00:00I have a question about Social Security.
00:02President promises not to touch Social Security, yet the acting commissioner, Leland Dudek,
00:08reportedly plans drastic cuts, closure of offices, reducing staff, and eliminating the
00:14option of applying for benefits by phone.
00:16What is Congress doing to prevent these draconian changes?
00:20The answer is not enough with the majority that's in control right now.
00:24It is a fact that the great majority of Republicans in Congress ran their campaigns with a promise
00:33to not cut Social Security and to not cut Medicare, and many of them to not even cut
00:40Medicaid.
00:42When they violate that, you cannot let them go from that promise.
00:46Many of you are probably familiar with Lauren Underwood.
00:49She's a wonderful woman.
00:53The reason she's a member of Congress is she got lied to by her member of Congress.
00:58The gentleman representing her in Congress promised her at a town hall that he would
01:04never vote for something that took away coverage for pre-existing condition, and he lied.
01:09He did that.
01:10And that was it.
01:11That was what Lauren Underwood said.
01:13That's it.
01:14I am running against this call.
01:15And she beat him.
01:16And in surprise, I have nothing to do with this.
01:21This is what happens, should happen, when a member of Congress from either party just
01:27stands up and says something they know is not true.
01:30You know, this is something, you know, I'm a scientist, and I have a very hard line about
01:34people that deliberately lie.
01:36Because if you're a scientist and you stand up and say something you know is not true,
01:39it's a career-ending thing.
01:41You know, you will lose your tenure.
01:43No one will ever publish anything.
01:45It is just not an acceptable thing.
01:47I think that scientists take a hard line about that because we are always operating right
01:53on the edge of what is known.
01:55You know, the statistical significance of our data sets is marginal.
01:58There's lots of uncertainty in what we're doing, but we cannot tolerate the additional
02:02uncertainties to whether someone presenting their data is just flat out lying.
02:06And so we don't tolerate it.
02:08And it's one of the things that, you know, makes me sleep not so well at night when I
02:14see politicians getting away with flat out lies.
02:17And so, that's one of the things.
