00:00As President Trump and I agreed last week, he and the Prime Minister of Canada will sit down immediately following the election to find areas of common ground and agreement in a new economic and security partnership.
00:14I told the President that I will be working hard for the next month to earn the right to represent Canada in those discussions to get the best deal for Canada under the new U.S. approach.
00:25At the same time, Canada must be looking elsewhere to expand our trade, to build our economy and to protect our sovereignty.
00:35Canada is ready to take a leadership role in building a coalition of like-minded countries who share our values.
00:43We believe in international cooperation. We believe in the free and open exchange of goods, services and ideas.
00:52And if the United States no longer wants to lead, Canada will.
00:59Canada is strengthening our trading relationships with reliable partners.
01:05Earlier this week, I spoke to the Mexican President, Mrs. Scheinbaum.
01:12I just spoke to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz.
01:18I had many conversations with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.
01:25And in my first week in office, I met with the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, and French President Emmanuel Macron.
01:37We are all opposed to the U.S. government's approach.
01:41And we are all in favour of free and fair trade.
01:48My government understands that Canadians hurt by the unjustified tariffs will need our support.
01:55And to our workers producing sustainable, high-quality lumber in Smithers, Prince George and Elmsdale,
02:01to our workers extracting oil and gas around Fort McMurray and in northeastern B.C.,
02:08to our workers at the steel mills in Hamilton, Sault Ste. Marie and La Vosge,
02:17to our workers at auto assembly plants in Windsor, Ingersoll and Oakville,
02:22to all our workers who might be worried about their next paycheck and their futures,
02:27the federal government will do everything in our power to protect you and your careers.
02:34In this new world, we have to look out for ourselves.
02:39And because we are Canadian, we will always look out for each other.
04:21Fighting back against U.S. tariffs and protecting our workers are our most immediate priorities.
04:29But they are not sufficient.
04:32Our task as a nation in the coming weeks and months and years is to think bigger and to act bigger.
04:39We can draw strength right now from each other.
04:45From Canadians who are supporting local businesses, Canadians who are buying Canadian,
04:51Canadians who are changing their travel plans, and Canadians who are helping each other as neighbours.
04:57We are powerful when we act together.
05:01From providing refuge to stranded passengers in Gander to fighting forest fires in California,
05:07Canadians have done extraordinary things for Americans when they needed it most.
05:13Now, more than ever, we need to do extraordinary things for ourselves.
05:19We will need to do things previously thought impossible at speeds we haven't seen in generations.
05:27Breaking down internal trade barriers so that we can have one Canadian economy, not 13.
05:34Making Canada more productive and competitive.
05:38Building things in this country again.
05:41Millions more homes.
05:43Building clean and conventional energy.
05:45Building more public transport.
05:47More mines.
05:48More assembly lines.
05:50Building new trade corridors with reliable partners.
05:53Building a Canada that works for everyone.
05:57A Canada that everyone can afford.
06:00A Canada worthy of its people.
06:04Last week, I met a teacher from Glen Williams Public School in Georgetown, Ontario.
06:11And she told me about a routine assessment, routine assignment rather, that she had given to her 9 and 10-year-olds.
06:21And the children were asked to describe their dreams for Canada.
06:25So some kids wrote about a country free of poverty.
06:30Others dreamt of clean air and water or a place where everyone enjoyed equal rights, dignity, and respect.
06:37These are what we all want for ourselves and for each other.
06:41But many, many also wrote about tariffs and threats to our sovereignty.
06:51Words that I hadn't met at that age.
06:56And I'm going to quote one which is representative.
07:01I dream of a safe, a kind, and a clean Canada.
07:08A Canada that is not the U.S.
07:16Our children should be able to dream about a positive future.
07:22Not worry about an economic crisis.
07:53Given the perspective damage to their own people, the American administration should eventually change course.
08:03But I don't want to give false hope.
08:06The President believes that what he is doing is best for the American economy.
08:11He believes that it's best for American workers.
08:14And although their policy will hurt American families, until that pain becomes impossible to ignore,
08:21I do not believe they will change direction.
08:25So the road to that point may indeed be long.
08:29And it will be hard on Canadians, just as it will be on other partners of the United States.
08:35It will require us to make difficult choices.
08:38It will require sacrifices.
08:42I have no doubt we will rise to the challenge because that's who we are as Canadians.
08:48We have done hard, seemingly impossible things throughout our history.
08:53We conquered the unconquerable at Vimy and Juneau Beach.
09:12We created public Medicare.
09:14We confronted our own past with Indigenous peoples.
09:17We answered the call to defeat fascism.
09:20We know we are not always perfect, but we always strive to be good.
09:26We do not do things because they're easy, but because they are right.
09:31We will rise to meet this challenge, and we will emerge stronger.
09:38So to those kids at Glenn Williams Public School, don't worry.
09:46With your spirit, with that of your parents, their friends,
09:51and people like them across this great country, all pulling for Canada,
09:56we will build an even better Canada for your future.
10:01Because that's who we are.
10:03We are Canada.
10:05Canada strong.
10:07Canada fort.
10:08Thank you very much. Merci.
10:10I'll be pleased to take your questions.
