00:00Can I draw your attention to these shoes, he's been busy at the weekend hasn't he,
00:09look at them.
00:10You should have clean shoes on a Monday morning, there's no excuse.
00:14I suppose you go along the adage that you need to look at someone's shoes if you're
00:17doing a deal with them.
00:18If you've got to size them up, yeah look at their watch and their shoes.
00:21See if I met you for the first time I wouldn't trust him further than I could throw him judging
00:25by those shoes.
00:26I've got a watch.
00:27Yeah but you see you go down in my estimations because the watch is great, the shoes are
00:31terrible.
00:32Yeah, is that a Stolex?
00:34Right, moving on.
00:39We're back on the hunt for classic cars.
00:42Blimey, isn't that beautiful?
00:44Be they big, are the big green things for sale?
00:47I'm not sure about that.
00:48Which means they're not, okay.
00:51Small, that is a potential.
00:54Or somewhere in between.
00:55It's got no glass in it.
00:57It's got no bonnet and you like it.
00:58I do, yeah.
00:59We're going to buy them, sort them, put them through their paces and sell them for a tidy
01:10profit.
01:11This is Shed and Buried, Classic Cars.
01:21We're heading down to Devon in our classic Series 3 Land Rover.
01:27A lot of people say don't do long journeys for a Series 3.
01:32Yeah.
01:33But actually I quite enjoy it.
01:35I mean just in the sense that there's no way we're ever going to get done for speeding.
01:39Also, this bounces around a bit so I'm not that sure you're going to get much sleep either.
01:45I'm not going to nod off, I promise you.
01:47I'm not because look, I've got security here.
01:50You always do nod off though.
01:53We're going to visit our old mate Frank.
01:57For the last 20 years he's run his very own motoring museum but now he's retiring and
02:03selling up.
02:04Last time we bought a neon sign and some other ephemera but this time we want a car.
02:11We can't overlook a situation where he's got something like 60 cars and if we can help
02:20relieve him of something which helps in his retirement then happy days, man.
02:24Do you know what I mean?
02:25That's true, very true.
02:26But all in all, we're just going to have a great day.
02:29And besides that, the museum is built in an old former bus garage.
02:37And on that note, it's time to take another 40.
02:41Frank's magnificent motoring museum, here we come.
02:46How did it all start?
02:48How did you get involved right in the beginning?
02:51I've always been a workaholic and I've always had this affliction.
02:55And then this building came up in a derelict state in 2012.
02:59I took it on and worked for about a year, putting a new roof on it and we put a little
03:05bit of mezzanine around the two edges and we opened with about 60 exhibits in 2013.
03:11I've got to say, this place is fantastic.
03:14I'll tell you what, mate, it's so great to be back.
03:16But look, this time we are in the market, hopefully, for a four-wheeled means of conveyance.
03:23Yeah, there are plenty of them.
03:25You know the rules.
03:26We'll have a little rummage about and call you in with anything that we'd like to find out about.
03:30And then hopefully, at the end of it, we might just have a haggle.
03:33We might shake hands on something.
03:34Yeah, on a couple of items perhaps.
03:35Yeah, that could be good.
03:36Yeah, that would be great.
03:37Sounds a good way to go forward.
03:38Mate, so great to see you again.
03:39You're shaking hands already.
03:40Yeah, I know.
03:42It's just nice to see you, mate.
03:43What did we just buy?
03:44Yeah.
03:45What have we just bought?
03:46I think the whole thing.
03:47You bought everything.
03:48Yeah, that was a museum.
03:49You'd better shake it off.
03:50I have to go and get hold of me mortgage broker.
03:52Oh dear.
03:53But he doesn't take my call, I know for sure.
03:54No, it's all right, mate.
03:55Hey, look, Frank, we'll see you in a bit.
03:56All right.
03:57Lovely.
03:58All right.
03:59Thanks, lads.
04:00See you later.
04:01It's a real privilege to be here, surrounded by all these classic cars, with the possibility
04:08of buying one before anyone else.
04:12Frank's collection could be called the best of British, with Jaguar saloons, Morris vans,
04:19and Triumph sports cars.
04:21But the first thing we're drawn to is this Vauxhall Cresta from 1962.
04:29Now, if you remember the specials, that single ghost town, the driving around, being uplit
04:34in a car kind of thing.
04:35This is the Cresta.
04:36It's not the one, though, is it?
04:38I don't think it's the one, but it's this type.
04:41They just look so rock and roll, though, don't they?
04:48Released in 1957, the Cresta PA, to give it its full name, was a high-spec saloon car
04:54with all the trimmings and a top speed of 90 miles an hour.
05:00For its time, this was a massive car, with those fins on the back, the bench seats, it's
05:06everything that you want in a late-50s, early-60s car.
05:09Hey, look, I've got to tell you, that is amazing.
05:12Because of that whole Americana about it, what are prices like on these?
05:17They kind of always remain healthy, because, unfortunately, these things rot prodigiously.
05:23So there aren't many of them, so if people want one, they're fighting over them.
05:28Next door, there's a Morris 1100, more low-key, but equally characterful.
05:35Well, in a beige sort of way.
05:39I love it, mate.
05:40It's got the smell of an old Morris.
05:42Oh, my God, look what's in here.
05:44What have you got?
05:45Hang on, hang on.
05:46Oh, look.
05:51That is the 80s.
05:54Yeah, it is.
05:55Isn't it?
05:56It is.
05:57But never have two items been so incongruous.
06:00Because, look, a Ghetto Blaster and a Morris 1100.
06:04No, no, it's more than a Ghetto Blaster.
06:07It's a TV.
06:08Oh, gosh, so it is.
06:10Check that out.
06:11Hey?
06:12That's amazing.
06:13Oh, mate, that's just so much.
06:15How exciting.
06:16I'll beat you to it.
06:17Go on, then.
06:18All right.
06:21For something utterly different, on the other side of the shed,
06:24there's a car whose assorted, if incongruous, parts add up to a magnificent whole.
06:32Frank, Frank, Frank.
06:33Yes, young man.
06:34Just tell me about this.
06:35Oh, that doesn't happen very often, does it?
06:37Oh, no, no, well, I haven't been to Specsavers recently.
06:41Oh, good.
06:42Sorry.
06:43Right.
06:44What was I going to say?
06:45You want to know a little bit?
06:46Tell us about it.
06:47I can't tell you a huge amount about it.
06:48All right.
06:49It is a Bitsa.
06:50Yeah, OK.
06:51The chassis came from a Eagle RV from the 1970s.
06:59And then, at some point, someone has taken the original body off it
07:04and created this.
07:06Hot rod.
07:07Yeah.
07:08So using Ford Model T and Model A parts.
07:10Yeah.
07:11And what about the engine?
07:12Don't ask me to be too technical.
07:14No, I'm not.
07:15All I can just tell you is it's an Oldsmobile five litre V8.
07:19I reckon you'd want to hear it, wouldn't you?
07:21Yeah.
07:22Well, does it go?
07:23Do you want to pop in first?
07:24Go on, then.
07:25Go on, Fuzz, get in.
07:26OK.
07:27And then your starter is there.
07:28Oh, I can hear the fuel pump.
07:29Give it a couple of pumps.
07:40That.
07:41I have to tell you, that is the nicest V8 I've heard for a very long time.
07:44Yeah.
07:45Come on, Frank.
07:46We're just going to have a look upstairs.
07:47It does frighten some old ladies when it's coming towards them.
07:54Come on.
07:55Let's go up.
07:56Come on.
07:57Upstairs, Frank's got a great collection of motorbikes.
08:01And more importantly, an exquisite cluster of mini classics.
08:07We get a car, but we could have a motorcycle just thrown in.
08:10Yeah, I suppose so.
08:11But look at this row of cars.
08:16There's a whole squadron of miniature marvels,
08:19ranging from a Messerschmitt bubble car that's been in the wars.
08:24It's supposed to have a Perspex canopy, like a Perspex bubble.
08:30To a BMW Assetta.
08:34This was your first step, or many people's first step, into family motoring
08:39because you could fit two adults and a kiddie in there.
08:45And last but not least, a Bond bug.
08:48These were, in the early 1970s, the way to look great on three wheels.
08:57None of these quite take my fancy like the cars below.
09:01But before we get down to some haggling with Frank,
09:04tucked in a corner, I've noticed something.
09:07So look.
09:08Hold on.
09:09Right.
09:10That is a CH1 that needs a bit of work doing to it.
09:12Can you see?
09:13Yeah, I can.
09:15So there's plenty of trinkets we can throw into the deal.
09:18But which car are we going for?
09:21The hot rod needs some primping up, but the engine's fine.
09:25Sounded lovely.
09:26Yeah.
09:27It's well sorted.
09:28And I can guarantee, sir, that you'll fit into that, because I did.
09:32There was also that Vauxhall Cresta PA.
09:34Beautiful.
09:35Yeah.
09:36The Morris 1100.
09:38Fawlty Towers vibe.
09:39Yeah, yeah.
09:40Although Basil Fawlty, I think, did have the estate version.
09:43Also, the BMW Isetta.
09:45Yeah, could be.
09:46Let's go and see Frank.
09:47Come on.
09:54We should just try and get some prices, Frank.
09:56We can try.
09:57OK.
09:58Do you want to start?
09:59Because I really don't know.
10:00I'd like to start with the little Morris 1100.
10:03At auction, with that mileage, you're looking about eight.
10:09Hey, look.
10:10Just next to it, though, Frank.
10:11Yeah.
10:12That's a nice Vauxhall Cresta.
10:14You won't want to pay the money I paid for that.
10:16OK, good.
10:17Moving on.
10:18How much did you pay for it?
10:19It went up to about 18 grand on the hammer.
10:21Well, about 18 in total, I spent.
10:23Wow.
10:24Yeah.
10:25OK.
10:26That hot rod?
10:27I'd let it go for 10.
10:28You could try and twist me a little bit, but it won't be much.
10:31Yeah.
10:32There is a CH1 pump down the side there.
10:34Make me an offer.
10:35I'll make you an offer for the hot rod.
10:38Seven.
10:39No.
10:40Nowhere near.
10:42No.
10:54We're down in Devon with Frank on the hunt for a classic car.
10:58We found a fantastic hot rod.
11:01He wants 10 grand for it.
11:03We want to pay seven.
11:05Come on up a little bit, Henry.
11:07Come on.
11:08It's all about eight and a half.
11:12It's right in the middle.
11:13Nine would do it, but that would be it.
11:15That would be the bottom line on it.
11:17Nine?
11:18Mm.
11:19And the CH1 pump?
11:21As I keep saying to you, I've got to be able to make at least what I've paid for it.
11:28Right, mate.
11:29It's either shake your hand or get the vial in now.
11:31Yeah.
11:329,250.
11:33OK.
11:34Go on, then.
11:35Cheers, Frank.
11:36Cheers.
11:38Next day, back at the shed, we show Alan and Guy the goods.
11:44Now, I know what you're thinking.
11:46What do you reckon?
11:47Mate, can I just say?
11:48Yeah.
11:49I am very pleasantly surprised, because I panic a bit when you two go picking, because
11:54I think a tractor or a coach is going to appear.
11:57So this, for me, is an absolute result, because I think it's cool.
12:01And on initial inspection, it looks quite nicely put together.
12:06That's five litres of good old V8 engine.
12:09Oldsmobile.
12:10Can I make a suggestion?
12:12Yes.
12:13I think we should give it some gravitas.
12:16So it looks like a pre-war American racer.
12:23Look, like that.
12:26Yeah, yeah, that's nice.
12:27I like the red wheels.
12:29And then, most especially, that.
12:35Now, can I just say something here?
12:37I would mirror polish this, put a mascot on, satin black it, semi-circle screens, and the
12:44other glaring thing is maybe try and do something about the seats, because they look a bit bland.
12:48And I think it'll look banging.
12:50Do you think we need a number across the bonnet?
12:52I'd be more tempted to write something on the boot.
12:56As for the pump, it needs a repaint, and we'll see if we can remove the brass centre tube
13:01and send that off for polishing.
13:04That pump should go with this car.
13:06So it's got that slight steampunk tip to it.
13:09So it doesn't have to be standard?
13:10No, no, no, because we're not going to do any damage.
13:13We're just going to make it nice.
13:17Though our hot rod is really designed for one person, two max, before we get to work
13:22on the refurb.
13:23Time, I think, for a little test ride on my drive.
13:26In you go.
13:34Our rod sounds great, and because of the long wheelbase, it's surprisingly nice to drive.
13:42Listen to that!
13:43It's gorgeous!
13:44Holds like a train, doesn't it?
13:45It does, yeah.
13:49Considering this car has been sitting in a museum for years, it's amazing that it runs
13:54so smoothly.
13:55And when you put your foot down...
14:01Oh, my goodness!
14:03Oh, my God!
14:07My goal is to take it to a track in a couple of weeks.
14:10Now we know it runs perfectly, we can start the makeover.
14:15Well, I think that's a good test ride, isn't it?
14:17That's fantastic.
14:18Tea and medals.
14:22After lunch, work begins on the primpage.
14:27First task, remove the ugly windscreen.
14:33I think this comes out.
14:34You pull that out, and then you can get the glass out.
14:37Do you think?
14:38Maybe.
14:41Sounds easy.
14:42But though you can get to the nuts underneath the screen, the bolts that hold everything
14:46in place are not accessible from above.
14:50Is there some way of getting this out?
14:56If only.
14:58Whoever installed the screen put the frame in first, and then glued in the glass covering
15:03the bolts.
15:07That's not going to be good with the glass.
15:09I'm not going to hit the glass, it's to hit the bolt from underneath, if I was going to
15:12hit it.
15:13But gently, Al.
15:14Yeah.
15:15Just go out, and I've got to go back in again.
15:16That's all right.
15:17That's all right.
15:18There you go.
15:19You are the eel.
15:20They try tapping, levering, and removing the protective seals, but they still can't get
15:29at the bolts.
15:31Only solution is a drastic one.
15:35There it is.
15:36Right.
15:37It's decision time.
15:38Yeah.
15:39The general consensus of opinion is, we have ten plates for the glass.
15:43Can we chip the glass to get the bolt out?
15:46Would you like to do it?
15:47Do you want a smashing time?
15:50First, the right side.
15:53It was a gentle tap.
15:54It's there.
15:55Don't.
15:56Just mind yourself.
16:00No.
16:01That's enough.
16:02No.
16:03Stop.
16:04I'm quite enjoying it.
16:05Then the left side.
16:08It's brutal, but effective.
16:11Because it's your money, we thought we'd better ask before we did it.
16:14Well, no, no.
16:15You're right.
16:17It's a big shame, though, isn't it?
16:18I mean...
16:19It is a shame, but we'd be here for two days getting that off.
16:23I think we should keep the glass.
16:26OK.
16:27There we go.
16:28Look at that.
16:29Careful, Al.
16:30I don't want it to break.
16:32After that, it's plain sailing.
16:33The grill comes off no problem.
16:36All right.
16:37Here we go.
16:38Gently as he does it.
16:39Lovely.
16:40There we go.
16:41So, we need a little mascotti here.
16:44Biscotti.
16:45Yes.
16:46OK.
16:47How cool is that, man?
16:49Next, we move inside to start work on the pump.
16:55So, what we need to do, don't we, we need to break this,
16:58so we can get this cylinder out to get that polished.
17:02So, what we're going to do, we're going to crack these loose,
17:05then we're going to lay it down,
17:07and then we're going to tap these with a hammer
17:09to try and break the seal on the tube,
17:11because this will be stuck fast.
17:13You won't be able to just pull it off with the nuts on.
17:15Sounds easy again,
17:16but like removing the screen on the hot rod, it ain't.
17:23Look, this is definitely moving.
17:25You're all right, Mover.
17:28Our goal is to remove the centre tube
17:30and send it off for polishing
17:32without breaking the glass on the dial
17:34or doing any other damage.
17:37Isn't that going to do the threads in?
17:40It needs all hands to the pump.
17:43There we go, now the studs are stuck in.
17:46It's clear.
17:48But after a few more taps and half an hour of labour,
17:51the tube is finally off.
17:54Oh, there we are.
17:55Beautiful, boys, well done.
17:58Revealing the pump's piston below.
18:01That is lovely.
18:03Now, what we're going to do is,
18:05we're going to take the tube out,
18:07that is lovely.
18:10We'll get this and the nozzle, yeah?
18:13Yeah, polished.
18:14Off to Propite, then we'll prep this for paint.
18:17OK, cool.
18:20Next day, we start the repaint.
18:24The wheels have been sent out to be professionally powder-coated,
18:27but the main body of the car is going to be sprayed in-house.
18:31Yikes!
18:33OK, so basically, what we're going to do on my ride out
18:35is we're going to use this abrasive stuff
18:37to just basically make the surface
18:41more available for the matte black to stick properly.
18:45Yeah, if you do it in a nice, neat manner as well,
18:47it should look good.
18:48Yes.
18:49OK, so it looks as though you two have started.
18:51Well, yeah, you're talking as normal.
18:53I think the dog might need...
18:55She looks as though she might need a wee, actually.
18:59I'd love to help, but it's a real responsibility, being a pet owner.
19:04While Alan and Skid get on with it,
19:06over in Banbury, our wheels have arrived at the powder-coaters
19:10to be repainted.
19:12First things first, Tom removes the tyres
19:15and then takes the wheels into the shock-blasting chamber.
19:18He togs up in protective clothing
19:21and blasts them with thousands of tiny particles of steel
19:24that will strip off all the gold paint.
19:27It's a specialist process,
19:29but gets everything off very, very quickly.
19:34For the bodywork, we're not going the whole hog.
19:37Instead, the idea is to rough up or linish the surface
19:41to make it more grippy, and then rattle-can it matte black.
19:47Better late than never,
19:49Fuzz turns up to help with the final bit of prep
19:52and inadvertently causes a bit of trouble.
19:56Can I ask a serious question?
19:58What?
19:59What colour have you decided to paint it?
20:02Matte black.
20:03Matte black?
20:04Yeah.
20:05OK.
20:06Looks pretty good like that, doesn't it?
20:07I think it looks great like this.
20:08Yeah, same here.
20:09But their jury's out with them lot.
20:10If this was even all over, I might go for it.
20:13But I think matte black, I can understand.
20:16This, to me, is just horrible.
20:18I think it'd look nice if it was even,
20:20but I must admit, you need a quick dusting of satin black or matte black.
20:23I personally believe we should just give it a go, see what it looks like.
20:28Back in Banbury, Tom and his crew are getting ready for the repaint.
20:32They've actually cleaned it really well.
20:34It's actually quite a straight wheel as well,
20:36so it should look nice once they're powdered.
20:38Nice and fresh.
20:41Though they've been thoroughly stripped,
20:43before the next stage, Luke gives them an additional rubdown with sandpaper.
20:49So he's just going to prep the faces lightly,
20:51just knock down some of the profile.
20:53It gives a much nicer finish at the end.
20:56While the wheels head for the oven to be warmed up,
21:00Back at Coal Central, I'm releasing my inner Leonardo.
21:06Over the years, I've rattle-canned everything,
21:08from a JCB digger to a dumper truck.
21:11The key, as ever, is to use a long and even sweeping action
21:15and go for multiple light coats.
21:19Have you done all the wheel arch?
21:21No, not yet.
21:22OK.
21:23Having an audience, though, is a challenge.
21:26Can I just say that it's a bit odd
21:28that I'm this side, right, of the stable door,
21:31and you lot are over there.
21:33Well, you're the only one with a face mask.
21:35Yeah, that's right.
21:36We do have others.
21:38If we all have a go at a panel each, none of it will match.
21:41If your painting's dodgy,
21:43at least it'll be the same over the whole vehicle.
21:46When a vehicle is being painted,
21:48it's not the same as if you were painting a car.
21:51It's not the same as if you were painting a car.
21:54When a vehicle is being painted, it's normally by one artisan,
21:57and one artisan only,
21:59so that they know where they've been and they've got their eye in.
22:02Hang on, chasing the wet line.
22:04Yes, exactly.
22:05And that today is you chasing the wet line.
22:08Do you know what? I'm absolutely enraptured, shall I tell you why?
22:11Go on.
22:12Well, I've been compared to an artisan.
22:19Luke, thankfully, doesn't have to put up with any abuse.
22:24Powder coating is an entirely different process.
22:27Instead of liquid paint, he's spraying on thousands
22:30of microscopically small pigment particles,
22:34which stick to the metal because they're electrostatically charged.
22:38It's more expensive than conventional spraying,
22:41but perfect for items like wheels that are going to get a lot of abuse.
22:46The colour is Rubino Red, a rich burgundy shade
22:50that'll look great next to my matte black bodywork.
22:54Which I'm very pleased to say, I've just finished painting.
22:58Well, I'm sorry, I don't think that looks too bad.
23:01I think you should just let it dry.
23:03Let that go off now and then give it another go.
23:05I think my work here is done.
23:11Over in Banbury, the finished wheels have now been baked in the oven
23:15for over 20 minutes to give the powder coat a hard, long-lasting finish.
23:20Wow, they've come out really well.
23:22Really freshened them up.
23:24Hopefully the guys will be happy.
23:27So the wheels are great, but when it dries,
23:30will my paint job cut the mustard?
23:32And will the other accoutrement turn up in time to go racing?
23:50Next day, back at the shed.
23:52It's colder than a parking attendant's heart,
23:55but we've got plenty to do.
23:58Can I draw your attention to these?
24:01That's much nicer.
24:02What do you think?
24:03Much better than that huge screen.
24:05We're going to put the wheels on.
24:07Yes.
24:08What else are we doing?
24:09Grill the mascot.
24:10Can I show you? Where's the mascot?
24:12On there.
24:13I think he's quite funky.
24:15He's funny, isn't he?
24:16He's great, yeah.
24:17He's riding a missile.
24:20Getting the old screen out took longer than we thought,
24:23but getting the new one in takes even longer.
24:28First, there's a lot of taping up and measuring.
24:31Then Alan drills into the fibreglass bonnet
24:34to make holes for the fixing bolts.
24:37It's a beautiful thing, baby.
24:40Before taking another deep dive under the dashboard
24:43to attach the nuts.
24:45Very awesome.
24:46Are you alive?
24:47Just about, yeah.
24:49Next, we repeat the process to attach a new rear-view mirror.
24:54What do you think?
24:55Oh, yeah.
24:56That's awesome, isn't it?
24:57Yeah, we're rocking, man.
25:01While Alan and Skid attach the mascot to the radiator.
25:08This is going to look great.
25:10I retrieve our wheels, which are courier-made.
25:13This is going to look great.
25:15I retrieve our wheels, which a courier has just delivered.
25:20Look at that.
25:21Hey?
25:22Yeah, lovely.
25:23Don't you think they're lovely?
25:24Yes.
25:25The red?
25:26Perfect colour.
25:27Red's perfect in that black.
25:28The wheels, we think, came off a tractor,
25:30but they look great all the same.
25:33I do feel a bit of a supervisor.
25:35Now, you're the checker, and I'm the checker of the checker.
25:40Oh, yes, baby.
25:43Check that out.
25:45That?
25:46Is that far enough?
25:48Stop there.
25:49What do you think, mate?
25:50Well, I mean, I think we're halfway there, aren't we?
25:53We are.
25:54The screens are grazing.
25:55Oh, boys.
25:56Happy days.
25:57It's looking fantastic.
26:00The next item to refit to our hot rod is the bonnet.
26:04Right now, it's over with Gary at Pro Polishers.
26:08That's aluminium.
26:09Very thin.
26:10So I've got to be very careful how I polish it, really,
26:13because if you press too hard on it, you dent it,
26:15which we don't want to do.
26:19Gary's weapon of choice is a handheld mop.
26:22There are no dents or serious damage,
26:24but there's a layer of oxidisation to be stripped and polished off.
26:30Do this first.
26:31This is the first process.
26:32And then the second process will be a brush and mop.
26:35So the main thing is to make the customer happy.
26:39If the customer's happy, we're happy.
26:43Back at the shed,
26:44Skid's also got his work cut out on the petrol pump.
26:49As ever, when there's dirty work to do, Henry's not around.
26:53So he's asked me to prep this,
26:55and he promises me he's going to be here to rattle can it.
27:01The pump's in a much worse state than the bonnet,
27:04covered in nasty green paint
27:06that he has to wire brush and scrape off
27:08in order to prep it for the next stage.
27:11The main cylinder has been sent over to Pro Polishers with the bonnet,
27:15and it's the next job on Gary's to-do list.
27:18He too is no fan of the green.
27:21I just can't believe why people would paint brass.
27:25But we're going to get it to its natural beauty.
27:30Because it's smaller and lighter than the bonnet,
27:33he uses a stationary mop to strip off the paint.
27:37Within five minutes, Gary's starting to resemble the Incredible Hulk.
27:42You know you have to wear a mask, don't you?
27:48While Gary moves on to the brass nozzle,
27:52Skid does the final prep on the pump
27:56before the rattle can cowboy rides back into town.
28:03So all we need to do is to get that cylinder back from Pro Po,
28:07recombobulate, ready for sale, baby.
28:13Two days later, the paint's dry,
28:15everything is back from the polishers,
28:17and we are talking hair restoration.
28:22How many times do you wash your hair a week?
28:25Every second day.
28:28Every day for me. There's no point in asking you.
28:32How many times?
28:35I'm not entering in this conversation.
28:37Why? You never wash yours, do you?
28:39Not often.
28:40And also if I wash it, it goes like that.
28:42I know, I remember. Back in the day.
28:44It looks like a static attack.
28:46Yeah, it does.
28:48Shall we try and attack this? Just put it on?
28:50Yeah, sure.
28:52At least mine's not machine washable.
28:55There we go.
28:56Oh, mate, look at that. That's beautiful.
28:59That is very lovely.
29:00Now, shall we just put that thing on top now?
29:02I think so, yeah.
29:03No, we've got to put the studs in.
29:04All right, put the studs in.
29:05Come on then, put the studs in.
29:07All right.
29:11The next half an hour is a symphony of nuts going on.
29:17Masking tape coming off.
29:19And jaws opening in adulation.
29:24Look at it.
29:26Until our pump is complete.
29:30We spent about 80 quid polishing this,
29:33and it cost us 250 in the deal, didn't it, with the hot rod?
29:36Yeah.
29:37And I reckon that, all day long, is worth a grand.
29:43After a quick spot of lunch, we move on to the car.
29:47With its mascot and Rubino red wheels, it already looks amazing,
29:51but just needs a few final touches.
29:54Starting with a Mexican roll mat.
29:57It only costs 40 quid,
29:59but will make a real difference to the seat.
30:02It's taking longer to put this rug in
30:04than it took me to re-spray the whole body.
30:07But that's because we're doing this with a little bit more finesse.
30:10We had to take the exhaust off for the repaint,
30:13but it's great to have it back.
30:16Oh, man, this thing is fantastic.
30:20But the piece de resistance is the polished bonnet.
30:25Now, look, the spike goes in there, Al.
30:27There's a hole at the front.
30:29Oh, yeah.
30:31Hang on, get that in light. There we go, it's in.
30:33There you are.
30:34Holy moly.
30:36That's moly fantastic.
30:39I mean, God bless the person who built it.
30:41We've just added some nuances, eh?
30:43That's right. Just give it a little zhuzh.
30:46Now, zhuzhing-wise, we do have Pete the signwriter coming up tomorrow.
30:50Yeah.
30:51So, what about doing some little, do you think, bit of painting on now?
30:56Definitely, just to break it up a bit.
31:02Next day, he arrives and, assisted by Skid, starts work.
31:09That goes about like that.
31:13The top one's parallel, isn't it?
31:15Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:16This is the bottom fork?
31:17Yeah, yeah, yeah.
31:18Traditionally, Hot Rods have been known for elaborate paint jobs.
31:22We're not aiming for anything too intrusive,
31:25but I'm hoping that Pete will be able to add a bit of extra class.
31:29This is now this bit here.
31:31Yes, I'm with you.
31:33As ever, it's all in the prep.
31:35Pete sketches it out by eye with a chinagraph pencil.
31:40And only when he's happy does he lay down any paint.
31:45I'm going to put it on with, like, a dry brush
31:49because I want the paint to look worn.
31:52I want the lettering to look like it's been on there for 50 years.
31:57Oldsmobile was once one of America's most recognised brands.
32:02This lettering dates from the interwar years
32:05when Oldsmobile led the US with its engineering and marketing.
32:10Guy, what do you think?
32:12I think that's fantastic. It's perfect.
32:14It's in keeping with the vehicle. Now on to the V8.
32:21The V8 logo is an extra detail Skid came up with.
32:25And to further enhance the design, Pete adds a drop shadow to the edges
32:31before moving on to his own little extra.
32:34Some filigree coach lining on the headlights.
32:39After adding a final touch of red to the bomb under Mr Coyote, it's done.
32:49Finished, Henry. Feast your eyes.
32:52I don't quite know where to look. That is incredible.
32:56And do you like our take on the V8? Yes, I love it.
32:59And then Pete has done a final touch of the sort of coach lines on the headlamps,
33:04which is really hot rod. Oh, mate, this really sets it off.
33:07And I don't think it needs a big number or anything on the side.
33:10I think that is subtle and lovely. Oh, mate.
33:13Peter, you're a legend. Thank you, mate.
33:16This is fantastic. God, I can't believe that. What?
33:21I can see I've missed a bit right there. Can you see that, Guy?
33:25You did duct it off the invoice, Pete. Yeah.
33:29So Pete's paint job's terrific.
33:32Next we'll see if it races as good as it looks.
33:37HE ROARS
33:50Six weeks ago, we bought a classic hot rod from a museum in Devon.
33:569.250. Go on, then. Cheers, mate.
34:00It ran perfectly, but it needed some love, so we painted it.
34:05That looks semi-professional.
34:08Polished it. Printed it. And prettified it.
34:13That is incredible.
34:18Now, finally, it's finished and poised to fulfil its destiny as a straight-line racer.
34:25Can I just draw your attention to the gloriousness of our hot rod Oldsmobile V8, hey?
34:33Don't you love it? Yeah, it's beautiful. I absolutely love it.
34:36Now, can I also draw your attention to 88?
34:4388 is an old friend of ours.
34:46We restored it last year and sold it to a mate.
34:50But he's loaned it back for today's outing.
34:55That's certainly a good-looking duo of hot rods there.
34:59I think we should take both of these and do a kind of grease lightning hot rod blast, hey?
35:07A little duel between the two of them. What do you reckon?
35:10Absolutely. Yeah, that would be fun.
35:17When John Travolta said he's got chills and they were multiplying,
35:21he didn't mean he was driving to Turwestern Airport on a freezing January day.
35:27But it's hard not to be excited as we close in on the runway, today's racetrack.
35:35So, I reckon we're going to smoke, Alan and Fuzz.
35:37I reckon we're in the quicker vehicle. What do you reckon, mate?
35:40I think so, just purely because of cubic capacity.
35:45Let's not play fair. Let's play dirty.
35:48Just look at that pair. They are a pair of rascals.
35:57Okay, so I've just been thinking on the way up what the rules of engagement should be.
36:02Go on, then.
36:03All right?
36:04Yeah, come on, then.
36:05I think that is probably going to be quicker than that, right?
36:09Yeah.
36:10But if we...
36:12You stay in your one.
36:14Yeah.
36:15We'll stay in this one.
36:16Yeah.
36:17And we've got to go down the runway.
36:19Yeah.
36:20Turn around at the bottom, come back to here.
36:23Right.
36:24Yeah.
36:25Where we swap over cars.
36:27Right.
36:28So, is each run timed or...
36:31What?
36:32Because when we swap over cars, we're going to have to wait for the other one to turn up.
36:36So, we may as well just go down at the same speed, have a trundle.
36:39That's true.
36:40No, don't be like that.
36:41Okay.
36:42It's taking you all the way here to think that up.
36:44Brilliant.
36:45How about we get in the cars and we go down...
36:49Yeah.
36:50And we come back...
36:51Yeah.
36:52And we change over drivers.
36:53And then go all the way back down and all the way back up again.
36:55I think that's quite fair, actually, and I'll tell you why.
36:57Why?
36:58Because once you're behind that wheel, because I'm going to let you go first...
37:01Yeah.
37:02You extricating yourself from behind the wheel...
37:04Yes.
37:05And swapping...
37:06Yes.
37:07It's going to take a lot longer than them.
37:08Are we doing a Le Mans start, so we have to...
37:12Yes.
37:13Run to get in?
37:14We are.
37:15May the best team win.
37:16Yeah, that's probably neither of us.
37:18Come on then, let's get our helmets on.
37:20Over to Ed, our impromptu race marshal.
37:26You hold the flag.
37:27You hold it, right?
37:28And you're going to go like that, right?
37:31Shall I give you a demo?
37:33So, look, you go...
37:35On your marks, get set...
37:37Go!
37:38Come on!
37:40Who fastened this up?
37:41Oi!
37:42Come here!
37:45Oh, come on.
37:46Come on.
37:48Come on.
37:50Uh-oh, I was aiming for Greece, not the wacky races.
37:55Quick, Ed, come on.
37:57Has he got a start button?
37:58I'll follow it up.
38:05Oh!
38:12Oh, he's far away.
38:18Our 307 cubic inch engine is about twice the size of Fuzzy's,
38:23but his car is light and very manoeuvrable.
38:31They've got a bigger engine, they've got more weight.
38:33Yeah, they have.
38:35And I hope slightly less skill.
38:42Can you see them anywhere else?
38:44No, not at all.
38:45Right, let's go around.
38:46Lean over.
38:48Come on, skid.
38:49We might go on the grass.
38:50No, you're all right, you're all right.
38:53There, there, there, he's there, he's there.
38:54Right, go, come on, go.
38:55Oh, no!
38:56Look, he's cut short!
38:57Go.
38:58He's cut short!
38:59What a treat!
39:01Oh, no, he's catching!
39:07Come on, son!
39:09We might have to nobble them while they're changing over.
39:14Right.
39:16Get ready.
39:17I'm ready.
39:19Right.
39:21Hang on.
39:22Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa.
39:24You're up first.
39:25Just...
39:28Come on, now, get in.
39:30Your upside rear wheel's loose.
39:32What?
39:33It's loose.
39:34Really?
39:35Honestly, give it a go.
39:36I can't.
39:37Really?
39:38Honestly, give it a...
39:39Honestly, just give it a wobble.
39:42What?
39:43What's up?
39:44The offside rear wheel's loose.
39:47He's a liar!
39:50He's a liar.
39:51He's talking rubbish.
39:54The final lap.
39:59I'm a bit worried that skid, who rides a Bentley and drives a one-litre Kia,
40:04ain't quite Lewis Hamilton.
40:06But our new hot rod would make even Miss Marple drive quickly.
40:12We're neck and neck.
40:15He's checking his wheel's not falling off.
40:22We could be on the grass.
40:24Right, leaning.
40:25As much as I can.
40:28Forget Lauda versus Hunt, this is a real grunge match.
40:33Hey!
40:35Look.
40:36Come on, mate.
40:37We're going to be...
40:38Oh, God, he's going fast.
40:42One minute.
40:45It might just have the edge on us, Al.
40:47Yeah, I think so.
40:49That's it.
40:50Now we've got to get out of the vehicle.
40:51Oh, yes.
40:52I think we...
40:53Well, we went all the way to the end.
40:55We didn't cut any corners.
40:56Oh, Christ.
40:58That's it.
40:59You're doing great.
41:00Well, we've got to get out as well.
41:01Well, we've got to get out as well, haven't we?
41:03That's it.
41:04Now we've got to get out.
41:08We've got to get out.
41:09Go.
41:11We've got to get out.
41:12We've got to get out.
41:14Come on.
41:18That's us.
41:19Who won?
41:20Who won?
41:21We were out.
41:22You haven't even switched your car off.
41:24Switch the car off.
41:25You don't have to switch it off.
41:26Yeah, you do.
41:27Don't you?
41:28I just have to get out.
41:31You didn't switch your car off.
41:33There was no mention of switching off.
41:35Can I just say something as well?
41:37The idea that that five litre is quicker than that 3.5 litre V8?
41:44I think this is quicker.
41:45I think this is faster.
41:46Isn't it?
41:47They're both quicker than I thought, though.
41:49Both of them are quick.
41:50It might be the gearing.
41:51Yours is geared different, maybe.
41:52Oh, maybe.
41:53I don't know.
41:54But all I do know is that they are very much on a par.
41:57What a laugh, man.
41:58That was great.
41:59It was fantastic, yeah.
42:00All we need to do is find out how much this is worse now.
42:02Happy days, boys.
42:03Coffee?
42:04Yes.
42:05I think so.
42:06Let's have another.
42:10Next day, we do find out when my favourite auto dealer, Chopper Roy, comes over for a look-see.
42:17Look, this is how good it is, Roy.
42:22Gives you the grin factor, doesn't it?
42:25Sounds gorgeous.
42:26That is sweet, isn't it?
42:28It just all works, mate.
42:30It does, yeah.
42:32Big question how much, isn't it, really?
42:34It's all that's left.
42:3814 to 15.
42:39Don't haggle.
42:40Shake his hand.
42:41OK, well, he's not going to buy it, but I'll shake his hand anyway.
42:43Oh.
42:44Unless you do want to buy it.
42:45I might know somewhere for it.
42:46I reckon we spent a grand on it.
42:48And I bought the car and the petrol pump for 9,250.
42:54But that is worth 1,250.
42:57Right, OK.
42:58So there's a grand in that.
42:59You did well there.
43:00Plus, we spent a grand on this, though, I reckon.
43:03Which brings it up to 10, because it was nine.
43:05Yeah, OK.
43:06So that's...
43:07You're doing well.
43:08For once, you've bought sensibly.
43:09So we're making five grand, potentially.
43:11So there is a little bit of leeway for you to go and get a nice little tickle out of it.
43:15Yeah, we could do.
43:16Quite rightly so.
43:17Yeah, I mean, look, if you have a one-er on it, grand in the hand.
43:20That'd be lovely.
43:21Yeah.
43:22We could go four grand at us.
43:24Grand for you, Chopsicle.
43:26And if you take a while to sell it, which you won't, you can go driving in it on a nice sunny day,
43:30which we haven't been able to do.
43:31Yeah.
43:32No, it's lovely.
43:33I could run around in that quite happily.
43:34Oh, good.
43:35I think we should have a cup of tea, then.
43:36Yeah, come on, then.
43:37That's been brilliant.
43:38Come on.
43:39You're making, though.
43:40Off you go.
43:41Yeah, come on.
43:42Don't use your arse for toys.
43:43I like my ginger nut as well.
43:44I want a biscuit.
