What would you see in the Supercross pits if you had an all-access pass? Here's part five of swap's day at the 2019 Anaheim Two Supercross.
Transcript
00:00Do you have the smaller ones, because that one is a little too big.
00:05Like I feel like I should be getting like a Venge Vias, a freaking S-Works Tarmac, like
00:12I need a Stump Jumper, I need all kinds of stuff for this placement right here.
00:16I need it all.
00:17Wait.
00:18When is that going to get on TV?
00:25Hopefully no one sees the top of my head because I'll be freaking Superman flying somewhere.
00:29I don't know, we need to discuss placement.
00:34I want a smaller one to go right here in the front, you know, for some television.
00:41Like how much does Mathis pay for the 12-in-1 match?
00:43I get bonuses.
00:44Bonuses for what, photos?
00:47No.
00:49If I win anything, like if I'm in B practice and I win the freaking practice, I get a huge
00:56bonus.
00:57Yeah?
00:58Top step.
01:00What about LCQ?
01:01If I win anything, bonus.
01:03Nice.
01:04Yeah.
01:05Just break the bank.
01:06So, how's it going to go tonight?
01:10Three mains.
01:11I don't know, I mean.
01:13Wait, did you make the mains?
01:15Yes, I made the mains, but dude, by like that much.
01:20Two one-thousandths of a second.
01:22I qualified 18th, so I don't have to go to the LCQ, so I'm 18th right now.
01:27Yeah, three main events.
01:28Just get a good start, be consistent on all of them, get a good overall.
01:31You know, it's going to be crazy, so just set ourselves up.
01:36What color are Shredded Dave's pants tonight?
01:40Navy blue, I guess.
01:42They've got holes in them.
01:43They look like, I don't know, she's got.
01:44Oh, they're jeans?
01:45Yeah, they're jeans.
01:46But she's the yoga pants world champion, I guess.
01:49Yeah.
01:53What's up, Swap?
01:54What are you doing?
01:56Stickering up new helmets.
01:57Yeah.
02:00I might blow my cover.
02:01People might think this is painted on here.
02:04And my head's crooked, so they're never straight.
02:08I know.
02:09Yup.
02:10When did the goggles around the neck on the podium start?
02:12Dude, way before me.
02:14I'm going to guess it had to be Bevo or someone like that.
02:18But yeah, it's pretty good for us.
02:20It looks really uncomfortable.
02:22Some guys are super rookie about it, too.
02:24Upside down, never get any good logo.
02:29Nice.
02:30There's an art to the goggle podium.
02:32Okay, so it looks like the guys are wearing orange helmets tonight.
02:35Yeah.
02:36They got all orange goggles?
02:38Yeah, all orange.
02:39I was kind of nervous they were going to wear their gear from last week in practice,
02:43and it would have been kind of wonky since it's red, but.
02:46Well, you said wonky.
02:47Yeah.
02:48Dude, Casey says that word, and I thought it was a fake word that he made up.
02:51Well, I mean, I'm no editor, but.
02:54Yeah.
02:55So we're going all orange.
02:56I saw Adam had his orange gear on, so it looks sweet.
02:59James Dobb.
03:00What's happening?
03:02Dobb, James Dobb.
03:04You know, after you quit racing motocross, how'd the modeling career go?
03:07That didn't go too well.
03:09Started babysitting.
03:12That went alright.
03:14Then, luckily, I just got, the last few years I've been working on a few movies.
03:19A friend bought us in, so I've been doing a few of them as well.
03:22Really?
03:23So what's your main, what takes up the bulk of your time now?
03:26You're aging now, aren't you?
03:28Yeah, I've been, I.E., the babysitting, and I've been doing that for a while,
03:33but the main bulk now, realistically, is the movie stuff.
03:37Really?
03:38Yeah.
03:39I've got Billy Bolt and Conrad Muse still in.
03:42Billy's like the World Endurance Super Extreme Champion,
03:46so it's been great with him.
03:48And then Conrad's a young kid that's coming through in the U.K. right now,
03:52so it's good times.
03:55How much time do you spend on a motorbike yourself?
03:59Offset, not very much.
04:01But then, I'd just come off Star Wars,
04:04and we spent a hell of a lot of time on one there,
04:07so it was cool.
04:09Good to see you, buddy.
04:11How's the test of time?
04:14It's there.
04:15It hasn't faded?
04:16No, I got fatter, though, so it kind of rolls down like this.
04:20Let's see it.
04:21All right.
04:22I even got my pants low, so.
04:26It's 90s moto.
04:28You guys don't know about that, this day and age.
04:30You know, my buddy Dahmer's got one.
04:33He just says it's the start of my back piece.
04:35Dude, every bitchin' back piece has a foundation.
04:42So I just gotta, you know.
04:44So Regis, what's up?
04:45How's stunt life?
04:46Oh, I love it.
04:47It's jammin'.
04:48What are you working on right now?
04:51I'm doing a movie that I'm not supposed to say what we're doing,
04:56but it rhymes with Breaking Bad movie.
05:00Hey, I had a taste of stunt life years ago.
05:03Yeah?
05:04Rich Taylor got me in on the…
05:06The Charlie's Angels music video?
05:08No, no, no.
05:09It was a Samsung Super Bowl commercial.
05:11Oh, nice.
05:12And I had to jump a dirt bike on the cement off of a freestyle ramp.
05:15No way.
05:16It was the most horrifying day of my life.
05:19I don't want your life, Reg.
05:20The motorcycle stuff is all right.
05:22It's the other stuff that scares the shit out of me.
05:24Stuff out of me.
05:25Yeah.
05:26You cut your teeth as a 125 supercross rider.
05:29Oh man, those were scary days.
05:30What do you think about coming to the races now and seeing the guys on 250s
05:34and busting all the triples?
05:36It's unbelievable.
05:37It really is.
05:38The sport, the speed has gone exponentially faster.
05:42It's been a while since I've been back here, even at Anaheim.
05:47Even this second round, I still get the jitters sitting there in the stands.
05:51But these guys are on a whole other level.
05:53It's different than when I used to try to make main events.
05:57All right, so in the stunt world, you started off doing a lot of dirt bike stunts,
06:01but you branched off into other things too, right?
06:03Yeah, yeah.
06:04I've been lucky enough to kind of make my way into the right group of people
06:09and the right shows on motorcycles, and now it's kind of anything and everything.
06:15So whatever they ask me to do, I'll try to do it.
06:19All right, so to the people watching this,
06:22what is the most famous or iconic role you played on dirt bike?
06:26Was it motocross?
06:28Weren't you the chick?
06:29I was.
06:30That was my first ever job.
06:32I was still riding for KTM in 2000, and we did that at the end of the year.
06:36And it was the Disney show motocross.
06:39I showed up and was just working the background.
06:42And I was at my hometown track, Verona Oaks,
06:45and by the time we got done riding the first little session,
06:48they came and asked me if I wanted to be a part of the movie.
06:51And I did, but I didn't know they were going to have me stunt double the girl.
06:54My first 11 jobs were stunt doubling girls.
06:57Do you wear fake boobs when you do that?
06:59Absolutely.
07:00Continuity.
07:02Goes along with the back piece.
07:04Exactly.
07:05Exactly.
07:06Had the shirt flapping in the wind.
07:08Nice.
07:09Worked out.
07:10Good to see you, Reed.
07:11Good to see you, buddy.
07:13You know you love the camera.
07:14No, I don't like cameras.
07:15Come on.
07:16You miss it.
07:17You miss it.
07:18No, I don't.
07:19So you're testing for the factory Pro Circuit Monster Energy team, right?
07:23Yeah.
07:24Yeah, doing all their testing the last two years.
07:27I started working with them again last year
07:29and helping them develop the bike and doing all their testing for them.
07:32Is that mostly suspension or motor or both?
07:34Yeah, the whole thing.
07:35Ground up, whatever comes up that needs to be addressed, we go test it
07:39and try to make it better for the boys.
07:42So far, I feel like it's been working.
07:44I feel like the bike's good.
07:46As you saw last week, Adam had a great weekend
07:48and showed, I feel like, what the bike's capable of,
07:50and hopefully we keep that going.
07:52How does that process work?
07:54They'll send you out on the bike,
07:56and you get a good baseline that you think works well?
07:58Yeah, like this season, we started in about October for this coming season
08:02and kind of had a plan of attack
08:04on what we were going to try to accomplish coming into the year
08:07and got that done.
08:08And then we present it to the guys that are racing.
08:11Like this year, everything went well.
08:13Everybody was happy with it right off the bat.
08:15Each guy might tweak it a little bit for themselves,
08:17but pretty much we're all on the same stuff.
08:20Do you try to emulate any rider's riding style
08:25to see if it would work for them
08:26or, like, one guy sit further forward or further back?
08:30That's a thing.
08:31Every guy's size-wise is different and riding style,
08:34so you've got to kind of have that in your head a little bit.
08:37I don't only focus on what works for me
08:39because it might not work for the other guy,
08:41but I feel like if your window's big enough on the setting
08:45to where it'll work with everybody,
08:47I feel like you're in a good spot.
08:48I feel like that's where we're at right now with the bike,
08:50and hopefully it shows for more wins.
08:53Out of the four riders, which of them were you the closest for?
08:57Who changed it the least?
08:59I don't know. That'd be a good question for the guys.
09:01I feel like everybody's pretty close on everything,
09:03just maybe for their weight, spring rate.
09:07I feel like as far as suspension settings, motor settings,
09:10all the chassis stuff,
09:11everybody's pretty much on the same equipment.
09:14All right, so here's a question for you.
09:17How do these bikes compare to the bikes
09:19that you won championships on under this tent?
09:22It's changed a lot.
09:23I have a couple of them in my garage,
09:252004 and 2005 championship bikes,
09:27and 2004 was the first year of the Cowie 4-stroke.
09:31It was a steel frame, and it was 15 years ago.
09:35That bike was pretty good.
09:36The boys did a good job on it for what it was for the time,
09:39but obviously they learned a lot over the years,
09:42and it's pretty crazy to see how fast the 250 is these days.
09:47Really, though, how does it compare?
09:49Is it head and shoulders better than what you had back then?
09:52It'd be hard to say,
09:53but it'd be kind of funny to take one of those old ones out
09:55on the track and do a side-by-side comparison.
09:58I'm sure 15 years, it's developed a lot,
10:01and we've learned a lot.
10:03It's cool to still be riding these cool bikes.
10:06You're one of the last guys to win on a 125 title, right?
10:10I won on a Yamaha Troy 125 in 2003.
10:14Actually, in 2005, when I won the outdoor title,
10:17it was still called the 125 class,
10:19actually the last 125 considered class, 05.
10:23Back then, when you were racing a 125,
10:26if someone had said,
10:27hey, someday it's going to be four strokes,
10:29would you have been like, nah?
10:31The four strokes back then were weak.
10:33Yeah, and I was kind of anti-four stroke,
10:35old-school two-stroke guy,
10:37until I actually hopped on a legit one
10:39and saw what it was capable of.
10:41Even my first year in the big class,
10:43I signed my Suzuki deal thinking I was going to ride a 250 two-stroke.
10:46Now it's kind of the year it switched,
10:48it was in 06,
10:49everybody jumped on four strokes,
10:51and no one's really looked back since.
10:53What are you doing March 21st through 24th?
10:57March 21st.
10:58You don't have to go all the way.
10:59I don't know, is it a weekend?
11:00Yeah, it's a weekend.
11:01Why, what do you got, what are you thinking?
11:02You should come out and race the Trans Am,
11:04or that race.
11:05Okay.
11:06Alright, well hit me up.
11:07How old are you?
11:08Is it old bikes?
11:09How old are you now?
11:10I'm 37.
11:1137, so you can race 30 pro and 35 pro.
11:14Okay.
11:15Is it old bikes or is it vintage?
11:16Modern bikes.
11:17Modern bikes.
11:18Alright, I'll tell the boys to build me a 450.
11:19Nice.
11:20Right on, Sauce, thanks.
11:21See ya.
11:22I was just talking to Hot Sauce about his role as a tester, right?
11:25Yeah.
11:26So when you got on the baseline setting that he set up for you,
11:29how much did you have to change?
11:31Honestly, just the weight status since I'm a bit heavier,
11:34but I didn't have to change too much on it.
11:36The frame that we changed was amazing,
11:38and out of the whole bike set up we've been running,
11:40it's pretty good,
11:41so I haven't had to change much since.
11:43So I guess as a former Supercross champion,
11:46baseline testing is pretty good.
11:48Oh yeah, for sure.
11:49He knows his stuff, so whatever he does or tries out,
11:53I trust him on it.
11:55Cool, so we've got two races under your belt.
11:57How are you feeling about Supercross?
11:59Feeling pretty good.
12:00It was a little tight my first two rounds.
12:02Hopefully just loosening up for the next couple coming up.
12:05A 6th place at A1 and I think a 9th in Phoenix.
12:09Hopefully a better finish for this one top 5.
12:13Was there any kind of weird things you had to learn
12:17or get used to racing Supercross?
12:19Mainly just getting the rhythms down a bit quicker than usual.
12:23Yeah, that was about it.
12:25Just getting the whoops down,
12:27still struggling on those a little bit,
12:29but we're clicking along, so it should be pretty good.
12:32I heard really good things about you for the whole off season,
12:35about how fast you were going and everything.
12:37Yeah, I've been feeling great.
12:39Right on, good luck tonight.
12:42Good luck.
