00:00We're four best friends who grew up in small towns where it's not always easy being queer
00:04My name is Faye and I am an actor who loves fishing. I'm SJ. I'm a creative director and I love nature
00:10I'm Vic. I'm a designer and I love to fish. I'm Emma. I'm a designer who loves being near water
00:18Fishing is our safe space together
00:20We don't often see a lot of women fishing
00:23It makes you wonder who else isn't been included
00:26So when we got the chance to go to Ontario Canada to fish with some amazing people
00:34Hi, my name is Ken, I am Dave Franklin II Christine. I'm Emily O'Brien. My name is Lisa. Hey, I'm Demetrian today
00:41We're gonna be fly-fishing out here on the Madagascar River. I'm an everyday angler in Ontario
00:45I'm also a science teacher as people get more blind the harder it is to get out
00:51I've been an addiction counselor for 10 years now. I welcome you guys to come fish with me
01:00When you're out in a canoe you are using indigenous technology that is thousands of years old
01:07Like most people I grew up never thinking I would end up in prison. We're going out after the elusive musk alone lucky Lisa, let's go
01:18So vision
01:21Yeah
01:23We packed our bags for a cozy cabin in the woods we couldn't pass up the chance to get hooked
01:34I'm Emma and I love surfing because it's the act of connecting with nature
01:40Like a huge open body of water. There's something really meditative and therapeutic about that very similar to fishing I think
01:48It's not about being the best it's not about sort of being a winner it's about competing with myself
01:57That's where it's very relatable and transferable fishing because
02:01Feel really peaceful and at one with my natural surroundings when I'm fishing in the same way that I do with surfing
02:09It's just being a part of that and connecting with everything around myself and feeling
02:15Like I can carve out a space for my own peace and quiet
02:25Today we're heading to iron prior to Jake from a boat
02:29So you're driving a I am
02:32Be confident driving on the right-hand side of the road. Yes
02:36I will get health insurance
02:39Coming through
02:45I
02:53Have you feeling about
02:55Fishing for catfish today and buzzing. I've never fished for catfish before. Yeah, I've never ever interesting looking creatures
03:02Yeah, I hear that. They're spiky and they can hurt you. I think there's a technique there is attackers. Yeah, I'll hold them properly
03:09Yeah, yeah, don't know how yet
03:12Yeah, yeah, there's something about being on the water that's
03:16Really special about being over here because it's much harder at home. It's more complicated, isn't it?
03:21It's nice the simplicity of it here. And are you excited to hire a boat? Yeah and drive it yourself
03:27I mean, that's part of the fun. I think yeah, don't kick me overboard
03:38Hello
03:42Yeah, I am Dave I'm a blind angler and this is my guide dog Arby
03:50And my name is Rick I'm
03:52Local angler in the area been fishing terms for a lot of years and I have a real love for fishing today
03:57We are going to be out there fishing for channel catfish. Well, I've never caught a catfish
04:03Yeah, explain to me what we do with a catfish. Well catfish live on the bottom in deeper water
04:09Okay, so we will be going out into deeper water today probably 30 ish feet
04:15And when you catch one and you want to take it off you have to be very careful
04:19It's one dorsal fin and two pectoral fins have spines on them
04:23And if you get jabbed by those it'll be like a bee sting
04:28So you have to be just very
04:31Careful and handle them slowly. So Rick will show you guys how to handle a catfish. Yes, please
04:40I think quite a slimy fish. I know that's a weird question
04:45Slippery there are over 3,000 species of catfish in the world
04:50Ontario is home to six they get their name from their long prominent whiskers
04:56Catfish are freshwater fish that live in rivers lakes and streams
05:00Channel catfish typically grow 36 to 53 centimeters and weigh two to four pounds
05:06With the Ontario record being 38.5 pounds
05:12Catfish grow slowly and live up to 40 years
05:18Okay, well I think it's time right
05:22Yes, I'm gonna get my sea legs on I can't wait to see this marina
05:36You
05:39Tell us a little bit about where we are today and where we'll be fishing
05:43Well, we're in my hometown of Arnprior, Ontario
05:47Also known as Kitchissippi on unseeded Algonquin Territory
05:52Arnprior is where the Madagascar and Ottawa River meet
05:55The Ottawa River is over 1,200 kilometers long
05:58It originates up in northern Ontario northern Quebec and flows into the st
06:04Lawrence River by Montreal. Could you tell us a little bit about the setup we're gonna be using on our rods
06:10We mentioned we're gonna using jigs jigs coming in various different colors
06:15Different shapes and maybe what we're gonna be doing is we're just gonna be jigging it on bottom
06:19Contacting the bottom heavier to jig quicker. It gets down there and we're gonna put a small piece of worm on but you could use
06:25Minnow, you could use a leech. You could use a lot of different things and tippet and even the plastic lure
06:31In this case catfish like something that smells so they really are gonna be attracted to the worm and we're gonna catch it
06:38Then again, there's several styles from what you have, which has been eerie style jig
06:42Yeah, I have a little spinner jig here made by another company. You have again ones have ratlin eyes
06:48You see there are different sizes in terms of their weights as well
06:52And again colors and they always say with fishing lures the fishing lure catches the fisherman first before it catches the fish
07:01I had you know, why
07:04The key technique in jigging is if I'm over water, I would hold my rod out
07:10Undo your spool let it drop drop drop
07:14How do you know when you're on the bottom when you feel the slack in the line like this, you know, you're on bottom
07:19What do catfish eat in their sort of natural day?
07:23Catfish means almost anything that's on the bottom. Really? Yeah, so they'll eat small minnows. They'll eat crayfish
07:29Whatever they're large catfish are known to actually will eat a walleye will eat a
07:35Sizable perch will eat even a small pike. I was with the Ministry of Natural Resources and then one of the nets
07:40There's already any sunfish and then else perch because the catfish eat them all. Wow, you can see them in their belly
07:46So they're not fussy
07:48No
07:50Alrighty shall we get going? I think we're ready. We have the bait. We have the lines. We have the jigs
07:57Get in our boats and you guys can two of you will come with us and two will follow
08:02Yeah, and we have some spots picked out
08:06Hopefully we'll get some action
08:09So the main takeaway for what we need today is a medium or medium heavy fishing rod six six to seven six
08:16braided line
08:18Jigs worms or minnows and don't forget your lifejacket in the boat
08:26I
08:35Haven't driven a boat in ages SJ so hold on
08:56I
09:10Have you got the tea flask on here don't think so
09:19Sorry now that we're out in the water, how do we jig we're gonna vertically jig up and down here
09:24You just have to flip your bail
09:26Okay, and it can help by feeding aligned naturally or just pull out with your hand a bit
09:32Let it go to the bottom. You'll keep on watching your line till you become slack. Yeah, once it becomes slack
09:39Click over your bail. Okay reel up any slack line just slightly
09:43Okay
09:43And then just bounce this up about six inches put it back down
09:46You don't have to go about six inches. Keep it close to the bottom. These are bottom feeders. Yeah
09:50What's nice about it? You don't worry about casting
09:52You can keep on working that same spot and the way we're doing vertically jigging fish are moving around on bottom and they can
09:58Come to where you're at
10:00And you just know exactly when it hits the bottom a lot of time without even having to check there. Yes
10:05You just know how much it is. Yeah. Yeah
10:08Yeah, I know you're using braided lines of braided lines gonna give you a better feel for the bottom as well, right?
10:13Yeah, and I'm gonna catch a fish. Okay, just like that. So that's simply
10:19How jigging works I think I'm fish on oh, yeah
10:25So don't be told that you're just gonna pull it up
10:30Holy catfish
10:37God if that's what a small one fights like yes, we get a big one. That must be gonna get a five pounder
10:48Okay
10:54It's a triple header triple letter
11:02Rob is bending a little better. So I better stop here and bring
11:10Basically two different ways of holding a catfish one where you can bring the dorsals fin down or
11:15You have the opposite way with the mouth facing towards you and you have the dorsal fin pointed up and your fingers in behind
11:37Just keep the tension then keep on reeling it in
11:41Okay, yeah, I'm bringing up to you about a foot away from
11:47There's about a foot away you can net it I
11:51Sometimes grab underneath the belly like this. Yeah, like this anyway
11:54How long is that that and that's like it right?
11:56I bought dorsal fins anyway, it works for you
11:58And then just basically just pull it like that. So I have it how I can hold like this. I can hold it like this
12:04Yeah
12:06That's it. Those are what you're worried about
12:09Okay
12:15I could be out here all day
12:23Bring it up get it in the boat
12:25Oh
12:33Look at it different species of catfish. This is called the channel catfish. Oh guys
12:40Fish on
12:42nice catch
12:45Oh
12:52When this goes down, but this is to me the easiest way to hold it this is fine
12:57Fish the serrated edges will get caught in the net as well
13:07So relaxing out here
13:10It's
13:12Perfect
13:17It's just beautiful
13:19So guys, how did you end up meeting and becoming such a formidable fishing team? Holy catfish?
13:30We met the blind angler
13:36Maybe we'll answer it in a minute
13:39Well, I was at the blind anglers international tournament about I'd say 15 years ago Rick, yes
13:46We met and we got teamed up. I'm part of the organizing committee of this
13:52Tournament. Oh, yeah, so you actually help like organize it put it on
13:56Yeah
13:56like do you get new and sort of angle is joining the
14:00Club and stuff and and have some of them learn before they've lost their sight and some haven't
14:06Is it like is it a mix or people usually fished before like how does that sort of probably most have done some fishing
14:15Yeah, as people get more blind
14:19The blinder they get the harder it is to get out. Yeah fish
14:23So this tournament this blind angler tournament gives them a chance to get out in a safe environment with
14:30Professional fishermen so me and Vic have a nephew who's blind and we'd like to take him
14:36fishing with us like
14:38You know, like is there anything we could do that might make that experience a little bit easier for him
14:44Just make sure that he is well taken care of and he knows it. Mm-hmm. He's safe. Yeah, it's going to be guided
14:51well
14:52and
14:54He doesn't really have anything to worry about out there. Yeah, it's just going to be safe
14:58Love that
15:10After a doubt in the Sun we decided to check out a spot with shallower waters to see what would bite
15:15So for me Dave the pursuit of a fish is quite similar to like the pursuit of a wave in a way
15:24It's but it's the actual act of doing it. That is like satisfying for me
15:30So I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off me
15:34I feel like I've got a lot of weight on my shoulders and I feel like I've got a lot of weight on my shoulders
15:40Satisfying for me, so I feel like a huge weight has been lifted off me
15:45Whether that's the way the cold water makes me feel
15:48the satisfaction of the right
15:51Ingredient the right wind direction the right swell direction. What do you get from fishing?
15:57And that maybe helps you or makes you feel good over the years with my eye condition. I
16:04Had pretty normal vision as a kid growing up. I did all the sports and
16:10Activities as a sighted person
16:13but as I got older, I just
16:15Older and as my vision decreased. I I just started using my other senses more and more
16:21Yeah, my hearing and my sense of touch really comes in handy fishing fishing is one of those activities that
16:29that you don't really need your eyes to
16:34Take part in yeah, like I like to say the tug is the drug
16:38That keeps me coming back to fishing. Yeah, because you just don't know what's lurking under the water
16:45The other part is just being out here doing an activity like this and then having the conversation with other people
16:52You know
16:55Other other times you just wouldn't sit with someone for two or three hours chatting
17:00I actually love the social aspect of it, too
17:03You don't get those moments with your friends all the time and when you do get that fishing allows that and
17:12Like it's natural it's not like a rushed sort of that's what I like about it
17:17I like once you're there you're there for the day as well. I like that sort of aspect of it
17:22Life slows down. Yeah, it does you get to know someone a lot better
17:27And a slower pace, you know, you're not rushing those conversations
17:34Exactly. Yeah, unless the fish are biting crazy like
17:43After an incredible day catching more fish than I ever have in my life. We sadly had to head in and return the boats
17:57Yeah
18:14All right, join us I'll get together
18:20Average
18:23You worked good, whoo-hoo
18:28You
18:35Come on
18:42When you feel satisfied
18:44After a surf, I think it's more the other senses that give you that satisfaction
18:49It could be the feel of cold water against your skin and your face
18:53It could be the feeling of the wind against your skin as well
18:57The fear of like muscles, it's all of those other things that make it so satisfying
19:04Through being able to get better or learn something new gives me a lot of self-worth
19:11Actually a year ago. I couldn't tire that fishing not when I first started or I couldn't stand up on a wave
19:19It's like those little sort of achievements that are really really good for me
19:27I
19:30After a day on the water our cozy cabin was calling
19:38I love that photo. Oh, I'll be has tongue out. Look what sweet dog
19:46Next time on get hooked it's called fishing not catching but I am gonna catch if it's the last thing I do
19:51I'm actually really stoked to go in the weeds and
19:54Get stuck in them
19:58Luckily, we've got Petrie Island on the books with Frank
20:01That's the thing about fishing with these lot
20:04Haven't even packed the car up yet. And we've planned the next trip
20:10Next stop Petrie Island
