00:00Thousands of slaughtered farm animals are set to be buried in a small town in northern
00:07Hungary near the border with Austria.
00:11They were ordered to be killed after an outbreak of foot and mouth disease on a farm in Laval.
00:17It can take up to 10 days before all of the cattle animals are slaughtered.
00:21A huge animal mass grave was excavated for the more than 3,000 animals.
00:27In addition to lime and straw, a two-metre layer of soil will be placed over the carcasses.
00:34But some locals are concerned that the carcasses could contaminate groundwater.
00:38The disease was identified last Wednesday, after which the decision was taken to call
00:59the animals.
01:01Police officers are checking that only vets and workers are allowed on the affected premises.
01:08The owner of the Western Gate Cooperative, an Austrian-born Hungarian citizen, has been
01:12keeping animals in Laval for 30 years.
01:16Now his entire farm could be at risk.
01:19All the cattle on the farm needs to be slaughtered, despite only 5 per cent of the herd being
01:24infected.
01:52The mass culling of healthy cattle can also be very emotionally distressing for livestock
01:57farmers.
01:58Trucks arriving at and leaving the farm are also disinfected.
02:29Another outbreak of foot and mouth disease has also been detected in Slovakia, with trucks
02:33having to pass through a disinfectant at the border crossing with Hungary.
02:38The village behind me is facing a 1.5 billion HUF fine for slaughtering all the animals.
02:5250,000 litres of milk are taken from here every day, which means a huge loss of food.
02:53The government has promised to compensate, but it is questionable what this will be used
02:54for.
