00:00:00Check out this, the Chicken Hawk, built with spares and scrap parts, a team from the New Zealand Air Force threw their own dollars at this project out of their own pockets.
00:00:10The Chicken Hawk will be auctioned to raise dollars for the Missing Wingman Trust charity.
00:00:15The charity provides assistance to families who've lost loved ones who served in the New Zealand Air Force.
00:00:19You can see the details on screen there if you would like to help out.
00:00:22Well, regular viewers of our coverage may recall last year the Anzac Challenge where we had three Aussies and three Kiwis have a bit of a crack.
00:00:32Now, the Aussies actually won the competition, but in fact I think it was the sheep that got the job done, if you recall the particular story, which was very funny at the time.
00:00:40We've rounded a bunch of blokes up together once again, the second annual Anzac Challenge and Michael Caruso is your host.
00:00:52We're here in Auckland for the second annual Drivers' Challenge.
00:00:59This year we've enlisted the New Zealand Defence Force to help us with a special Anzac Day Challenge.
00:01:04Here with me I have the Aussie team, James Moffat, David Reynolds and Will Davidson.
00:01:09Boys, are you feeling really excited to defend your title today?
00:01:12Yeah, looking forward to it, Caruso. Obviously we've got a bit of pressure to back it up from last year.
00:01:16We've got Willie D along to replace Holdsey from last year, so yeah, excited to see what we've got in store for us.
00:01:22Righto, well where are these Kiwis?
00:01:24Oh, look at them.
00:01:26Here they are.
00:01:28Fellas, us Kiwis are ready, what do you got?
00:01:30I went to the hand zone
00:01:35I went to the hand zone
00:01:42Well I'm here with the boys on the ever so impressive HMNZS Canterbury.
00:01:51The first challenge has been designed by the Air Force of New Zealand, which the boys will have to pack a parachute, with the first team to finish that, will win.
00:01:59On your marks, get ready, go!
00:02:02How are we going boys, all right?
00:02:06Going all right?
00:02:07Oh, you think Moss used to be driving a parachute.
00:02:09Ha ha ha!
00:02:10Boys, you guys don't look far away, we're nearly getting it in there.
00:02:14Nearly done, the Aussies aren't far behind you.
00:02:16You going all right, mate?
00:02:17Yeah, I can't pack a sleeping bag, so I'm struggling here.
00:02:21We'll put it through the little hole, Dave, you really caught this part.
00:02:25The on-track rivalries are starting to come out here from the Aussies, we need me to work as a team.
00:02:30Ram it!
00:02:31New Zealand boys, here we go, they've just put the lid on, it looks like.
00:02:34Fabian looks like he's taking well in control of this.
00:02:36Team leader, Fabian?
00:02:38Just concentrating, bro.
00:02:40Just, good chat.
00:02:41Good chat, good chat.
00:02:42Yeah, what's up?
00:02:44Well done boys, and they're done.
00:02:46You've been beat, fellas.
00:02:47We'll let it down.
00:02:53Our second challenge has been designed by the New Zealand Army.
00:02:57The boys will have to put a backpack on, carry a piece of equipment up to the truck and come back.
00:03:02The first team through wins.
00:03:04On your marks, get set, go!
00:03:08Oh, good start there by the New Zealanders.
00:03:10Oh, James Moffat is absolutely taken off.
00:03:13Come on, Jimmy Moffat, look at him go!
00:03:16Unbelievable leg drive from him.
00:03:19Straight in the back, he hasn't mucked around at all.
00:03:23Here we go, very good lead here.
00:03:25He's absolutely staked with himself.
00:03:27Oh, they've opted to go to Will Davidson.
00:03:29New Zealanders have gone to Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:03:32Wow, this is intense.
00:03:34Oh, the New Zealanders, oh, they've done great.
00:03:37Here we go, they're coming back again.
00:03:43Guys, how are we going here?
00:03:46New Zealanders are back, going over to Scotty McLaughlin to lead the team home.
00:03:50Oh, here goes Reynolds.
00:03:51Here he goes.
00:03:53This is going to be a run to the line now.
00:03:56They're looking good here, they're head-to-head.
00:03:58Oh, Reynolds, he's done it.
00:04:00Oh, boys.
00:04:04Scotty McLaughlin, well done, boys.
00:04:07Mate, you just got under the bag and just took off.
00:04:09Unbelievable.
00:04:10That was the best start I've had all year, Karoosh.
00:04:12Well done, guys.
00:04:15Let's go to the next challenge.
00:04:16Our teams are locked one all and the third and deciding challenge has been designed by the
00:04:22New Zealand Navy.
00:04:23The first two drivers will run over, hoist a flag of their choosing.
00:04:27The last driver will run over and put up their national flag.
00:04:30The first team to do that will win the Anzac Drivers Challenge.
00:04:33On your marks, get set, go.
00:04:41Oh, James has already chosen a flag.
00:04:43He hasn't mucked around.
00:04:46Shane's going all right.
00:04:47He's already hoisted.
00:04:48He's up.
00:04:50Reynolds has come over too now.
00:04:52Reynolds, that's an interesting flag you've got there, mate.
00:04:56Now the New Zealanders going, well, all three of them are over here, actually.
00:04:58I don't know what's going on there.
00:05:00All three flags up.
00:05:01Well done.
00:05:01It looks like the New Zealanders have won.
00:05:04Well done, boys.
00:05:05Yeah.
00:05:07We cheated Deluxe and we still lost, which means it's corrupt.
00:05:11Bench, we're in New Zealand.
00:05:13Scotty, you hoisted the national flag in New Zealand.
00:05:16That must be a proud moment to win this challenge today.
00:05:18Yeah, proud moment.
00:05:19You know, last year throwing a sheep in the pen was pretty cool.
00:05:21And now this year hoisting the New Zealand flag is a big thing for me.
00:05:25So huge for my career.
00:05:26And the winner of the second annual Anzac Drivers Challenge is the Kiwis.
00:05:31Well done, boys.
00:05:32Thank you, mate.
00:05:48Welcome back to our coverage of the V8s.
00:05:49We're in Auckland this weekend.
00:05:51It's a vibrant city and home to 1.4 million plus people.
00:05:54And the Sky Tower defines the CBD skyline.
00:05:57There's so much to see and you can even leap off the tower.
00:06:00All 192 metres, if you want to, or the harbour bridge.
00:06:04There's heaps of hidden treasures in and around Auckland.
00:06:06There's a beautiful harbour, great islands.
00:06:08Jump on the ferry downtown and head off in virtually any direction.
00:06:11Wow, have we got a busy weekend here.
00:06:13The ITM 500 Auckland for V8 supercars.
00:06:16We've just run qualifying number 10 for race 10.
00:06:20And Jason Bryant has grabbed the pole position.
00:06:22Isn't that a terrific story and an enormous crowd already on this Anzac Day holiday.
00:06:26And today, Anzac Day is a national day of remembrance for all of us in Australia and New Zealand.
00:06:32It's a tribute that commemorates the many Australians and New Zealanders who served and sadly lost their lives in wars,
00:06:38conflicts and peacekeeping operations around the world.
00:06:41Today recognises their incredible contribution.
00:06:44And it's a reminder to all of us of the amazing job the Armed Forces did and continue to provide in both countries.
00:06:51For the special trackside ceremony, here's Greg Murphy.
00:06:55Ladies and gentlemen, please be upstanding.
00:06:58We are all here to mark Anzac Day, a day of special significance both in Australia and here in New Zealand.
00:07:13This year marks the 99th anniversary of the landings by Anzac troops at Gallipoli in 1915.
00:07:20The beginning of the first major campaign in which New Zealand and Australian troops were engaged in war.
00:07:26It is imperative that the bonds of comradeship that were born on these battlefields are embraced by future generations.
00:07:36Today, we are all joined by a common passion and with this action we are doing our part to ensure they are remembered.
00:07:46Please welcome V8 Supercar Chaplain, the Reverend Gary Coleman.
00:07:50Let us pray.
00:07:53Gracious God and Father, we are standing here today in remembrance and thankfulness for the heritage of sacrifice,
00:07:59courage and mateship indelibly impressed into our Anzac identities.
00:08:04It reminds us that no freedom is given without cost and no privilege is received without great sacrifice.
00:08:10And Lord, we need your help to pass this on to our current generations where freedoms are taken for granted.
00:08:17It is to our loss if we do not sincerely remember those who have given their lives in wars
00:08:21and those who carry the burden of loved ones lost and the character it produces.
00:08:27Today, we celebrate the camaraderie of our cross-Tasman neighbourhood captured in the sharing of Pit Lane
00:08:32with teams from both New Zealand and Australia who compete and cooperate in our sport.
00:08:37We are the richer for this investment in brotherhood and battle.
00:08:41You have created us in your image to have personality, character and creativity
00:08:45and also to share the burdens individually carried.
00:08:48We humbly ask for a renewing of courage and commitment to face the future conflicts
00:08:53that will shape our children's lives and we do so in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
00:08:58Please welcome able musician Oliver Furnow of the Royal New Zealand Navy to perform the last post
00:09:08that will then be followed by a moment's silence.
00:09:19Thanks, everybody.
00:09:42Sayon.
00:13:13Ladies and gentlemen, please remain standing for the national anthems of Australia and
00:13:26New Zealand to be performed by Anna Hawkins.
00:13:28Australians, oh, let us rejoice for we are young and free.
00:13:45With golden soil and wealth for toil, our home is girt by sea.
00:13:57Our land abounds in nature's gifts of beauty rich and rare.
00:14:07With history's page, let every state advance Australia fair.
00:14:17In joyful strains then let us sing, Advance Australia fair.
00:15:31God of nations, at thy feet.
00:15:34In the bonds of love we meet, hear our voices we entreat, God defend our free land.
00:15:54God pacific's triple star, from the shafts of strife and war, make her praises heard afar, God defend New Zealand.
00:16:24Ladies and gentlemen, thank you very much.
00:16:36A moving tribute and ceremony and our sincere thanks to all involved.
00:16:42We are counting down to race number 10. Stay with us.
00:16:44To race on the Friday, on Anzac Day, I think is something that's going to be, I guess, emotional for all the drivers and all the teams, everyone in V8 Supercars.
00:16:59We always want to go well in front of a home crowd. Not that we don't want to go well while we're racing in Australia, but definitely being in front of a home crowd.
00:17:05But, you know, the Anzac spirit and things like that, I think it's going to be one of those events for us that's really going to stand out in the calendar.
00:17:11There's a strong rivalry between the Kiwis and the Aussies, and we want to go over there on their home soil and take it away from them.
00:17:19And, you know, to do it on Anzac weekend would be pretty special.
00:17:24New Zealand and Australia was built around this day.
00:17:27Just looking forward to, you know, going out there and doing the best that we can put on a show and on such a pretty awesome day.
00:17:34The spirit of the Anzac is the reason why we're here today.
00:17:38For us as V8 Supercars to come together and race on Anzac Day, I'm sure all 25 drivers on the grid will want to put on a fantastic show for everybody in Australia and New Zealand.
00:17:54Anzac, for me, is an opportunity to remember those that went to war for our country.
00:18:17It's a moment where we can reflect upon the people that went and thank those that made the ultimate sacrifice, but also survived to tell the tar.
00:18:32Last year we ran the Anzac appeal livery on the car with great success and great support.
00:18:38This year we've stepped it up.
00:18:39The car looks a lot better.
00:18:41It's a lot brighter, obviously, with the livery we've got this year.
00:18:44But anything we can do to raise awareness is fantastic.
00:18:49So it's a great initiative.
00:18:51Pretty special for me to be able to give something back to the community.
00:18:54And I think this is a great way of doing it.
00:18:58It's a great opportunity for us to showcase the Anzac spirit.
00:19:02Obviously racing an Australian series in New Zealand against some Kiwi.
00:19:06So hopefully we can keep that whole Anzac spirit alive.
00:19:09It attracts our battlefield.
00:19:10We go out there and fight for honour.
00:19:13And hopefully we can come over the right result.
00:19:16And the Holton Racing team carrying special livery this weekend to commemorate this Anzac Day.
00:19:28And those wonderful images were shot at the War Memorial in Melbourne.
00:19:32Incidentally, James has qualified sixth.
00:19:35His teammate Garth Tander has qualified 16th for this one.
00:19:38Race number 10 coming up.
00:19:40Fourth in the championship at the moment, JC.
00:19:43Race winner of race number three in Adelaide.
00:19:45His teammate, incidentally, Garth Tander, has had a pole position here previously.
00:19:49And he's won a couple of races.
00:19:51James is well and truly in contention in this championship year as they pull into the grid area.
00:19:57Earlier in the day, we asked you the question, which of the Kiwi drivers might dominate this weekend?
00:20:02Well, so far, the numbers are sitting with Scotty McLaughlin.
00:20:06You can vote on vhsupercars.com.au or grab the 7 Sport app and have your say.
00:20:12Shane Van Gisbergen sitting in there as well at the moment.
00:20:15He's poised best in this current line-up.
00:20:18He's qualified third for this race.
00:20:21All right.
00:20:22Time now for the Penrite proper racing line race facts with Mark Larkham, who's got a distinctly Kiwi versus Aussie theme going.
00:20:29Well, there's plenty of Anzac spirit going on down this pit lane, mate.
00:20:32But so what I thought I'd do is just let's have a bit of a look at who is Kiwi and who is Aussie.
00:20:36So I've laid out here the top 10 cars in the championship from the respective countries.
00:20:41So from New Zealand, we've got Fabian Coulthard, Shane Van Gisbergen, Scotty McLaughlin, of course.
00:20:46And in the Aussie corner, we've got Craig Lowndes, Mark Winterbottom, James Courtney, Jamie Winkup coming in there from behind.
00:20:52So I've done a little bit of an analysis.
00:20:54And if I could do a graph, I'd move that boot right up to about there into the back of that Kiwi.
00:21:00And there's a bit of good Aussie Anzac spirit for you.
00:21:12So cars on the grid.
00:21:1625 cars take their place.
00:21:19And sadly for Rick Kelly, he'll find himself at the back of this queue after being involved in that red flag incident at the top of the previous qualifying.
00:21:30But they're all going to be chasing Jason Bright, Jamie Winkup and Shane Van Gisbergen.
00:21:34He's Rihanna.
00:21:35Yeah, just on the grid, soaking up all the action at the moment.
00:21:38And joining me, it's Mitch McLanagan from the New Zealand Blacklaps.
00:21:42Now, Mitch, this is your first time at a V8 supercar event.
00:21:44And what a one to be at.
00:21:45Oh, it's been an absolute cracker of a day so far and really looking forward to seeing some good competitive racing and enjoying the rest of the day.
00:21:52There's three Kiwis out there on the grid.
00:21:54Have you got a hot tip?
00:21:56Oh, I have to have to sit by Shane.
00:21:58I think, you know, he's been in good form and it'll be interesting to see how he goes today, even with the sun coming out.
00:22:04Enjoy your weekend.
00:22:05Cheers. Thank you.
00:22:05There is Rick Kelly, 25th on this grid, time taken away from him.
00:22:13But impressive speed in these cars.
00:22:15And it's interesting because we weren't sure how they would perform here.
00:22:19They really had a struggle down in Tasmania, which took them out of championship contention in this early phase of the series, Mark.
00:22:26But there are certain tracks where the cars are working well.
00:22:28It looks at this stage like they're in reasonable position.
00:22:31This man is two, Jamie Winkup, second on the grid, so front row start for him, just 0.07 of a second between he and Jason Bright.
00:22:41Shane Van Gisburgh in third, then his teammate Craig Lowndes, that is Jamie Winkup's teammate Craig Lowndes is next.
00:22:46Well, it was a big moment here 12 months ago, of course, for Scotty McLaughlin.
00:22:50He was just 19 years of age.
00:22:52Picked yourself in that situation as the reigning development series champion, the Dunlop champion.
00:22:55He made his mark on home soil to become the youngest ever V8 supercar championship race winner right here at home at Pukekohe, driving for Gary Rogers Motorsport in the Holden.
00:23:07It was a huge moment for the locals and the crowd went absolutely crazy as they should have.
00:23:16The win at Pukekohe, mate, is something that you just never forget.
00:23:20Scott McLaughlin, the 19-year-old Kiwi, in charge of this race at Pukekohe.
00:23:25Remember the last lap, I had goosebumps going up and down my body.
00:23:28Half a lap remaining for Scott McLaughlin, the crowd is going berserk.
00:23:32I've seen all the crowd, and my mum, dad, my sister, all my mates.
00:23:35From where I started go-karting to where I was then, they were there.
00:23:38There's a new kid in town in the V8 supercars, his name is Scott McLaughlin, he's on the champions list.
00:23:44Getting out of that car, seeing Gary, seeing all the boys, is just something that will stick in my mind for a very long time.
00:23:50And to be in the record books as well, so young, is a pretty cool thing as well.
00:23:54This youngster is being compared already to the great Craig Lowndes.
00:23:59Well, if he can live up to that, it'll be some kind of career.
00:24:02Can't stop me now. Can't stop me now. Can't stop me now.
00:24:07Welcome back to our live Anzac Day coverage of race number 10 of the V8 supercars championship of 2014.
00:24:17It is the ITM 500 Pukakoe.
00:24:20We're about 40-odd minutes south of Auckland.
00:24:23Last year, four races and four big results.
00:24:25Wins for Wincup, for McLaughlin, for Will Davison and for Jason Bright.
00:24:29The boys are getting ready. Here's Rihanna.
00:24:32Jamie Wincup, that was a couple of pretty wild sessions there, practice and qualifying.
00:24:37But you've got there in the end, starting from the front row for this one.
00:24:39Yeah, we were struggling at the start. We were just grabbing on anything we could.
00:24:43And the car wasn't right, but I was still pushing hard and very, very lucky not to end up in the fence hard.
00:24:48So pulled it back out in practice, qualified second, which we're very, very happy with.
00:24:53But it's going to be a long race.
00:24:54Now, it's been a little bit weird for you the last couple of outings.
00:24:57At Tassie, complete domination by Red Bull Racing.
00:25:00And then you go to Winton and you struggled, using your words.
00:25:02You really struggled that weekend. What can you put that down to?
00:25:05It just goes to show how important setup is.
00:25:07On the cars, they're all built similar.
00:25:09We've all got about the same power.
00:25:11It just comes down to getting the tyre pressures right and the springs and the bars and the shocks and everything.
00:25:16So we got it right in Tassie. We didn't get it right at Winton.
00:25:18We're not sure. We're sort of there or thereabouts, I think, at this stage.
00:25:21Good luck.
00:25:22Thank you. Cheers.
00:25:23Hey, a good bit of Anzac spirit on the grid.
00:25:25We see it here and there, a sprinkling of it.
00:25:27There we are, lest we forget, across the front of Mark Winterbottom's car.
00:25:30There's Mark. I'm going to come back and talk to you in just a sec, mate.
00:25:32Don't you go anyway.
00:25:33You've got a race coming up.
00:25:34I was actually looking for his team principal.
00:25:36There he is over here, Tim Edwards.
00:25:38I want to grab a quick word with Tim, mate.
00:25:40Nice gesture on the front of the car, lest we forget.
00:25:42I think that's a nice touch.
00:25:43There really is some genuine spirit here, isn't there, mate?
00:25:45I mean, it's something that, you know, we all grow up knowing about Anzac Day.
00:25:49And it's just, you know, our little contribution.
00:25:50You know, it touches all of us, really.
00:25:53You know, what they've done for the country.
00:25:55All right, mate.
00:25:55Well, good luck today.
00:25:56I think a lot of focus on the Kiwis here, but I know you guys are in good shape.
00:26:00And I want to try and talk to this pilot of this car, Mark Winterbottom.
00:26:04First obvious question I've got to ask you, mate.
00:26:05Do you have a change of clothing, mate?
00:26:08A little fright there.
00:26:09Oh, yeah.
00:26:10That's scary.
00:26:11It's a quick corner.
00:26:12And I was on for a pole lap.
00:26:13And we just try and commit that little bit too much.
00:26:16And, man, that grass is incredibly slippery.
00:26:18And I don't know where I ended up.
00:26:19Bad arms and everything going everywhere.
00:26:21But, yeah, stayed relatively clean.
00:26:23But, yeah, big hit.
00:26:25It hurts.
00:26:26Mate, a very quick summary.
00:26:27There is a lot of, you know, chat about what the Red Bull team are doing, the Kiwis.
00:26:30The focus hasn't actually been on you.
00:26:32You've been slipping around in the background, but performing very well.
00:26:34You're actually in very good shape.
00:26:35Yeah, well, it's nice to be nice and quiet.
00:26:37And then you go and do something stupid like that and spin down the main straight.
00:26:40Soon sort of gets people's attention for the wrong reason.
00:26:43But, you know, quickest thing in practice.
00:26:45You know, we're on a pole lap then.
00:26:47There's no doubt about it.
00:26:48We're on a 62-9.
00:26:49But if spot's roundabouts, we're 10th.
00:26:51And the guys have fixed my car.
00:26:53And we'll keep sliding under the radar.
00:26:55And, yeah, I think we've got a quick car.
00:26:56We've got to use it.
00:26:57You can't just do stupid things.
00:26:58So we've got to use it.
00:26:59All right, mate.
00:26:59Good luck for the rest of the weekend.
00:27:00Thanks, buddy.
00:27:01Tough.
00:27:02Brad Jones, you seem unusually relaxed for the start of a race, some might say.
00:27:08Now, we know how much this weekend means to you.
00:27:10You guys still have the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy in your garage.
00:27:14And no one is allowed to take that from you.
00:27:16Absolutely, they're not.
00:27:17So, you know, I'm relaxed because we've got such a long time for the start.
00:27:19But, you know, it is serious business.
00:27:21This is a big race for us.
00:27:22We won it last year.
00:27:24You know, fingers crossed we can do it again.
00:27:25It's a pretty tall order.
00:27:26There's a lot of good people to beat.
00:27:28But we've got on to a great start.
00:27:29But Jason's got pole position in the Team VOC car.
00:27:32So, you know, you could do a lot worse for the opener.
00:27:35But we just need to see how we go in the race.
00:27:37It's been a good run for all three of your cars of late.
00:27:40Fabian and Dale Wood have both been up the front as well.
00:27:43Yep.
00:27:44Look, they're all performing really well.
00:27:45For Dale to get a podium in his third or fourth race is fantastic.
00:27:49He's, you know, over here, he's struggling a little bit because he's trying to learn the circuit.
00:27:53Fabian's going really well.
00:27:54He's strong in the championship.
00:27:55You know, Bridie's obviously doing well here.
00:27:58So, look, it's all going great.
00:27:59You know, I hope we just need to keep the momentum going.
00:28:02But so far, so good.
00:28:03Jason Bright, we've spoken earlier this year.
00:28:06And you said it's obviously not the ideal start that you would have liked compared to last year.
00:28:10Got a quick car here this weekend so far.
00:28:12The weather conditions, what do you think is going to happen?
00:28:14Well, I mean, it looks like it's going to be right for this one.
00:28:16Fingers crossed.
00:28:17And, you know, who knows what's going to happen the rest of the weekend.
00:28:19It's been pretty wild weather since we got here on Wednesday.
00:28:22It's rained on and off.
00:28:23So, you know, I think I'll be amazed if we get through the weekend with all dry running.
00:28:28How much does the Jason Richards Trophy mean to you and how much do you need that back at Albury?
00:28:32It means a lot.
00:28:33I mean, it means a lot to all the guys in the team.
00:28:35You know, they're all his friend and it means a lot to his family.
00:28:38I think that they enjoyed seeing us win it last year and it means a lot to our sponsors.
00:28:41You know, so, you know, we do want to take it home.
00:28:43I noticed they haven't raised the roof on the podium for me yet.
00:28:45So hopefully I'll sort of contain my excitement if we do happen to get on the podium this weekend.
00:28:51Good luck for this one.
00:28:52Cheers.
00:28:53Fabian Coulthard having a long, deep thinking session here.
00:28:56Mate, I mean, drivers typically on the grid.
00:28:57No, I mean, are you visualising your start, maybe the first couple of laps?
00:29:00What's going through your mind at this stage?
00:29:01Different drivers do different things?
00:29:03The first thing that's going through my mind, why am I back here?
00:29:05You know, it was a tough quali.
00:29:07You know, obviously minimal practice, a short turnaround.
00:29:10You don't really get time to change the car at all.
00:29:12But I think we've got better speed than what we've shown.
00:29:15But it's going to make it a little bit tougher than it needs to be.
00:29:17Let me just quickly put that in perspective.
00:29:19I mean, you would be disappointed in ninth, but the top 18 cars were five tenths of a second.
00:29:23So you are two tenths, that, away from pole position, P9.
00:29:27But it is hard from here in a short race, isn't it, mate?
00:29:29That's true.
00:29:29Funny as you do that.
00:29:30My dad used to do that in go-karts.
00:29:31You know, it's not far.
00:29:32You don't have to be too far off the pace.
00:29:34But, you know, look, it's going to be a long race.
00:29:36You know, we haven't run the hard tyre for a while.
00:29:37So it'll be interesting to see how we end up.
00:29:39Good luck, mate.
00:29:40The whole of this joint's behind you.
00:29:41You know that.
00:29:42Cheers.
00:29:44Ross Stone, we know that you're a proud Kiwi.
00:29:47Being here this weekend means a lot to you.
00:29:49And you guys are obviously representing the Anzacs well on the roof of both of your cars this weekend.
00:29:54Yeah, that's right.
00:29:55Actually, my father was in Egypt during the war.
00:29:58So, you know, Anzac has been one of those special days over the years.
00:30:03And winning at a weekend like this on your home soil.
00:30:07I mean, we know that you live on the Gold Coast now.
00:30:09But it is your home here in New Zealand.
00:30:11What would winning here mean to you?
00:30:13Well, that would be hard to sort of explain that.
00:30:16But the biggest thing that we've got to do here, we've got a lot of work in front of us.
00:30:21And just see how it's all in the start.
00:30:24And the race is going to be all about tyres, which is a bit boring.
00:30:27But that's how it is.
00:30:29Now, Will, obviously Lee had the win last time out.
00:30:32Both the cars qualified fairly well for this race.
00:30:35Things really are moving forward for Erebus.
00:30:37Yeah, they are moving forward.
00:30:38We probably need a little bit more engine power.
00:30:40But hopefully that's not too far away.
00:30:43And once we get that, there'll be no excuses.
00:30:46Thanks, Ross.
00:30:46Good luck.
00:30:47OK, cheers.
00:30:48Hey, one thing I want to show you down here on the grid.
00:30:50Some more great Anzac spirit.
00:30:51This is James Gorton, his car.
00:30:53Look at this beautiful livery on this car.
00:30:54Now, when we zone down in here, you can see the yellow Dunlop on the tyres.
00:30:58So that means hard tyres.
00:30:59Everyone's using hard tyres this weekend.
00:31:01What's of real interest to me, we put a little marker on the tyres at every race so we can
00:31:05identify them race to race.
00:31:06Here's the little Dunlop blue stamp they put on.
00:31:08Look at that.
00:31:08Two jandals.
00:31:09How appropriate.
00:31:11James, Courtney, firstly, look at that race suit.
00:31:15Let's have a look at that.
00:31:15Beautiful, mate.
00:31:16You guys are well and truly brought into the Anzac spirit.
00:31:18It's a great thing, mate.
00:31:19But, yeah, look, I think the cause has probably lost a little in our generation and what those
00:31:24guys went through.
00:31:24So anything we can do as a group to raise awareness is fantastic.
00:31:28And it's great from Holden's side of things to give up their space on the car and put the
00:31:33logo on there.
00:31:34Let's talk about car performance, mate.
00:31:35You must be happy the way that, I mean, the whole thing has turned the corner and this
00:31:39team as a whole is absolutely on the way up.
00:31:42Is that a fair assessment?
00:31:43Yeah, I'd like to think so.
00:31:44It's been a pretty tough slog the last few years and definitely this year is a lot more
00:31:48consistency towards the front.
00:31:49We've been on the podium at each event, which is great.
00:31:52Towards the end of last year, we had pretty good speed as well, just a lot of bad luck.
00:31:55So it's good to see a few things going our way.
00:31:57Still got a little bit to go to obviously catch and continually beat the other guys,
00:32:02but definitely pumped and excited.
00:32:05Let me quickly ask you about that.
00:32:06We look at the vision of the cars around this circuit in particular, and I mean, just on
00:32:09the television, wow, it just looks tough.
00:32:12Yeah, it's pretty hairy to tip into turn one and the thing's just all over the place.
00:32:17It's a good ride.
00:32:17It's like you're riding a bull or something.
00:32:20It's pretty exciting.
00:32:21Then you hit the curb and the thing's up on two wheels, trying to pull the thing up and
00:32:24hook it in to get out onto the back straight, have a bit of a breather, and then that breaking
00:32:28down at turn five is horrendous.
00:32:30It changes, you know, the surface is changing.
00:32:33You're trying to pull the thing up.
00:32:34It's dancing around.
00:32:35You can have 28 or 24 guys trying to pass you there.
00:32:37It's going to be pretty exciting.
00:32:38Going to be action on.
00:32:39Good luck, mate.
00:32:40Cheers, guys.
00:32:40James Courtney with the Holden Racing Team.
00:32:45The stats favour Holden.
00:32:4623 victories out of 25 races.
00:32:49We're counting down to race number 10, the V8 Supercars Championship.
00:32:52Stay with us.
00:32:52It's going to be 35 wild and exciting laps of Pukekohe, just under three kilometres.
00:33:05And our viewer vote question today, which of the Kiwi drivers will dominate this weekend?
00:33:09The numbers are clearly with Scotty McLaughlin at the moment and Volvo Polestar Racing.
00:33:13Look at that, sitting up above 65% plus at the moment.
00:33:16There is Shane Van Gisberg, and he's the best qualified in this race from position number three for Techno Autosports and VIP Pet Foods.
00:33:23And here's Rihanna.
00:33:25Shane Van Gisberg, and so far you're winning the race for the leading Kiwi on the grid.
00:33:29I know how special this place is to you and what it would mean to get a race win.
00:33:32Oh, yeah, there's still two other blokes ahead, so top Kiwis are relevant, but they're quite quick this morning.
00:33:39So we'll see how we go on the race, as everyone would have tuned up our cars, because we didn't have many laps at all.
00:33:45Good luck.
00:33:46Thanks a lot.
00:33:47Nick Perkett, I haven't spoken to you enough this year, mate.
00:33:49Great qualifying.
00:33:50You've shown great speed all this year.
00:33:52This weekend, a chance to convert that into some points.
00:33:54Yeah, hopefully get a good start and just get into a rhythm here.
00:33:57The cars, they move around a lot.
00:33:59I like to use the term squirrelly lately.
00:34:01They squirrelly around a bit, so loving the track.
00:34:05It's a big commitment track, and the last sector's awesome with the crowd up on the hill.
00:34:09Very best of luck today, Nick.
00:34:12Will Davison, top five grid position for this race, and I know how much it means to you racing on Anzac Day.
00:34:18What a special day it is for yourself.
00:34:20Yeah, what an incredible experience.
00:34:22Such a special day to be here in New Zealand.
00:34:25Remembering our Anzacs, racing on a Friday.
00:34:28It's been an intense morning and very, very proudly carrying the logo on the back windscreen.
00:34:33So let's make sure we put on a good show.
00:34:35P5's a pretty, pretty awesome start.
00:34:37Thanks, Bill.
00:34:38Good luck.
00:34:39Cheers.
00:34:40Craig Lowndes, just watching the body language of the car in the early sessions today,
00:34:44I've never seen it move around as much as it did.
00:34:46It's obviously been a battle sorting it out.
00:34:48It has luck.
00:34:48I think that, you know, this circuit obviously is quite bumpy.
00:34:51Getting it right is always a difficult part because, obviously, you want to get some high-speed stability,
00:34:55but you want to get some really low speed off the hairpin at turn eight.
00:34:58So there is a bit of a compromise, and, of course, we're lucky enough to be on the second row.
00:35:02And on the clean side of the track, mate, best of luck for a great start.
00:35:08Scott McLaughlin, this is the place where it happened for you last year.
00:35:11You remember it so well.
00:35:12How are you feeling right now coming into this one?
00:35:15Yeah, I think we're there or thereabouts.
00:35:17It's hard.
00:35:18It's been crazy.
00:35:18Like, practice qualifying now race.
00:35:20So, yeah, I think we'll be all right.
00:35:22I think it's just a matter of just surviving today and just, you know, focusing on the next couple of days as well.
00:35:27What is the difference between racing here 12 months ago as the first time debuting in the championship to this year?
00:35:33I think I sort of know what it's all about and know what's going on.
00:35:36So I'm a bit calmer now.
00:35:38Good luck, Scotty.
00:35:39Thanks.
00:35:39Here's Jason Brighton, our pole sitter.
00:35:46And this is our venue today, Scafie.
00:35:48It's 11 corners, just under three kilometres, and it's the wildest of rides.
00:35:52It certainly is, Neil.
00:35:53It's 2.91 kilometres.
00:35:55It's the third fastest in terms of average speed of the places that we go to.
00:35:59So almost half a lap or just over half a lap is full throttle, 255 kilometres an hour, and it is a very wild racetrack.
00:36:08The guys, the vision we've seen in qualifying and the guys commenting about those bumps, and they're the three sectors we've referred to.
00:36:16Sector one in the orange, the back straight section, and then this final sector, which we saw Mark Winterbottom go off the road.
00:36:24And one of the wildest moments we've seen in qualifying here in the history of the sport.
00:36:28On board with nine in-car cameras today.
00:36:31We've got the full field covered for you.
00:36:33That's Fabian Corthard.
00:36:35That's Mark Winterbottom.
00:36:36And that wasn't that.
00:36:37At the last corner, Neil, a monster moment.
00:36:40I can't believe that he didn't find the fence on the inside, and I think he probably feels exactly the same.
00:36:45Here's Scotty McLaughlin.
00:36:46Had some comms issues earlier in the day.
00:36:48Now we're looking at David Reynolds, the Botolo Ford Performance Racing.
00:36:51Ford Falcon got a big bundle of points at Winton last time out.
00:36:56Scott Pye.
00:36:58He's driven here in Toyota Racing Series cars.
00:37:01There's quite a number of rookies in the field that have not done a V8 Supercar Championship race here.
00:37:06The only guy that truly has had zero experience is actually Robert Dalton, a Swedish driver.
00:37:12Rick Kelly, he's got a big job ahead of him as well.
00:37:15He was on target for what looked to be a very good qualifying performance and then spilled it down at turns three and four.
00:37:21Got it in the gravel out there.
00:37:23And as a result of triggering the red flag, he has to start from that rear of grid position.
00:37:26Look at him all the way up the back there.
00:37:27He'll barely be able to see the lights.
00:37:29No doubt.
00:37:29And it looked like he had really good car speed.
00:37:32In fact, his brother Todd was second for a long time within that qualifying session.
00:37:37Check out the Fuso starting grid for the way in which they'll line up now for this race number 10 of the championship.
00:37:44Jason Bright starts from the pole alongside Jamie Winkup Red Bull Racing Australia.
00:37:48Row number two, best Kiwi, Shane Van Gisbergen, VIP Pet Foods and Craig Lowndes.
00:37:54Car number 888.
00:37:54Then it's Will Davis and Erebus Motorsport, Mercedes-Benz with James Courtney alongside.
00:37:59From seventh, Scotty McLaughlin, another of the high-profile Kiwis.
00:38:02Will they break through?
00:38:03Nick Perkett, terrific performance for him.
00:38:06Can't say enough about that job.
00:38:07Baby Coulthard, position nine.
00:38:09And alongside him will be Mark Winterbottom.
00:38:12And the hole of the top ten, Neil, was covered by 0.19 of a second.
00:38:16Dave Reynolds and Lee Holdsworth.
00:38:18James Moffat, Tim Slade.
00:38:20Todd Kelly, as I said, was going very well in qualifying.
00:38:23Garth Tander further down than you'd expect to see.
00:38:25Garth, 16th.
00:38:27Michael Caruso, Jack Perkins, quite a good job there.
00:38:29He was also further up the order in that session.
00:38:33Scott Pye, Russell Engel, the old enforcer.
00:38:36He'll be hard to beat again as we go through the rest of the guys.
00:38:40Chas Mostyn, back in the factory team.
00:38:43Robert Dahlgren, as you said, their only genuine rookie.
00:38:45Dale Wood did a great job at Winton.
00:38:48And Rick Kelly, what a cruel sport this is at the back of the field for bringing out the red flag in qualifying.
00:38:54That's Infuso starting grid, and this is going to be a very important run down to turn one, Neil.
00:39:00Incidentally, Nick Perk had equaled his season-best performance qualifying, had an eighth at Winton as well.
00:39:05Here's the situation in the champ points.
00:39:0728 points, the gap between Craig and Mark Winterbottom, who folded in that order at Winton.
00:39:13Fabian Coulthard's 15 points further adrift from Frosty, and then James Courtney is fourth at the moment.
00:39:18And I said at the very top of the show, Scafie, that one of the things I find interesting with six different winners and ten different guys at the podium this year,
00:39:25really don't have a picture at the moment of a clear pattern.
00:39:28It's been something of a spinning wheel, and you pin the tail on the donkey, who's going to grab a result this weekend?
00:39:33Great for us, really hard for the teams to deal with.
00:39:35Here's Jamie Winkup, Red Bull Racing Australia.
00:39:38He's had his challenges.
00:39:39Remember also, he's tried to fuse a new relationship with an engineer here, David Couchy.
00:39:44All his success previously came with Mark Dutton coaching and in his ears.
00:39:48It's a big deal, here's Larko.
00:39:50Yeah, Neil, and there's David Couchy right there, about to talk his man up.
00:39:53We've got Wally Storey going to talk Jason right up.
00:39:55All the engineers, you can see, lined up.
00:39:57Now, you can see the guys have come around here.
00:39:58They've come around online, then Jason has pulled over.
00:40:01Now, although he's position one, and you see he's nicely pulled up there on his burnout marks, he left there.
00:40:06He's going to come forward.
00:40:07The splitter, or the front air dam, can go over the white line, but the tyres cannot, and the car cannot roll.
00:40:11Well, what's odd here is that although he's on pole, you really need to be on the left-hand side for down there at turn two.
00:40:17This is going to be interesting to see who wins down there.
00:40:19And those verges are still a little wet.
00:40:22Thanks for the update, Larko.
00:40:23We're looking at Bright alongside Jamie Winkup.
00:40:27Car's just coming into position.
00:40:29Remember, it's a downhill start for those guys at the back.
00:40:31So you've got to be able to hold the car on that decline.
00:40:35That's a lot of smoke from Rick Kelly's car there at the rear of the grid.
00:40:3935 laps.
00:40:41Right, Winkup, Van Gisbergen.
00:40:44Louds, the top four on the grid.
00:40:48Racing in Auckland, and Winkup makes a great jump, and immediately grabs a car they call to, and he'll be able to close as they head down towards one.
00:41:00Cold tyres, dirty offline, and Winkup's on an absolute blinder.
00:41:05That was a fantastic start drama.
00:41:07Then for Lee Holtworth across the grass.
00:41:10Garth Tander was three wide at turn one, and he got away with it.
00:41:13So great reaction time there for Winkup.
00:41:18The secondary component at the start worked beautifully for him as well.
00:41:21He was easily able to come across to the racing line and choose precisely where he needed to be.
00:41:26Goughlin under pressure here from Percat on his inside.
00:41:30And Scotty fares poorly there, ends up with some bump and grind, finds the grass.
00:41:36He drops spots in the process for Goughlin.
00:41:39That was pretty willing with Percat.
00:41:41Percat on the inside, then pushed Scott wide on the exit.
00:41:45Scott probably didn't give him enough room between the right and the left either.
00:41:48So there was a bit of an each-way bet on who was at fault.
00:41:51This is Wilde around the outside at the final corner.
00:41:55That is as brave as you would ever see.
00:41:58Look at the body language.
00:41:59Holdsworth, huge slide through turn 11.
00:42:03They're still sorting cold tyres, trying to argue over track position, and that was Wilde.
00:42:08Side by side, McLaughlin and Holdsworth through those last three corners.
00:42:13Board with Reynolds, right up in behind Holdsworth.
00:42:15We saw the big slide that he had going, and the two guys got away with that.
00:42:19That was very high-level, high-commitment driving from Holdsworth and McLaughlin.
00:42:25So Winkup, the great start.
00:42:28There's a change here for second and third because Bright Van Gisburgh and Lowndes.
00:42:34Courtney there, fifth.
00:42:36Davison, Percat, Winterbottom.
00:42:38Cawthard, Tander.
00:42:39That's your top ten.
00:42:40McLaughlin has fallen back to 11.
00:42:43Tander's done a nice job there.
00:42:44He qualified 16th, so he's made it into the top ten.
00:42:47So opportunistic moves for Garth Tander.
00:42:49Twice a race winner here and a former pole sitter.
00:42:52It's pressure on, though, in the mid-pack at the moment.
00:42:54And the guy that's having to scramble back out of a little disaster in the opening lap is McLaughlin.
00:42:59McLaughlin got shoved wide down there in that exchange.
00:43:02But I think Percat had found the grass, and that's costing.
00:43:06Winkup's got 0.7, the second over Bright.
00:43:08Then it's Van Gisburgh and Lowndes.
00:43:09Courtney, Will Davison, a good strong start.
00:43:12Percat, oh, a problem here for David Wall.
00:43:15That's huge damage left rear corner of the Dick Johnson racing car.
00:43:20And that's the change of direction from the left to right before turn 11.
00:43:26Car stop, turn 11, car stop, turn 11.
00:43:30Partially blocking the track, partially blocking the track.
00:43:33Safety can't just move out onto the circuit.
00:43:35And the shot there on screen of the race director, Tim Schenken, former Formula One pilot,
00:43:40international sports car driver.
00:43:42And to his left, it was our driving standards observer, Jason Bargwiner.
00:43:46And look at that!
00:43:47My goodness!
00:43:48So I think that was Mostert.
00:43:50Yep.
00:43:50Mostert having a battle there with Wall, and when it gets that wheeling through those
00:43:56last three corners and you make that level of contact, there's no recovery.
00:43:59Check out the replay again.
00:44:00We'll have a look at this.
00:44:01David Wall's OK, which is great news.
00:44:04So I think Chas actually launched off the kerb, and the fact that it vaulted over the
00:44:08top of the kerb gave him the hip and shoulder into David Wall's car, and that's heavily damaged.
00:44:13That's going to be a big challenge to get that car square for the weekend.
00:44:16Well, that's why we made the comment before, when McLaughlin and Holdsworth did the same
00:44:21thing.
00:44:21They did an unbelievably good job to get around there together.
00:44:24This is a replay.
00:44:24Have a listen.
00:44:33It's a serious thud when you make the concrete wall there.
00:44:37Dick Johnson.
00:44:39That's going to be costly.
00:44:40A lot of work for those guys this afternoon and into the evening.
00:44:44Petter's safety car is on the circuit.
00:44:45We'll take a quick break and be back.
00:44:53It's the ITM 500 Auckland, and that's the replay of the start, and we measure zero to
00:44:58100 kilometres an hour for V8 supercar starts, and I reckon that one was an absolute cracker
00:45:02for Jamie Winkup.
00:45:03Very little in the way.
00:45:04A wheel spin.
00:45:05Grab second gear cleanly, and look at the margin that he's got over Jason Bright.
00:45:09The run to turn one.
00:45:12This was the wild bit.
00:45:13Down here, Tander ended up three wide as they turned into turn one.
00:45:18There's Tander, and he got away with it.
00:45:21And did a very good job in those opening couple of laps.
00:45:23Qualified 16th.
00:45:24Came out the back end of it in 10th.
00:45:27And this hip and shoulder between Holdsworth and McLaughlin we thought could end in tears,
00:45:32but it was a very similar carbon copy incident later on that in fact did.
00:45:35So here's Lowndes running wide also at the top of the hill, and that allowed Shane Van
00:45:39Gisberger to get through.
00:45:40You cannot afford to be on the grass out there today.
00:45:43It's going to burn you big time.
00:45:44There's no grip.
00:45:45And how about this?
00:45:46Mostat launches off the inside kerb at turn 10, and it launches David Wall into the concrete
00:45:51wall.
00:45:52Massive damage on the left front and left rear of that car.
00:45:56What a shame after coming off the back.
00:45:57A career best performance for him at Winton Rihanna.
00:46:00Yeah, Dick Johnson, we've just seen a couple of replays now of the incident with David Wall.
00:46:05There's a lot of damage to the number 17.
00:46:08I suppose we'll have to ascertain that once we get the car back here, but certainly, you
00:46:12know, I thought this game was about giving people racing room, but obviously, you know,
00:46:16when some of the guys up the front can do it, but when you get down the back, it's a bit
00:46:20hard, so.
00:46:21But obviously, we'll get the thing going and be out there again tomorrow.
00:46:25We look forward to it.
00:46:26Cheers.
00:46:27Dick Johnson.
00:46:28So, damage there to David Wall's car.
00:46:30It was position five in the Saturday race, safe for him at Winton.
00:46:33They're getting it back on the flatbed truck.
00:46:35We'll take a quick break from Pukekohe and be back with more of the ITM 500 Auckland race
00:46:40number 10 in just a moment.
00:46:48Still queued up behind the Peders safety car at the moment as they clear that damaged car
00:46:53from turn 11.
00:46:54It's the Peders Chrysler safety car with Jamie Winkup in behind and Jason Brighton.
00:47:01Here's the reason why at turn 10, Chas Mostert launches off the inside curb.
00:47:06That bumps him into David Wall.
00:47:08Very hard to control a car that's leaping around there.
00:47:11David, fortunately, out of the car and all okay.
00:47:14They're going to have to do a huge amount of work to that car to be able to get it out again
00:47:20for the balance of this weekend.
00:47:21The other challenge that we're going to have here at the moment, Scafie, as we look at the
00:47:24viewer vote question, which of the Kiwis will dominate this weekend?
00:47:28Scotty McLaughlin's still looking pretty good, but he's got a big job there at the moment.
00:47:31He's down in 11th after qualifying pretty well.
00:47:33The issue will be here at the moment trying to keep temperature in tyres because, remember,
00:47:39they only got a couple of racing laps away.
00:47:41They wouldn't have been up to temperature and pressure.
00:47:43Then a safety car comes out and down go all the numbers again.
00:47:47So don't forget, if you'd like to vote, jump online, vhsupercars.com.au.
00:47:50Have you a say as to which of those three Kiwis might get the job done at the moment?
00:47:56Shane Van Gisburgh in his third in this race.
00:47:59Maybe Plotard's down in ninth position, and Scotty McLaughlin is currently in 11th position.
00:48:06Reminder also that there's been a revision to the safety car restart rules as well.
00:48:12We're reverting to the previous procedure from 2013.
00:48:16Single file restart.
00:48:33Lead driver takes the queue once the message goes out.
00:48:38From race control, the safety car's in the lane.
00:48:42And the field goes racing once again.
00:48:44This new section of the racetrack has worked really early.
00:48:48Last year, we saw some tremendous passing in that run into turn five,
00:48:51and we saw great exchanges again even in the early part of this race, Mark.
00:48:55Yeah, well, it's very wide, Neil, and it's got a hard enough braking area from 255km
00:49:00down to roughly 90km to make it an initial pass and then another passing zone afterwards.
00:49:07So let's get ready for the restart.
00:49:08Jamie Winker from Bright.
00:49:10He jumps away.
00:49:11Got a good little leap, but it looks Bright because he got a better apex for the last corner.
00:49:18Yeah, Gisberg and Lowndes, right behind.
00:49:23He's got a good clear margin again.
00:49:25Winkup on the run into turn one.
00:49:27Once again, this mid-pack is pretty tight.
00:49:30Half a second on Jason Bright at the control line then.
00:49:34Jamie Winkup, so already gave himself a handy buffer to be able to manage that gap.
00:49:38Just before the safety car, Bright had actually eased forward on Winkup.
00:49:43So we saw Jason Bright qualify on the front row.
00:49:46Great performance to be pole position.
00:49:49And his pace looked good.
00:49:51Initial start again from Winkup.
00:49:53Impeccable.
00:49:54A little bit of oversteer on the exit there for Shane Van Gisberg on turn five.
00:50:00He's got Lowndes tucked in behind him.
00:50:02Then it's James Courtney.
00:50:03Will Davison's having a very good run here in position number six.
00:50:07Went back to the factory over the Easter period.
00:50:10Spent some time with the team.
00:50:11And basking in the glory of that great performance for Lee Holdsworth.
00:50:14The winner at Winkup is 13th in the field at the moment.
00:50:17It's Winkup, Bright, Van Gisberg, and Lowndes, Courtney.
00:50:20Then Davison, Percat, Winterbottom, Coulthard, and Garth Tander is 10th.
00:50:27Van Gisberg is sneaking out of the airstream for a little bit of a look.
00:50:30We'll see what's going on with Jason Bright.
00:50:33That bump down there, that seam in the road, the joint where there's a patch,
00:50:38really unsettles the car.
00:50:40And already this weekend we've seen trouble down here at turns two and three.
00:50:45Always results in you ending up on the outside of the road of the approach to turn four.
00:50:50Fabian Coulthard, we're riding with him.
00:50:52He's ninth at the moment.
00:50:543.9 seconds away from the lead.
00:50:57Traffic's always the issue.
00:50:58Pretty low heart rate.
00:51:00Yeah.
00:51:00Probably the safety car took a little bit of that out because the initial start was pretty wild
00:51:06and everybody got themselves into a zone of the race where it started to settle a little bit.
00:51:11He's a little bit further back from Mark Winterbottom than I would have expected
00:51:15because Fabian Pace, given it's the same car and a very similar setup to Jason Bright from the BJR,
00:51:24probably should be able to do better than that.
00:51:25So his bounds had a big moment coming up at the straight.
00:51:29Lost that position to Ben Gisberg.
00:51:31Remember, he was third.
00:51:33James Courtney doing a good job in fifth.
00:51:34Will Davison doing a very good job.
00:51:37Again, Mercedes starting to look like it's a contender at various types of circuits.
00:51:43Great result.
00:51:44Obviously at Winton for Lee Holdsworth.
00:51:47This weekend, Will Davison currently in sixth.
00:51:49That shot of the cars from the rear.
00:51:51Looking at the left rear corner of the vehicles, you can get a proper understanding of just
00:51:56why the left rear tyres get so stressed around here.
00:51:58Very high speed through turn one.
00:52:01Go off there at just under 195 odd kilometres an hour.
00:52:06You can literally see Dunlop rubber being left off the road down there.
00:52:09Incidentally, Russell Ingalls done a nice job to make a bit of ground here as well.
00:52:12He qualified 20th.
00:52:14He's up to 16th.
00:52:15But it's Lowndes that's threatening on Van Gisberg at the moment.
00:52:17Just as we saw at Winton several weeks ago.
00:52:20Just looks to me as though Shane's battling a little bit of oversteer in this car.
00:52:23I've seen a couple of shots where the rear end of it dancing around.
00:52:27There's James Moppet.
00:52:29Followed by David Reynolds.
00:52:30And then followed by the enforcer, Russell Ingle, who incidentally was fined post-Winton for
00:52:36his comments in relation to race officials after Saturday.
00:52:40He was fined $15,000, $10,000 of which is suspended until the end of the championship season.
00:52:46So he is, in hard cash, $5,000 lighter.
00:52:49So he's still just a fraction lower in the seat.
00:52:51It's been hard to see over the dash.
00:52:53He's made the odd donation over the years, hasn't he, with that?
00:52:56Sort of owns almost Cam's wing.
00:52:59So there's a post-race investigation to be conducted between cars 6 and 17.
00:53:03So that's Moppet and Wall.
00:53:05Based on the drama we saw at the second-last corner in the contact with the fence.
00:53:12Made a lot of damage on that car.
00:53:13The guys from the DJI will be working long into the night to ensure that works.
00:53:17Oh, rear lock there for Lowndes.
00:53:19Battle to get it stopped.
00:53:20He looks like he's coming towards Van Gisberg.
00:53:23And Van Gisberg missed the apex at the hairpin there by about a metre.
00:53:27The beauty of that corner is that it's got a positive candle on it.
00:53:32So it kind of covers a multitude of sins.
00:53:34So if you do arrive down there, 1 or 2km or 5km too quick,
00:53:38it does at least hold the car in position unless you way overstep it for speed.
00:53:42It's got a little bowl that you can use to your advantage in there.
00:53:45Here's Lowndes, turn 1.
00:53:47That's 190-plus kilometres an hour.
00:53:50Oh, he's gone.
00:53:51He's gone through.
00:53:52He went off the road.
00:53:53So that's the leader.
00:53:54Wink-up has gone off the back of turn 1.
00:53:57No power steering.
00:53:58Ah, so power steer problem for Wink-up.
00:54:00No power steering.
00:54:01So he's just checking whether it's got steering.
00:54:03He's moved it over.
00:54:05David Couch, he said he is sure.
00:54:07I reckon he's sure.
00:54:08He would have got halfway through the corner then.
00:54:10And as Neil said before, with the load and the bumps,
00:54:14that as soon as you lose the power steering,
00:54:16you can't control the car.
00:54:17He's going straight off.
00:54:21He's got his hands full at the moment.
00:54:24Hard to have the radio conversation with James Courtney all over you.
00:54:27What will he do?
00:54:29Does he want to get an assessment or press on?
00:54:31Has a look at the traffic in the mirror.
00:54:32He saw the glimpse.
00:54:33He had a look on the button there at the moment.
00:54:34No, he's in.
00:54:35He's in.
00:54:36So it's a big enough problem.
00:54:37Jamie's done enough of this to know what the story is.
00:54:39So from the lead of the race, he went straight ahead down at two and three.
00:54:43Here's the replay.
00:54:44Here he is at one miles wide, out in the weeds.
00:54:48Lucky to get away with that.
00:54:50And when he came onto the back straight,
00:54:51had lost the lead to Jason Bright,
00:54:53then jumped on the radio and said, power steer.
00:54:56What a shame.
00:54:59So we just saw him when he turned the wheel.
00:55:02He had to get his left hand and drag the wheel down
00:55:05because he actually struggled to get the car into pit lane,
00:55:09given it so tight.
00:55:11I shoot mine, mate.
00:55:12So this is a big championship moment.
00:55:15You're back.
00:55:15You're back.
00:55:16For our champion.
00:55:18And someone that drove so well at the start of this race,
00:55:21his start, his original standing start,
00:55:24was as good as you would ever see.
00:55:26Jumped away.
00:55:27Just listen.
00:55:28That's David Couch.
00:55:28He just said, power steering, mate.
00:55:31What they normally do is they actually have a problem
00:55:36when the force is so high and it's bumpy
00:55:39that it's very easily hurt in this particular instance
00:55:44by the seal that covers most of the pressure
00:55:48in the power steering system.
00:55:50I mean, we've had a lot of power steering problems
00:55:52this year so far.
00:55:53There was a lot going on at wind
00:55:55and also with the increased track grip there,
00:55:57foot-fit load through the steering.
00:55:58So this is another version of that, so it seems.
00:56:02So Jamie Wincup in the pit lane at the moment,
00:56:05and that's a disaster.
00:56:06He came into the event fifth in the championship
00:56:09and talked about this kind of up-and-down scenario
00:56:12of this story so far this season.
00:56:14He's had pole positions.
00:56:15He's had race wins.
00:56:16But the consistency that he knows that he needs is not there.
00:56:19Meantime, Coulthard, for example, in this camp
00:56:21on the right-hand side of screen, he's been very consistent.
00:56:25It's been a much tougher task for Jason Bright.
00:56:28Consistency for him has been a problem.
00:56:30And remember that that was a big drama for these guys
00:56:33and in particular for the wallet of Brad Jones in Adelaide
00:56:35when he was involved in that role over there
00:56:37and they had to commission a new car.
00:56:40So Garth Tander has been the real winner of this.
00:56:43He's from 16th to 9th.
00:56:45But Roplin's been the loser.
00:56:47He was previously 11th,
00:56:48and obviously now the Wincup is in his 10th,
00:56:51so he was 7th.
00:56:52So far this year, Nick Burkhan.
00:56:56Best result for him has been three 15th positions.
00:57:00And a little reminder here,
00:57:01he currently sits in position number 6,
00:57:03a car number triple 2.
00:57:06Heavy haulage Australia holding Commodore.
00:57:07So this is a very strong run for him.
00:57:09There's Kouktar.
00:57:11Fabian's 8th at the moment.
00:57:12He's just a little bit away from the back of Mark Winterbottom.
00:57:16Winterbottom's recovered pretty well
00:57:17when you consider how close he was to disaster in qualifying.
00:57:21Oh, and off the road also,
00:57:23Dale Wood, car 21,
00:57:24and the rim protruding there on that car,
00:57:27so it's plucked a tyre off on the curb.
00:57:28Let's see if you can bring it in.
00:57:30There's an issue.
00:57:31There's something right in the rear end.
00:57:32So we...
00:57:33It's the black rubber donut on the back wheel of...
00:57:38of Dale's car,
00:57:40and at the end of all that,
00:57:42you say...
00:57:43about that tyre problem.
00:57:45We had a lot of the tyre problems last year, Neil, didn't we?
00:57:47This is the hard compound tyre they're using this weekend,
00:57:49and it's obviously popped the tyre before the corner there.
00:57:54Marco?
00:57:55I don't usually like doing this,
00:57:57but they put the car, as you can see,
00:57:58up on the second lot of stands,
00:58:00which says to me it's pretty serious.
00:58:01Jamie, we know you can't drive these cars
00:58:03without power steering.
00:58:04Obviously, you've lost it.
00:58:05Yeah, quite lucky, actually,
00:58:07to have it at Turn 1.
00:58:09If it was around the back here,
00:58:10it would have been a big trouble,
00:58:11but, yeah, as soon as it went,
00:58:13bang, just straight in the wheel.
00:58:14Had to be Hulk Hogan to turn the thing.
00:58:17I know you're fit, mate,
00:58:17but I do know how hard these cars are to drive,
00:58:19and just underneath, there's no oil leak,
00:58:21so you'd suggest it's probably an internal rack or pump situation.
00:58:25The boys are in under there
00:58:26and not clear at the moment exactly what the drama is.
00:58:30So, win cup so far this year,
00:58:31four pole positions and three race wins.
00:58:33We're focusing on this battle
00:58:35between Perkat and Winterbottom at the moment,
00:58:38sixth and seventh.
00:58:40Coats High leaderboards suggest
00:58:42that Jason Bryce just cruising at the moment.
00:58:45He's got a 1.1 second margin
00:58:47over Shane Van Gisberg,
00:58:48and then Craig Lowndes is in third.
00:58:49Quick break, and we're back in a moment.
00:58:51Scott McLaughlin is attacking Garth Tander.
00:59:00This is the battle for ninth and tenth,
00:59:01and a quick reminder that it'll be jam-packed
00:59:03at the G this afternoon, the MCG.
00:59:05It doesn't get any bigger for AFL fans.
00:59:07Collingwood versus Essendon.
00:59:09The Woods versus the Bullers,
00:59:11and that's coming up 12.30 Eastern on seven.
00:59:13But how about this battle at the moment, Scopey?
00:59:16McLaughlin having a look on Tander
00:59:17as they make the run to one.
00:59:18He's had better pace for the last three or four laps.
00:59:22You see that there, although they're not big margins
00:59:24because he's been pretty much helmed up by Garth.
00:59:27But he's got to get a run, Neil,
00:59:28because Tim Slade is looming onto the back
00:59:32of Scott McLaughlin's car also.
00:59:34So he's got to get this move done.
00:59:37He's been bumping the back.
00:59:38We're on board now with Tim.
00:59:40He's been bumping the back of Garth Tander's car.
00:59:43And this might be enough.
00:59:45Not quite.
00:59:47Got to get a good run under the left-hander.
00:59:48So he's done that.
00:59:49He's used more road on the right part
00:59:51so that he's got a better exit.
00:59:53He's in a better spot this time.
00:59:55We'll go and do the crisscross.
00:59:56Down the inside.
00:59:57This look...
00:59:58Good job.
00:59:59Well done.
01:00:00Positioned himself well.
01:00:02And well thought out.
01:00:03It's not over yet
01:00:04because Garth's going to fight back.
01:00:05They'll be alongside each other.
01:00:07And Garth gets away with it.
01:00:08Around the outside.
01:00:09Very fast section of road.
01:00:12That was a little lesson, wasn't it?
01:00:14Nice, clean, square drive off the corner
01:00:17for Garth Tander.
01:00:19He sat the car on this rear haunch
01:00:20as nicely as Winkup rejoins.
01:00:23And then he rounded McLaughlin back up at turn 10.
01:00:27And he's got a margin again.
01:00:29So this will be a little test session now
01:00:31for Jamie Winkup.
01:00:32Might be able to drag some points out of this.
01:00:34Every single one of them counts, as we know,
01:00:36when we get to Sydney Olympic Park
01:00:37at the end of the year.
01:00:38Here he is again in replay.
01:00:40Classic under over.
01:00:42So in order to get in there,
01:00:43Scott had to drive in deep and hard under brakes.
01:00:45So the car understeers,
01:00:46forces him a bit wide.
01:00:48Tander recognised that.
01:00:49Turned it down tight.
01:00:50Squared it off.
01:00:51Got very good drive off the corner
01:00:52and was able to accelerate round.
01:00:54Oh, and straight ahead, Tim Slade.
01:00:57So off the back at turn five,
01:00:58Slade makes a big mistake.
01:00:59And he was in the mix here.
01:01:00That's costly.
01:01:02That is costly.
01:01:04Have to give that spot away
01:01:05as often we see the guys rejoin
01:01:07after leaving the road.
01:01:10And he hasn't given it away
01:01:11because he's still going to arrive
01:01:13on the inside of Moffat.
01:01:15Yes, he has now.
01:01:16Just ease the throttle off
01:01:17and let James come across the front.
01:01:19So Bright from Van Gisburgh
01:01:23and Lounge, Courtney Davison,
01:01:24Hurkett, Winnebottom, Cawthard, Tander.
01:01:27That's the battle that we've just been watching.
01:01:30And McLaughlin is right back in behind Garth Tander,
01:01:33not easing the pressure at all.
01:01:36Garth's on the ragged edge.
01:01:37You can see the behaviour of the car
01:01:39through turn one.
01:01:40He was busy.
01:01:41Tim Slade complaining that he can't hear
01:01:43on the radio properly at the moment either.
01:01:46He's talking to Terry Kerr.
01:01:47Now have a look at Scott McLaughlin
01:01:51as he wanders to the inside again
01:01:52for a look on Garth Tander.
01:01:55Garth gives him a bit of space.
01:01:56He'll want to try and stay up high though.
01:01:58Oh, and straight ahead goes McLaughlin.
01:02:02Where does he pop out
01:02:03and how does he regress this?
01:02:05Should pop out behind Garth,
01:02:06so give the spot away.
01:02:10He's not thinking.
01:02:11Oh, Garth.
01:02:13Bright meantime is just balding.
01:02:14He's got a two-second lead.
01:02:15Very nice job.
01:02:17Good job, mate.
01:02:19Richard Holloway confirming.
01:02:21He's got McLaughlin.
01:02:22It was a good decision.
01:02:24I think Garth actually saw that one coming.
01:02:28So they resume this battle again.
01:02:30On it goes.
01:02:30Here's the replay.
01:02:32So McLaughlin got the rears locked.
01:02:34Cannot stop it.
01:02:35And makes the wise decision
01:02:38to release the brake pedal
01:02:39and just steer that car straight.
01:02:41Pressed on with that.
01:02:42You have a chance to rotate it
01:02:43or put a flat spot on the tyre
01:02:44if you stayed with a big brake pedal pressure.
01:02:48Off and right in behind there now too.
01:02:49So he's the first of the Nissan Altimas in 11th.
01:02:53The first of the Mercedes E63 AMG Benz.
01:03:00Will Davison in 5th.
01:03:02McLaughlin in 10th of the Volvo S60.
01:03:04I reckon you saw a good example
01:03:06of why Scotty McLaughlin's going to be around
01:03:07and part of our furniture for a long time to come.
01:03:09That was really good maturity
01:03:10to know the rule,
01:03:11to tuck back in behind there.
01:03:12I don't agree with it, frankly,
01:03:13because I don't think you should be able
01:03:14to make a mistake
01:03:15and just end up back in there for another crack.
01:03:17But what's funny on the pit lane here
01:03:18is I can see the big screen there.
01:03:20All the crowd can see it
01:03:21and they cheer when Scotty goes past
01:03:22and when Tandy goes back past again
01:03:24there's just dead silence.
01:03:25I reckon they'll all grab a bite of their hot dog.
01:03:28It's just nothing.
01:03:31So they're at it again now
01:03:33in this final corner
01:03:33thanks to our code terminal in
01:03:35and a lot of wheel work required
01:03:36for McLaughlin there
01:03:37to recover that car
01:03:38dancing over the top of the bumps.
01:03:41These fellas are arguing
01:03:42over 9th and 10th at the moment.
01:03:43Bright's got 1.7 seconds
01:03:45over Shane Van Gisberger.
01:03:47Now I know there's never
01:03:48a good news story
01:03:49for the guy who leads the race
01:03:51who goes out.
01:03:52So we've come today
01:03:53leading the race
01:03:54now back in 24th position.
01:03:57Never a good news story.
01:03:58However,
01:03:58the only good part of that
01:03:59is that today's race
01:04:00is only worth 50 points.
01:04:02So in terms of what you lose
01:04:04it doesn't have the effect
01:04:05of what it would be.
01:04:06For instance on Sunday
01:04:07when there's 150 points up for offer.
01:04:09And there's only one practice session
01:04:12and one very intense qualifying session
01:04:14leading into this race.
01:04:15So a little bit of it's learned
01:04:16on the run here at the moment.
01:04:18One of the reasons why
01:04:19apart from just grabbing
01:04:20some valuable points for Winkup
01:04:22that they need to get him
01:04:22back out there
01:04:23is every single kilometre
01:04:26at the moment
01:04:26you're logging knowledge
01:04:27about what's required
01:04:28for the races to come.
01:04:29Another couple of 100 kilometre races
01:04:31tomorrow
01:04:32and then 200 k's on Sunday.
01:04:34There are the margins for you.
01:04:36Bright to Van Gisberger
01:04:36at 1.7 seconds
01:04:38and then trailing back
01:04:39to Pintard here.
01:04:40He was on the radio
01:04:40and animated
01:04:41two or three minutes ago
01:04:43unhappy about something
01:04:44didn't catch what it was
01:04:45he's eight.
01:04:47And they're just suggesting to him
01:04:48bring it home
01:04:49don't stress
01:04:50just get those points.
01:04:52And here is Winkup
01:04:5324th as you said before Mark.
01:04:56Neil and I think
01:04:56a similar circumstance
01:04:57will apply here.
01:04:58They're not entirely sure
01:04:59exactly what's wrong
01:05:00with James.
01:05:01As we said
01:05:02there was no obviously
01:05:02no hydraulic oil loss
01:05:04maybe an internal seal
01:05:06or something
01:05:06so they've shipped him out
01:05:07because just as you said
01:05:08at the other end of the year
01:05:10it's a couple of points
01:05:10grab now
01:05:11may turn out to be
01:05:11very critical
01:05:12to get back to this battle.
01:05:14It looks pretty good.
01:05:15Garth had it barely able
01:05:16to stop down there
01:05:17in that right hander
01:05:18and fight.
01:05:19He also had the rear
01:05:20of the car
01:05:20skipping around
01:05:21on that bump
01:05:21just where the patch
01:05:23is down there
01:05:24and McLaughlin's
01:05:25going to have a look
01:05:25up the inside
01:05:26Moffat wants to go
01:05:27with him.
01:05:28Garth tried to cover
01:05:29in vain
01:05:29little tap
01:05:30from James Moffat.
01:05:31That was great racing
01:05:35just a little mistake
01:05:37from Tanda
01:05:38and Scott was able
01:05:40to capitalise
01:05:42but it looked like
01:05:42Moffat was going
01:05:43to get it back
01:05:43up the inside
01:05:44they're almost
01:05:45three abreast
01:05:45as they come out
01:05:46of the hairpin.
01:05:48Tanda's been complaining
01:05:49about brake balance
01:05:50for a big chunk
01:05:51of the season
01:05:52so far
01:05:52he just hasn't been happy
01:05:53and we saw
01:05:54that visual evidence
01:05:55of it there before
01:05:56with the rear
01:05:57of the car
01:05:57being unsettled
01:05:59and I don't know
01:05:59whether it's
01:06:00actually a brake thing
01:06:01so much as a
01:06:02ride control problem
01:06:03but it definitely
01:06:04got upset
01:06:04on that bump
01:06:05down there
01:06:05skipped the rear
01:06:06of the car sideways
01:06:07and now
01:06:08McLaughlin's got
01:06:09the release
01:06:10that he's been
01:06:10looking for
01:06:11his ninth
01:06:11there he is
01:06:12on board.
01:06:14Yelled about
01:06:15Lowndes before
01:06:16because Courtney's
01:06:16taken ground
01:06:17off him
01:06:17so that group
01:06:18from three
01:06:19through to
01:06:21basically
01:06:22Mark
01:06:22Winterbottom
01:06:23and seven
01:06:23has bunched
01:06:24right up
01:06:25there's only
01:06:25tenths of a second
01:06:27between that
01:06:28group also
01:06:28so there's a
01:06:29battle in front
01:06:30of this guy
01:06:30these guys
01:06:31with now
01:06:32McLaughlin
01:06:33in front of
01:06:33Tander
01:06:34who's worked
01:06:34basically
01:06:34the whole race
01:06:35to get back
01:06:36by
01:06:36remember
01:06:36he started
01:06:37seventh
01:06:37Garth Tander
01:06:39started
01:06:39sixteenth
01:06:40so he's done
01:06:41a great job
01:06:41in the early
01:06:42phase
01:06:42Moffett
01:06:43hey we shouldn't
01:06:47miss this opportunity
01:06:48just look at Nick
01:06:49Perkett in the
01:06:49blue car there
01:06:50the HHA
01:06:50Commodore
01:06:51in sixth spot
01:06:51I think he's
01:06:52at the minute
01:06:52there
01:06:52big rap for him
01:06:54I mean
01:06:54it's been a little
01:06:55bit tough for him
01:06:56the kids are
01:06:57quick though
01:06:57he always has
01:06:57been
01:06:58career of cup
01:06:58cars back in
01:06:59Formula Ford
01:07:00and that's the
01:07:00hard bit
01:07:01and these cars
01:07:01are hard to
01:07:02drive
01:07:02he's had a
01:07:03little bit of
01:07:03a drama
01:07:04during the
01:07:04course of
01:07:04the year
01:07:05and he gets
01:07:06involved in
01:07:06a little bit
01:07:07of a mess
01:07:07up now and
01:07:08then and I
01:07:08think that's
01:07:08part of his
01:07:09aggressive nature
01:07:09which sometimes
01:07:10is a very good
01:07:11thing but I
01:07:11just get a sense
01:07:12that you know
01:07:13eventually he's
01:07:14going to break
01:07:14through and he's
01:07:15really going to
01:07:15become part of
01:07:16the game so
01:07:16well done
01:07:17and I reckon
01:07:18we should take
01:07:18this moment
01:07:18just have a look
01:07:19at him doing
01:07:19a good job
01:07:20he's had a
01:07:21bit of experience
01:07:21around here in
01:07:22the New Zealand
01:07:22Super Tours as
01:07:23well and that's
01:07:24handy even though
01:07:25this is his V8
01:07:26supercar championship
01:07:27degree just having
01:07:28a little bit of
01:07:29acclimatisation to
01:07:30this racetrack is
01:07:31helpful for sure
01:07:32former Formula
01:07:33Ford champion he
01:07:34was the Bathurst
01:07:35winner with Garth
01:07:35Handler back in
01:07:372011 you're right
01:07:39Larko he's kind of
01:07:40got himself in one
01:07:40or two battles in
01:07:41the early part of
01:07:42the championship
01:07:42but he didn't need
01:07:43to he was in a
01:07:44great position at
01:07:45one point at
01:07:45Puxel if you
01:07:46recall and ended
01:07:46up firing down the
01:07:47road there but no
01:07:49question about the
01:07:50speed it's just a
01:07:51case of trying to
01:07:51put together the
01:07:52consistency if he
01:07:53can do what he's
01:07:54doing out there at
01:07:55the moment keep it
01:07:55stitched together
01:07:56even if he ends up
01:07:57quite frankly having
01:07:58to cede that
01:07:59position to Mark
01:08:00Winterbottom great
01:08:01result anytime when
01:08:02you're a young bloke
01:08:03and you can be in
01:08:03the top ten and
01:08:04you're still feeling
01:08:05your way in this
01:08:06caper and he's
01:08:06easily going to be
01:08:07able to achieve that
01:08:08today so that's
01:08:09that little grip
01:08:10that I made
01:08:10reference of before
01:08:11Nick's doing a
01:08:12very good job that
01:08:12looks like it's got
01:08:13a bit too much
01:08:13oversteer now so the
01:08:14rear tyre going
01:08:16away and Mark
01:08:17Winterbottom who
01:08:18keeps on forging
01:08:19further forward
01:08:21this is the battle
01:08:22for sixth and
01:08:23seventh
01:08:23Winterbottom using
01:08:26a lot of curve
01:08:26there gets through
01:08:27there very nicely
01:08:28makes the exit
01:08:29straighter
01:08:30he'll be in
01:08:30contention to dive
01:08:32down the inside
01:08:33of the hairpin
01:08:34Nick moves it
01:08:36across a little bit
01:08:36just fakes to the
01:08:37right
01:08:38the exit again
01:08:41we're on board
01:08:41with Mark
01:08:42Winterbottom just
01:08:42have a look through
01:08:43here this is
01:08:43unbelievably fast
01:08:45we'll stay with
01:08:48this for this lap
01:08:49check this out
01:08:50interesting
01:08:52time for
01:08:56unidary
01:08:58time for
01:09:00new
01:09:01in
01:09:02we're going to be
01:09:03home
01:09:03there's a lot of
01:09:03events
01:09:04we're going to be
01:09:04happening
01:09:04because this is
01:09:05very important
01:09:05because it's
01:09:06only two
01:09:06will be
01:09:07in
01:09:07one
01:09:08in
01:09:09in
01:09:10the
01:09:10time for
01:09:11Oh, my God.
01:09:41How wild is that? Great vision.
01:09:57See the body language of Nick Perkatt's car.
01:09:59A lot of oversteer.
01:10:00You can just see again on the exit of the final corner.
01:10:03A lot of late oversteer, lack of rear grip.
01:10:06This is Mostert.
01:10:07David Wall and the Wilson Security Falcon are both back in the garage.
01:10:12David is okay, which is the good thing.
01:10:14The car certainly isn't.
01:10:16Dick Johnson has just said the car will be out for the weekend.
01:10:20The front of the cage is bent.
01:10:21The engine mount is broken.
01:10:23The brake discs have been completely sawn in half
01:10:26and there's plenty of suspension damage
01:10:28and that's just what's at the front of the car.
01:10:30So I'm fortunate for David Wall.
01:10:32He's out for the rest of the weekend.
01:10:37Oh, I'm here for Lowndes out of position three.
01:10:41He ran on at turn five.
01:10:43There's only five to go or so.
01:10:46So there's no need to get some points.
01:10:48Jeremy Moore just reminding him of his obligation
01:10:50to just try and keep it straight.
01:10:52Grab some points.
01:10:54Good confirmation back from Craig.
01:10:56Here's what happened.
01:10:57It's the same thing.
01:10:58They've all got the same thing going on down there.
01:10:59They're struggling to pull the cars up,
01:11:01lock the rear brakes for Lowndes.
01:11:02He actually had it locked before he got to the join in the road
01:11:05and went straight ahead.
01:11:08So I think he's held his spot there all okay.
01:11:10Bright, Van Gisburgh, and Lowndes, Courtney, Will Davison,
01:11:15Nick Perkatt, Mark Winterbottom, Fabian Coulthard,
01:11:17Scotty McLaughlin, and Garth Tander.
01:11:22Those fellas are...
01:11:23Tander is 16 seconds away from the lead of the race at the moment.
01:11:29But as I said earlier in the broadcast,
01:11:30it's a pretty decent recovery from qualifying for 16.
01:11:33This battle is raging at the moment.
01:11:36Mark Winterbottom still just stalking Nick Perkatt,
01:11:40trying to figure a way around
01:11:43or at least distract or upset Perkatt into a little mistake.
01:11:47And it's a great run also for Will Davison.
01:11:49So Erebus clearly made ground with these cars in the recent past.
01:11:53Been a nice job for them.
01:11:55Win at Winton.
01:11:57Nice and quick at the moment.
01:11:58And Holtzworth, by the way, is down in 13th position at the moment
01:12:01in his sister car.
01:12:02Neil and Mark Winterbottom's teammate, Chas Mostert,
01:12:04running around there towards the rear of the field there.
01:12:07You might be wondering why.
01:12:08Remember, he hasn't been here.
01:12:09He didn't start until later in the year last year.
01:12:11And the other thing he said to me just before this race,
01:12:14he's actually not confident in the car.
01:12:15And it's a really important thing on a high-speed, bumpy circuit like this.
01:12:19You've got to be confident.
01:12:20And as an engineer, you've got to listen to that and think,
01:12:22well, maybe I can do a couple of things to his car.
01:12:24They won't make it faster, but they'll make him more confident in the car.
01:12:28If you're confident as a driver, by default, you are faster.
01:12:33Yeah, that's very true, Larkon,
01:12:34especially as you sit in a big, fast, open circuit like this.
01:12:37Those corners coming onto and off the straight
01:12:40are two of the most committed corners on our tour.
01:12:45And they're bumpy and they're wild.
01:12:47There's long areas of the corner where you've got the car basically on the slide.
01:12:53And very easy to make a mistake.
01:12:56If you're not confident with the car,
01:12:57then you don't get the best from yourself or the car.
01:13:02With that earlier safety car intervention also, Martin,
01:13:06there's a possibility because of the time certainty involved.
01:13:08And there's a problem here for Winterbottom down at the hairpin.
01:13:12So it's ended up not being a case of pressuring Perkett into a mistake.
01:13:18Winterbottom's made a mistake or so it seems down there.
01:13:21He's dropped in now behind Lee Holdsworth.
01:13:24So there is a 13.
01:13:29So what happened here?
01:13:31He's bumped the grass.
01:13:32The left-hand rear wheel caught on the grass.
01:13:35Here's the replay.
01:13:37Okay, he just couldn't stop it.
01:13:39And it's wet out there.
01:13:40Absolutely no grip.
01:13:41Simple mistake.
01:13:42Just as he grabbed first, then he had to rotate it in the other direction.
01:13:45He tried to go the other way.
01:13:49So I was about to make the point that we think this is likely a time-certain race
01:13:52because of the safety car intervention earlier.
01:13:55So it may not run the full distance of the 35 gazetted laps.
01:13:59So Coulthard gets a reprieve as a result of that.
01:14:05So he moves up to seventh.
01:14:07McLaughlin gets an eighth going here.
01:14:09And it's 1.6 seconds between Bright and Shane Van Gisbergen.
01:14:13The last time that Jason Bright won a race was right here last year.
01:14:20This time last year.
01:14:21Sunday afternoon.
01:14:23It's taken him 12 months to be able to put this one together.
01:14:26He's threatened with great pace again this year.
01:14:29But it's been a very topsy-turvy campaign so far.
01:14:32He's down the order in the points.
01:14:34He's 12th at the moment.
01:14:35It just looks like the margin's hanging tight between Bright and Van Gisbergen.
01:14:43It's just tightening up ever so slightly.
01:14:46And this may well be the last lap.
01:14:49So Bright can afford to just be a little casual.
01:14:54It's a great performance.
01:14:59455th race.
01:15:01The V8 Supercar Racing for Jason Bright.
01:15:03And dovetails beautifully off the back of his emotional and stunning performance here in 2013
01:15:10to win the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
01:15:12He's taking big steps towards doing it again in 2014 through Turn 11 for the final time.
01:15:25Jason Bright in conversation there with Andrew Edwards.
01:15:29It was a perfect job.
01:15:311.6 seconds, the gap in the end.
01:15:33There he is, Andrew.
01:15:37And congratulations to everybody at Team VOC.
01:15:44Beautiful drive, Jason.
01:15:45Shane Van Gisbergen second.
01:15:47The first of the Kiwis.
01:15:48Then Craig Lowndes.
01:15:51Car not quick enough, but finishing in third place.
01:15:54Very important points for him.
01:15:55Remember, came into the event here as championship leader with a margin of 28 points.
01:16:01And James Courtney in fourth.
01:16:02Will Davison fifth.
01:16:04V8 Supercar.
01:16:07Season best performance for Nick Perk at sixth.
01:16:09I was going to say career best, but we're going to remind ourselves he was a Bathurst winner with Garth Tander.
01:16:14Then Fabian Coulthard, Scotty McLaughlin eighth.
01:16:17Garth Tander, who I just mentioned, in ninth position.
01:16:19And James Moffat.
01:16:20Good drive for James there.
01:16:22The best of the Nissans in position 10, car number 360.
01:16:26So, all five manufacturers in the top ten.
01:16:35Sorry about that.
01:16:36It's not because Winterbottom's popped out.
01:16:37So, Winterbottom, whilst he was in the top ten, they were all five.
01:16:41Winterbottom is the highest place for who was fighting for seventh position right behind Perk at.
01:16:48Made that little mistake.
01:16:49Gone back to 13th.
01:16:50That was a little bit of a cruel finish for him because he worked his way back up the field very well.
01:16:55But Jason Bright today has put on a clinic.
01:16:59He drove perfectly in those early laps.
01:17:02Didn't make a mistake.
01:17:03Made ground on Winkup.
01:17:04Remember, he was leading and since then was able to dominate the way this race was run.
01:17:12Incidentally, Rick Kelly ended up making it up as far as 20th.
01:17:16He's been debriefing on the radio about the changes they want to make.
01:17:19But right now, the focus is on Jason Bright.
01:17:22What a beautiful drive for him.
01:17:25Made up nine positions in the championship at Winton.
01:17:32A bit of aggravation with his teammate there as well, Dale Wood.
01:17:36So, had to resolve midweek after the event.
01:17:40But that's all forgotten.
01:17:41Now, that was a great drive.
01:17:42Controlled, intelligent play.
01:17:45He was just able to effectively cruise around and at the end it was 1.6 seconds.
01:17:52Jason Bright to Shane Van Gisbergen.
01:18:02So, Bright, Van Gisbergen, Lowndes.
01:18:04That's your podium.
01:18:05James Courtney, fourth.
01:18:07Then Will Davison, Nick Perkatt, Fabian Coulthard, Scotty McLaughlin, Garth Tander, James Moffat.
01:18:12That's your top ten.
01:18:13And Rihanna is with Jason.
01:18:16Congratulations, Jason Bright.
01:18:18Pole position.
01:18:18There's your hat pole position.
01:18:20And a win to start the weekend to defend your Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
01:18:24Yeah, that was a pretty good win.
01:18:26You know, we had a pretty tough start to the year.
01:18:29And, you know, we really wanted to come back and win this one.
01:18:31So, you know, that is a good start to the weekend.
01:18:33You know, pole was great this morning.
01:18:34But going home and leading the points tonight is pretty special.
01:18:37And, of course, it is Anzac Day today.
01:18:38So, you're the first Viet Supercar driver to win on Anzac Day.
01:18:41Yeah, mate.
01:18:41We're remembering a lot of people today.
01:18:43Both JR and all of our Anzacs.
01:18:46So, yeah, it was a pretty special day to win.
01:18:47I said at the start of the day that, you know, this is a day that I'd like to win.
01:18:50It's a pretty special day.
01:18:51So, yeah, very happy.
01:18:52Very happy for all the guys in the team and Team BOC.
01:18:55We have an Australian on the podium.
01:18:56We definitely needed someone from New Zealand to represent the home crowd.
01:19:00Congratulations, Shane Van Gisbergen.
01:19:01Yeah, thanks.
01:19:02That was an awesome race.
01:19:03Thanks for everyone coming out today.
01:19:04It's been awesome to see you here.
01:19:05And all the Kiwi support, really appreciate it.
01:19:09But, yeah, Bryony was just driving so good then.
01:19:11His car was awesome as well.
01:19:12And I just couldn't match him.
01:19:14But, fortunately for Jamie, he had a problem.
01:19:16But we'll take P2 and build on it for the rest of the week.
01:19:18Thanks again.
01:19:19The momentum for you really is building.
01:19:21You had a really good outing at Winton last time out for V8 Supercars.
01:19:24And, of course, the podium here is starting to happen.
01:19:27Yeah, I've just got to get a win here.
01:19:28That would be awesome.
01:19:29But the car's fast enough.
01:19:30We just have to qualify well and lead from the front.
01:19:32But I'm sure we can do it tomorrow or Sunday.
01:19:34We'll just see.
01:19:35And congratulations.
01:19:36Craig Lowndes, third on the podium.
01:19:38Not quite the speed of the guys at the front, but got the job done anyway.
01:19:41Yeah, thanks, Rianna.
01:19:42It was.
01:19:43It was, you know, I had a couple of moments down into Turn 5.
01:19:45But, you know, thankfully we had enough of a gap.
01:19:48You know, it was.
01:19:48It was obviously a great race to watch.
01:19:50But, you know, these guys, these two guys beside me were obviously a league of their own today.
01:19:53And, look, credit to them.
01:19:54Great job for Bridie and, of course, for Shane.
01:19:56But we'll fight tomorrow and we'll see what we can bring on.
01:19:59Four races this weekend.
01:20:00Critical points in the championship.
01:20:02That lead at the top is very small.
01:20:04Well, it is.
01:20:05And I think today's race was all about 50 points.
01:20:06Tomorrow is obviously 250, 100 points total.
01:20:09And then, of course, 150 on the Sunday.
01:20:11So, yeah, just trying to edge away.
01:20:13But, of course, very difficult.
01:20:14But it's, you know, it's one of those things you've got to survive and see what we can bring.
01:20:18But hello to Levi and Chile if I don't get a chance tomorrow.
01:20:20It is a 49-point lead in the championship that you have at the moment.
01:20:24We're still early in the season, but we talk about this championship already.
01:20:27It already is on.
01:20:28Oh, look, there's no doubt about that.
01:20:29And I think that, you know, we struggle at Winton.
01:20:32You know, we've got a reasonable car at the moment.
01:20:33We need to make it better to match these guys.
01:20:35But, of course, we're surviving.
01:20:37We're scoring points.
01:20:38We're beating our competition at the moment.
01:20:39But you can't do that.
01:20:41You need to win races.
01:20:42You need to be up the front.
01:20:42And, of course, as I said, Red Bull guys will, you know, look at the car tonight and get the car right for tomorrow
01:20:47and see what we can bring on.
01:20:49But, thankfully, we've stretched the lead.
01:20:51Enjoy the podium.
01:20:52Congratulations.
01:20:54Very important for Craig Lowndes to yield an outcome from these races.
01:20:58When you can't win them, but you can still finish on the podium.
01:21:01Very important points there.
01:21:02There's the unofficial confirmation of the results.
01:21:04Jason Bright, just a little under 1.7 seconds from Shane Van Gisbergen, Craig Lowndes, Courtney Davis and Perkatt.
01:21:10That's a terrific performance for him.
01:21:12Coulthard, McLaughlin, Tander and James Moffat, the first of the Nissans in the field.
01:21:17Looking further afield there.
01:21:19Russell Ingle continued that climb up to 15th position.
01:21:22Rick Kelly made a little bit of ground.
01:21:24But, boy, when you're back in that traffic, it's so hard to recover.
01:21:26First win for 2014 for Jason Bright.
01:21:30For Shane Van Gisbergen, it was his second, second placing of 2014.
01:21:36And, as I said before, for Craig Lowndes, it's all about this consistency at the moment.
01:21:40Wow.
01:21:40We've got a big day coming up tomorrow.
01:21:42We're going to see these three Kiwis who were red hot in 2014 really pushing the Aussies.
01:21:47Wow.
01:21:48We've got two big qualifying runs tomorrow, plus another couple of hundred-kilometre races as well.
01:21:53It's going to be fantastic.
01:21:54And I hope that you can join us on Channel 7 tomorrow for more V8 Supercars.
01:21:59Time for never.
01:22:02Same old story.
01:22:05What if I say you're not like the others?
01:22:07What if I say you're not just another one?
01:22:10Your place, what if I'm...
01:22:13What if I...
