00:00Hey baby, let's go out there like a bunch of crazy dogs!
00:03What the hell's going on out here?
00:05No idea what's going on, but I am excited!
00:07Every pick, every play, every game-changing moment.
00:13Unbelievable!
00:15This is You Better You Bet.
00:18Brought to you by BetMGM.
00:20The sportsbook born in Vegas on the BetMGM Network.
00:26Welcome back. It is hour number three.
00:30Of You Better You Bet, presented by BetMGM right here on the BetMGM Network.
00:35Femi Abebefe, hanging out with P.J. Glasser.
00:37P.J. filling in for Nick Costos.
00:39We had a fun first couple of hours.
00:41We have a fun second half of the show on deck for you guys as well.
00:46We'll get into a PGA Championship update at the bottom of the hour in 40 minutes
00:49with our guy Tyler Morales, our golf aficionado here on You Better You Bet.
00:54Also, one hour away from the NBC Sports Now Power Hour over on Peacock.
00:59We'll break down the Knicks-Celtics Game 6, Western Conference Finals hypotheticals,
01:05T-Wolves Nuggets, T-Wolves Thunder.
01:07What would we like? What would we want to bet on in those series?
01:09That's coming up at 6 o'clock.
01:11Nick Friedle, our Odyssey NBA insider, will join us as well at 6.20
01:15to break down the NBA playoffs, as well as what's going to happen with Giannis Antetokounmpo this summer.
01:20We'll talk Giannis and playoffs coming up with Nick Friedle at 6.20.
01:24But, PJ, we begin this third hour with breaking news just one minute ago out of the National Football League.
01:32It is done.
01:33It is signed, sealed, and delivered.
01:35The 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy have agreed to terms on a five-year, $265 million extension.
01:43According to NFL Network's Tom Pellicero, Purdy will get $181 million in total guarantees,
01:49including $165 million in the first three new years of the deal that will run through 2030.
01:56Brock Purdy is paid.
01:58We felt like this was going to happen.
02:00It always felt like they were going to go down this road.
02:02The Niners have loved Brock Purdy.
02:04He's been really good for them.
02:05But now, my opinion, as a better, this kind of takes away their cheat code that they've had for the last couple of years
02:12of having a productive quarterback on literally the cheapest contract a drafted player could have as Mr. Irrelevant.
02:19He's now one of the highest-paid players in the NFL.
02:22Won't affect them this year, but I think down the line, this will definitely affect the 49ers
02:26and their team-building strategy as it feels like right now, 2025,
02:30probably the all-in season for the Niners before this ban breaks up due to this Brock Purdy contract.
02:36Your initial thoughts, PJ, on the Niners inking Purdy to a $265 million contract?
02:42I mean, my initial thoughts are that Brock Purdy's getting paid more than Lamar Jackson.
02:46So, you know, that's some kind of contract right there.
02:50That's a good thought.
02:51I'm happy.
02:52I'm happy as a Ravens fan.
02:54But, yeah, that's – look, I mean, in the NFL,
02:56we know when you're dealing with quarterbacks like Brock Purdy,
03:00who's not a consensus top five, obviously, maybe even top ten quarterback in the NFL,
03:05these are the decisions that these organizations have to make.
03:08Do you want to pay a guy who's been productive, who's been a very good player for you,
03:13who's not one of the top-tier players, do you pay him all this money?
03:17Your Cowboys had to make that decision with Dak.
03:19We saw Jacksonville have to do that a couple years ago with Trevor Lawrence.
03:23So, the 49ers have decided that Purdy's their guy.
03:27And if there was a team to make this decision,
03:29you'd think a team coached by Kyle Shanahan would be a pretty good team, right?
03:34A guy who works with them every day to know if this is the guy that should be our quarterback moving forward.
03:40I just – the contract is insane, Femi.
03:43But, again, like that's what the quarterback market demands nowadays.
03:47You bring up a great point, though.
03:49We know in the NFL the time to strike is with – as a team is when your quarterback's on a rookie deal, right?
03:56That's why we've seen Washington make these moves this offseason to get Laramie Tunstall
04:01and get Deebo Samuel and get all these guys to help build around Jaden Daniels
04:04before they have to give him a boatload of money.
04:08So, now we'll see where San Francisco goes from here.
04:11They had to get rid of a bunch of defensive guys in the offseason.
04:15They had to get rid of some of their offensive players as well.
04:17So, we'll see what happens with Purdy.
04:20I mean, we know when it comes to San Francisco, when everything's right and all their guys are healthy
04:26and he's got Trent Williams playing left tackle and he's got CMC out there
04:30and Ayuk's good to go and Kittle's healthy and he's got all his guys, Purdy's a good player.
04:35But I know your problem, Femi, with Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys,
04:39is when you're getting paid that amount of money,
04:41you shouldn't depend on a certain guy to be hurt to depend on you still producing for the team.
04:48And that, to me, is what it's like with Brock Purdy.
04:51Like, when everything's good, he's good.
04:53But if guys are injured, when you're getting paid that amount of money,
04:57you better be able to elevate the other guys around you to still play at a high level.
05:01So, it's a tough spot when you're a team like this.
05:04But, yeah, I think, I don't know if I would have made this move if I was San Francisco, to be honest.
05:11For this amount of money, I get you don't want to be one of these teams that doesn't have a quarterback.
05:17But, again, you have to ask yourself, if you're going to pay a quarterback that amount of money
05:22and guys get hurt, can he still elevate others around him?
05:26I don't know if Purdy can do that.
05:28Yeah, fear is what drives these negotiations.
05:30I think it's fear of not having a quarterback, fear of not having a competent quarterback.
05:35Because teams, like, every team in the NFL, damn near, except for maybe the Green Bay Packers.
05:39Like, it's been a while since they've had a bad quarterback, quarterback,
05:43and then they'll go from Favre to Rodgers to now Jordan Love.
05:45But, like, for most teams, everyone has kind of experienced what it's like to not have a guy.
05:50It sucks. It stinks.
05:52You have no chance, and the offense can't function.
05:54But, that does not excuse, like, just paying all this money to a guy that's solid, you know?
06:02Like, I don't even know if Brock Purdy is, like, a great quarterback or even a very good quarterback.
06:06I'd say Brock Purdy is, like, a solid quarterback.
06:09Just like how Tua Tungabailoa, a solid quarterback.
06:12Jared Goff, a solid quarterback.
06:14And that's the range where Purdy's being paid.
06:17So, I guess if you're Purdy's agent, and I would be arguing the same thing if I was that guy,
06:21I'd be like, yeah, like, Tua, like, Trevor Lawrence, those guys have never had seasons like how Brock Purdy has had.
06:27Two years ago, Brock Purdy was in the MVP conversation until he kind of wet the bed against your team on Monday night on Christmas against the Ravens.
06:34Like, he might have won MVP if not for that game.
06:36Like, that's how good of a season he was having.
06:39So, at least he has shown that he can do that.
06:41But, once again, my whole thing with these quarterbacks getting paid that money is all those guys around him helped in that as well.
06:48And not saying that the quarterback must do everything, because every quarterback gets help.
06:52You mean Patrick Mahomes has Travis Kelsey, although Travis Kelsey's now declining,
06:57which is why their offense is probably declining a little bit despite having the best quarterback in the league.
07:00But, like, every quarterback needs some kind of help.
07:03It's just that, can they elevate the other guys?
07:06Like, can you actually build a roster if you're going to pay them?
07:10Dak Prescott, highest quarterback in the league right now, $60 million.
07:13Like, has he lived up to that contract?
07:15No.
07:16Like, he's got only, like, a few playoff wins.
07:18Like, it's not really living up to $60 million.
07:21Joe Burrow, yeah, he's been to the Super Bowl.
07:22He's been to an AFC title game.
07:24I'd feel comfortable paying Joe Burrow $55 million.
07:26Josh Allen, he just won the MVP.
07:28I'd feel pretty comfortable paying Josh Allen $55 million.
07:32In fact, he won the MVP in the season after trading Stefan Diggs.
07:35Like, that's what we're talking about when we say elevate the guys around you.
07:39Josh Allen did that last year.
07:40Jordan Love, let's see if he can do that.
07:42But, like, Lawrence, Tua, Goff, and now Brock Purdy, I don't know, man.
07:47Like, those guys, to me, feel like they're replaceable.
07:50Like, it does.
07:51Like, just to be honest.
07:52Like, we just saw a season.
07:54If your infrastructure is right, if your situation is good, you can get Sam Darnold to lead you to 14 wins.
08:00We literally just saw it.
08:02And for some reason, these teams, the fear of not having a guy just overwhelms them to such a degree to where if you're good enough to just complete passes from the pocket, buddy, you're getting paid as long as you stay healthy.
08:15And Brock Purdy is now the guy that's getting paid.
08:17But you know what?
08:18This season, like, the Niners are in line for a bounce back.
08:22Now, going forward, kind of think they're screwed.
08:24Like, if this is what you're doing, you're kind of screwed.
08:26You're not going to be a Super Bowl contender beyond 2025, but at least in 2025, from a win total standpoint, when you look at their schedule, like, I do think the Niners have a good chance to win the NFC West.
08:36And I'm saying that as Mr. Ramley, captain of that family.
08:40Like, I think the Niners are actually a really, really good bet to make, and there's a reason why they're the favorites to win the division.
08:46Yeah, and look, you bring up a great point.
08:49These teams, certainly, they fear not having a quarterback.
08:52And I think especially San Francisco, Femi, because do you remember that time period?
08:56When they had kind of a Brock Purdy type, right?
08:59A Jimmy Garoppolo, who was a solid quarterback.
09:02He wasn't great.
09:03But when he was in there, they won games.
09:05Jimmy gets hurt.
09:06Went to the Super Bowl.
09:08Went to the Super Bowl, exactly.
09:09And then Jimmy gets hurt, and you would think, oh, it's Kyle Shanahan.
09:12They got all these weapons.
09:13They'll make it work.
09:14It doesn't matter if it's Nick Mullins or it's whoever.
09:17They'll find ways to win games.
09:19And they were awful.
09:20It didn't matter who it was.
09:22If Garoppolo wasn't under center, they couldn't win games.
09:25So I think John Lynch, I think Shanahan, I think this front office, they're like, look,
09:30if you gave him truth serum, they'd tell you Brock Purdy probably isn't a top 10 quarterback.
09:34But they win games with him, and they have been through it together when their quarterback
09:39has gotten hurt and they weren't able to win that I think they were comfortable enough
09:44to give Purdy all this money.
09:46So, yeah, I mean, look, great for Brock Purdy.
09:49An incredible story.
09:50The fact that, you know, he was Mr. Irrelevant, and now he's one of the highest paid players
09:54in the NFL.
09:56But, yeah, Femi, I mean, this is my thing, man.
09:59Now you're paying him all this money.
10:01We know San Francisco is a veteran team.
10:03They're in win-now mode.
10:05And he's just shown us throughout his career.
10:08Like, if McCaffrey's not healthy, and he's going to have Ayuk out for a majority of the
10:13year, and they're going to rely on some younger receivers this year, and even though Trent
10:17Williams is really good, he's not getting any younger, and he's probably going to miss
10:20some games this season, what are they going to look?
10:23So they do have a favorable schedule, for sure, one of the easiest schedules in the NFL.
10:28You would hope that last year, this past year, was kind of their year where they caught
10:33the injury bug, right, and maybe this year they'll get a little better luck in that term.
10:39But, yeah, it's tough, man, when you're in these spots with these kind of quarterbacks
10:44that you know, like, aren't top-five-level QBs, but you don't want to be in a scenario
10:48where you just, like, are searching for a QB consistently every single year, right?
10:53Like, ask the Steelers, ask the Saints right now how they feel.
10:56Ask the Giants how they feel about their current situations.
10:59Yeah, so Brock Purdy is now being paid, like, a top-ten quarterback.
11:03Like, do you actually think he is?
11:05Like, we can go through the list of the teams, and we can say, like, is Brock Purdy
11:08better than this quarterback?
11:09So the Detroit Lions, they had the best record in the NFC last year.
11:12Like, do you think Brock Purdy is better than Jared Goff, yes or no?
11:18Ooh, that's a good question.
11:21We're not off to a great start if you have to hesitate.
11:23The Niners just gave this to $265 million, and I'm not even saying that you're wrong
11:26to hesitate, but that's what we're dealing with.
11:29And they just paid this dude $265 million.
11:31And I ask you, is he better than Jared Goff?
11:33You're like, ooh, let's see.
11:34I don't know.
11:35I think I'd take Goff, Femi, to be honest with you.
11:40We're not off to it.
11:41Like, right there.
11:42So you think, I think he's better than Goff.
11:44Like, I think Goff is like a, obviously Ben Johnson helped out quite a bit, but that
11:48offensive line was, like, top tier.
11:50So I think Purdy could do exactly what Goff did in that Detroit Lions system.
11:53Agreed.
11:53So I will say he's better than Goff, but it's not by much.
11:56Do you think Brock Purdy is better than Jalen Hurts?
11:58What about that one?
12:00No, I do not.
12:01Again, I think Jalen helps from the fact that he plays behind a great O-line and a great
12:06offense.
12:06But I'd rather take Hurts, I think.
12:09Yeah.
12:09I'd rather have Jalen Hurts as well than Brock Purdy.
12:11What about Baker Mayfield?
12:12Do you think Brock Purdy is better than Baker Mayfield?
12:14I do.
12:15I do.
12:15And I know Baker's had an incredible last couple of years.
12:18He's also had two really good coordinators in Canales, and now Liam Cohen's off to Jacksonville.
12:24He's got a good receiving core, too, right?
12:25So Baker's had some help in Tampa Bay.
12:28I would still take Purdy, though, at this point.
12:31But again, that's another close one.
12:34Yeah.
12:34I would lean Purdy as well.
12:35I think they're kind of similar to me, but Purdy's younger.
12:38I'd lean Purdy, but I think it's a close conversation.
12:40What about the Matthew Stafford?
12:42Is Purdy better than Stafford?
12:43No.
12:44No.
12:44Stafford, even at this point in his career, would still take Stafford.
12:48Femi, I'm going through it.
12:49I think there are only six quarterbacks I would be comfortable paying this contract to of five years, 265.
12:55There'd only be six quarterbacks.
12:56It would be Mahomes.
12:57Who are they?
12:58It would be Mahomes, Allen, Lamar Jackson, Joe Burrow, C.J. Stroud, and Jaden Daniels.
13:04Those would be the only six.
13:05I wouldn't pay Hurts that money.
13:07I wouldn't pay Herbert that money.
13:08I wouldn't pay Purdy.
13:09I wouldn't pay Dak.
13:11I wouldn't pay any of these other guys.
13:12Those would be the only six quarterbacks where, if this alert popped up and it was so-and-so
13:17is getting five years, 265, I could say, okay, I think that's a good deal.
13:22Outside of those six, I think that it's an overpay for all these quarterbacks.
13:28And those are the six guys that we all, I think, consensus opinion, they elevate their teams.
13:33Lamar Jackson elevates the Ravens.
13:35Josh Allen elevates the Buffalo Bills.
13:37Patrick Mahomes, I mean, he elevates the entire NFL.
13:40He is the NFL.
13:41He elevates that.
13:42Like, C.J. Stroud, even him.
13:44Like, Houston Texans were terrible.
13:46They had a top five pick.
13:47They get Stroud.
13:48They won the division back-to-back seasons.
13:49He has elevated that franchise.
13:52Jaden Daniels, like, probably the prime guy, the prime example.
13:56Commanders are horrendous.
13:57They'll go to the NFC title game in one year with Jaden Daniels.
13:59Like, those are the guys.
14:01Brock Purdy is not that.
14:02If Brock Purdy is drafted by, like, the Cleveland Browns, like, he's probably fighting for his
14:08NFL life right now.
14:10You know, like, I'm assuming that the cream will rise.
14:13Like, he has talent.
14:14And I don't want this to be all, like, Brock Purdy is terrible.
14:17No.
14:17Like, I think he's a solid quarterback.
14:19And he is one of the great stories in the NFL to go from Mr. Revell to be a competent
14:24starter.
14:24Like, that's a really good story.
14:26But we're just dealing with the facts here.
14:28They are now paying him among the elite players.
14:30And he is not that.
14:32That's the problem for the 49ers.
14:33And, like, from a betting standpoint, as bettors, we always talk about value.
14:37Where's the value?
14:38You don't want to be buying high and selling low.
14:40You want to be buying low and selling high.
14:42You want value.
14:43I don't think the Niners are getting value here.
14:46What they're getting is comfort.
14:47What they're getting is, oh, we like Brock and we can put our head in our pillow at night
14:51knowing that we have a quarterback who can run our system.
14:54Well, I'll tell the 49ers, good luck.
14:56That's what I'll say.
14:57Good luck with that one.
14:582026 and beyond paying this dude this kind of money.
15:02I know the cap is going up.
15:03The TV money is kicking in and all this stuff.
15:05Maybe five years from now, this is just, like, a cheap quarterback deal.
15:09But right now, in 2025 and 2026, like, I'm not really there.
15:13I'm not there with this team.
15:14I don't think it's a good decision.
15:15But shout out to Brock Purdy and his agent for getting paid because I think any one of
15:19us would have signed that deal.
15:21And, Brock Purdy, yes, you are the guy.
15:24$265 million.
15:25Hell of a day for him.
15:26Hell of a weekend for him.
15:27But as bettors, nah, it doesn't really move me.
15:30And, in fact, going forward, after this season, I want to be out on the San Francisco 49ers.
15:35We'll talk some more NFL headlines on the other side.
15:38Had to get to the breaking news.
15:39Purdy extended, signed, sealed, delivered in the Bay Area.
15:42You Better You Bet continues on the other side.
15:45We'll be right back with You Better You Bet, presented by BetMGM, the sportsbook born in Vegas.
