00:00So, I understand that not to be all balled up in one agreement, separate agreements,
00:04but in the future negotiation then, I want to understand what you take from President
00:11Trump's 12% reciprocal tariff that he has hanging over Canada, even if he lifts the
00:20border tariffs you call unjustified.
00:22So I think there are several things, if I may, and it's hard to predict all elements
00:29of this, but there's certain sectors in the North American economy, the Canadian US economy,
00:38that fundamentally rely on the integration in those sectors.
00:42There's no better example of this than in autos, where it literally has been built up
00:47over my entire lifetime, and that the competitive threat in North America is from Asia, not
00:57within North America, and it will become our judgment, and the judgment I would say
01:02of virtually everybody who works in the auto industry, virtually everyone, not everyone,
01:09not the UAW apparently, but I think they're going to find out, that this is going to damage
01:16the US auto industry as well as the Canadian auto industry, and it's going to damage the
01:21industry relative to competition from Asia.
01:25So when there's that discussion, the question, part of the discussion is going to be, how
01:29do we put back together elements of that integration, and if it's not going to come, how are we
01:34going to act in Canada, and we're going to do this, elements of this anyways, if my government
01:40is elected, which is to build a true made in Canada strategy that makes us much more
01:47resilient with the US.
01:50So Tonda, I can't prewire all those discussions, but what I know is that trying to have a discussion,
01:58given the scale of ambition of the United States, given all the measures they've taken,
02:02not just against Canada, but against the whole world, that we are not going to make progress
02:06if we try to focus on only one issue.
02:10We need to reset the overall relationship, we need to set the boundaries around that,
02:15where we're going to work together, re-establish confidence, first and foremost for Canadian
02:20workers and their families, so that they know where their careers are, where their jobs
02:25are, and then more broadly for investors in business.
02:30Okay?
02:32Good morning, Prime Minister.
02:33Gillian Piper with Global News.
02:36Are you planning to have another phone call with President Donald Trump to discuss these
02:42tariffs?
02:43If it's appropriate, we will.
02:44We agreed that we would, when we last spoke, that we would talk as needed over the coming
02:51weeks.
02:53So it may happen.
02:55There's not one scheduled, and as I said, I'll just reiterate, when we spoke, I did
03:01advise the President that we would be retaliating against the auto tariffs.
03:06We were going to wait to see what happened with these reciprocal tariffs that were announced
03:10yesterday.
03:12We have taken a very focused, calibrated response, balanced response, one that creates incentives
03:17for the automakers.
03:20So as appropriate, we will speak.
03:22I'm very conscious, we're very conscious, that there are additional measures likely
03:28to come in other sectors, including forest products, pharmaceuticals, and others.
