00:00:06Great form there mate, different strategy, we didn't expect it, started right at the back of the grid,
00:00:11got yourself all the way up to 12th, and mate, you know as well as I do,
00:00:14what was going to happen to those tyres in the last 10 laps of that race,
00:00:16but they actually hung in, good tyre management.
00:00:18Yeah, exactly right, I mean the biggest thing is probably a bit of what Dad did teach me,
00:00:21don't spin the wheels out in the farm, so just keep it straight, drive it straight,
00:00:25and really try and look after it, and make sure it was there in the end,
00:00:27and unfortunately we didn't qualify well, so we made our mind up at the start of the race to do that,
00:00:31and just good to get a result for Jaldwin and everyone that's here this weekend supporting us.
00:00:34We often talk about the difference between a qualifying car, Jack, and a race car,
00:00:37clearly it wasn't necessarily good at qualifying, but race car, you say don't spin the wheels,
00:00:41we know how hard that is to do on this surface, but it does pay dividends,
00:00:44so often you look like you're going slower at the start of the race, but good conservation, that's what it's about.
00:00:48Yeah, exactly right, and because I'd sort of mentally prepared myself at the start,
00:00:52I didn't get into any battles on the first lap, and didn't do practice starts or anything,
00:00:55really looked after the rear tyres, because the surface is like a cheese grater,
00:00:59you want to make sure there's some cheese on the tyres at the end of the race,
00:01:01so we'll see what happens this one, we may do the same thing, we may not.

00:01:14you are one of the ambassadors, you've had a chance to talk to some of the young guys
00:01:18who are up and coming in race engineering and race mechanics.
00:01:21Yeah, yeah, yeah, Komatsu, a big sponsor of ours, actually one of the second or third
00:01:25since over the last 10 years, so huge involvement, and yeah, hanging out with the apprentices,
00:01:32I can relate to that, you know, I was young yesterday, so we've been doing some good stuff,
00:01:37which has been good fun.
00:01:38That first race for you was a tough one, I know you don't like being mid-pack
00:01:41or towards the end of the pack, we've got another one to redeem yourself

00:01:47Yeah, we've got some work to do, but we'll be all right, hopefully we've made some big changes

00:02:04but not bad, mate, it's tough out there, grid's close, but it's hard for people at home
00:02:09to understand this track surface and how hard it is to drive a car,
00:02:12or disciplined is probably the right word, to look after your tyres.

00:02:21so you're supposed to say I'm an athlete, I've trained, I've worked hard at getting this right,

00:02:42So, yeah, then the tyres, my tyre life wasn't too bad,
00:02:46the degradation, my car's not too bad.

00:10:25You've had a close look at that car now,
00:10:27having raced it then in that race.
00:10:28Where are its strengths and weaknesses versus your own car, mate?
00:10:32I think its strengths, I think it's coming off the corner.
00:10:34I think that's obviously getting its power down,
00:10:36and it's really critical around here, obviously,
00:10:37because you can do that.
00:10:38You can look after the rear tyre and continue that through the race.
00:10:41So it gets its power down, obviously it gets it out of the bowl,
00:10:43up the back straight where it passes.
00:10:45Its weak spot's probably a little bit under brakes down into corners,
00:10:48but that's only, you know, that's sort of basically,
00:10:50it's not that much difference really, to be honest.
00:10:52So they've got some really good strength there.
00:10:54One of their better strengths, obviously, is tyre wear.
00:10:56They're looking after their tyre better than we are.
00:10:58So, mate, I guess the best strategy here for you
00:11:00is to try and win this start, which is an obvious one,
00:11:02and try and manage the race from the front.
00:11:03Yeah, we thought we were the race one there,
00:11:05but unfortunately just the rear tyres went away just before the stop,
00:11:08and then after the stop you're in traffic,
00:11:10so then you burn the fronts up trying to get past people.
00:11:12So it sort of cascaded a little bit after the pit stop,
00:11:15but, you know, that's life, that's motor racing.

00:12:05We've been fourth on the grid in Tassie,
00:12:07but, you know, we've got great consistent speed now.
00:12:10Strategy is a huge thing.
00:12:11You know, we were very aggressive in the last race.
00:12:13I was the first car to pit,
00:12:14and we didn't quite have the tie life we needed,
00:12:17so it was a tough end of the race,
00:12:18but I think you'll see some pretty different games going on now.

00:13:22Fifth stop of 14 for this year's championship,
00:13:25and we go all over this great country,
00:13:27and we come to this one.
00:13:28It's a historic venue.
00:13:29We've done so much racing here over the years.
00:13:322.42K, soft tyres,
00:13:34as we saw in the first race.
00:13:35It's all about rubber.
00:13:36It certainly is,
00:13:37and it's so hard on tyres.
00:13:39We talk about it all the time, Nunes,
00:13:41but the surface has degraded over the years,
00:13:44and basically it makes the wheels spin everywhere,
00:13:47and it hurts the front tyre just as much
00:13:48because the cars are sliding
00:13:50from the time you put your foot on the brake
00:13:51to the time you exit the corner,
00:13:53and we can't really explain it well enough
00:13:55other than seeing the time difference
00:13:57that actually yields in the race.
00:13:59Cars are two seconds slower in only 20 laps.

00:38:37last year it was the
00:38:38opposite he was the
00:38:39worst by a long way
00:38:40so he's been able to
00:38:41put his way to the
00:38:42front of the class
00:38:43you need to get
00:38:44yourself best of your
00:38:44team before he can go
00:38:46anywhere else but
00:38:47there's a long road
00:38:48ahead for nissan

00:41:14got to almost make contact
00:41:15with the car to come back

00:41:17and that momentum was very
00:41:19nicely done by Mosden to do
00:41:20that Fabian showed some
00:41:22attitude through five car just
00:41:25stepping out having to make a
00:41:27correction of the steering
00:41:28just back behind them guys is
00:41:31Scott Pye has done a really
00:41:32good job he's in P7
00:41:33Neil Crompton just said that
00:41:35that's the equal best since
00:41:38Tasmania earlier in the year
00:41:40so that's a great job by Scott
00:41:41Pye we should point out to
00:41:44DJR and FPR the only four
00:41:46teams in the lineup these cars
00:41:47run from Dick's team in
00:41:49Queensland but they have a
00:41:50lot of crossover with FPR and
00:41:51some of their componentry and
00:41:53information sharing and the
00:41:54like so it's all about the
00:41:56greater good of the blue oval
00:41:57moving forward and this is a
00:41:58young guy with very good
00:42:00international pedigree he
00:42:01went on that wild ride here
00:42:02last year in the helicopter
00:42:04over the hill sideways for
00:42:0645 odd metres airborne this is
00:42:08a lot nicer run and they were
00:42:10a little bit lost yesterday
00:42:11they weren't really anywhere
00:42:12strong but they're much better
00:42:14today and if you don't feel
00:42:15well right now
00:42:16probably turn away because
00:42:18this is what it looks like
00:42:19with Rick Kelly it's 21st

00:42:46dropped a handful of spots
00:42:47there in the last couple of
00:42:48laps which will be obviously
00:42:50frustrating for him
00:42:52you watch his eye line so his
00:42:53eye line will lift up on the
00:42:56main straight so you can see
00:42:57his eye line change and he
00:42:58looks down at the dash and
00:42:59looks back up high you can see
00:43:01that roller coaster the road
00:43:02comes back at you in the
00:43:04braking area then his eye line
00:43:06is towards the apex then the
00:43:07eye line is now out towards the
00:43:09grass because I've got four
00:43:10wheels I think if you can see
00:43:11his eyes they'll be opening
00:43:12quite wide exactly yeah they
00:43:14were pretty white by the time
00:43:15they got to there but it was
00:43:17interesting then to see where
00:43:20he's actually looking and
00:43:22there's a fair bit of action
00:43:23going up ahead of him he's
00:43:24looking at that too wishing and
00:43:26hoping and hoping Craig
00:43:28Lowndes is the impressive one

00:43:31race now the difference in the
00:43:33speed and that triple a car is
00:43:35phenomenal those guys have worked
00:43:37a bit of magic oh his wreck runs
00:43:39very wide at the exit of five
00:43:41that Perkins in the pits again
00:43:44another flat tire there we go
00:43:47there's that body work must be
00:43:48rubbing on it
00:43:49check this out for the rubber
00:43:53build-up on the outside of the
00:43:55road look at the amount of
00:43:56rubber coming out from under the
00:43:58cars so that's why it becomes a
00:44:00one-lane racetrack you just can't
00:44:02get out there it's drivers call it
00:44:04the marbles when you get on it
00:44:06that's what it feels like
00:44:07basically just run the car on
00:44:08those high bumps of rubber some
00:44:11big marbles out there Mark

00:45:00Davison trying to make up some ground
00:45:02on those fresher tyres
00:45:03so nerds if you don't think
00:45:09qualifying is important take a leap
00:45:11out of James out of Jamie Winkup's
00:45:13book here he qualified bad in the
00:45:16previous race and ended up running
00:45:18like a dog in the whole race here
00:45:1917th qualifies well here to the
00:45:23pointy end of the field clearly the
00:45:25car's better but you've got to start
00:45:26at the front this is a classic
00:45:28example that when he doesn't start
00:45:30at the front then you're in top
00:45:31he hasn't had to burn the tyres
00:45:32up he hasn't had to fight guys for
00:45:3415th 16th position he's managed to
00:45:36drive his own race he's had a pretty
00:45:38lonely one which has obviously helped
00:45:39as well and he's got the pace he's
00:45:41able to look ahead not have to look
00:45:42behind and just drive his own race
00:45:44and he's built championship wins on
00:45:46the back of that early in years where
00:45:48he's had the league all the way
00:45:49through he's made him chase he's
00:45:51chasing this year Winterbottom is
00:45:53normally the guy doing the chasing the
00:45:54roles have been reversed this year we
00:45:56jump on board with the reigning champ
00:45:58and it's a case here of a bit of air
00:46:00in front bit of air behind six to go
00:46:02bring it home and make some points and
00:46:04think about tomorrow and think about
00:46:07not being in this pack because that's
00:46:08where he would have been in the previous
00:46:09race 17th is exactly where Ben
00:46:12Gisbergen is right now
00:46:14and it's off the young and a hole
00:46:16and it's off the young and a hole
00:46:18Perkac Bryant off it
00:46:21I thought he was going to make contact
00:46:25and I thought James going to make contact
00:46:26with the back of Jason's car there
00:46:28right back in behind is Will Davison on
00:46:31fresher tyres remember
00:46:33so we saw Will Davison and Jason come in very late
00:46:39Bryant's always been good there he's been very very good on the way into Colb all weekend
00:46:43and I don't think Perkac thought he was going to stick the nose through in the centre
00:46:47like the way he did just then but I think he released the brake drove the car into the hole
00:46:51and then Perkac had nowhere to go and he had to relent
00:46:54yep it's a good manoeuvre there by Jason
00:46:57he'll probably get down the inside of Shane Van Gisberg and there's a similar wave
00:47:03he can get that run off the top of the hill
00:47:05and Moffat's just frustrated he's very frustrated he can see the the body language of his car just what
00:47:10he's doing with the guys in front of him the little touches here and there he wants to be released
00:47:17another challenging drive for Shane Van Gisberg
00:47:24the last one dead last after a strategy is going to pay off as Fabian Coulthard finally gets the run
00:47:32on Chas Mozdard again will he get the crisscross this time will he change the way he exits this corner
00:47:38he has this time he didn't allow Mozdard to get a run he slowed the car down a little bit more
00:47:42was able to turn it and cover Mozdard from getting the crisscross
00:47:47that was a much smarter manoeuvre by Fabian he braked the car very nicely he turned it in slower
00:47:54he was able to keep the car held tighter and as Greg said made the exit much nicer
00:48:01in terms of acceleration that was the key to holding that position
00:48:04so on board now with Scott McLaughlin look in the background there's Mozdard big run wide a bit of contact
00:48:12that's all fine nothing wrong with that then up the inside so they run up the hill a little bit of bump
00:48:18oh he made the grass so that gave him the run he actually he ran into the grass by himself
00:48:22they both ran what they both ran real deep in behind Scott
00:48:25Mozdard wide and then Coulthard wide as well that's some good stuff
00:48:30he just held it nice the way see the way he made that exit nice and straight he had no way that
00:48:36Mozdard could actually do the crisscross which as i said was mostly about containing the entry speed when
00:48:41he did it in fact i thought that Scott Pye was going to have a big lunge when all that was on
00:48:46finally before exactly yeah Scott Pye was able to close up because of that little exchange he's right
00:48:52behind Chas Mozdard now he's driven very well in this race Murph he's he's done a nice job he's got
00:48:59no drama he's got no damage on the car just look at the inputs there nice and gentle it's very smooth
00:49:04that car looks really strong right now he's on target to equal his best result of the year he's
00:49:08seventh oh he's getting a rabbit almost guy rated i'll be quiet now yeah yeah exactly change of
00:49:15direction there between four and five has always been a challenge always been a challenge hasn't it
00:49:20and it just as you get off the throttle short shift change direction in the car the back of the car just
00:49:25gives a twitch you've got to recover it really quickly nice nice throttle modulation just have a look at
00:49:31his brake performance here very good he defeated a couple of gears to get it stopped nice apex nice exit short shift
00:49:48i don't know whether he needed to use second at the final corner
00:49:53this is davidson oh here we go
00:49:55the davis has managed to use those tires not probably as much as he would like he's up to 19th a
00:50:03little bit more speed than these guys right now but as i said before that moffett car it just looks aggro
00:50:10there he's not happy at all but he's not able to do anything about it and perk out ahead of him
00:50:16just fast enough that strategy just has not paid off for davison at all has it not at all his angle p10 started
00:50:23from third on the rip for the second time in a row today but things have been this has looked
00:50:28a bit nicer a bit more solid than the race earlier on they've tuned it up okay final lap
00:50:33though for craig lounge he's got a nice margin it's 1.8 seconds he's been able to control this one really
00:50:39well and and nerds he's the fastest of all the top guys that's impressive hey for this for the for
00:50:43those guys to turn that car around to make it that much competitive that much more competitive than
00:50:48what it was from race one he's only got half a left to go craig lands he's done this many many many
00:50:53times here he's on his way to another one this will be his 15th win does he equal or beat someone
00:51:03some other bloke we don't want to talk about it
00:51:08but it's a very good performance at barbagello for this man isn't it yeah it is he really has a great
00:51:14record here he's on his way home fighting for the championship trying to win the crown for the
00:51:18first time in 15 years he's inching closer to being v8 supercars first centurion win 97 for craig
00:51:26lounge at barbagello in perth he makes it home it's another one for holden it's another one for red bull

00:52:18some points from winterbottom it's not many because he's just behind him on the road it was a good
00:52:23drive by mark winterbottom also that was an early strategy he forced people to come in with him at
00:52:27that time that man looks happy yeah he's a very good winner he's a very low average loser very good very

00:53:09another record last year didn't he so i mean he's just had an unbelievable run at this place
00:53:14and he knows how important it is he knows how important it is to bounce back
00:53:17and that reaction with he and jeremy doesn't get any stronger than that noons when you've got a great

00:54:49got to try and keep doing that too but race one was okay but we still salvaged something quite good
00:54:54and uh that race the car was really good so um they found some tire life in the in the red bull cars so

00:59:19your race there well mate put some green tires on for the second stint and it worked for you yeah
00:59:23it was important obviously at courtney as early as we could i actually made some contact with him
00:59:26within which i have to apologize for but uh yeah it was important for us to get that track position
00:59:30so that we could manage our own race you know obviously when you're stuck behind someone it's
00:59:34so hard to look after the tires and the pace was actually pretty quick i was surprised we were able
00:59:38to do those times for the entire race but yeah we had a fantastic race car we certainly need
00:59:42to work on quality because you know i can see that we can get podiums i'm sure it's coming soon
00:59:46but we just need to qualify further up i think we're seeing the little signs of a good future
00:59:50from you mate now that's quite a bit of damage on the back of the car along the side of the car
00:59:53here just quickly tell us what happened there uh just rubbing i guess rubbing's racing but uh
00:59:57the back's actually coming into pit lane i think caruso or someone in the first race got into the back
01:00:01but yeah i guess the the last corner moves a few of them you end up rubbing with other cars
01:00:06and stuff not major hits but you got to get through don't you all part of the gig well done mate

01:00:19lively wasn't it it was here at the first corner it was on look at wickup trying to get up the inside
01:00:23of the volvo it went right through the next couple of corners while they were doing that lounges was
01:00:27clearing away betty clemenko would have had half failure right here blake holdsworth and will davison
01:00:32side by side but they got away with it and raced on they certainly did and there was a lot of
01:00:37really good midfield action also too the the thing that i thought was impressive that was impressive
01:00:43that was a move the grip movement i went wow how did you do that scott pie which was down the inside
01:00:48and got that move made on james courtney and there was a lot of really good quality driving and a lot
01:00:54of stuff that i thought in terms of the way that the guys gave each other room to race
01:00:58and got away with that maneuver up and over turn four was was exquisite there was some really good stuff
01:01:05amongst the top guys wasn't a case of who was not going to stop it was the case of when did they stop
01:01:10because they all came on in for some more dumbbell boots a little bit of a rub there between fabian
01:01:14cool tart and chas boston the kiwi got down the inside of the pepsi max board and they had a great
01:01:20fight all the way through but no one could really stop craig lounge win 97 win 15 at barbago raceway
01:01:28very much in this title fight winner bottom though not far away red bull racing australia and fbr's
01:01:34pepsi max crew class of the field one two three between them and a cuddle there with jeremy moore
01:01:40to finish off the day fabian cool tartar second place in the first race a fifth in that when you
01:01:46started from 10th so you had a little bit of work to do but good solid points yeah it was awesome you
01:01:51know we we had a pretty good car and we had a good enough car to pass some cars which you know here's
01:01:55renowned to be pretty tough to pass but you know this machine was pretty good you know local racing
01:02:00guys have done a fantastic job so you know onwards and upwards for tomorrow i continue to talk to you
01:02:04about your consistency so far this season you're currently sitting 122 points behind the the
01:02:10championship leader so well and truly championship battle is on well it is but you know like i always
01:02:15say it's uh only early days you know if this was december i'd be a little bit happier but you know
01:02:20we've got a long way to go um but yeah look to be this close and this far in the hunt at this stage
01:02:24of the of the year it's you know it's pretty cool today we saw two very different strategies in both
01:02:29races a lot of the cars came in earlier than what we would have expected in that second race
01:02:33tomorrow's a whole new day a much longer race the tires are going to be even more talked about
01:02:38well that's right but you know i think the strength of our car is you know the longer we get to go on
01:02:42and that you know the better we go so you know hopefully uh you know come tomorrow you know strategy
01:02:46is obviously going to play a huge part but you know we're going to need tire life so you know
01:02:49hopefully my lockwood car's got good tire life and uh we're on the podium and get to spray some
