00:00little in the world of sports is more erratic less predictable than the scoring of a fight
00:12we're talking very cockily but you don't have a judge
00:14you have to think that if you don't even score the winner of this fight is fennec
00:21one never knows but this has got to be a clear-cut win for fennec who has covered himself with glory
00:30is even a draw oh my goodness
00:35a draw and you can see the reaction of sweet pea whittaker he can't believe it and frankly i can't
00:43either 105 to 104 in favor of the winner and still champion
00:51this doesn't seem to add up he may have to go back and add it up again
01:02what's holding randall up
01:05oh look at this
01:08challenge it's a bad cut
01:12you want the fight to go long
01:14they're going to go to the scorecards
01:20controversy
01:21if you implement a better scoring system that could be adhered to
01:25better judges and a system of recourse to address the atrocities
01:29that are taking place against the fighters i think that something's going to happen there
01:33i think that'll break it
01:34it's an imperfect world boxing
01:36as long as we have human beings scoring i think you're always going to have some controversies
01:40what we want is
01:42what we don't want i'll say
01:45is to have one judge have it eight to four in rounds and the
01:48another judge have it eight to four the other way
01:50then we have a problem
01:51we know there's going to be some rounds that are so close to call that one judge will give it one way
01:56one will give it the other
01:57and we have no problem with that what we don't want is the wide disparity of scoring
02:01and the controversy over scoring continued last march
02:06for the hotly contested and highly competitive wba cruiserweight title fight
02:10between orla norris and arthur williams was decided by one judge's very lopsided score
02:16patricia morse jarvin had it 118 110 for norris
02:20unbelievable
02:21one judge has a little lopsided but you know despite that you know i thought i wanted to fight
02:26clearly well i felt like i was cheated and i was real angry for a while i mean it took me a
02:32took me a good while to get over it
02:34i mean i watched the tape over and over and that's what kind of made me get over it because i
02:39felt every time i watched the tape i knew i won
02:41now tired of the controversy and eager for a resolution orlin norris and arthur williams have
02:49decided they and not boxing's fickle scoring system will be the ultimate judge in tonight's
02:56rematch
02:56you know hopefully in this fight you know uh it doesn't you know i can be the judge in the fight
03:01you know it doesn't have to go to the cards i don't know i don't want to go to the decision
03:05so i'm gonna be you know trying my best to knock him out
03:08well we can't seem to get through a night of boxing these days without some form of controversy
03:20as mentioned the best way for orlin norris and arthur williams to avoid the strange scoring syndrome
03:26two letters k-o and just in case you missed it we'd like to show you the judge's scorecards from
03:31that first norris williams fight back on march the fourth norris taking the close split decision
03:35victory to retain the title here the breakdown judge bill graham went with arthur williams by the
03:40score of 114 112 jerry roth had the same score but a different winner orlin norris but the real
03:46eye-opener was turned in by patricia morris jarman who had norris winning by a whopping 118 to 110
03:52which makes you wonder how two of the judges can have it so close while a third judge can see it so
03:57one-sided particularly when one of the other judges gave it to the opposing fighter ferdy your
04:04thoughts on the scoring of that first bout well it was awful because of patricia jarman the other two
04:10had it very close whoever won it was very close well what what happens here is they have had a
04:15continuing problem and the head of the commission mark ratner has done a wonderful job he he takes
04:20these judges puts them in a room about a month later and says okay let's look at this thing together
04:24when they did that with patricia jarman she says three of those rounds i would have scored it the
04:28other way that would have given a respectable 115 113 for norris respectable and accurate that would
04:34have been okay not that eight points now by doing this over and over again there's a hope that possibly
04:40they can get a unanimity of of opinion between the judges and never be exactly the same they're not
04:44supposed to be they're human beings judging a fight but they should never be that disparity of eight
04:50rounds which we have seen here over and over again in what has been called
04:54a vegas decision they got to get rid of that and mark ratner's doing the best he can to do that in
04:59light of the scoring do you think the fighters will change their strategy in any way you know i don't
05:03think so because both of them had victory right there i mean williams thought he won norris thought he
05:07won williams boxed and had a great left jab going and could have finished him off he's not going to
05:13change that and norris fought hard but his mind wasn't on it it seemed like he wandered away from his purpose
05:19if he keeps into that game plan of rushing a heart attack to the body and and aggressiveness i think
05:25that norris could win this fight more easily than the than he fought harder the last time if you can
05:31understand that well he said he wasn't mentally focused that first time around we'll see what
05:35happens tonight right now we get our first look at the challenger author james williams
05:42he is 29 years of age born in pensacola florida now makes his home right here in las vegas the wba's
05:48top contender for the cruiserweight title the current usba cruiserweight champ a two to one underdog 21
05:55two and one his record with 16 knockouts tonight his second shot of the world title many felt he won
06:00it the first time around back on march 4th
06:12the first time
06:25the first time
06:31is
06:53author williams who is three and oh in rematches revenge nothing new to this man back in 1991
06:59after a third round knockout at the hands of a fighter named clendon warrior williams only other
07:03defeat outside of norris he came back with a vengeance just two months later he destroyed
07:08warrior with a vicious second round tko of course warrior is not norris he calls himself king
07:13author tonight this would-be king gets another chance at the crown and now the champion orlin
07:21norris looking to dispel any doubt that he is superior to arthur williams of the ring many of
07:26the belief that norris was quite fortunate to escape with that victory back in march perhaps
07:31even norris himself had to wonder judging from his reaction after the first fight 28 years old
07:37lubbock texas his birthplace now lives in san diego a record of 40 and three with one no decision 22
07:43knockouts tonight his second title defense
08:06wow
08:13so
08:27Orlin Norris who fought his first 33 fights is a heavyweight including two stints as NABF
08:46champion after wins over Greg Page of the Snipes a title shot against Mike Tyson was derailed in
08:521990 when he lost to Bert Cooper after losing the NABF belt in his second reign to Tony Tucker
08:57he's shed over 20 pounds and since he's moved down to the cruiserweight division he's 11-0 with seven knockouts
09:05earlier they had a problem with the ropes we understand the third strand from the top we'll
09:14take a look at the action earlier the Mirage ring crew working diligently to fix it between the two
09:21championship fights we'll see how it holds up it was not the area where the fighter was knocked through
09:30the ropes earlier tonight we showed you on the highlights when the Francois Botha did the damage
09:34against Phil Scott looks like it's uh semi repaired anyway and here it is now all ready to go for this
09:45main event let's check the numbers as we go to the tail of the tape the age almost even with Norris 28
09:51and Williams 29 Williams with the three inch height advantage Norris tipped the scales at 188 Williams
09:58the cruiserweight limit of 190 and the biggest disparity as you can see Williams with the reach advantage of
10:03nearly eight inches and to the WBA rules for this championship bout the 10-point must scoring system
10:09in effect three scoring judges no standing eight count the three knockdown rule again is in effect
10:15only the referee can stop the fight and a fighter cannot be saved by the bell except in the final round

13:23coming by way of knockout please welcome the WBA Cruiserweight champion of the world introducing Orlin the juice
13:32Norris
13:38once again here's your referee in charge now to give instructions
13:42Richard Steele
13:44all right you guys I gave you both instructions in the dressing room I'm cautioning you again
13:48obey my commands at all times take hands and good luck
13:55the final words from Richard Steele whose middle name
13:59is controversy Orlin Norris is mentioned not mentally focused for his first fight against
14:05Williams until the sixth round wake-up call Norris had controlled Williams
14:09in three or four sparring sessions felt no reason to worry for the fight
14:13but he learned a huge lesson not to take anybody for granted he trained three weeks in the high
14:18altitude of Lake Tahoe has thought about Williams every day unlike the build-up to the first fight
14:23meanwhile Williams in the black trunks solidified himself as a major figure in the unpopulated
14:30off malign Cruiserweight division despite losing to Orlin Norris it took some guts to fight Norris
14:36undefeated as a cruiserweight and Williams erasing doubts that he would crumble under the pressure
14:43and power of Orlin Norris
14:47Williams would start out rather tentative here he hadn't got that strong jab that was
14:52dominating that last fight but I'll tell you one
14:56I'll tell you one thing Orlin Norris's mind is on this fight I mean he wants to get out of here
15:01he doesn't want to have any kind of doubt of this
15:04in their first meeting Norris came out strong winning the first round by a 10-8 score
15:08but those of you who followed the fight know what happened after that
15:14Norris in many field prior to winning the title long overdue for a world championship had he fought
15:19as a cruiserweight not a heavyweight earlier in his career probably would have won a title
15:23a long time ago well-disciplined deceptively strong good speed excellent defense strong jaw nice shotgun jab
15:31solid right which knocked Williams down to the first round of fight one
15:36Williams keeps pawing out that left like he's doing now instead of snapping it
15:40he is going to get hit by a right hand crossing over it
15:42Orlin it looks like he's going at 110 miles per hour and the other guy looks like he's just around about 50
15:48he's just kind of poking it out he's very tentative he doesn't he doesn't look confident
15:54Williams I'm speaking of and
15:56the exact opposite is true of Orlin Norris
15:59our sometimes partner Bobby Ches had held the title but
16:02unable to defend because of an injured back
16:04Norris won the vacant cruiserweight title back in November
16:08with a six-round knockout of Marcello Figueroa in France
16:12we'll hold him punch a way out
16:13but Norris clearly looking the superior here in the opening round
16:18but Arthur Williams dangerous as Norris discovered back in March
16:24about a minute to go in the first round
16:27good rally there for a moment by Williams but back comes Norris
16:30he's chasing him he's dictating the fight
16:32he's landing the harder punches
16:34this tentative left hand that Williams keeps putting out there
16:38it's really going to cost him
16:40holding and hitting by Orlin Norris
16:42broken up by Richard Steele
16:44a little caution
16:46someone in the corner better tell him to start snapping the jab
16:49and not just laying out there
16:50it's not an invitation it's supposed to be a warning
16:53what he knows of Arthur Williams
16:55that left hand was blocked by Williams
16:57Williams with the major reach advantage great leverage
17:02but so far not taking advantage
17:04final seconds of round one
17:11good opening round for Arlin Norris
17:20we'll take it into the Williams corner
17:22Stacey McKinley in charge
17:24take a deep breath
17:26take a deep breath
17:28look
17:28don't lay back on the ropes with this guy ok
17:31deep breath
17:32your box is good
17:33you don't lay on the ropes alright
17:35come there
17:36deep breath
17:38good round
17:39good round
17:41but you got to use that jab on him alright
17:43and when you break into it
17:44don't go to the ropes Arthur
17:46deep breath
17:46you'll be alright
17:47some on the plate
17:48deep breath
17:49you're going to be alright baby
17:50you're going to be alright
17:51you're going to be alright
17:53watch him break in with that hook
17:55you block that hook
17:56and you counter with the right hand
17:57let's watch the aggression
17:59of Arlin Norris
18:01he is on top of him
18:02that was a good hook
18:03followed by
18:04it was a missed right hand
18:05and then a good left hook followed
18:06look at the effect
18:07all the way back to the ropes
18:08goes Williams
18:09and that's what this corner is telling him not to do
18:11you heard the corner tell Williams
18:13you got to start with a jab
18:14that little thing he's
18:15dinky thing he's getting out there
18:16that's not going to do the job
18:18Jason McKinley doesn't want
18:21Williams to move around
18:22as much here in the rematch
18:24he wants him to settle down
18:25use more leverage
18:27not swing wildly
18:28shorten up the punches
18:30he taught him what he calls
18:31a Joe Lewis jab
18:32and a teasing jab
18:33in the first fight
18:35Williams used it more
18:36as a range finder
18:37you see the blood
18:38from the nostril
18:39Arthur Williams
18:41he was bloodied in round one
18:42Williams is reaching for him
18:49is to try to identify the target
18:51to try to make it
18:52stand still
18:53so he can hit it
18:54and that's just
18:55bad stuff
18:56when you're fighting a guy
18:57that's fast like
18:58Warland Norris
18:58has got a strong hand
18:59and Norris very cognizant
19:01of Williams strong right hand
19:03and it looks like Williams
19:05is looking to unload it
19:06more frequently
19:07now he has an
19:08equally effective left hand
19:09but there's a good
19:10cutting right by Norris
19:11Norris
19:13Norris is getting the range
19:15no question about it
19:16he's more aggressive
19:17he's more confident
19:18he's getting that range
19:19and he looks like
19:20he's enjoying the evening
19:21yes thus far
19:26this is certainly
19:27a different
19:27Orland Norris
19:28than we saw
19:29in the first fight
19:30a lot more confident
19:31a lot more focused
19:32he said he was physically
19:34okay
19:35but mentally not there
19:36in that first fight
19:38just did not take
19:40the challenger
19:42seriously enough
19:43left hand
19:44nice hook
19:45by Norris
19:46you know you look
19:47and thought both these
19:48guys want to go
19:48to the heavyweights
19:49you're not looking at
19:50heavyweights here
19:51you're looking at
19:52cruiserweights
19:53as bereft as that
19:55division is
19:55of starling
19:56big talents
19:57these two guys
19:58are the best there is
19:59there
20:00Norris was more
20:01of a defensive fighter
20:02when he was
20:03a heavyweight
20:04he would have to be
20:07he would have to be
20:07he's too small
20:08he says his walking
20:10a round weight
20:10is 215
20:11Williams walking
20:12a round weight
20:13is 220
20:14both would like to
20:15unify the title
20:16after this
20:17and then move up
20:17to the bigger box
20:18division
20:19the heavyweights
20:20well I would rather
20:25be the champion
20:26of the cruiserweights
20:27for a few years
20:28than I would be
20:28just another contender
20:29in the heavyweights
20:31so I
20:32my philosophy
20:33be a champion
20:34that may have been
20:35the best punch
20:36by Williams
20:37that kind of spun
20:38Norris' head a bit
20:41oh nice little uppercut
20:43nice uppercut
20:44by Orland Norris
20:45inside and hard
20:48kind of unseen punches
20:50which the public
20:51doesn't see
20:52but the other guy
20:53feels a jolt
20:55mention the off-maligned
20:57cruiserweight division
20:58but this division
21:00has had its problems
21:01over the years
21:02because it's been
21:03more of a holding zone
21:04that's what it is
21:05it's a holding
21:06it's a holding pattern
21:07to go up to the heavyweights
21:08and the only one
21:09that's ever been able
21:10to do it
21:11is Evander Holyfield
21:12there's a crunching
21:13right hand
21:14by Orland Norris
21:15nice overhand right
21:17he's doing what he wants
21:18is Orland Norris
21:19to pull up the
21:21that he's going to hold
21:22in with us
21:25come on
21:26get him
21:27I'm looking
21:28against him
21:29to go
21:30all
21:31he's going to go
21:35because they're going to get
21:36to hollering him over there
21:37you know
21:38he's going to make more
21:39mistakes
21:40wait a second when
21:41comes
21:42he's going to
21:43work on that nose
21:44Here's that little left hook and the sneaky uppercut.
22:03Now watch the little uppercut come in.
22:05In just a few minutes after that came the uppercut.
22:09If we have time, we'll show it to you.
22:12It is just right there.
22:13Just right on the money.
22:15Beautiful stuff to do inside uppercut.
22:19And round three scheduled for 12 for the WBA Cruiserweight Championship.
22:23The champion, Orland Norris in the white trunks.
22:25The challenger, Arthur Williams in the black with the gold trim.
22:29I'm certain in the corner of Norris is not worried one little bit.
22:33They seem to say, well, we've got two rounds in the kit.
22:35Just keep doing it.
22:36Shorten up your punches and go with the hook.
22:39Great.
22:40Abel Sanchez running the show in Norris' corner.
22:43Blood still streaking from the right nostril of Williams.
22:52Norris who prides himself on defense.
22:56Showing the offense.
22:57Winging away.
23:02Pouring it out.
23:02Oh, what a heavy right hand.
23:04And Williams in trouble.
23:06Williams in big trouble.
23:07He may not be able to live with this.
23:10He was just about ready to go down.
23:12Saved by the right shoulder of Orland Norris.
23:15Well, Norris has got plenty of time here to finish him off.
23:18And he just gets nice and calm.
23:21There he goes.
23:22Another big right.
23:23Followed by another.
23:24Sledgehammer rights.
23:26And down goes Williams.
23:27Crumbles.
23:28Hits all over.
23:29That's absolutely three sledgehammer right hands.
23:36And there was no question of a decision in this fight.
23:40It is all Norris took two rounds and finished off with a gigantic knockout.
23:45Orland Norris erasing any doubt.
23:50Okay, relax.
23:52And he retains his title.
23:56Well, Williams didn't fight with anything resembling the talent that he showed in the last time.
24:01He looked talented.
24:02He almost looked too cautious.
24:04And didn't do anything to keep Orland Norris off.
24:07Norris had his way.
24:08He was completely indefensive at the end.
24:11He was no question about it flat out on his face.
24:14The 5'11 Orland Norris chopping the Redwood down.
24:196'2 Arthur Williams winding up on the canvas.
24:24And Norris goes two for two against this young man.
24:30That's the Orland Norris we know.
24:34You can hear in the background, that's the Orland Norris we know.
24:39Well, let's take a look at how he got him in trouble.
24:42Orland Norris connected.
24:44Look at that hook and then the right hand afterwards.
24:46The right hand just shook him completely.
24:48After that, it was just a barrage because it's a matter of time when you get that guy in trouble.
24:53And Norris is hitting that hard.
24:54I'm surprised that he's hitting so openly because that means he has no regard whatsoever for Williams.
25:00He just means we're going to knock this guy out and he's never going to punch back.
25:07That's an awful lot of punishment there.
25:09He would have gone down there, as you said prior to that, but he was lifted up by Norris' body.
25:15And some more look at basically the same thing.
25:17The hook and then the right hand.
25:18From there on out, it's academic.
25:20I mean, he really didn't have a chance.
25:22Of course, he took a lot of punishment.
25:24That zinging right hand uppercut had that thing landed.
25:28But you see, he was so confident.
25:30Norris was so confident.
25:31He had no desire to even worry about defense.
25:34It was just winging away.
25:36Look at those punches.
25:37He had Williams had anything.
25:38He could have come back and counterpunching and done some damage.
25:41But he had absolutely nothing.
25:43I mean, he is, for all intents and purposes, unconscious there.
25:47He is just standing up, but he's out.
25:49And at the end of the fight, I think that's probably the closest thing I've ever seen
25:54is somebody getting nailed into the canvas with three straight right hands.
25:58Watch these right hands.
25:59They come from all the way back.
26:01One.
26:03And then another one.
26:04Two.
26:05And then another one.
26:06Three.
26:07And then by this time, it's all over.
26:10I mean, that is like nailing a nail into a piece of wood.
26:14And for those of you who didn't see it clearly, here's another.
26:17Here is another view of the end of the fight.
26:21This is Orlan Norris chopping down the tree.
26:23One.
26:24And another huge right hand.
26:25Look, it's totally from all the way back here.
26:28He reached all the way back.
26:30Well, what he couldn't do in the first fight, he certainly did in the second,
26:34leaving absolutely no doubt that he is the champion of the Cruiserweights.
26:37And Ferdie, Orlan Norris hammering away with a vengeance.
26:45Orlan Norris, who raises his record to 41-3 with 23 knockouts.
26:52We are set for the official time.
26:54We'll go up into the ring and our ring announcer, Jimmy Lennon, Jr.
26:57Ladies and gentlemen, with the time of one minute, eight seconds,
27:03and round number three, the referee in charge, Richard Steele, stops the contest.
27:09The winner by way of technical knockout, and still champion, Orlan, the Juice Norris.
27:17So there you have it, Orlan Norris taking the rematch with Arthur Williams,
27:29and the door is now wide open to try and unify the Cruiserweight title,
27:32if that's what he wishes to do, by beating Anaclet Wamba and Al Cole,
27:37the other Cruiserweight champions, and then perhaps move back up to heavyweight for the bigger money.
27:44The Fight Doctor is standing by in the ring with the winner.
27:46Freddie, well, you said there wasn't going to be any doubt this time.
27:50There was going to be no doubt, just two words, K and O.
27:53That's right.
27:54Now it's Orlan Norris versus Dr. Freddie Pacheco.
27:57All right, we'll get it on the next time, but this time you beat me good.
28:01Yeah.
28:01Well, you know, it was a good fight, you know.
28:06I came out to do what I wanted to do.
28:08I was able to do it, and I took him out.
28:11Let's take a look at when you first got him in trouble.
28:13Let's look at this.
28:14You tell me what you were doing, because these shots were great.
28:16All right, I'm just waiting on him, taking my time, because before the last fight, he
28:21was getting away from a lot of my shots.
28:23I was putting my feet together perfectly, and then stepping in, and then, because if
28:28he would have moved back, I still would have got him.
28:30He didn't seem to have any jab to keep you off.
28:33Look at these punches.
28:34You're throwing them from way back.
28:36Like, you didn't have any worry that this guy was going to count a punch.
28:39He was out.
28:39He was hurt.
28:40You know, it was only a matter of time at that point.
28:42As you will see the end of the fight as it comes up on our replay, you will see how you
28:46throw punches from so far back.
28:48You must have dislocated.
28:49Here's the one where you throw three humdingers.
28:52Watch this.
28:53Talk to us.
28:54These are the right hands that hammered him into the canvas.
28:59Yeah, you know, I know right there, I mean, he couldn't throw anything back.
29:04I saw his eyes every time I would land, and that's why I wanted to hit him right in the
29:08ear.
29:08And there are three.
29:09I don't think you even threw a left hand or thought about it.
29:11You just had three winging right-hand punches.
29:14It wasn't necessary.
29:15Well, when a man is down like that, he is out.
29:18There is no question about it.
29:19And the question's got to be, you're the cruiserweight champion.
29:22Why do you want to mess around with the heavyweights when you're so good as a cruiserweight?
29:26Right now, the heavyweights are not even in my mind right now.
29:29I'm thinking about the cruiserweights unifying or something.
29:32I'm not even thinking about the heavyweights.
29:34That's you guys thinking about that right now.
29:36I'm not thinking about it.
29:37I think you're a great cruiserweight champion.
29:38You should stay there.
29:39That's where it's good.
29:40All right, and you're satisfied, obviously satisfied with the performance.
29:43Can you improve on it?
29:45No, that's about as good as you ever get.
29:47Yep, this is Arlen Norris' dad.
29:49And you absolutely can't say anything better about your performance.
29:52Did you think that he had anything to fight you with in the first two rounds?
29:57He didn't seem to hit you with anything.
29:59Well, I mean, I knew he had the jab, but I don't know if I kept him circling to his right.
30:03He had nothing.
30:04All right, and for a very satisfied champion, well, you should be to Steve Albert at ringside.
30:09Thank you very much, Bertie.
30:10Orlan Norris has not lost in 12 fights as a cruiserweight.
30:15He's now 12-0 with eight knockouts since moving down from the heavyweight.
30:19Lost in 12 fights as a cruiserweight.
30:22He's now 12-0 with eight knockouts since moving down from the heavyweight division.
30:27Well, the moment has arrived for the Fighter of the Night Award, which has now become a regular installment at the conclusion of each edition of Showtime Championship Boxing.

30:42Pete Allman of KVEG Radio in Las Vegas.
30:45Royce Pure of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.
30:47Steve Sneddon of Cadet News Service have selected Orlan Norris.
30:52It's unanimous.
30:53So congratulations to Orlan Norris for being chosen as the Fighter of the Night.
30:58A $5,000 donation will be made in the name of Orlan Norris to each of these organizations.
31:03The United Negro College Fund, the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund, and UNLV by Showtime Networks and Don King Productions.
31:11So, another night of boxing is in the books.
31:17This evening we saw two world championship fights in weight classes at both ends of the spectrum,
31:22and it was quite a contrast in terms of style, the quickness of the junior featherweights, and the power of the cruiserweights.
31:29We watched a king named Arthur try to dethrone the king of cruisers.
31:32He failed, and a little giant called Wilfredo set out to retain his crown, and he was successful.
31:38Now, before we sign off, we want to recap tonight's results one last time.
31:45And our co-feature, Wilfredo Vasquez against Jaewon Choi for the WBA Junior Featherweight Championship.
31:51Vasquez knocked down Choi twice in the second.
31:53Referee Mitch Halpern stopped it at 146 of round two, saying that Choi could not continue.
32:00So he retains his WBA Junior Featherweight title.
32:03And in our main event, Orla Norris didn't let the judges decide this one as he took out King Arthur Williams at 108 in round three.
32:11Long live the king.
32:16Showtime Championship Boxing returns later this month on Saturday, July 23rd.
