00:00This championship never ceases to amaze me. Already in 2014 we've seen it all.
00:16Rollovers, rivalries, breakthrough wins and the rise of the Kiwis.
00:24What a drive from Fabian Coulthard.
00:26Now, this weekend, you're on our soil. This is our track.
00:31Welcome to Pukekohe Park Raceway. This is the fastest racetrack in New Zealand.
00:36Here, total commitment is barely enough. This place throws everything at you.
00:42This is the place where Aussies should fear to come. A track that truly rewards the brave.
00:48Contact. Red flag, red flag. No one's left. He's going to spin and round goes Courtney.
00:55To win in Australia, that's one thing. To win across the ditch, that's another. I love racing here.
01:02Listen to the crowd. Ray Murphy has done it.
01:05There is nothing like standing on the top step here.
01:09Pukki is our cauldron. This is our track.
01:13And yet again, he brings Pukkohe to its feet.
01:16But it's time for another New Zealand motorsport hero to stand up.
01:20It's time for someone else to dominate. Which one of these Kiwis wants it more?
01:25Will it be Fabian Coulthard? Shane Van Gisbergen? Or will it be Scotty McLaughlin?
01:31The Kiwis will erupt. Look out. There's a new kid in town in the V8 supercars.
01:36His name is Scott McLaughlin.
01:38There's absolutely no doubt the game has changed.
01:42Which one of these Kiwis wants to take my mantle as the king of Pukkohe?
01:47Yes, we're in New Zealand, 40 kilometres south of the beautiful city of Auckland.
01:59And we're at a famous motorsport venue, Pukkohe Park Raceway.
02:02It opened in the early 60s and was once home to the New Zealand Grand Prix and the Tasman Series.
02:07And the biggest of names raced here, Brabham, McLaren, Moss, Hill, Clark and Jackie Stewart.
02:13And the tradition continues today with our V8 supercar heroes returning for the ITM 500 Auckland.
02:20Hello, everybody, and welcome to our special Anzac Day edition of V8 Supercar Championship Racing.
02:26And boy, have we got a big weekend planned for you.
02:29It's billed as the Trans-Tasman Tussle, where close friends become fierce rivals.
02:34And we've got a bunch of very competitive Aussies being hounded by three ultra-competitive Kiwis.
02:40One of them has stood at the top of the podium so far this year.
02:43And the other two have also been on the podium.
02:46We've got some great racing lined up.
02:48Super sprint racing qualifying coming up very soon.
02:51And we'll have a 100k sprint later on this afternoon.
02:54Really looking forward to it.
02:55We've had nine races so far.
02:57And the weird thing for me, no clear-cut pattern.
02:59In fact, we've had six different drivers occupy the top spot.
03:03Ten of the 25 have been on the podium.
03:06So, Craig Lowndes is now the championship leader by a margin of 28 points.
03:11From Mark Winterbottom, who finishes seventh, second and first at Winton.
03:16And vaults into contention in second place, as you can see there.
03:19Fabian Coulthard, position three.
03:21What about our series champion, Jamie Wincup?
03:23Fifth at the moment, looking for that sixth title.
03:26And as a result of that brilliant win in Winton,
03:29a great performance, Lee Holdsworth, also now inside the top ten.
03:33Mark Scaife joins me.
03:34Five-time series champion and six-time Bathurst winner.
03:37For me, Scaife, this place drips in rich history.
03:40I loved racing at this track.
03:41In fact, I think I love watching the racing here even more.
03:44And last year was so memorable.
03:46Thoroughly enjoyable experience.
03:48Yeah, hi, Neil. Hi, everybody.
03:49It is a really wild racetrack.
03:51It's got great history, as you said.
03:52It's very, very simple on paper, but it's very fast.
03:55You've got to be ultra committed.
03:57And it's one of the places, in terms of the history,
04:00we've seen some of the best racing ever in this particular layout.
04:04It's also got New Zealand, in terms of its per capita following of motorsport,
04:08probably the strongest following anywhere in the world.
04:10So, looking forward to it.
04:11Should be great.
04:12So, dawn service, a service earlier today.
04:14Very important for many of our drivers to be able to go
04:16to the Pukekohe War Memorial.
04:18And it was attended by Greg Murphy, by Garth Tander,
04:21by James Courtney, and for Scotty McLaughlin.
04:24Scaife, this day means so much to so many.
04:26It's a chance for all of us to reflect, to salute, to say thanks.
04:30And many of the cars will be running a special livery this weekend,
04:33and we'll be looking forward to seeing them soon.
04:35It's such an important day in Australia and New Zealand history, isn't it?
04:38And we never got to race on Anzac Day ever.
04:40I think it'll have a profound effect, a very powerful effect,
04:43for the drivers over the course of this weekend.
04:45And let's have a look, because you've already said
04:47what drama we saw last year in 2013.
04:50Let's have a look at what happened, because it had everything.
04:54It had the drama of the two leading guys of Winkup and Winterbottom.
04:58And right at the start, Winkup, big tyre blowout.
05:01Through he goes.
05:02That's the new section of Racetrack, first time last year.
05:05And then his main rival, left-hand rear tyre blowout for Mark Winterbottom.
05:10And this young man, Scott McLaughlin on home soil crompo,
05:14at the age of 19, wins his first event.
05:18And he came as the development series champion.
05:21What a moment for him.
05:22Then from pole position, Fabian Coulthard blazes away,
05:25and there was ag all weekend between Winterbottom and Winkup.
05:27And we loved this start.
05:29This was great.
05:30There was, seriously, all weekend, it didn't stop.
05:32Winterbottom had a big dive there on Winkup.
05:35Winkup went on to win that race.
05:37But this was the start of a year-long piece of aggro.
05:41That's the rivalry.
05:42And they jumped off the start line together,
05:44Winterbottom and Winkup.
05:46Check this out.
05:47Down the inside goes Winkup.
05:48Down the inside.
05:49Bang!
05:50Contact.
05:51Let's have a look from the outside.
05:53Sneaks to the left, flicks to the right,
05:56pushes him off the road.
05:57And in the end, he had a drama.
05:59He actually had his foot slip off the brake pedal.
06:01Easily done down there, but big consequences.
06:04So nice job there for Will Davison.
06:07That scapey put him in the lead of the championship
06:10in the Ford Falcon.
06:11Then going into our fourth and final race,
06:13as if we hadn't seen it all last year.
06:15And Jason Bright was on fire in the Team BOC entry.
06:18This was an extraordinary performance for him.
06:20He had great car speed,
06:21and the boys at Brad Jones Racing absolutely loved it.
06:24Jason Bright cleaned up that final race.
06:26And as a result was the winner of the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
06:30Of course, we lost Jason sadly on December the 15th, 2011.
06:34His wife Charlotte, daughter Sienna on the podium with Jason.
06:37That was a rare and very special moment in our business.
06:41Well, it's absolutely guaranteed to be another super busy weekend
06:44in our pit lane based on what you just saw here last year.
06:47As always, we've got Rihanna Crean down there together with Mark Larkham.
06:50In fact, Rihanna is down at the Volvo garage.
06:53It was 12 months ago that a young Scott McLaughlin made V8 supercar history
06:58by becoming the youngest ever V8 supercar driver.
07:01He did it in his debut season right here on home soil.
07:05Something he thought he could only ever dream about.
07:08As a kid growing up, he admits his walls were covered in posters
07:11of the King of Pukekohe, Greg Murphy.
07:14But now, Scotty's got his own Jandal army,
07:17and he is ready to take over the crown.
07:21So, all we've heard really so far is about the Kiwis.
07:23Frankly, I'm a bit over it.
07:25Let's talk about Aussie race drivers for a minute
07:27because I can tell you they're going to be quick here.
07:29None more so than this guy right behind me, Mark Widderbottom.
07:32Now, remember he won at Winton just recently, our last round.
07:35He was ultra quick here last year.
07:37He's already got a handful of podiums this year,
07:39and he's right behind Craig Lowndes, another Aussie,
07:41in the championship chase.
07:43Don't give up on Jamie Winkup.
07:44He'll bounce back this weekend.
07:45Nothing surer.
07:46Do not give up on the Aussie contingent.
07:48Not one bit.
07:50We've got a very busy day coming up and a very big weekend.
07:54V8 supercar qualifying for race 10 live in just a tick.
07:57And still to come, the Kiwis versus the Aussies on water.
08:00The Anzac Day Challenge on Auckland Harbour.
08:03Just add water for a little bit of fun.
08:04Also, two countries commemorate a very special day
08:08as we salute the men and women of our armed forces.
08:11And then, of course, later this afternoon,
08:12we'll have race number 10.
08:13Sprint racing live.
08:14100km's right here on 7.
08:16And we're very much looking forward to it
08:18based on what happened here last year
08:19after being away for six years.
08:21Well, how about this for a question to kickstart your weekend
08:25and your involvement this weekend with us.
08:27Our viewer vote question for this weekend.
08:30Which one of the three Kiwis might dominate the event?
08:33They're all going well.
08:34Van Gisburgh and McLaughlin and Fabian Coulthard.
08:36If you want to participate, download the 7 Sport app,
08:38or you can jump online and vote on the V8 supercar website.
08:42And we'll go off to the break now and relive
08:44that incredibly special moment here last year.
08:47Jason Bright winning the Jason Richards Trophy.
08:54This is the day we recognise one of our true fans in V8 supercar history,
08:58Jason Richards Memorial Trophy on the line.
09:01You know, Sunday was probably one of the toughest days.
09:04Getting in the car for that Sunday race, starting on pole,
09:06and having to come away with the win to at least know
09:10that I'd done everything I could to win the trophy was pretty important.
09:13Down the inside goes Bright, this is for the lead of the race,
09:16and he gets it done.
09:18Nice job, Jason Bright. Brilliant.
09:20To drive with that much emotion was, you know,
09:23something I haven't ever had to do before.
09:25Well, today the tears will flow.
09:27They're on their feet because sometimes
09:29it is about so much more than winning.
09:32I've had some, you know, really nice wins with, you know,
09:37Bathurst and Clipsals and Sandown 500s,
09:41but, you know, this, as far as sentimental value,
09:46is far above all of them.
09:48The 15th of December 2011,
09:51one of the saddest days in our business
09:53when we lost Jason Richards.
09:55It's our fourth event, 2014.
10:08It's our special Anzac Day coverage.
10:14Practice one is complete, the gates are now open,
10:17and this enormously passionate Kiwi crowd streaming in to see,
10:22qualifying now for race number 10.
10:25And then later this afternoon,
10:26it'll be 100Ks of super sprint racing action.
10:29Very much looking forward to it.
10:31And talk about intensity
10:33and the way things are rolling out today.
10:35I said earlier in the program
10:36it's going to be a busy day in Pit Lane.
10:38It is. Here's Rihanna.
10:39Yeah, Neil.
10:40We always talk about how important winning races is,
10:43but when it comes to winning the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy,
10:46it means just so much more.
10:48Last year it seemed only right
10:50that the trophy went home to Albury with Team BOC
10:53after Jason Bright took victory in the final race of the weekend.
10:57There wasn't a dry eye in the house.
10:59This trophy represents the hard-fought battle
11:01that Jason Richards went through,
11:03and the drivers this weekend will be fighting just as hard as he did
11:07to get their hands on this trophy
11:09and hold it high and proud on Sunday afternoon.
11:12Now, I know I was taking the mickey out of the Kiwis before,
11:15and I will continue to do so over the weekend,
11:17but no-one believes stronger than I do personally
11:19in the Anzac spirit, believe me.
11:21Now, Aussie guys, I said before, Aussie guys in Holden,
11:24particularly this Red Bull team,
11:25struggling again here in this first practice session.
11:28Thirteenth and eighteenth in that session.
11:31Now, Craig Lounce, who's just about to depart for qualifying,
11:33there he goes behind me.
11:34Jamie Winkup's car, you can still see here.
11:36This is really unusual for this team.
11:38You can see shock absorbers on the ground.
11:40They've put four new shocks in this car.
11:41Big dramas at the moment.
11:43They're not sorted.
11:44They're not sorted.
11:45And Jamie Winkup, big mistake down here
11:47between turns three and four in practice one.
11:49Got it all wrong.
11:50Had good quality tyres on at the time.
11:52Crosses it up, locks it up,
11:54buries it in the kitty litter down there,
11:55but fortunately stayed off the fence.
11:57But they have got no pace,
11:59and that was the plague for them at Winton as well.
12:02Let's have a look at our entry list today.
12:04Reigning champion is Jamie Winkup,
12:06Red Bull Racing Australia,
12:07Garth Tander with the Anzac colours on the car,
12:09number two for the Holden Racing team.
12:11Last round winner,
12:12Lee Holdsworth in the Erebus Motorsport V8 entry.
12:15A winner here last year,
12:16Mark Winterbottom for Ford and Pepsi Max,
12:18and the young rookie,
12:19Chas Mostert,
12:20Todd Kelly,
12:21Jack Daniels Racing Nissan,
12:22Jason Bright,
12:23that emotional victory here last year.
12:24Will Davison in the Erebus Motorsport V8 entry.
12:27Good practice run for him earlier.
12:28Fabian Coulthard been a winner so far this year.
12:31And Rick Kelly,
12:32how is his form in earlier practice?
12:34Very strong as well.
12:35Scotty Pye,
12:36Wilson Security Racing car number 16.
12:39And David Wall,
12:40those guys driving for Legend,
12:42Dick Johnson Racing,
12:43Jack Perkins driving for Team Gelbwen.
12:45Dale Wood,
12:46terrific result for him at Winton.
12:48And James Courtney also carrying Anzac colours
12:51out of respect this weekend.
12:52Russell Ingle,
12:53he was in a bit of strife the last time we went
12:55and played down at Winton,
12:56but he's competitive this year.
12:57Scotty McLaughlin,
12:58winner here in 2013.
13:00His Swedish teammate,
13:01Robert Dahlgren,
13:02Michael Caruso,
13:03and Tim Slade,
13:04cars 36 and 47.
13:06Davey Reynolds got a big pile of points at Winton.
13:09Last time out,
13:10Shane Van Gisbergen,
13:11local hero,
13:12car number 97.
13:13And having a great run so far this year,
13:16car number triple two,
13:17Nick Perkatt,
13:18Walkinshaw Racing,
13:19James Moffat,
13:20car number 360,
13:21and Craig Lowndes,
13:22car number triple eight,
13:23seeking his first championship in 15 years.
13:2615 years.
13:27Last time,
13:28$19.99 for Louns.
13:29Here's where we play today.
13:30Our stage is this,
13:31Pukakoe Park Raceway,
13:33a little under three kilometres.
13:35And this is a great track with a very high average speed.
13:38It's just a whisker,
13:39beneath 170 kilometres an hour.
13:41And that final complex from the turn eight hairpin through turns nine,
13:45ten and eleven is about as wild as you see with any race car.
13:49A big, fast sweeper off through turn one in sector one.
13:52And because we're going now into qualifying,
13:54we'll make reference to these sectors.
13:56Basically, sector two is all about the straight line performance
13:58and the way in which you brake to get into sector two.
14:01And here is Scott McLaughlin.
14:03We've got it covered from all angles this weekend.
14:05Lots of onboard coverage.
14:06And Scott McLaughlin,
14:08funnily enough,
14:09just said a moment ago,
14:10he was apologising to his engineer,
14:12and he put the microphone into his helmet,
14:16backwards scapey.
14:17He said to Richard Holloway,
14:18I apologise mate,
14:19I had the helmet apart after the last event at Winton.
14:22The reason he couldn't hear me properly is I had the Boone microphone
14:25mounted the wrong way,
14:26so he's apologetic mate.
14:27Everybody can hear him now,
14:29but they're hearing him up and down this pit lane
14:31because he's very competitive already this weekend, Larko.
14:34I bet you blokes wish I'd put my microphone on backwards a few times.
14:38Hey, Paul, seriously,
14:40I was watching that practice session this morning.
14:42So many shock absorbers, dampers we call them in the business,
14:45went into these cars up and down pit lane.
14:47What's difficult in this particular track is corner grip is one thing,
14:51and we saw Craig Lowndes this morning sliding around everywhere,
14:53but you've got to set the car for the bumps,
14:55and those two things don't necessarily go in concert well together.
14:59Sort the bumps, you haven't got good corner grip.
15:01So very much a balance and a lot of work still going on in the pit lane
15:04right now as we speak.
15:06Straight away, Scott McLaughlin competitive.
15:08One minute 3.3,
15:09the fastest time we've seen this weekend.
15:11He was second quickest in practice one earlier.
15:13Time for one more crack mate, one more crack.
15:15This is a highly intense qualifying session
15:18and that is Richard Holloway in the background scapey.
15:20He looked like he was very good at the end of the previous session
15:25in terms of the front grip.
15:27The car looks like it rides the bumps well.
15:29It does also look like they've got it very low at the front.
15:32It's bottoming very hard.
15:34Richard Holloway then just liaising with Scott
15:37to get himself organised for one more go.
15:39Can I have one more crack?
15:41This is the guy that we'll pay a lot of attention to this weekend.
15:44He's always vigorous with the way he drives the car.
15:47He's got great car control.
15:49And Shane Van Gisbergen on home soil.
15:53Just in front of him.
15:54It's Fabian.
15:56Shane Van Gisbergen talking to...
16:00To Jeff Slater who's instructed him to come to the pit lane this lap.
16:05The order at the moment is McLaughlin, Courtney Reynolds, Moffat.
16:08Rick Kelly's jumped to second and we do apologise.
16:10We've got some timing glitches in the system at the moment.
16:13We've had some pretty wild weather here.
16:15It's wet in the outfield.
16:16We're working on that for you.
16:17But we'll pick you up the spec in the call.
16:20So McLaughlin's gone on with his subsequent lap as we go back here and look at car 15.
16:25Rick Kelly currently P2 and off the road.
16:27He does not want to trigger a red flag.
16:29He's got to try and get this car out of here.
16:32He's not going to go out of there.
16:34So Rick Kelly in fact just eclipsed by his brother Todd's gone to P2.
16:41So Rick switches it off.
16:43His cars have got no cooling when they're not rolling.
16:46So turn two.
16:48Clipped the curb.
16:49Picked it up two wide.
16:50Did exactly what Wincup did.
16:52Got onto the grass at three.
16:53Which ricochets him across the road down at four.
16:56And nudges into the tyre wall down there.
16:59And that's the helmet cam view.
17:01Scotty McLaughlin is the fast man.
17:02He's on for the armour wall pole at the moment.
17:04Qualifying continues in just a moment from Auckland.
17:07Qualifying set to continue for our armour wall position for race number 10.
17:20We had a red flag just prior to the break.
17:23Because Rick Kelly unfortunately found the wall between turns three and four down there.
17:27And because he triggered the flag he loses his time.
17:29He was at that stage second.
17:31And then his brother grabbed position two from him.
17:33And puts him to the third spot.
17:35But because the flag came out Rick then gets dropped to the back of the auto.
17:39Loses his best time.
17:40He'll be very frustrated inside that helmet at the moment.
17:43Particularly as they've got very competitive cars that it seems.
17:46So green flag conditions once again.
17:48The field gets underway without qualifying.
17:51And the clock's ticking from about 14 and a half minutes from this point mark.
17:55And this is not a good way for Wincup to get into the last 15 minutes of this session.
18:01Because he had the drama in practice one.
18:04He went off the road.
18:06He's currently 15.
18:08His best lap time at this point is a 4-2-4.
18:11He's almost a second away from McLaughlin with a 3-3-6.
18:14And J.B. Wincup has been the benchmark qualifier in the sport for many years.
18:18And he is in serious trouble in terms of car pace and balance.
18:24Lounge, his teammate, the series leader, is 17th.
18:27Our ninth visit to this venue in the modern era.
18:30We first came back in 2001 with a non-championship race here in 1996.
18:36This weekend, we've got three 100km races and a 200km blast on Sunday.
18:42There's Eric Pender, engineer for the team.
18:44And category technical manager there in the blue shirt for V8 Supercars is Frank Adamson,
18:48just inspecting the front of the car.
18:51Here's our Officer Grant Rowley in the background.
18:53So Rick Kelly, with his head down low, hops out of the car,
18:57heads back to think about what happened and why,
19:00and whether or not they can do anything with that car,
19:03get it right for the race later on today.
19:05So the fastest man at the moment on screen, Scott McLaughlin.
19:07See that cable?
19:09Off the back of the dash there.
19:11Done hooked to whatever it should be hooked to.
19:13That'll be moving around.
19:14That would be distracting.
19:15The in-the-eye line.
19:18Just hanging down near the Valvoline sign on Scott's left leg.
19:25The order at the moment, McLaughlin.
19:27Kelly.
19:28James Courtney.
19:29David Reynolds.
19:30James Moffat.
19:31Mark Winterbottom.
19:32Nick Percat.
19:33Jack Perkins.
19:34And David Walls.
19:35Here's Rihanna.
19:36Rick Kelly, it's tough when we've got limited sessions.
19:38You've got to push hard to get those lap times in,
19:40but obviously that one came undone.
19:42Yeah, it's really unfortunate.
19:44Absolutely, I just made a mistake there.
19:46The car bounced a lot offline.
19:47There's not a lot of grip,
19:48and we're in trouble a long way before we went off
19:50and glanced the wall there
19:52because there's just no grip offline.
19:54So really disappointed.
19:55The guys gave me such a good car today,
19:56and I didn't do the job I needed to do.
19:58So going to have to try and battle from the back,
20:00but it's pretty tough to pass around here.
20:01What are the conditions like on the track?
20:03We've seen quite a few guys have quite a few moments out there.
20:06What is it like?
20:07If you're online, the grip's not too bad,
20:09but we know Pookie's a real challenge from a driver's point of view.
20:11And engineering to start with,
20:13trying to set the car up for so many different characteristics around the corners.
20:17So it was a real challenge anyway in that first half an hour session,
20:21but we had a really good car, which EP gave me there.
20:23So just disappointed.
20:25Obviously, you're not allowed to compete in the rest of the session,
20:27and they take your fastest lap, and we only had done one.
20:29So we would have been in the top few there on the first set.
20:33So now we're down in 23rd and most likely start 25th.
20:36So absolutely my bad.
20:38Thanks, Rick.
20:40Meanwhile, Michael Caruso has jumped up.
20:43So he's in fourth.
20:44Winkup has done a great job.
20:45So he's gone to third.
20:46Fabian Coulthard is second.
20:49So McLaughlin, Coulthard, Winkup, Slade now.
20:52Caruso, Holdsworth, Kelly, Pye, Courtney and Reynolds.
20:56It's a pretty honest appraisal from Rick Kelly wasn't about what happened there before.
21:00So Van Gisbergen now to the top of one minute 3.2 for the VIP Petfoods Holden Commodore driver.
21:07So he's displaced.
21:08Lowndes has found support.
21:09They've tuned that car up quickly, and it's obviously made a huge difference whatever they did.
21:14Winterbottom's quick in the midfield as well at the moment.
21:17So Van Gisbergen from Lowndes.
21:19Then McLaughlin now back to third.
21:21Fabian Coulthard to fourth.
21:23Will Davison's in the mix here as well.
21:25He's just jumped up.
21:26Oh, and Winterbottom with a huge moment.
21:28He must have got onto the grass at the final corner.
21:31Oh mate, hit the wall.
21:33He's had a moment at the final corner, Winterbottom.
21:36And he's scraped it down the wall, we believe.
21:39That was massive.
21:41We saw the vision of Jamie Winkup earlier today.
21:44Check this out.
21:45This is at over 200 kilometres an hour, sideways, wet grass, right out to the fence.
21:52Oh!
21:53Gives it a bump, but this could have been big.
21:55He gathers it up.
21:56This is the bit that really could have hurt.
21:59That bit there has finally, lucky there's enough road for the pit exit.
22:03Because if it didn't have that tar, it would have gone in the fence on the right.
22:07You're out for the day.
22:09So the question now, is there damage on the left rear of that car?
22:13And I reckon the answer to that is a definite yes.
22:15Look at it.
22:16It's just crabbing down the road.
22:17They're going to have to bring him in.
22:18He's 15th at the moment.
22:19That's broken a tow link or done some other damage.
22:22You can't whack a concrete wall at that speed without a consequence.
22:25But how that car didn't find its way to the inside wall is a minor miracle.
22:32He's got a good steering damage.
22:33Matt, his left hand down.
22:35Yeah.
22:36So here's his teammate, Mostat, with a big brake block up down at five.
22:40So that's a little bit of a 60-second FPR highlight show.
22:47Because that was a very big moment.
22:49And he was saying about the front, but it's not the front.
22:51No.
22:52Well, I think it's both in fact, Mark.
22:53So we could see the damage to the left rear corner of the car.
22:55And when he was driving in a straight line, the steering wheel was down one side as well.
22:59So he's got it going at both ends at the moment.
23:01That's going to take him out of the game.
23:02Here's Jason Bright.
23:03Car number eight, Team BOC entry.
23:06He looks quick at the moment.
23:07He's currently eighth.
23:08He's been the fastest man to the first sector split.
23:10Remember, he was the guy that won the final race here last year in that emotional moment
23:16to grab the Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
23:19He's had a weird year with a bizarre role at Adelaide that was spectacular.
23:25They had to go through a whole process of commissioning a new car.
23:28As Bright goes to the top.
23:30Number one.
23:31One minute, 3.1.
23:32Quick speed.
23:33We'll take a break.
23:34Qualified's building up for a great armour-all pole result.
23:38Stay with us.
23:40You drive me crazy.
23:42When you're looking to...
23:49Qualifying continues at Pukakoe for race number 10.
23:53We're looking at the moment at Garth Panda.
23:55He's at the bottom of the order in 25th position.
23:58Doesn't have a decent time to his name at all at the moment.
24:01Going into the previous break, the big story was that wild moment for Mark Winterbottom
24:06when he rubbed it up on the wall coming off the final corner.
24:09There's damage to that car.
24:11So we're interested to see whether they can get it back out there.
24:14Winterbottom at the moment is down in 18th place.
24:16And there's not a Ford inside the top 10 at the moment.
24:19It's Bright fastest.
24:21One minute, 3.1.
24:22Shane Van Gisbergen is the second quickest.
24:24And to answer a bit more about the question in relation to Frosty,
24:27Larko can add.
24:28Yeah, well Neely whacked it pretty hard.
24:30I watched him come down the pit lane and it looked like that rear wheel
24:32was pointing to the South Island.
24:34It was that bad.
24:35Front's okay.
24:36They've got the front tyre back on.
24:37They're trying to get there.
24:38Front bent toe link.
24:39There we are.
24:40I'll just drag it out here.
24:41There you are.
24:42That's your toe link.
24:43That determines your rear wheel alignment.
24:44They're putting a new one in there.
24:45Which they'll already have these little rod ends they're called.
24:47They'll have those preset at a length.
24:48So when they put that in there, that'll be bang on and the wheel alignment will be correct.
24:52So there should be nothing wrong with that car when it goes out.
24:55As everyone departs out with a few minutes to go behind me.
24:57I think Mark might just get out at the end of the session.
25:00Well done Larko.
25:01So what Mark was referring to there about preset.
25:04When you have that toe rod preset to a length, when you put it back in the car and we're looking
25:11at millimetres here.
25:12So remember they've got to be absolutely perfect.
25:14When it's preset you put it back in and therefore the wheel alignment, the affected area of the car is as per the specification which will be on a set up sheet and done as a consequence of that.
25:26So they're trying very, very hard.
25:29Larko?
25:30If you're wondering why they're taking so long, they're still down here working on it.
25:33Typically this could be done in about three minutes, four minutes max.
25:36But often what happens when you're banging like this, the little aluminium mount that clamps onto it has been bent and damaged.
25:41So they actually had to pull the caliper off to get a shot at it to get the old one out.
25:45But no, they're underway.
25:46This is good.
25:47Well done boys.
25:48So he's dropped now to 19th in the order Mark Winterbottom.
25:50He's got three and three quarter minutes remaining in this session to try and achieve something.
25:55Everybody seeks some space around here to try and get a lap done.
25:59They're all chasing Jason Bright.
26:00One minute, 3.1 is the target.
26:03And it's incredibly tight at the moment.
26:05You look down through this order and there's nothing in it.
26:07There's 18 odd cars separated by half a second.
26:09Tough believe, isn't it?
26:11So Bright, Ben Gisbergen, Lowndes, Courtney, Davison, McLaughlin, Percat, Coulthard.
26:16Winkup, currently ninth.
26:18And Tim Slade, tenth.
26:21Rubbing salt into that injury for Mark Winterbottom.
26:24Practice one, held a little earlier.
26:26Fastest man for Frosty, one minute 3.5.
26:29So he was the one with the run on the board at the end of the first session.
26:33Scott McLaughlin was quick, as was Will Davison.
26:38There he is, he's out.
26:39So he's back out and on.
26:40So only Rick Kelly not participating.
26:42So we've got 24 cars out on the racetrack at the moment.
26:45This is Jack Perkins on screen for Gelblen.
26:48Always Jack at the moment.
26:51He's in 14th position.
26:52Amazing.
26:53All he has to do is find 3 tenths of a second.
26:55Sounds really easy.
26:56Not so hard to compute.
26:58Oh, and off the road, Craig Lowndes.
27:01It's been a wild start to the day for him.
27:05So that'll be, if he gets around this time, there's only 2 minutes 20 odd to go.
27:11So he needs to get himself organised for a final last lap run.
27:16Let's see what this lap does for Jack Perkins.
27:19As Neil said, he was 14th.
27:23And stays 14th.
27:253.6.
27:26He did a 3.55 before that.
27:28He's actually been here before Jack in 2007.
27:31He crashed in practice and so he didn't get to actually race here.
27:35So he's kind of regarded to a degree as a pookie rookie.
27:39He hasn't actually been here in anger for a race.
27:44But he has been around here.
27:46He's also driven a lot with Greg Murphy in the New Zealand Super Touring Championship in the V8s as well.
27:51And he co-drove with Murph and helped deliver Murph.
27:54He's working with us flat out this weekend.
27:56The busy boy helped deliver a championship to him last year.
27:59And he's trying to defend that.
28:00We'll have those V8 Super Tourers in our coverage this weekend as we go on board with Davey.
28:06And our defending series champion with V8 Supercar is Jamie Winkup.
28:11And he has just lobbed into seconds.
28:13So he's best lap so far.
28:153.27.
28:16So he's eight hundredths of a second behind Bright.
28:19So that's a good performance because they've been really struggling.
28:22Dave Reynolds massively sideways off turn five to turn six.
28:26So this timing sheet will rattle around now.
28:31Mostyn, who loses his last lap, goes through there and will not be recorded based on running through the chicane.
28:39So he's also got one last go.
28:41Not quite one minute left in the session.
28:44So at the moment, it's Jason Bright on Provincial Pole to grab an arm and all award.
28:50Here's David Reynolds, car number 55.
28:52He is ninth.
28:53They've all got one more run in them.
28:55Bright, Winkup, Van Gisbergen.
28:57We're watching Jason Bright at the moment.
28:59Fourteen pole positions to his career tally.
29:05And they got this car working beautifully here last year.
29:08They've got it working well at the moment.
29:10He's got a tiny margin of .07 of a second over Winkup at present.
29:16Winkup went through the chicane also and had his last lap removed from the timesheets.
29:21Two nil.
29:22So that was his best run prior to that.
29:24A 3.27.
29:25But he went straight ahead.
29:27So Bright from Winkup.
29:28We'll just see what that lap does for Bright.
29:30A 3.24.
29:31500 slower than his previous best.
29:35Check this out.
29:36This is Caruso.
29:37So the chequered flag has now come out.
29:39It's a question of completing your lap.
29:41This is Caruso.
29:42Norton Nissan.
29:44Does he pop up the order?
29:46He stays 16th at the moment.
29:47It's still Bright.
29:48One minute, 3.1.
29:49Winkup who's come to the pit lane.
29:52Van Gisbergen.
29:53Lowndes is fourth.
29:54Then Will Davison.
29:55There was a little shuffle just outside the top ten.
29:58Then Lee Holdsworth moved up.
30:00We're looking at car number 33.
30:02Rear wheels were locked.
30:04He was sideways.
30:06This is McLaughlin's last run at it.
30:08He couldn't make the turn in point.
30:10And it was over and out for him.
30:12So he's currently seventh.
30:14But that was going to be better.
30:15That was his best lap prior to that.
30:18So Bright, Winkup there.
30:19Gisbergen.
30:20P7 at the month mate, P7.
30:24Between James Courtney and Nick Percat, who's had a wonderful qualifying Percat in Car222.
30:30Oh, stop.
30:31Yeah, stop.
30:32Thanks, Mel.
30:33Now where did Frosty end up in all that?
30:34He got it back to tenth which is a handsome performance after that spook.
30:37Right, we...
30:39That was a great job by...
30:41That was good.
30:42Everybody down there at Ford Performance Racing.
30:45Pepsi, Max, well done.
30:46Yeah, really sorry about that, guys.
30:47So, Jason Bright, pole position number 15 of his career in his first for 2014.
30:53Well done, Brightie.
30:54Great way to start the weekend from Jamie Winkup.
30:56How tight are the margins, Van Gisbergen.
30:58There's something for the Kiwis to get excited about.
31:01Craig Lowndes, Will Davison.
31:03Great performance, Erebus Motorsport.
31:04Courtney, McLaughlin, Percat.
31:06Then it's Coulthard, Winterbottom.
31:08Great performance to drag that car back into the 10 from Reynolds, Holtzworth, Moffat,
31:13Slade, Todd Kelly.
31:14That's disappointing after being second at one point.
31:17And Rick Kelly.
31:18How frustrating for him to be so competitive and in the wall early in that session.
31:22But it's all about Jason Bright.
31:24He's grabbed the pole for race number 10.
31:26It was just 0.07 of a second that got the job done for Jason Bright and Team BOC
31:40with an armour or pole position for race number 10.
31:42A brilliant performance and it follows on beautifully from his tremendous performance here in 2013.
31:48What a fantastic job.
31:50His first pole for this season and his career 15th.
31:54He's with Rihanna.
31:55Congratulations, Jason Bright.
31:56There's $1,000 from Armouril for the pole award.
31:59Now, we know how much this place means to you.
32:01What it represents to get that trophy back to Albury again.
32:04Yeah, it's a good way to start the weekend.
32:06Qualifying has been our weakness this year.
32:07So, to put it on pole for today's race is handy.
32:11So, hopefully we can get off the line pretty well.
32:12And, you know, it should be a good weekend, hopefully.
32:14Hot foot it.
32:15You've got a race in a couple of minutes.
32:16Well done.
32:18Yeah, it's great to see and congratulations to all at Team BOC.
32:23And what about our friends at Shannon's?
