00:02:42new mexico but this evening it's boxing not hoops that takes center stage and the spotlight falls
00:02:48on master showman and hometown hero johnny tapia as the curtain is about to go up on his showtime
00:02:54debut it's all part of a world championship doubleheader in our co-feature francis lorenz
00:02:59budwani defends his wba junior middleweight title against number one rated guillermo jones of
00:03:05panama and in our main event the wbo ibf junior bantamweight championship the homecoming johnny
00:03:11tapia returns to albuquerque on his 31st birthday as he takes on former flyweight champion rodolfo
00:03:17blanco of colombia an all-time state record crowd for boxing expected 10 to 13 000 the fans are ready
00:03:29with their johnny signs they've got a six-man mentality in support of their main man johnny
00:03:34tapia and they are accustomed to winning here at the pit the lobos are the nation's 11th ranked
00:03:39college basketball team a staggering 40 wins in a row in this building and tonight johnny tapia
00:03:45looks to extend his hometown streak to a lucky 13 here on friday the 13th that would be a pretty good
00:03:52birthday present for him hello again everybody i'm steve albert glad you could be with us friday the 13th
00:03:59valentine's day eve johnny tapia's birthday he gets to do his thing right here in his own backyard
00:04:05before his adoring fans quite a setting tapia clearly the most prominent name of the junior
00:04:10bantamweight or 115 pound division these days the other champions virtually unknown outside of boxing
00:04:16circles now tapia has fought at this weight his entire career and now at age 31 may be time to
00:04:21move up to fight more recognizable names a rematch with another albuquerque favorite danny romero is
00:04:27also a possibility tapia out pointed his arch rival last july and what many thought was the fight of the
00:04:32year for 1997 but first things first as former ivf flyweight champ rodolfo blanco looks to crash the
00:04:39birthday party of johnny tapia a daunting task here in very hostile territory make no
00:04:45mistake as you can hear in the background this is tapia country with that let me bring on my
00:04:50ringside partners first of all bobby says where would you rank johnny tapia among the current world
00:04:55champions you know steve johnny tapia is a very good world champion one of the very few that has unified
00:05:00some of the belts he has two of those world championships but it's almost impossible to
00:05:04gauge just how he would stack up against some of the other world champions because there's a lack of
00:05:08talent at 115 pounds now when he beat danny romero many people thought johnny tapia did indeed come of age
00:05:13but i think he has to go up to 115 118 122 pounds we're going to see the very best of johnny tapia
00:05:19okay let's turn to our other partner now the fight doctor ferdy pacheco and
00:05:23ferdy what kind of a threat does rodolfo blanco pose to johnny tapia keep in mind he is a former
00:05:28world champion while he is a former world champion remember he's lost four out of the last six fights
00:05:33that hardly qualifies him as a fearful opponent what it does qualify him is he's got a strong chin he
00:05:39fights very hard what he is is a great opponent for tapia to show real good before his hometown
00:05:45crowd this birthday celebration will be great if tapia can look good and this is the guy that can
00:05:51make tapia look great yeah so blanco has to contend not only with johnny tapia but with this crowd this

00:06:32danny romero you won that fight in 1997 he's out here in the crowd tonight how much has that
00:06:39changed your career and validated you as a boxer well you know first of all i give a lot of thanks
00:06:43to jesus but also you know put danny romero in the picture he's a good guy he's a good champion of his
00:06:49own and he wants to fight me one more time we're going to let up and always take care of that your
00:06:54thoughts right now you you get nervous or is this the kind of become old hat the more you do it
00:06:58the more you're at home well the more i do it the better i get and you know it's such a beautiful
00:07:03thing to come back to your hometown and and people love you and people think of you but i got to give

00:07:18get ready for our first bout of the evening from the pit at albuquerque laurent but juani of france
00:07:22making his second defense of the wba junior middleweight championship against number one
00:07:26rated guillermo jones of panama here's the challenger long and lanky guillermo jones despite his wiry
00:07:33physique he has knockout power i've seen tapes of him where he has utterly pulverized opponents but
00:07:39i'm just not certain about his level of competition with all of his bouts taking
00:07:43place in panama and venezuela no recognizable opponents difficult to verify ferdy he is still
00:07:50he is still a mystery and tonight should be a truer test of his abilities yeah well the ability is
00:07:56going to come when you look at a guy at six foot five who's got a tremendous jam and a hard right hand
00:08:01and a big knockout punch that is a tremendous challenge tonight i look for this to be a very even fight
00:08:06for the waft of the air of an upset floating around here above 13 000 people he stored all the way to
00:08:13number one in the rankings and he will take on the champion tonight laurent quadruani won the title in
00:08:1996 with a fifth round ko of julio cesar vasquez in france his first world title shot his only defense a
00:08:26decision over former world junior middleweight champ carl daniels last year those the biggest names on his
00:08:32ledger uh more recently won an eight round decision over kevin pompey in december a non-title affair
00:08:38currently on a 12-fight win streak and bobby chez the champion seemed almost blasé about jones when
00:08:43we met with him yesterday could he be underestimating the number one contender you know steve obviously
00:08:48i don't know what's going through his mind but sometimes that does happen a man doesn't stack up
00:08:52on paper as jones does not to the likes of a 20 and maybe he's looking past him but i'll tell you what
00:08:58he's got a great chin a good durable body he hits hard with both hands it's going to be a terrific
00:09:02fight i don't think the champion's looking past him and if he is not by much all right bobby let's
00:09:07check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape the champion budwani is six years older than jones
00:09:13could factor in a four inch height advantage for the towering jones which one he listed at six feet
00:09:19he might be under both under the weight limit and a big five and a half inch reach advantage for jones the
00:09:25challenger at seventy six and a half key rules for this championship fight no standing eight count
00:09:31no three knockdown rule a fighter cannot be saved by the bell in any round now if the fight is stopped

00:11:06world i introduced you first the challenger on my left fighting out of the blue corner wearing the
00:11:13colors of panama white trunks with red and blue trim and joining us from cologne panama he weighed in at
00:11:22153 pounds with a fine record of 22 wins one loss he has 19 big wins coming by way of knockout here is

00:12:11losses 31 wins coming by way of knockout and tonight ladies and gentlemen he is making the second

00:13:25well budwani uh will look to get inside of the long jab of guillermo jones who has power 12 of his 19
00:13:31knockouts in the first round his 16 ko's in two rounds or less averages only two and a half rounds per
00:13:37fight he told us he'll work from the outside against the champion budwani and here we go round one
00:13:43scheduled for 12 for the wba junior middleweight championship and the most immediate thing you see
00:13:48is with the statistics bar a junk extremely tall compared to the guy he's got the wingspan of an
00:13:54eagle and not a condo the size of that guy you know he's real tall especially for that weight he is
00:13:59just tall there are many many heavyweights aren't quite that tall he has bulked up somewhat but he really
00:14:05was a rail in his earlier fights six foot four for a junior middleweight very tall meanwhile budwani he's
00:14:13kind of awkward but he is strong usually straight up straight in as you can see he can be inconsistent
00:14:19lackadaisical but his manager louis saccharis told us that he's more focused these days he realizes
00:14:26finally what it is to be a champion what it is to work well he's gonna have to get inside he's not
00:14:31gonna be able to stay outside like he's doing right now he can't sit there and watch jones jones
00:14:35has got the range we pick him apart from that area he told us in the interview he wants to let these
00:14:40first couple rounds go by then he's gonna get under that jab and try to work the body i don't know
00:14:43what he's waiting for you don't need to let two rounds go by to prove what you know this guy can jab
00:14:48yourself but what he said he'll counter the long jab by going underneath start at the body than the face
00:14:54he has to come at me said budwani if he wants the belt i'm the champion well i'll tell you what i don't
00:15:00think budwani can win the fight going backwards he doesn't have the style for it that's not his
00:15:04style it's not the way he moves yeah i think that's a conceit also across your championships and you
00:15:09think you got to come after you you've got a mistake coming you've got to fight for your championship
00:15:13a confident challenger jones burying some uppercuts for the body of budwani
00:15:20jones is here to upset him now he's here to win i mean he's so confident and when we talked to him
00:15:25it seemed like it was a done deal because last fight he won the title back and he had lost his
00:15:30title to david noel he got knocked out in the second round and he was out i know you touched on it
00:15:37moments ago birdie and i kind of feel the same way this has the elements of an upset
00:15:44that soft gentle breeze carrying it around maybe now we'll see maybe not jones trained at big bear in
00:15:50california for three weeks to anklimate to the altitude it's over a mile high here in albuquerque
00:15:57bobby tell us about that as a factor well i'll tell you what years ago i trained out in lake tahoe
00:16:016300 feet and i went there from jersey and i couldn't run or do anything like i was doing in jersey
00:16:06i couldn't figure out why and they told me the altitude the air is thinner up here the blood is not
00:16:10oxygenated as well it can be a serious factor and i'm not sure how long both of the fighters have been here but
00:16:16if you're not aggravated it will tell halfway through display well grani trying to get inside
00:16:22and jones able to fend him off nicely in answer to the question jones has been here for three weeks
00:16:29in higher altitude than this in california so that problem is not his i mean that that's
00:16:34not one thing that jones is going to worry about
00:16:35what he says he's never this call as the bell sounds to end round one
00:16:49we have our interpreter natalie to help us out
00:17:11the trainer is saying to him that he has the space just in the body you know he just has to go
00:17:19on the body because there is a lot of space over there you have to be careful like we said three
00:17:27first round
00:17:39here they're saying you gotta stand still you gotta keep moving took the first round good keep moving
00:17:43keep moving keep moving soft-spoken but confident diemo jones charges out for round two in round one
00:17:50both both men for the most part keeping their distance well in the first in the only fight that
00:17:55jones lost he said he kind of just hung his chin out there he had the fed fed a latin 154 pound
00:17:59title he had and he won it back by knocking the man out in half the time one round i suppose two but
00:18:04he was kept on the floor for a full 10 seconds by a relative unknown what could 20 do to beat the
00:18:09next one yeah he said he dared that uh fighter david noel and excessively confident that backfire yeah
00:18:16he said he stuck his chin i stuck his hands down and got clocked that's that is what happens that's a hard
00:18:22lesson to learn meanwhile was wanting never down but stopped twice in 38 fights he's 36 and two with
00:18:2931 knockouts and jones 22 and one with 19 ko's a little one for a stiff one jones first world title
00:18:38shot and the white trunks with the blue and red trim with wanting the champion backing up in the blue

00:18:48a little backhand there and i think what he told us in the 20s they're just going to do this for three
00:18:53rounds he said it in the corner he said keep doing this and go down to the body because it's a big
00:18:58target down there but the target keeps moving it is not it's a long target but it's not there when he
00:19:03punches see he's missed by a great deal you know what happens too is when he's bringing his head up
00:19:08before he throws the punches he's got to stay down and bring the punches up as he's rising not stick his head up
00:19:13and then swings he's going to get his head taken up jones has knocked an opponent through the ropes
00:19:19clear out of the ring hammering over hand rights three in a row i mean he just pummeled this guy
00:19:25in another fight he knocked his opponent out cold put him out completely but we just can't be sure of
00:19:30his level of opposition good countering right hook by jones and he's going to land his first good body
00:19:38shot to and fall to the head so now we'll see what jones made of yeah he got hit good and he got
00:19:44gone that time but he seems to take it well took that one that's the first good offensive movement
00:19:52i've seen that from good one first good one solid but what he going to the body but then he ate
00:19:58a countering right hook good footwork by jones is a former soccer player
00:20:06who launched the world title wants to stay in boxing for only three more years he's only 25
00:20:13he's taking sports by half yes soccer young bottom half and now boxing the top half
00:20:19he wants to study at the university and start his own business well he's looking to get down to business
00:20:24here with that long left jab but when he's not working he's weighing behind the jab or any
00:20:30style on the inside he's not really making any moves he's just swinging up high hoping to catch jones
00:20:35like that fell up in with that kind of range it's not going to be that easy right and he's losing points

00:21:02you have to breathe when you are when you are making in the body it's the right way
00:21:10you have to you have to have your feet well done on the ring
00:21:20but 20 gets that left hook in but look how quick jones recovers comes in with a smashing right counter
00:21:28and that's equal that out
00:21:41well round three budwani's most effective punch has been the left hook he scored with a couple of
00:21:47them halfway through a round two a couple of good countering shots and there's the left jab by jones
00:21:59jones from panama looking to become the first two to middleweight champion from that country since the
00:22:04great roberto duran back in 1983 and 84. duran is in attendance here tonight
00:22:09the 20 seems to be looking for something seems to be sitting on a right-hand counter
00:22:13he's throwing predominantly hook counters right now the first two rounds
00:22:16i think that he's sitting for her right hand now
00:22:19he's got to do something bob he can't when he can't keep the title going back and he certainly
00:22:24you don't just give away the first three rounds i mean that's being cocky i think it'll be absolutely
00:22:28crazy to do something
00:22:33really getting rough as budwani comes straight in on jones but jones weathering that storm
00:22:40jones defended it well but budwani's got to do more of that he's got to rough him up he's got
00:22:47to get him in a fight right now he just keeps going back that's not going to do a lunging left
00:22:53hook that he missed by budwani budwani's got to come in behind the jab stuff two or three up in the
00:22:57air back here mo jones up to the ropes fire the right hand of the body and then come up the head
00:23:02work your way in get yourself in position
00:23:03i think what you just said is exactly true it work work is the thing he's got to work his way
00:23:09in he is not working his way in he's trying to take cheap shots and it's not working for him
00:23:15leaving his way from the outside first is clearly going to be a bad thing he's got to work his way
00:23:18in that's that's the key word work your way in the mo jones looking to set up his explosive right
00:23:25with that long left jab well if he lands it's going to be bad news
00:23:30right now he's missed most of the right hands he's thrown but he has nailed him with a lot of
00:23:36left hook i left to the jab there is a straight right by joe almost done here and he got the
00:23:42right he joins us
00:23:48in trouble he got him in trouble with the first punch
00:23:52trying to shake it off two straight hard rights by joe that's what happens steve when you stay on the
00:23:57outside you get caught in the tail end of those big shots we asked a question what would happen
00:24:01on that right hand hit we found out it sucked and amazed budwani and budwani though with a terrific chin
00:24:10he's gonna have to have more than a chin to get through this way
00:24:13the 20 has to compromise jones by decreasing your reach in the range he's got to close the gap get
00:24:18inside and neutralize their reach that long long reach has certainly become a factor
00:24:28we approach the final 10 seconds of round three and a huge one for jones
00:24:32but the game
00:24:38battles back with left hooks to the plate
00:24:46They don't say nothing.
00:25:16Louis Akarias is saying here that he has made the three rounds now, and now he's going
00:25:30to go down, you know, on the speed, because we know that chance has less, you know, after.
00:25:42Well, that advice is pretty good.
00:25:47Cut down on the speed, get down on your legs and start the fight, get down on your feet
00:25:51and start the fight.
00:25:52Well, that's the advice you should have in the first round, and right now he's behind
00:25:57three rounds to nothing on my part.
00:25:59They have the impression from the corner of Loren Boudouane that they think that Jones
00:26:02lives significantly after the third round.

00:26:40It's a terrible range for Boudouane to stay at.

00:26:45Jones to land the right-handed jab, and Boudouane has to reach and jump.

00:29:14And look at the expression on Jones' face.
00:29:18And here you clearly can see Boudouane has got an agenda now.

00:29:22He's coming in, showing harder punches.
00:29:24He's being stronger with his body, keeping more force, closing the gap,
00:29:27coming in behind the jab in combinations.
00:29:29Something he clearly didn't do in the first three rounds.
00:29:31Boudouane really asserting himself during round four, his best round of the fight.

00:29:49It's scheduled for 12 WBA Junior Middleton Championship.
00:29:54Very slow because he started right now.

00:31:32jones triggered by a right uppercut budwani scored well in that blur
00:31:41so right now jones isn't pressing hard even when budwani's backing up he's not throwing a stinging
