We meet some very polite lovely pupils as we visit St Marys School in Albrighton for our: Love Your School.
Transcript
00:00This is Millivie Jones, what a wonderful school you have here, St Mary's CV Primary School in Old Brighton.
00:07First of all, we like to ask everyone this, who's in charge of the schools, what do you love most about your school?
00:13I love that our school is a really caring, kind, loving community where all the children take care of each other,
00:21they're well behaved, they've got really good values and they really want to be here to learn
00:26and everybody is welcome at our school and cares for each other.
00:30It's a nice place to be.
00:31We were just speaking about your values inside, worship's a big thing here at the school, isn't it, for you?
00:36It definitely is. We have a vision for our school and all our children and staff subscribe to it,
00:42so that's about whatever you do, work at it with all your heart.
00:46That comes from Colossians in the Bible.
00:48And then we have three core values that we promote and our children live out on a daily basis.
00:53They are love, courage and forgiveness and they're really important in everything that we do, they underpin everything.
01:00Thank you so sweet. Thank you for the food we eat. Thank you for the work that we sing, that sing.
01:06Thank you for everything. We close our eyes. We thank, we bow our heads. We thank, we thank you, Lord, for daily bread. Amen.
01:18That's lovely. Another thing that strikes me is your links to the community.
01:24Tell everyone about the connections you have with Albrighton at the school.
01:27So we try really hard to work closely with the Albrighton community.
01:31We are currently involved with several projects. So one of them is a reverging project to increase biodiversity.
01:39We're supporting the Scouts in doing that. Lots of our children attend Scouts.
01:44And over the Easter holidays, our children are going to be taking a seed bag home with newspaper pots in to grow seeds.
01:50And then at the end of May, they're going to be involved in a community planting day for that.
01:55With these bulbs, they're going to turn into beautiful flowers, but we can plant all around the owl area.
02:01And we also hosted this year a D-Day celebration where we had members of the British Legion attending and we had children from Albrighton Primary attending as well, which was really lovely.
02:12We had a picnic in our outdoor woodland learning area for it.
02:15Oh, that sounds great. Now, being very close to RAF Cosford, it'd be interesting to know what links have you got to there, if any?
02:21Well, we've got lots of, several of our children are from RAF Cosford families, but actually today, for example, RAF Cosford are in our school with Year 5 doing a STEM day full of activities for them.
02:33So we try really hard to develop links and build links. We take the children on trips there.
02:39RAF Cosford are very good at offering us workshops and practical things that link to our curriculum as well.
02:44What a wonderful library you have. We've just been speaking to your lovely headteacher, but I'm interested to find out what do you love the most about your school?
02:52We'll start and go left to right. What do you think the best thing is about your school?
02:56They're, like, they all, like, care, like...
03:02It's okay. What about yourself?
03:05So, um, when something's gone wrong in your life or something, somebody's there to comfort you or support you?
03:13Oh, that's lovely. What about yourself, Tommy?
03:15Personally, I think the best thing about this school is that, like, the emotional support they have, like, what they do to take care of others.
03:25That's lovely. What about yourself?
03:26I just like how everyone in the school is really kind and caring.
03:30Oh, yeah. Headteacher said a lot about that. You've been doing some things in the community as well, I hear.
03:34Are you all going to be taking seeds home and growing them over Easter, I hear?
03:38Yeah.
03:39Do you have a lot of involvement, do you think, in the community? Do you have lots of trips that you like as well?
03:43Yeah.
03:44Have you got any in particular that you want to tell me about?
03:46Oh, so we're doing a musical at the end of the year, which we do every year, and we're doing a story from the Bible, and we're going to go watch it, which is a trip that I think everyone's really excited about.
03:59Oh, that's great, yeah, and I'm sure you'll have a great time. Now, finally, we're in the lovely library that's had some work done to it.
04:05You're all librarians here, aren't you? Tell me about your role, then. What are you doing here?
04:09We're really just sorting books until half past twelve, when everyone comes in and takes books.
04:19Oh, that's lovely. Do you think you've learnt quite a lot from having that responsibility, do you mean?
04:24Yeah, yeah.
04:25That's great. Now, inside the school, we've just been speaking off camera, lots of things have gone on since you've become head of the school in September 2023,
04:31and one of the things that sticks out in my brain is you've recently really done the library. Tell us about that.
04:36We have. We've got a beautiful library, which is really lovely in a primary school because space is very precious.
04:43We have been able to restock it with books because our children took part in a sponsored read-a-thon,
04:49and us Born Books were able to do some match funding for us, so we've just had lots of new books.
04:54We also were able to restock it with books from the Scholastic Book Fair and commissions that we got,
05:00and our Year 6 children are librarians and open the library every day for half an hour for children to go in and change their books.
05:09And very soon we are due to have £5,000 worth of new books delivered through a really kind donation from our PTA and their fundraising activities.
05:17Oh, that's brilliant. Well, we look forward to looking around at the rest of the school and seeing what's on offer.
05:22Hello, we're the St Mary's Football Team.
05:26We're through to the South Shropshire County Final.
05:30And who's going to win? St Mary's!
05:34St Mary's!
05:35.
05:37It's great.
05:38Nice!
