00:48Earlier today, The Atlantic Magazine released a stunning and alarming report
00:56about the accidental leaking of the Trump administration's coordination
01:01on classified military operations targeting the Houthis in Yemen.
01:06According to the report, a member of the press was somehow added to an unsecured text chain
01:14with the Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of State,
01:19the CIA Director, and other national security officials.
01:25The text chain was not a secure conversation.
01:30The app used is not approved for discussing classified military operations.
01:37Nevertheless, on this text chain, conversations went at length
01:42about imminent military operations, including specific targets, weapons, and attack plans.
01:50These text messages very likely included classified U.S. intelligence.
01:56And the entire time, nobody seemed to realize that a private citizen
02:01without security clearance had access to this conversation.
02:06Mr. President, this is one of the most stunning breaches of military intelligence
02:12I have read about in a very, very long time.
02:17What we have here are senior U.S. leaders, including the Vice President and Secretary of Defense,
02:23having classified discussions of military action over an unsecure app.
02:30It's bad enough that a private citizen was added to this chain.
02:35But it's far worse that sensitive military information was exchanged on an unauthorized application,
02:44especially when that sensitive military information was so, so important.
02:51If these detailed exchanges about coordinating military operations fell into the hands of America's enemies,
02:58it could get people killed. It could severely harm our military.
03:03It would put America's national security in danger.
03:09This debacle requires a full investigation into how this happened,
03:17the damage it created, and how we can avoid it in the future.
03:23If our nation's military secrets are being peddled around over unsecure text chains,
03:29we need to know that at once, and we need to put a stop to it immediately.
03:34Every single senator, Republican and Democrat and independent, must demand accountability.
03:43If a government employee shared sensitive military plans like this,
03:49they'd be investigated and face very harsh consequences.
03:54Again, this kind of carelessness is how people get killed.
03:58It's how our enemies can take advantage of us.
04:01It's how our national security falls into danger.
04:06If you were up in arms over unsecure e-mails years ago,
04:13you should certainly be outraged by this amateurish behavior.
04:18I ask that Leader Thune and my Republican colleagues work with Democrats right away
04:25to hold a full investigation into why these military operations were coordinated over an unauthorized messaging service
04:33instead of the secure communications channels funded by taxpayers.
04:39And I want to finish with this.
04:42When Pete Hegseth became before the Senate as a nominee,
04:46Democrats warned that something like this might happen.
04:50These people are clearly not up for the job.
04:54We warned confirming them was dangerous, that they'd behave recklessly.
04:59Unfortunately, we were right.
05:02Now we must have accountability,
05:04and both parties in the Senate should investigate how this blunder was even possible.
