00:00:05All the middleweight champions on the East Coast, and the way I want to do it,

00:00:09me and Keith Holmes are from D.C., so we might as well start in D.C.

00:00:12Then I move on up to Philadelphia, and I go on up further than off to New York.

00:00:17And then once you have one champion, then that's the real champion.

00:00:21We have four champions here.

00:00:23I mean, how can you say you're a champion and you have four other champions?

00:00:27I'm going to give the people what they want, and that's unified.

00:00:31Well, the last undisputed middleweight champion was Marvelous Marvin Hagler.

00:00:35A little boxing trivia back in 1987. It's been ten years.

00:00:38That'll tell you something about the current state of the middleweight division.

00:00:41But, Bobby, what about the style of Joppy? He's a crowd pleaser.

00:00:45He's a crowd pleaser. He's a boxer puncher, but he likes to get to the action kind of quick.

00:00:49More of a brawler when he gets on the inside.

00:00:51What he has is a fellow who's very tall and rangy.

00:00:53What he has to do is get inside, work, stay inside, and come up, work the body hard early, and make the big man fall late.

00:01:00All right. As we turn back to the fight doctor here, what does Peter Venaccio have to do, Ferdy, to take the title away from William Joppy?

00:01:07Well, the first thing he's going to use is his height, his reach advantage, a stiff jab.

00:01:12And what Joppy's most concerned about, at least talking to us, he said he's got a tremendous left hook to the body.

00:01:17I've got to get away from that left hook to the body.

00:01:19If that starts thumping regularly, then we've got to fight. And if not, then he's going to get eaten up by Joppy.

00:01:25Well, even though Joppy is the champion, Venaccio is the challenger, they have both fought quality opposition.

00:01:32Pretty equal to that departure. Let's take a look at the challenger.

00:01:35Mr. Venaccio has worked his way up to the WBA's number one middleweight contender, although he did not meet any big names along the way in Brazil.

00:01:42Has relocated to Miami tonight, his first title shot.

00:01:54As he makes his way in, top contender, Peter Venaccio.

00:01:57Nice, soft-spoken guy. We spoke with him yesterday.

00:02:01He hasn't fought in about six months.

00:02:20Well, in all honesty, he's a big fighter with what I understand is a great right hand.

00:02:24They have to say they can punch with the left hook to the body, too.

00:02:26Even Joppy says that.

00:02:27If he uses his tools, he certainly has them.

00:02:31He's got a good shot, but he isn't against a guy who wants it badly.

00:03:32He also wants recognition.

00:03:33But, Ferdy, he may have to wait for somebody like Welderweight champ Oscar De La Hoya after

00:03:40unifying to gain that kind of recognition.

00:03:43It's so difficult today to get named, to get the public to understand who you are.

00:03:47And the only way he's got to do it is to beat the other three guys, of which Hopkins

00:03:51is the one that's the big, big hurdle for him.

00:07:44Introducing to you first the challenger on my left, fighting out of the blue corner.

00:07:49Entering the ring wearing white trunks with multi-color trim, originally from Sao Paulo, Brazil,

00:07:56now making his home in Miami, Florida.

00:08:00He weighed in at already 159 pounds.

00:08:04His record stands at 34 wins.

00:08:07One loss, one draw, 26 wins coming by way of knockout.

00:08:12Tonight, he is making his first attempt at a world title.

00:08:15Please welcome the WBA number one ranked contender, introducing Peter Venencio.

00:08:28And presenting his opponent on my right, the defending world champion, fighting out of the red corner,

00:08:41He weighed in at the middleweight limit of 160 pounds even.

00:08:45He is undefeated in his campaign of the ring with 23 wins, no losses, one draw, and 19 wins coming by way of knockout.

00:10:16He's a boxer puncher, does have power, good chin.

00:10:18Here we go, round one scheduled for 12 WBA middleweight championship.

00:10:22Bonancio looking to become Brazil's first world champ since Edna Jaffeel,

00:10:26former undisputed world bantamweight champion, also from Sao Paulo, Brazil.

00:10:35I mean great in every usage of that word.

00:10:37Bonancio came out through a good right hand to the body, not the left hook that we're looking for,

00:10:41but a nice right hand.

00:10:44Jaffe in the black trunks, Bonancio in the white.

00:10:47Jaffe told us because of the height advantage, a look to get on the inside, go to the body,

00:10:51use speed, quickness, short punches.

00:10:54Just missed with that, the overhand right, Jaffe.

00:10:56Boy, these two guys are electric.

00:10:58In contrast to those eight-wheelers that we had here last time.

00:11:02Look at these two guys.

00:11:03Wow, are they fast.

00:11:05The weight is different and the pace will adjust accordingly.

00:11:07The breeze feels good, doesn't it?

00:11:09Almost a minute gone by, round one.

00:11:11Bonancio told us he'll start out by boxing Jaffe,

00:11:14then at the right moment step in, look for the knockout.

00:11:17That left hook was not low, it was on the line.

00:11:20It was on the line, that's the one that Jaffe was talking about.

00:11:24Bonancio, former member of the Brazilian Olympic team.

00:11:31Jaffe saw Bonancio fight Bruno Phillips on tape,

00:11:33felt he had a strong right hand, but caught with the jab,

00:11:37and just was too slow, at least to him.

00:11:41Here's Bonancio canvassing Jaffe, able to fight his way out.

00:11:46He landed one nice right hand,

00:11:48but the rest of that was kind of muffled by Jaffe.

00:11:50He blocked him well.

00:11:52Yeah, that was a good piece of defense by Jaffe.

00:11:54The other guy looked good doing it, but he wasn't getting hit.

00:11:57Jaffe looked good defending.

00:11:59Jaffe has never been downthrower, amateur,

00:12:01likes to throw combinations, excellent technician, Murray.

00:12:04Great reflexes, fast hands, always improving.

00:12:07And the funny thing he said to us,

00:12:09I said, how are you going to handle a tall guy like this?

00:12:11He says, everybody's taller than I am.

00:12:12I mean, that's all I do is fight tall guys.

00:12:15Good perspective.

00:12:15He's used to it.

00:12:16I heard former middleweight champ Carmen Basilio once say,

00:12:19because he was only 5'6 1⁄2",

00:12:21he always tried to get on the inside,

00:12:23tried to throw combinations,

00:12:24because everybody was always taller than him,

00:12:26so he had to compensate.

00:12:27Basilio had a hook, an uppercut,

00:12:29which was a classic they still talk about.

00:12:31Jaffe also felt his speed was better from the outside.

00:12:33He would be able to move in and out and box if necessary.

00:12:38Nice right hand.

00:12:38And Jaffe just walked into a countering right hook by Vinatio to the head.

00:12:44This is a very difficult pace for middleweights to keep for a long time.

00:12:47It's only round one.

00:12:51Boy, they are going at it like it was in the middle of the fight,

00:12:54like it was all warmed up and flailing away.

00:12:57And I tell you what,

00:12:58no one yet has established himself in this round.

00:13:00No, this is a very even round.

00:13:02This could go either way.
