the year.
48:22And to be up on the podium with Frosty, it's fantastic.
48:25I can't thank the Car 6 team enough and all of FBR.
48:28Yeah, we got there.
48:29We finally got a podium.
48:30Really ecstatic for this year.
48:31So hopefully we'll just keep chipping along and get some more
48:33and hopefully jump up the standings a bit.
48:35Chas, how much more improvement is left, do you think?
48:38In the car or myself?
48:39Both.
48:40I think a little bit more in the car, just getting me used to the car.
48:43And I think, you know, every time I go out, I'm learning something new.
48:45So it's fantastic to have a teammate with a wealth of experience like Frosty
48:49because every time we go out, we learn something new.
48:51Well, it's really exciting for us to watch as well.
48:52We've got a trophy for you for third place as well.
48:55Congratulations, Chas Mostert.
48:59He did a great job, wasn't it?
49:02His confirmation of the unofficial results.
49:04And Mark Winterbottom, the race victory.
49:06Just a whisker under two seconds the margin in the final analysis
49:09from James Courtney and Chas Mostert, who we just spoke to.
49:12And that is a nice, steady, solid points-earning performance for him.
49:15And to get on the podium, impressive.
49:17Jamie Winkup in search of that record sixth title.
49:20Fourth position for him.
49:21Shane Van Gisbergen.
49:22It was a bit of a weird up-and-down race for Shane.
49:24Then McLaughlin, Perkat, Reynolds, Tanda and Fabian Coulthard.
49:27Scotty Pine.
49:28Nice work for Wilson Security.
49:29Jason Bright, big clawback, 12th position,
49:32basically was at the back of the field, as you suggested before.
49:35And all of that gang from Lee Holdsworth down to Russell Ingle.
49:39It's wild.
49:39It was a full-on, full-blown boxing match, wasn't it?
49:42But they'll all come back for race number 12 very shortly
49:45with some tweaks in their car.
49:47Let's get down to Larko.
49:48Yeah, just going to pull up a chair here
49:49and have a sit with my buddy Craig Lowndes, mate.
49:53Sometimes we've just got to be frank, haven't we?
49:54Wait for a guy that's come as a championship lead.
49:56I know it's not your fault.
49:57It's a pretty ordinary performance.
49:58We could see you were struggling with the car,
50:00the rear of it squirreling all around.
50:02And when we can see it on the TV,
50:03I can only imagine what it's like in the cockpit.
50:05Well, yeah, look, it's one of those things.
50:07If we get some time, we'll sit down and we'll go through it.
50:09But we don't have a lot of time.
50:10I've got 50 minutes before we're back out there again.
50:12So, yeah, tough times.
50:13It must be, mate.
50:14And it's hard for...
50:14I guess you're sitting at home.
50:15It's hard to understand because you're so competitive.
50:17I can see you're not happy, and that's very unusual.
50:19I know you're smiling, but you're not.
50:21I've seen you throw a lot of springs and dampers
50:22at this car this weekend.
50:23It's really unusual for this team
50:24because you performed so well.
50:26Oh, no, Jamie, I think he had a good run then.
50:27So I think that's...
50:28You know, I think he's on top of what he wants to do
50:30and everything else.
50:30So I don't think it's a team-related.
50:32I think it's something that's coming to grips
50:33with the track and the car and everything else.
50:35And you're right, we've thrown a lot of things at it.
50:37And, of course, you know,
50:38we're still sort of still throwing things at it.
50:39So we'll see what happens.
50:41It's obviously...
50:42It's not over yet.
50:42We've still got another race to go.
50:43And then, of course, more importantly, tomorrow,
50:45we've got to obviously learn what we can today
50:46and then obviously see what we can do tomorrow.
50:48Best of luck, mate.
50:49We like it when you're up there.
50:50Oh, cheers.
50:51Hey, Jason Bright,
50:52what a ding-dong heavyweight race you were involved in.
50:54What was going on out there?
50:56Oh, just ended up back with a bunch of guys
50:58we shouldn't be with, basically.
50:59And, you know, I got pushed off the road first by Shane
51:02and that sort of put me on the back foot
51:04and then Slade did the same to me
51:05and then pushed me all the way through the last corner.
51:08And, you know, we cop a penalty for, you know, bumping him.
51:11You know, it's just, yeah, a little bit disappointing.
51:14You know, we've got a quick car.
51:15We want to win that JR trophy
51:16and we're doing it the hard way, unfortunately.
51:19But, you know, tomorrow is big points.
51:21We've got another tough afternoon today with starting 14.
51:23So, you know, we've got to work our way up in that one as well.
51:26Hopefully we don't come across the same guys.
51:28Did you get to a point with Tim Slade
51:29where you just thought to yourself, enough's enough?
51:32Well, I mean, we were just still racing, you know,
51:33and I had inside for that left-hander
51:36and then we bumped and that sort of tangles you up
51:39and you run wide.
51:39But, you know, I passed a lot of guys at the hairpin then
51:42and didn't push anyone off the road yet.
51:44I got pushed off by two guys that tried to pass me there.
51:47So that's pretty disappointing.
51:49You know, they say at the driver's briefing not to, you know,
51:52not to do that.
51:52Make sure you leave racing room
51:54and you can race all the way side by side up to the last corner
51:57like I did with the two Jack Daniels cars.
51:59You know, it makes a good racing.
52:00But when you've got one car off on the grass, you know,
52:03you're losing a bunch of spots.
52:04So it's a little bit disappointing.
52:05You know, I'm out there to race side by side, not on the grass.
52:08Brody, the flip side of that was that was the comeback of the day.
52:11The way you got yourself back up into the top 12 or so
52:14was an awesome drive.
52:15Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that.
52:17I mean, we came in, got tyres.
52:18The steering was pretty bent after that.
52:19So, you know, we were a little bit lame.
52:22You know, I don't think I would have been able to move up without that.
52:24So, you know, hopefully the guys can get it fixed
52:27for this afternoon's race and we can, you know, have a good run.
52:29Great to see you back out there, mate.
52:30Well done.
52:31Cheers, mate.
52:32Can I say, mate, I love watching you on this track, Shane,
52:34because there's so much body language from the car,
52:36but you've got better natural car control, I believe,
52:38than anyone in the field.
52:39Great to watch.
52:39Position five.
52:40You must be pleased with that.
52:41Jeez, thanks for that.
52:42But, yeah, no, that was good.
52:43I just didn't get it together in qualifying.
52:45We're a bit further back than we would have liked
52:47and the car's quick, as we've shown,
52:49but when you're stuck behind somewhere in here,
52:50you've got to be aggressive to get past them
52:52and I went back to eighth and got back up to fifth.
52:54So, we have good speed.
52:55So, next race, hopefully a bit further up.
52:57All those Kiwis on the hill there, mate,
52:59they're worth about three tenths, eh?
53:00Good luck this afternoon.
53:01Cheers, eh?
53:01Thanks.
53:02Did a great job, Shane Van Gisbergen,
53:05and extra incentive with all the fans here.
53:07Here's our race 11 highlights.
53:10It was all going on out there.
53:11That was an intense race, MS.
53:12It certainly was.
53:13And that was the battle there with Tanda and Todd Kelly.
53:16Big off the road there for Craig Lowndes.
53:19And this was the controversy between Tim Slade
53:22and Jason Bright.
53:24Contact at the final corner
53:26and then contact at turn six.
53:28Bit of push and shove.
53:30And Bright got a drive-through penalty.
53:32Tim Slade out with the left-hand front wheel
53:34hanging off the super cheap auto Commodore.
53:37Went right, come in.
53:38He put tyres on.
53:40And then after the safety car
53:41come from a absolute firm last
53:44to forge his way through the field.
53:47A lot of battles going on.
53:48Will Davison got caught at the start.
53:50He was parked off the start line.
53:51He was caught there having a little spin there
53:53with Dale Wood.
53:54And then this was the reason for the safety car.
53:57Robert Dalgren on fire
53:59and blocking the pit exit.
54:01So Tim Schenker put the safety car out
54:03but then it all went off.
54:04Van Giesbergen down the inside of Perkett.
54:07There was a bit of bump and grind there
54:08with Dave Reynolds.
54:11And as they got round the fast stuff
54:13this was an incredible spin.
54:15Must have had some left-hand rear tyre damage
54:17or something, Neil,
54:17because you don't normally see
54:18the car's guy right there, Jack Perkins.
54:20And as it leapt over the kerb
54:21maybe it did some damage to that guard
54:23which was why we saw that subsequent replay
54:25of Jack as well.
54:27Jason Bright was in everything today
54:28including a massive callback.
54:30How's the angry pack that he's racing here?
54:32But he got valuable points for his trouble.
54:34He does start 14th in the next one
54:36so he'll be right back in the middle of it again.
54:38There's Shane Van Giesbergen.
54:39We spoke to him just a few moments ago
54:41and here's that thing I spoke about.
54:42I reckon this will be to do
54:44with what happened in that earlier incident
54:46but literally ripping bodywork off
54:48that Geldwin entry.
54:50Lowndes had the big struggle going on.
54:52He was assaulted by James Moffat
54:54and the Jack Daniels Nissan as well
54:56but nobody could lay a glove on this man.
54:59That was a great performance, Mark Winterbottom.
55:02Two successive race meetings
55:04where he's grabbed maximum points
55:06and the trophy at the end of it
55:08and he's clawing back that margin
55:10to Craig Lowndes.
55:11He's got it now down to 18 points.
55:14There it is.
55:15Confirmation for you.
55:16Fabian Coulthard just continues to trundle along
55:17even when he doesn't have a great car.
55:19He's making it work.
55:20He's doing a nice job, isn't he?
55:22Same with Courtney and Winkup.
55:33So we take a breath.
55:35We think now about what happens in the next one.
55:37It's all going to happen again.
55:38We've got another 100 kilometres to come
55:40and we've got 35 laps.
55:42There's a bit of damage to repair.
55:44There's some changes to make.
55:46The pole position, well, it's great news for the Kiwis.
55:48Scotty McLachlan.
55:49Don't forget, New South Wales viewers,
55:51switch now to 7.2 to continue to enjoy your V8 supercars.
55:55And welcome, Sydney viewers, on 7.2.
56:08And coming up, boy, a big afternoon to come.
56:11We've got Scafie's top picks from Pukekohe.
56:13There's lots to choose from.
56:14Some great moments here.
56:16We're going to see Murph and the New Zealand V8 Super Tour
56:18has hit the track.
56:19Greg Murphy, part of our team, is leading that championship
56:22and later on, live this afternoon, race number 12,
56:26100 kilometres of super sprint action, V8 supercar style.
56:29Wow, what a weekend of sport on 7, the footy.
56:53We've got Stakes Day in Sydney and V8 supercar action.
56:56There's plenty of it here.
56:57And good news for Ford fans and Mark Winterbottom
56:59grabs the points in race number 11.
57:01Fantastic performance.
57:02Kiss from Renee, the wife, and everybody at Pepsi Max
57:05Ford Performance Racing.
57:07Thrilled with that one because teammate, Chas Mostert,
57:09grabbing a spot on the podium as well.
57:11Let's get down to the garage.
57:13Barrettes is down there in the Nissan garage.
57:14Tell us all about the logistics of a flyaway.
57:17Logistics, Neil, are absolutely extraordinary.
57:20When you walk in the garage here for any of the teams,
57:22it looks like a garage from any other round.
57:25All the toolboxes are here, the wheels are here, the tools are here,
57:28everything the team needs.
57:29So how does it all come together?
57:31Well, would you believe getting the cars here is the easy part?
57:34They go on to specially made trays.
57:36They double stack, one on top of each other,
57:38and they're loaded into the cargo hold of 747 cargo planes.
57:42Now, these are not your regular 747s with passengers.
57:45These are specially built cargo planes that travel the world.
57:48Everything goes on.
57:49So what does that mean?
57:50It means that all this gear has to go into two containers.
57:54Every team has two containers,
57:56and that's all your spare parts, your tools, everything you need.
57:59They can weigh up to 3,500 kilograms each.
58:02So no matter how you want to load them up,
58:04how you want to take them, that's your weight limit.
58:06Now, what do they look like when they're fully packed?
58:08Well, by the way, they can take 24 wheels in them.
58:11This is what they look like each one when they're fully packed.
58:14In fact, Dave, why don't you take everyone over,
58:15have a look inside there,
58:17because they sit at the back of the garage.
58:19This is all done by Gibson Freight.
58:20They're an Australian company,
58:22and they've done the same thing for Formula One
58:23and MotoGP around the world.
58:26Inside most of these containers,
58:28you'll find an engine, a gearbox, the 24 wheels,
58:30two front bumpers and a rear bumper.
58:33And the deal is it all comes back home.
58:35So as soon as the race finishes,
58:37all of this gets loaded up again.
58:39The two cars go back on the tray.
58:41They're stacked.
58:41They go in the tummy of the 747.
58:43The two containers as well.
58:44Now, the guarantee is, at the end of it,
58:47is that Gibsons, from the time the plane is wheels down,
58:50they will have all of this back in the team garages at home in 12 hours.
58:54It is an amazing operation.
58:56In fact, it is the biggest logistical operation in Australian sport.
59:01Does a great job, doesn't he?
59:02Thanks very much, Barrett.
59:03The boys at Gibson Freight look after us at V8 Supercars,
59:06and we thank them.
59:07We're going to take another break.
59:08When we come back, we've got Scafie's Top 5 from Pukekohe.
59:11There's lots to get through this afternoon.
