What Would a Canceled Gambit movie with Channing Tatum be Like?
Announced in 2014, Gambit spent years in development limbo, with several directors and writers attached to the project. Finally, Channing Tatum himself and producer Reid Carolin started writing the script, trying to ensure that the film got off the ground. But all the film's chances were destroyed after Disney's purchase of Fox.
In an interview with Variety, Tatum and Carolin opened up and talked about what we would see in their film. The idea would be to have something similar to Deadpool, but being a romantic comedy. “We wanted to make a hero romantic comedy. The message is that the only thing harder than saving the world is making a relationship work,” Carolin said.
Tatum praised the film that never happened, speaking with great affection about the character and praising the costumes that Gambit would wear:
“They would be very flamboyant, they were the coolest person ever, they could do anything. Most heroes have utilitarian costumes, like Batman's belt. But Gambit only dressed in the most stylish clothes, straight from the Paris catwalks. His clothes were the coolest because he was passionate about fashion.”
Speaking about the cancellation of the film, which was already in an advanced state of development, Carolin said:
“We came very close. We cast, opened a production company and were heading to New Orleans for filming. But then Disney acquired the X-Men from Fox, and I think they needed to remake the characters from scratch.”
Tatum, who was very attached to Gambit, was the one who felt the impact of this cancellation the most, going so far as to say that he could no longer watch the MCU films:
“I was traumatized when Gambit was cancelled. I stopped my Marvel addiction, and since then I haven't been able to watch any of their films. I loved that character, it was so sad. It was like losing a friend because I was so prepared to play him.”
In the interview, the actor revealed that he still dreamed of playing Gambit and, in Deadpool & Wolverine, that dream finally came true. Taking everyone by surprise, Tatum appears as a mutant, featuring a strong accent and using his explosive powers in a beautiful fight sequence.
