00:00Riff TV presents Meltdown's Meltdown.
00:08Taking Meltdown's Meltdown on the road.
00:10We're in downtown Royal Oak at UHF Records.
00:12About a year and a half ago or so, one of my friends said to me that he only listens to music at his house on vinyl.
00:18That phrase stuck with me, and now I'm addicted to vinyl.
00:21Of course, vinyl has made a huge resurgence in the past couple of years.
00:25I'm down here to find out more about it.
00:27Inside Hero Store Manager Scotty Hagan.
00:29Scotty, thanks for having us, first of all, here at UHF Records.
00:32Tell me about the rebirth of vinyl and what you've seen in the last couple of years.
00:36It's one of those things where I kind of noticed it about eight years ago, around the time we opened the store,
00:43that there was record collectors still out there, but they were still making new vinyl.
00:48People were buying it, but it really seemed to pick up about 2012 or so.
00:53That's when I started to see a lot of younger people getting into it.
00:56And that's, you know, I would see all the dudes that never gave it up all the time.
01:00But then when I started seeing younger kids come in, and more and more newer artists were putting out vinyl, it just grew.
01:07And, you know, more companies were making turntables.
01:10All that stuff was happening, and it just, you know, it's been going nonstop since then.
01:15Now, what do you think, why do you think that is?
01:17Like, I know reasons why I like vinyl, but what do you think is, like, some of the reasons that people come in here now and are looking for vinyl?
01:23You know, a lot of it, I know people like it because of the sound.
01:27That's, like, number one.
01:28People want to hear analog.
01:30They want to hear just that warmth that you get from vinyl.
01:33So, a lot of people, like, you know, they want to sit down and listen to a record instead of skipping through tracks.
01:38You know, you put a record on, you're kind of committed.
01:40You know, you're not going to sit there and go, I want to hear track four now or something.
01:43Yeah.
01:43But, please, you sit there, you know, the artwork, all the fun stuff that comes along with a record, you know, sitting down, listening to it.
01:50And, I think a lot of people that are into it, especially, I think, a lot of younger people, I'm under the impression that, you know, they didn't grow up with it.
01:57So, it's something from another time.
01:58Something new to them.
01:59Exactly.
02:00They're learning it for the first time, or they may have a vague memory of, like, a relative having a record player or something.
02:06And, you know, I think it affects everybody differently.
02:09Yeah, something that's old is new again.
02:11Exactly.
02:11Now, do you personally have a record collection?
02:13I do have a record collection.
02:15How many do you have, you think?
02:18Probably somewhere around 1,000 right now.
02:20I collect a lot of, I'm a diehard, through and through Alice Cooper fanatic.
02:24Show them your shirt, by the way.
02:25Oh, okay.
02:27Yeah, Alice Cooper.
02:28Sure.
02:29Seen them 100 times.
02:30Tattoos.
02:30Tattoos, there you go.
02:31Yeah, the whole works, you know.
02:34But, yeah, I collect a lot of variants of Alice Cooper records from around the world.
02:38And, I'm a big Iron Maiden fan, a lot of Maiden vinyl, you know, big love Cheap Trick, love Kiss.
02:45Like, all these bands that have been around forever that have massive catalogs.
02:48This is Rory.
03:02He's from Waterford.
03:03He's here shopping for records.
03:04What are you looking for?
03:05Currently, anything interesting, I'm looking at a Martin Gay, the What's Going On.
03:14It's an original press.
03:15Oh, okay.
03:15You said you have a lot of records at home?
03:17I do.
03:18I probably have around 300, which isn't a ton.
03:20Right.
03:21But, uh...
03:22What do you like to collect?
03:24Typically, alternative.
03:25Okay.
03:26Nine Inch Nails is probably my biggest collection.
03:28Really?
03:29I'm actually going to the concert on the 22nd.
03:30Okay, there you go.
03:31Yeah, I got a couple Nine Inch Nails records as well, so...
03:33Yeah, that's pretty cool.
03:34That's all you're getting today, Marvin Gaye?
03:36At the moment, I'm just looking around, but that's the first thing I was really looking for.
03:40You can feel free to buy me a record.
03:42I will.
03:57Got to thank Scotty and the fine staff here at UHF Records and Royal Oak.
04:00If you're looking for some albums, stop on down.
04:02Of course, I'm a big collector.
04:03I'll be picking up some before I leave here as well.
04:05What records are you getting into lately?
04:07Have you bought any?
04:09I figured you'd like this one.
04:10Oh, thanks, man.
04:11I appreciate it.
04:12My pleasure.
