00:00Your girl Lori Mack here from 105 When The Bounce,
00:02and I am here with the biggest entrepreneur, Big K.
00:06What up, though?
00:07Hey, hey, how's it going?
00:08You'd already know.
00:09You know, I'm excited for you to be in the building.
00:11I see you got two other guests with you.
00:13Please, introduce yourself, ladies.
00:15Yes, hey, y'all.
00:16My name is Sade, and I am the editor-in-chief of Divine Magazine.
00:21And hey, I'm Deja.
00:23I'm the owner of 101.
00:24Yes, welcome, ladies, welcome.
00:27I'm so happy, honored to have you here in the studio.
00:29Now, I know it's a big, yes, absolutely.
00:32It's a big month for you guys.
00:34Yes, it's a big month.
00:35I'm serious.
00:37You got a lot going on.
00:38What's happening this month that we need to know about?
00:41Yes, so on Thursday, May 15th, which is also National Flower Giving Day,
00:46we are having the Flourish Awards.
00:48So the Flourish Awards was curated for us to give some commodity
00:53to the behind-the-scenes heroes in entertainment,
00:56the DJs, the producers, the managers,
01:00everybody that helps the talent thrive.
01:01Like, we love our talent.
01:02We do.
01:03No shade to them.
01:04But it takes a lot for the talent to show up the way that they do,
01:08killing stuff all the time.
01:09And the people that's a part of that need their kudos, too.
01:12Absolutely.
01:12I love that because, honestly, I don't think we get enough recognition
01:15because a lot of times people are like, how, who, what?
01:19You know, we don't really know who's all behind the scenes.
01:21What inspired you to create this just because you just want to give them
01:25their flowers?
01:26Or what made you come up with this concept?
01:28I actually work as a consultant in beauty, music, and fashion industries
01:33over the past maybe like seven, eight years.
01:36And it started off just as, like, I'm just around.
01:39And if I'm around and I see something that could be better,
01:42I'm going to just help.
01:42But it was like a lot of people around me were starting businesses.
01:44And before I knew it, it was kind of consuming most of my time.
01:47Every weekend, I'm helping somebody pop-up shop.
01:48I'm helping with a clothing launch.
01:50I'm doing this.
01:50So it was like, I need to make some type of business out of it.
01:52And just seeing, like, once entrepreneurs or talent got to a bigger space,
01:58how many people was a part of their team that was like, man,
02:02it's so much stuff that we were all doing, just a few of us.
02:05But look at how much better it's executed with the whole full team.
02:08And it's like people just seeing the value of that,
02:10I think that us just celebrating it will help more people see the value of that as well.
02:15Absolutely.
02:15I'm excited.
02:16So is this your first award ceremony?
02:18Yes.
02:19This is the inaugural event.
02:21Usually I'm the person project managing and helping people with their events.
02:26So this is my first one that I'm headlining.
02:29And I'm happy that I got my girls with me.
02:31Like, because, yeah, it's been a big task.
02:34Yeah.
02:34It's definitely going to be working, though.
02:36Yes, please go around and explain.
02:37Like, I know it doesn't, I know it's not easy to put this all together.
02:41Oh, definitely not.
02:42Logistics.
02:43That is a thing.
02:44So, I mean, it's really important to have, like, the relationships, too.
02:48Like, I think a really big part of all of this coming together is not only us,
02:52but, like, just utilizing our network and, like, allowing people to shine in the ways that they shine best.
02:59And, like you said, like, when you have the full team, like, it always takes a village, whether it's a baby, a baby business, okay?
03:07So I think with the logistics and just planning, like, we've been flyering.
03:12Like, we've been, you know, in any nook and cranny we can get in and say, hey, y'all, you know, come out, support, show love to the entertainment community.
03:20And so it just, you know, it takes a lot of coordination, dedication, just really inconsistency.
03:27Like, as long as you, if we didn't get this one thing done and we needed to get done, okay, we need to do it tomorrow.
03:32But either way, we're getting something done every single day.
03:34Like, every day we come back to it or we're talking about something or connecting with somebody.
03:40So it's been a really great experience.
03:42I feel like every year we would like to do this.
03:44So I think each year it'll get bigger and better every single time.
03:48That was my next question.
03:49I'm like, okay, so when can we expect the next one?
03:51We don't know yet.
03:51I know.
03:51We got to get through this one first.
03:52We do have to get through this one.
03:54Definitely.
03:55Because our date and our venue was chosen all along with the theme, like I said, it's National Flower Giving Day.
04:02It's at the Garden Theater.
04:04And Deja is a florist.
04:05So she's with us for the aesthetics of everything floral.
04:09Everything is just about growth and beauty.
04:11So we may have it on May 15th next year as well.
04:16But like she said, we'll just see what's going on.
04:18But we do like to keep every piece of our planning intentional.
04:22Very intentional.
04:23Absolutely.
04:24I mean, that's perfect.
04:24I mean, if you do this every year, just a different concept.
04:27Or even if it's the same concept.
04:28That'll be, it's one like no other.
04:30So honestly, regardless of the win-win, I think this is going to be great.
04:33I know it's going to be great.
04:34And it's going to open the doors to something bigger.
04:36Because this is just one, but then as you keep going, years to come, it's going to grow into something better.
04:42I can't wait to see it.
04:44Where can people go to get tickets?
04:46I know, are there still nominations?
04:49Are there still able to be nominated?
04:51Definitely.
04:52They can follow us on Instagram on the Flourish Awards.
04:55And they can go on to www.flourish.com, awards.com, to get the tickets as well as nominate people.
05:02The nomination will be going on until the 11th?
05:05Is it May 11th?
05:05Yes.
05:05So after May 11th, it will be no more new submissions or anything on the ballot.
05:10So another thing with our award show is a lot of the award shows in our city turn into popularity contests.
05:17Okay, say that again.
05:18It's more of just a, hey, however many votes I can pull in type of situation.
05:23So we actually curated a committee of people that work in the entertainment industry who submitted our nominees.
05:30And then we had one open ending on the ballot in case anybody that we miss.
05:35Again, this is our first one.
05:36I'm sure we make many mistakes or room for improvement.
05:39So we wanted to still let the city have that open up.
05:42And each day, if whoever has the most amount of submissions in that category, they get added to the ballot.
05:48And so, yeah, on Monday, our top three will be announced.
05:51Okay, yeah, because I was looking at the different categories.
05:53And I was just really impressed because it's just like, okay, I knew I was going to see some DJs and everything.
05:58But I did not know, like, gardening, floral, everybody, just the behind the scenes.
06:03You really did go break it down.
06:05Like, what made you choose these categories?
06:08Literally just because?
06:10With the theme floral.
06:11And as far as our theme and aesthetics, it's going to be a lot of flowery, garden.
06:16When you come, when you think about your wardrobe, I want to think about you expressing yourself in a garden.
06:20Garden full of flowers.
06:23Rather, fellas, you want to wear a suit, pants, tie, ladies' dress, pastel colors, anything incorporating floral.
06:30You're not turning no one away.
06:32I know that's where it's going to be a whole vibe.
06:34Yes, definitely.
06:34It's going to make you feel like you in the garden.
06:36Definitely.
06:37I love that.
06:37Come express yourself in the garden.
06:38Okay, come express yourself in the garden.
06:40And with that, I think, like, the themes, and, I mean, maybe Kisa can speak more to this as well, but we wanted to stay in alignment with the floral theme, right, and naming each of the categories.
06:52And then in terms of the categories themselves, I feel like they are just in alignment with the overall perspective of highlighting the people behind the scenes.
07:00So, like, what positions make a major difference or impact in a show, in a festival, in a concert, in the entertainment space, in a film, in a photo shoot, and highlighting those.
07:14Because I'm sure, again, like we've said, this is going to be a year, an annual thing.
07:20So, like, we will probably expand that as well.
07:22There's so many different things that you can get into, you know, when you go behind the scenes.
07:26It's like, you have your creative directors, you have your stage managers, you have your writers, you have your makeup artists, your nail techs, and so all of those things, you can kind of really get into the nitty gritty, you know?
07:37So, when you really break it down, when you think about it, it's just like, can you imagine next year?
07:42Oh, my God, like, it's going to be rolling in.
07:45I'm excited.
07:46I want to just submit just because.
07:47Oh, and while we're on the categories, I do want to talk about our special honorees.
07:51Oh, please.
07:52Please mention everyone.
07:55So, it was like, when the list of the nominations came out, it was a lot of amazing people on there.
07:59It was hard to cut down.
08:00I was just about to say, how did you cut down?
08:02Hard to know what was going on, but a few people, I was like, you know,
08:07I really want to highlight them something different because when I look at this list,
08:11I see so many people that these people are connected to or have helped to be able to be eligible even for the list.
08:18And so, I want to give a big, big, big shout out to Mikey Eckstein.
08:22Mikey and I go back a few years.
08:24We actually met through some other friends that we work with.
08:27And from the day I've met him, it's just been like, if I call, he coming.
08:31And I really, really, really appreciate that.
08:34And what made me want to honor Mikey is because he just isn't that way with me.
08:39It's with anybody that's in his network.
08:41I don't care who it is.
08:42If you got something that you're doing and Mikey feel like in some type of way,
08:46even if it don't fit what he's doing, if he feel like this is no clash of the platform,
08:50he's going to put you out there.
08:52He's going to support you.
08:53And I think that that's something that, especially nowadays, people are,
08:57I just told my client this earlier.
08:59I said, don't look at stuff as like, oh, I'm doing too much.
09:01Like, I can't keep reaching out or can't do this or do that.
09:04Because it's like, if you haven't made it to where you want to be
09:07or you don't have too much money, you need to do too much more.
09:10So, you know.
09:12You got to go just that harder.
09:13That's just what it is.
09:15And I'm just grateful that Mikey is always an example of that.
09:18Like, no matter what space I'm in, no matter how many people above me that I can reach and call,
09:23you know, I'm still going to show the people that's on their way to somewhere,
09:25like, hey, we can all connect.
09:27We can all help each other.
09:27And that's really what my brand is about and what the award show is about.
09:31So, it was like, no way Mikey wasn't getting, you know, honored.
09:35And since we told him that he's been getting honored, he's been so excited.
09:38He got us on the news.
09:39Oh, that's right.
09:40Like, love the love.
09:41Like, he is the greatest.
09:42And I also want to give a huge, huge shout out to GT.
09:48GT has been at this for decades, it seems like.
09:52Oh.
09:52Yeah.
09:53A lot of people don't know, but he, he's been, he's been with it.
09:56Like, he did, like, Mr. Allen's commercials as a kid.
09:59But I know him as far as what he's doing in the entertainment industry with the artist that's coming up these days.
10:05I haven't touched a newer artist that's from Detroit in the last maybe four or five years that in some type of way GT hasn't helped.
10:12And I don't think a lot of people realize that.
10:16I don't think, you know, I think maybe he does realize it, but it's just like, it's not a thing that people talk about.
10:22He's humble.
10:22Yeah, it's just not a thing they talk about.
10:24But to be totally honest, him, and I could name a few others, but I'm going to hold off because we're probably going to honor them as well.
10:30But, you know, they are really big influences on what shaped our music sound right now.
10:36But not just the sound, the, like, culture of, you know, a lot of people didn't want to mess with Detroit artists.
10:41We always had the flavor, but we had the fear, too.
10:44Okay, yeah.
10:45You know, and they made it cool to be like, you know, we're going to make sure all our friends can share our platform.
10:50We're going to teach the people next to us what we know.
10:53So I think that because of what those guys and they camp really did and made big, it opened up so many doors for music for us right now.
11:01And even if rappers that's right now out haven't worked with them, they walk through that door.
11:06Oh, that's right.
11:06They definitely made it where other people outside of Detroit feel comfortable coming and working with us.
11:12And that's like a lot of people take that for granted, and I don't.
11:16I know that's right.
11:16So even with them passing, yeah.
11:19They met GQ.
11:20GT.
11:21GT.
11:22I'm sorry.
11:22Forgive me, GT.
11:23Yes, call me GT on Instagram.
11:25He actually got his own facility there.
11:27He just opened up a beautiful studio.
11:29So make sure y'all go and check that out.
11:30He's also doing a summer camp for the kids.
11:32I don't know a lot of details about the summer camp.
11:35But check his page out, and you can find out more about it, I'm sure.
11:39Oh, nice.
11:40Okay.
11:40So he's going to be, he's one of the special honorees.
11:42Yes.
11:43Okay.
11:43Excited for that.
11:44And then, again, it's going down May 15th at the Garden Theater.
11:49Yeah.
11:49Okay.
11:49It's next Thursday at 6 p.m.
11:51is when the doors open.
11:52We'll have red carpet.
11:54We'll have hors d'oeuvres.
11:55We'll have full media.
11:57So come and see your who's who's coming at work.
11:59Come and eat with us.
12:00Take some pictures.
12:01And enjoy.
12:02Have a time and live in the garden.
12:03Bunch of surprises.
12:04Absolutely.
12:05And quick shout out, because we do have to just mention our sponsors.
12:09Absolutely.
12:10Her Social Room, Cocktails and Glam, Mini Boss Kids, William Palmer, Keen Smize, and The Lash Mother.
12:18So thank y'all.
12:19Thank you to our sponsors.
12:21We love y'all.
12:22Yes.
12:22We appreciate y'all.
12:23Thank you, ladies, so much.
12:25And before you go, I got one more question.
12:27Okay.
12:27Now, what is one thing that you hope that people remember about this ceremony?
12:32That they never seen this before.
12:34Okay.
12:35Period.
12:36That's your mic, man.
12:37Because you was ready and you did that one.
12:39That was it.
12:39That's all it is.
12:41They ain't never seen it like this.
12:42Okay.
12:42Period.
12:44So look, if you missed it, you're going to be back next year.
12:46So Detroit avant-garde.
12:48Like, every part of our thing is like, we went out, we went stylish, but we ain't never forget a touch of our city in any corner.
12:54I can't wait till y'all can see.
12:57I'm looking forward to it.
12:58Ladies, it was a pleasure.
13:00Thank you so much, Big Hay.
13:01Thank you, everybody.
13:03It's 105 When The Bounce.
