00:00EU chief Ursula von der Leyen says the EU is preparing for further countermeasures against
00:07US tariffs.
00:09US President Donald Trump has declared a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries
00:16and even higher tariff rates on dozens of nations.
00:22At least four people have died following a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city
00:26of Krivi Rih.
00:30European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen says the EU is preparing for further
00:36countermeasures against the 20% tariff on European goods announced by US President Donald
00:43Trump.
00:44We are prepared to respond.
00:47We are already finalising the first package of countermeasures in response to tariffs
00:52on steel and we are now preparing for further countermeasures to protect our interests and
01:00our businesses if negotiations fail.
01:05On Wednesday, the US President announced a minimum 10% tariff on all countries, with
01:11the EU added to a list of 60 worst offenders, facing a higher tailored rate of 20%.
01:19He also announced a 25% tariff on all automobiles made outside the US to be implemented with
01:26immediate effect.
01:29Sweden and Ireland have already issued statements saying they regret the additional tariffs,
01:35which will come into force next Wednesday.
01:38However, Irish Deputy Leader Simon Harris urged the bloc to remain calm and measured
01:44in its response.
01:46The statement this morning by European Commission Chief Ursula von der Leyen clearly sought
01:52to reassure Europeans that the EU is ready to protect itself from Washington's decision
01:57to impose tariffs.
01:59Speaking from Samarkand, Uzbekistan, where she will later attend the first ever EU-Central
02:04Asia Summit, von der Leyen said Europe has everything it needs to make it through this
02:08storm and is now preparing further measures.
02:11But she nonetheless made it clear that Europe wants a negotiated solution because it stands
02:17for fair and rules-based trade, which will be one of the main messages in her talks with
02:22Central Asian leaders today and tomorrow.
02:25Alice Taidi, in Samarkand, for Euronews.
02:31My fellow Americans, this is Liberation Day.
02:34US President Donald Trump has declared a 10% baseline tax on imports from all countries,
02:40and higher tariff rates on dozens of nations that run trade surpluses with the United States.
02:46Imports on goods from the European Union are facing a 20% tax, Trump announced as he held
02:51up a chart at the White House.
02:54European Union, they're very tough, very, very tough traders.
02:58You know, you think of European Union, very friendly.
03:02They rip us off.
03:03It's so sad to see.
03:05It's so pathetic.
03:0639%, we're going to charge them 20%.
03:09So we're charging them essentially half.
03:12Trump promised Americans that factory jobs will return back to the United States, but
03:17his policies risk a sudden economic slowdown as consumers and businesses could face sharp
03:22price hikes.
03:23For decades, our country has been looted, pillaged, raped, and plundered by nations
03:28near and far, both friend and foe alike.
03:32American steel workers, auto workers, farmers, and skilled craftsmen, we have a lot of them
03:37here with us today.
03:39They really suffered gravely.
03:41They watched in anguish as foreign leaders have stolen our jobs, foreign cheaters have
03:47ransacked our factories, and foreign scavengers have torn apart our once beautiful American
03:53dream.
03:54Trump's announcement threatens to upend much of the architecture of the global economy
03:59and trigger broader trade wars.
04:02Long-time trade partners, including the EU, have already hit back at previously announced
04:06tariffs on steel and aluminium.
04:10Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen is visiting Greenland for a three-day trip aimed
04:17at building trust and cooperation with the territory's newly elected officials.
04:23Frederiksen announced the plans after U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance accused Denmark
04:28of under-investing in the territory as he visited a U.S. military base there last week.
04:34Upon arrival, she refuted U.S. President Donald Trump's claim on Greenland and vowed
04:39to support the Greenlandic people.
04:41I would like to say to everyone in Greenland, I have only one wish, and that is to do everything
04:46I can to take care of this wonderful country and support Greenland in a really, really
04:52difficult situation.
04:55Frederiksen is meeting the incoming Greenlandic leader, Jens Frederik Nielsen, who said in
05:01recent days that he welcomes the visit and that Greenland would resist any U.S. attempt
05:06to annex the territory.
05:12Following years of reforms and European assistance, the five Central Asian countries are embarking
05:18on a strategic pivot towards Europe.
05:21The EU is seeking reliable partners in the currently rapidly changing geopolitical reality,
05:27for political and also economic reasons such as trade, investment and energy.
05:31In an exclusive interview to Euronews, Uzbekistan's President Shavkat Mirzoyev, the host of the
05:37gathering, calls the summit a historic chance for the region.
05:41He said that over the past seven years, the trade turnover between Central Asian countries
05:45and the EU has quadrupled, amounting to 54 billion euros.
05:50Over 1,000 companies with European capital are already working in Uzbekistan with the
05:56joint investment project portfolio of 30 billion euros.
06:01It is truly a historic moment for Central Asia.
06:05We've been independent for 34 years.
06:08We celebrate this as a new step, as a milestone in our development.
06:13You know, in today's changing world, you know, where the whole current world order is being
06:23shaken with these great tectonic shifts in geopolitics.
06:30We need reliable partners.
06:32A major area of cooperation lies in the ongoing project to create a green strategic corridor
06:38through the Caspian and Black Seas to Europe.
06:41The implementation of this initiative will lay a solid foundation for what both sides
06:45are looking for, mutually beneficial energy connectivity.
06:53At least four people have died following a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city
06:57of Krivyi Rih.
06:59The head of the city's military administration said a large fire broke out and several apartment
07:04buildings were damaged.
07:07Fourteen people were injured in the strike, according to the regional governor, including
07:11an eight-year-old boy and a six-year-old girl.
07:15Krivyi Rih is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and lies around 70 kilometres
07:21from the nearest front line.
07:26Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has announced Israel is establishing a new security corridor
07:31across the Gaza Strip, which he named the Morak Corridor.
07:34The term Morak Corridor refers to a Jewish settlement that once stood between Rafa and
07:39Khan Yunus.
07:40Netanyahu warned that pressure will intensify if Israel demands are not met.
07:45Last night, in the Gaza Strip, we passed a corridor.
07:49The IDF is capturing areas, attacking the terrorists, and we are doing another thing.
07:57We are capturing the Morak Corridor.
08:00This will be the second Philadelphia.
08:03Another Philadelphia.
08:05Because we are now leaving the Strip and we are adding pressure, step by step, so that
08:11they will give us our capture.
08:13And as long as they don't give it to us, the pressure will continue until they give it to us.
08:18This follows last month's retaking of the Net Zarem corridor in northern Gaza, which
08:22splits northern and southern Gaza.
08:24Defense Minister Israel Katz earlier said the IDF is expanding its operations to seize
08:29large areas in Gaza, aiming to crush militants and expand Israeli security zones.
08:35Overnight strikes killed over 40 people, including nearly a dozen children, according to
08:40hospital officials.
08:43Hamas still holds 59 captives, with 24 believed alive after previous deals freed others.
08:49The Hostage Families Forum expressed horror at Katz's announcement, urging the Israeli
08:53government to prioritize a deal for the hostages' release.
09:02Legendary Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti's tax evasion trial opened at a Spanish court.
09:09Ancelotti, who maintains his innocence, is accused of using shell companies to hide his
09:15true earnings and allegedly defrauded the state of 1 million euros in 2014 and 2015.
09:23The 65-year-old is one of football's most successful managers ever, winning the Champions
09:29League with his teams a record five times.
09:33It is one of the most comprehensive exhibitions ever put together on Michelangelo Merisi,
09:40better known as Caravaggio.
09:43The exhibition features 24 works, including loads from international collections, some
09:49of which are being displayed in Italy for the first time.
09:53Held at Palazzo Barberini in Rome, a city dear to the artist, it coincides with the
09:58Jubilee year and offers a rare opportunity to learn about the latest discoveries regarding Caravaggio.
10:28Caravaggio's realistic style is the reason behind the exhibition's popularity, attracting
10:44visitors from around the world.
10:59They're very dramatic, very intense.
11:02The figures are gathered closely together, the light and the dark and so on.
11:06So I think they're very accessible.
11:28The exhibition runs until the 6th of July and with the next few weeks already sold out,
11:33those who want to see it will need to hurry to secure their tickets.
