00:00I think that's my mother's house. I've never met her.
00:02Donna passed away. A few months back it was.
00:05It was an accident. A storm hit me.
00:08This is Donna Brown. I'm at sea.
00:11She was talking about scattering her dad's ashes just on the beach out here.
00:15Well, if that's true, why did she then decide to scatter them out at sea instead?
00:18Has Selwyn told you about what's happening tomorrow?
00:21The person taking over from him arrives.
00:24I wish you the very best for everything you do.
00:26The commissioner gave me the go-ahead to reopen my mum's case.
00:29I've already been down the harbour, putting up posters, asking any new witnesses to come forward.
00:34The thing that really gets me with this, why would anyone want her dead?

01:03Morning, Donna.
01:05Morning, Jamal.
01:17Look at you.
01:19Hidden in the dark there.
01:21It's not right, is it?
01:35MUSIC
01:41Maybe it's time I let you go.

02:33Harbourmaster?
02:35This is Donna Bray.
02:37I'm at sea. I need your help.
02:39No!
02:41What are your coordinates?
02:43I have no GPS. There's no land in sight.
02:45I don't know where I am.
02:47Hello?
02:49Hello?

04:01So this Kearse, the inspector's mother,
04:05must be really tough for him.
04:07I reckon at most.
04:09All I really want to help him solve it is just...
04:13All we know is that she drowned at sea.
04:17There's no weapon...
04:19..no suspect...
04:21..no apparent motive.
04:23Mm-hm.
04:27So what exactly are we searching her house for?
04:31You know what?
04:33I'm not entirely sure myself.
04:35But maybe you'll know when we find it.
04:39Mrs Clementson, we're moving forward
04:41with the investigation into Donna's death,
04:43so we might have some more questions.
04:45Oh, sorry.
04:47Um...
04:49Sorry.
04:51So you really think that someone might have killed her?
04:55We're working on that basis.
04:57Well, then, whatever questions you've got,
04:59you feel free to ask.
05:01Sarge?
05:03I've got the inspector on the line.
05:05He wants to speak with you.
05:07Said you're not answering your phone.
05:09Well, what's the point of voicemail if you're not going to use it?
05:11Sarge, got the inspector on the line.
05:13Wants to talk to you.
05:15Inspector on the line. Wants to talk to you.
05:17Said you're not answering the phone.
05:19How is he even doing that?
05:23I'm here, sir.
05:25What do you need?
05:27All right, thanks, Officer Rose. I've got it.
05:29DS Thomas.
05:31I've found something of interest.
05:33You should head back to the station.
05:35OK, well, I'm almost done.
05:37And he's hung up.
05:39You're Inspector Wilson, isn't he?
05:41Yes, he is.
05:45So I was going over my mum's phone records,
05:47and in the last year,
05:49this number kept coming up.
05:5117 phone calls, 28 texts.
05:53It was registered
05:55to
05:57a Roy Palmer.
05:59I recognise him.
06:01He runs and owns the fishing net.
06:03Asked the borrower out last night.
06:05Go figure. Anyway, I asked for the transcript
06:07of their text messages to be sent over,
06:09and it looks like they were friends,
06:11but it was the last text that
06:13Donna sent to Roy
06:15that caught my interest.
06:17Thanks for coming by.
06:19It was good to talk.
06:21That was sent two hours before she drowned,
06:23which tells me he must have visited her
06:25earlier that morning.
06:27So he's a possible new witness.
06:29Most definitely, yes.
06:37DS Thomas speaking.
06:39Okay.
06:41Thanks for letting me know.
06:43Sir, that was the lab.
06:45They've got the boat wreckage from storage.
06:47Thought we'd give it a second look.
06:52Are you heading to the harbour?
06:54Yes, I am.
07:09Ooh.
07:35So get yourself down there for some
07:37school dance hall vibes.
07:39Finally, just a word of warning.
07:41Some bad weather coming in today.
07:43Authorities have put
07:45a high-risk warning out
07:47overnight, saying there's a
07:49category 4 storm brewing up
07:51just off the east coast.
07:53So if you have any plans to head out to sea today,
07:55authorities are advising
07:57against it.
07:59Best thing is to stay inside
08:01and stay safe.
08:08DOOR KNOCKS
08:15Hey, Dawna.
08:17Rye?
08:19What are you doing here?
08:21I woke up this morning
08:23thinking about your dad.
08:25Doesn't get any easier, does it?
08:27It just made me want to
08:29come over, check in,
08:31see how you're doing.
08:33Come in.
08:35I'll make some ice tea.
08:40So you didn't know we were police
08:42when we were in last night?
08:44I make a point of not sticking my nose
08:46in my customers' business, Inspector.
08:48Fair enough.
08:50Unless they're talking cricket, in which case
08:52you cannot shut me up.
08:54My specialist subject, if I ever go on Mastermind.
08:56Are you a fan at all?
08:58I'm a football man myself.
09:00We were getting on so well!
09:03So this case we're working on,
09:05Dawna Bray,
09:07you knew her, right?
09:09Yeah, yeah.
09:11To be honest, it was her dad
09:13I was closer with. He was a regular here.
09:15And it was through him you met Dawna?
09:17Yeah.
09:19When Irvine got ill,
09:21dementia, she moved back in with him
09:23and that was about a year
09:25before he passed.
09:27I used to, you know, check in
09:29on the old boy pretty regularly
09:31and when we lost him, I just
09:33tried to be there for Dawna as well.
09:35It's just that
09:37Dawna texted you the day she died.
09:39Said,
09:41thanks for coming by, it was good to talk.
09:43Yeah, what that was, I...
09:45I'd popped round earlier that morning.
09:47You know, just to see how she was coping.
09:49And how was she coping?
09:51Well,
09:53still missing her dad dreadfully, of course.
09:55We both were.
09:57Still am.
09:59And did she mention to you
10:01she was thinking of scattering her dad's ashes
10:03that day?
10:05No, she mentioned that it'd been playing on her mind
10:07that she hadn't done it yet, but
10:09no more than that, no.
10:11I mean, obviously,
10:13if I'd known she was going to do it that day,
10:15I would have warned her against it.
10:17I'm going out to sea with a storm coming in.
10:21So she said to you she was going to scatter
10:23her dad's ashes at sea?
10:25She must have at some point.
10:27Some point, I suppose.
10:29Do you remember when?
10:31Not precisely, no.
10:33It's just that we know Dawna applied
10:35for a permit to scatter her dad's ashes
10:37on a beach, and that was two weeks
10:39before she went to sea.
10:41So I'm just trying to work out
10:43why and at what point
10:45she changed her mind.
10:47Yeah, no, I mean, that does seem strange.
10:49Yeah.
10:51Actually, now I come to think of it,
10:53I think
10:55probably
10:57maybe it was in that last week
10:59that she mentioned doing it at sea.
11:01I think.
11:03Yeah.
11:05Okay, well, um,
11:07thank you, Mr Palmer.
11:09If anything else
11:11comes to mind, you'll let us know, yeah?
11:13Look, Inspector, I...
11:15If you're treating Dawna's
11:17death as suspicious,
11:19what exactly do you think's happened?
11:21She...
11:23went out to sea in a storm and drowned.
11:25How could that possibly be anything
11:27other than a terrible accident?
11:29No, we're
11:31working on that.
11:33Thanks again, Mr Palmer.
11:35You've been very helpful.
11:51I just keep putting it off.
11:53It's like the final goodbye.
11:55I don't know if I'm ready for that.
11:57I mean, if it's any
11:59consolation at all,
12:01I was exactly the same when my
12:03mother passed.
12:05But when I finally did it,
12:07scattered her ashes,
12:09it just felt
12:11right,
12:13you know?
12:15Like a release
12:17for her
12:19and for me.
12:23Hey.
12:49Hey.
12:51Hey.
13:18That's it.
13:21Off you go.
13:27I need your help.
13:29No.
13:31What are your coordinates?
13:33I have no GPS.
13:35There's no land in sight.
13:37I don't know where I am.
13:39Evening, Inspector.
13:41Can we check the GPS
13:43on Dawna's phone? Verify the call
13:45came from where we think it did.
13:47You've just come back from the search?
13:49We didn't find anything
13:51of relevance to the case, I'm afraid.
13:53But, um, I did find
13:55these letters.
13:57Your mum sent them
13:5950 years ago, not long
14:01after giving birth to you.
14:03Right.
14:05And I think they're to your father.
14:07Charlie Wilson.
14:09You... you know him?
14:11I reached out
14:13not long before I came here.
14:15And, um...
14:17Yeah.
14:19He didn't want to know.
14:21It doesn't look like
14:23he got them, though, because they were sent back.
14:25I assume it was
14:27Dawna that opened the letters.
14:31I started
14:33reading one, but they're personal.
14:35I think they might explain
14:37why your mother gave you up.
14:45Well, I'll leave you to it.
14:47Mm-hm.
14:57Yeah.
15:01I'll maybe look
15:03at these tomorrow.
15:07Yeah.
15:09Definitely tomorrow.
15:17And it's the fact
15:19that Roy Palmer was the last person to speak
15:21to my mum before she went out to see Andrea.
15:23I mean,
15:25what exactly did he say to her?
15:29Oh, no. Please, not him.
15:31Good morning.
15:33My two favourite detectives.
15:35D.I. Wilson and
15:37Diaz.
15:39He's forgotten my name.
15:41Good to see you both.
15:43Definitely forgot my name.
15:45Mr Fox.
15:47Call me Sterling.
15:49I thought we only had the pleasure of your company
15:51every other Wednesday.
15:53I'll be around for a few days while I'm still getting up to speed.
15:55Well, aren't we the lucky ones?
15:57I love that about you Londoners.
15:59Pretend you're being all grumpy when you're not.
16:01Cracks me up.
16:03You know what? We should get a drink sometime, the two of us.
16:05Shoot that breeze kind of thing.
16:07Oh, that would be nice for you, sir.
16:09You'd like that, wouldn't you?
16:11Don't worry.
16:13I'll email my secretary right now.
16:15Something in the diary.
16:17So, uh, you were looking for something?
16:19I dropped by to pick up some case files.
16:21I'm reviewing all current
16:23and ongoing investigations.
16:25Officer Curtis kindly obliged.
16:27Anyway,
16:29I'll get out of your...
16:31here.
16:33Good to see you, Inspector.
16:35Yeah.
16:37You're doing it again.
16:39What are you doing?
16:41Excuse me, man.
16:49I cannot believe
16:51they got rid of the commissioner for...
16:53That ninny.
16:57Morning, team.
16:59Morning, sir.
17:01How are we doing here?
17:03Well,
17:05we started doing background on Roy Palmer.
17:07He moved to Samarie five years ago
17:09and bought the bar.
17:11Now, I reckon he needed to live his life in the UK.
17:13He had just been made redundant,
17:15recently divorced,
17:17and was also done
17:19for drunk driving.
17:21I wouldn't say he's exactly made a go of it
17:23financially since he got here.
17:25Check shows...
17:27Just a sec, sorry.
17:29Officer Rose, what are you doing?
17:31Oh, I saw something online.
17:33It said if there's something you don't want to forget,
17:35pretend you're holding a donut
17:37to remind you there's something you need to remember.
17:39It's called
17:41the donut technique.
17:43Okay.
17:45Financial checks show
17:47that Mr. Palmer
17:49has been overstretched on his mortgage
17:51and his business isn't bringing in
17:53enough to cover his outgoings.
17:55Okay. Interesting.
17:57All right, Officer Rose.
17:59Donut time?
18:01Jaja.
18:03All right.
18:05So, the passport records show
18:07that Roy Palmer has been to the island once before.
18:09But, like, ages ago.
18:11When, exactly?
18:13April 1974.
18:15He would have been 16 at the time.
18:17Stayed at the Palm Royal Hotel
18:19with his parents.
18:21April...74.
18:25That was nine months before I was born.
18:29You're...you're not saying
18:31Roy Palmer might be...
18:33No, I'm not.
18:35I know who my father is and he's not Roy Palmer.
18:37But it is a coincidence.
18:39Well, I asked immigration people
18:41to check out your mother
18:43and she was definitely on the island
18:45April 1974.
18:47Then your father must have been here, too.
18:49So, my mother,
18:51my father
18:53and Roy Palmer were here
18:55on St. Marie at the exact same time
18:57around 50 years ago.
19:01Thanks for coming in, Mr. Palmer.
19:03So, we know
19:05that Dawna Bray had a relationship
19:07with a teenage lad
19:09over 50 years ago.
19:11He was staying here with his family at the Palm Royal Hotel.
19:13As were you
19:15at the exact same time.
19:17Wow. That is some serious digging
19:19you've been doing.
19:21Well, the first thing to say is it was a very long time ago
19:23so the memory's a bit hazy,
19:25but yes, you're right.
19:27I did make friends with another lad who was staying at the Palm Royal.
19:29Charlie, his name was.
19:31We'd spend our days at the beach,
19:33you know, swimming,
19:35lazing about
19:37and there was a bar we hung out at
19:39called the Flying Fish.
19:41A young local girl
19:43worked there.
19:45Dawna.
19:47Oh, right. Right, so she worked there
19:49back then.
19:51Well, is that relevant?
19:53It's just that we know it's a place she used to
19:55go to more recently.
19:57I guess she liked, you know.
19:59I guess she had fond memories of the place.
20:01Anyway,
20:03she and Charlie just kind of
20:05hit it off.
20:07She started hanging out with us
20:09when she wasn't working
20:11and they had what I guess you'd call
20:13a kind of
20:15holiday romance.
20:17I mean,
20:19it was more than that.
20:21More?
20:23I think they fell in love.
20:25They lived together, saw each other every day
20:27and then when it came time
20:29for Charlie to go home,
20:31they had a very tearful
20:33goodbye.
20:35Okay, so fast forward 50 years.
20:37Why'd you come back here?
20:39I was
20:41having a tough time
20:43back in the UK
20:45and I had some redundancy money
20:47and I read about a bar, the fishing net
20:49being up for sale
20:51and I don't know.
20:53After all these years,
20:55it just felt right coming back to the island.
20:57And it was just chance.
20:59You buy a bar where Donna's father
21:01happened to drink.
21:03That's exactly what it was.
21:05And eventually you put two and two together.
21:07I knew that Irvine had a daughter
21:09but I didn't know her name
21:11and I never met her because she lived on another island.
21:13But then when she
21:15came back to care for him...
21:19It's a small world, isn't it?
21:23Out of curiosity,
21:25the day Donna Bray drowned,
21:27where were you when the storm hit?
21:29I was at the fishing net
21:31with regulars.
21:33We hold up there
21:35during the bad weather on.
21:37I'll give you their details.
21:41Alright, thank you for your help.
21:43Inspector?
21:45Dalton Lee and
21:47Nathan Armstrong both confirmed
21:49that they were with Roy Palmer
21:51at his bar the entirety
21:53of the storm.
21:55But interestingly, they
21:57said they had already given a statement.
21:59I recognised their names
22:01from the coroner's report.
22:03They were waiting at the bar for Roy to
22:05open up when they saw Donna heading out
22:07to sea. They called
22:09Dalton to warn her about the bad weather
22:11but she didn't hear. Roy arrived
22:13shortly after and opened up.
22:15It still comes back to
22:17Roy Palmer again.
22:19There's something not right about it.
22:21About him. About all of it.
22:35But I have no idea how he managed
22:37to kill a woman who seemingly ventured out
22:39to sea by herself in the middle of a storm
22:41and drown.
22:43Excuse me.
22:45Alright,
22:47Donut Boy, what have you got?
22:49Totally forgot
22:51about that.
22:53So, in April
22:551974,
22:57while Roy Palmer was on holiday
22:59with his family, Palm Royal Hotel
23:01reported a theft.
23:03One of their guests had a very expensive
23:05ring stolen.
23:07Now, it was never recovered,
23:09the perpetrator was never arrested
23:11and it was insured
23:13for 80
23:15thousand dollars.
23:17I'm sure it's worth a lot more now.
23:23I've seen this ring before.
23:25To you, Donna. Mom.
23:29DS Thomas, you're with me.
23:31Officer Rose, I want you to go back to Donna Bray's
23:33house, check all the photographs of her
23:35to see if she's wearing that ring in any of them.
23:37Alright.
23:43See?
23:45It's the same one.
23:47Same shape, same stone.
23:51Seb,
23:53talk to me.
23:55I've got some photos of Donna.
23:57She looks about 18
23:59in a couple
24:01and then some when she's a bit older.
24:03Early 30s maybe
24:05and
24:07she's wearing that ring
24:09in all of them.
24:11In all of them.
24:13So,
24:15what are you thinking, sir?
24:17I'm thinking
24:19where's the ring now?
24:21Because it wasn't on her hand when she was
24:23pulled out of the sea.
24:25So, where is it?
24:27You think Roy Palmer
24:29might have it?
24:33He's back again.
24:41Afternoon.
24:43Officer Curtis
24:45said I find you here.
24:47How can we help you?
24:49The Donna Bray case.
24:51You read it in the file.
24:53She's your mother, right?
24:55Yeah, that's right.
24:57Firstly, my condolences.
24:59Truly, I am sorry for your loss.
25:01But, secondly,
25:03and I'm sorry to do this to you,
25:05I've spoken with the Chief Commissioner
25:07and we need to close it down.
25:09Sorry, what?
25:11The case. We need to close it down.
25:13Why?
25:15Well, as far as the Chief Commissioner and I can see,
25:17it's costing us time
25:19and resources.
25:21And there's not a single piece of physical evidence
25:23to suggest this is anything other than an accident.
25:25Well, no, not yet there isn't.
25:27But we're still waiting for results to come back.
25:29No, you're not.
25:31I dropped by at the lab.
25:33The phone call your mother made?
25:35I need your help, now.
25:37The phone company checked
25:39GPS tracking and it was indeed
25:41made two miles out at sea
25:43just before she drowned.
25:45I get this case matters
25:47to you, D.I. Wilson.
25:49But I think your personal connection with it
25:51is clouding your judgement.
25:53To be honest, we're surprised
25:55Commissioner Patterson ever gave you the go-ahead on it.
25:57You can't do this.
25:59Well, you see...
26:01I sort of can.
26:04But you don't understand what we're doing here.
26:06Look!
26:08The Chief Commissioner has spoken
26:10and there's no coming back on that.
26:12So if you've got a problem with it,
26:14you've got a week left on your contract here.
26:16We can call it a day right now,
26:18get you back on that plane to London real quick.
26:20Hmm?
26:27Enjoy your evenings.
26:33Inspector.
26:35I can't believe he's done this.
26:37I knew no good would come of them replacing Selwyn.
26:40Just two days he's been in charge
26:42and look what's happened.
26:44He's not got a clue what he's doing.
26:46Yeah, I mean, I know I've made some mistakes
26:48and I've still got a lot to learn.
26:50But this guy?
26:52Real idiot.
26:54And what about Mervyn?
26:56How is he?
26:58He's not said much.
27:00Went off on his own, which
27:02is not unusual, but
27:04I think he's feeling pretty crushed.
27:13The phone call your mother made?
27:15They confirmed it wasn't a fake.
27:22This is Donna Bray.
27:24I want to see him!
27:26I need help!
27:28No! Please!
27:31I don't...
27:33I don't have no genius!
27:35There's no land in sight!
27:37I don't know where I am!
27:40Hello?
27:42Hello?
27:49No!
27:51No!
27:55Please!
27:57Please!
27:59Help me!
28:16I don't know how you think I can help.
28:19You must be able to do something.
28:21What, what?
28:23I no longer have any sweet.
28:25You're still the Commissioner of Police, though.
28:28For a few more days.
28:29Yes, but if Sterling Fox has the Chief Commissioner's ear,
28:33then I'm as good as outranked.
28:35Even if others still need you?
28:37People have to get used to not relying on me like they did.
28:41Fifty years of service to this island,
28:44and now you can just walk away?
28:47Not care anymore?
28:49Maybe that's what I need to do.
28:51Maybe that's how I get through this.
28:55By not giving a damn.
28:59Is that really how you want this all to end?
29:03By turning your back on everything you used to stand for?
29:13I think you should go now.
29:17There's nothing further for us to discuss.
29:28Selwyn.
29:30Mervyn came to St. Mary looking for answers.
29:34If he has to leave without finding them,
29:37then this island has let him down.
29:58I love you.
30:18Yes, sir?
30:19Do you want to tell us what's going on?
30:21I'm here to get the case reopened.
30:25How?
30:30Let's just say I have a plan.
30:34Selwyn.
30:37Good morning.
30:39What a beautiful day, right?
30:41You got your uniform on.
30:44Having a leaving party or something?
30:46We're here, Mr. Fox, because I'm going to arrest you.
30:51You're going to what?
30:52For the damage you've caused my car.
30:55Didn't he just say he was going to arrest him?
30:57This is a joke, right?
30:58No, I think he did.
30:59You're joking.
31:00Sterling Fox.
31:02I'm arresting you for criminal damage.
31:05You do not have to say anything.
31:08I'm not joking.
31:10Is this actually happening or am I dreaming right now?
31:14You know, honey,
31:17it's really happening.
31:19Officer Rose, handcuffs, please.
31:23Take Mr. Fox to the cells.
31:26Best day of my life.
31:29Selwyn, you're making a big mistake right now.
31:33The chief commissioner is not going to be happy.
31:36Stop.
31:37No.
31:39You can't do this.
31:41I can.
31:43And I have.
31:46And I have.
31:49And if you do not let Officer Rose put the cuffs on you,
31:53I'll also charge you with resisting arrest.
32:00This is crazy.
32:02You're crazy.
32:09I can probably string this out for the rest of the day.
32:13So you have until then to solve the Dornabray case.
32:17So that was your plan?
32:19Arrest the new boss, then put him behind bars?
32:21You haven't met him, what?
32:24No, sir, I don't.
32:34This island.
32:37Let me out of here! Please!
32:40Can we not just talk about this?
32:42You're in good time, Mr. Fox.
32:44But you'll have to wait while I gather evidence from the crime scene,
32:48which may take some time.
32:50The crime scene's parked right outside.
32:53How long can it take?
32:55It's been a while since I've been so hands-on.
32:59I have a feeling I may be a bit rusty.
33:03You're killing me in here!
33:06Now, first things first.
33:11A nice cup of coffee.
33:18And maybe...
33:20a biscuit too.
33:30Inspector, if you tell me what it is you're looking for,
33:34perhaps we could speed things up a bit?
33:36No, we're good as we are, thanks.
33:40Is that your boat?
33:41Yeah.
33:43You know, I hadn't realised at first.
33:46Same surnames.
33:48Inspector Wilson, Charlie Wilson.
33:51And then I mentioned to a couple of my customers
33:54that you were asking after Dorna and they filled me in.
33:57Your point?
33:58Oh, no point. I'm just saying.
34:01I didn't know Dorna was your mother.
34:04Five years sober.
34:06Hmm.
34:08That's another reason for my moving here.
34:11Things have got a little bit out of control.
34:13I needed to sort myself out.
34:19You know, I can't imagine how hard it must have been,
34:22having never known your mother,
34:24to come all this way and find out she'd...
34:29passed on.
34:32She never mentioned you, you know, in the time I got to know her.
34:37Didn't even tell me that she and Charlie had a baby.
34:41Maybe she chose to put all that behind her.
34:46Out of sight, out of mind.
34:49Why are you telling me this?
34:51No reason.
34:53I just thought you might want to know.
34:56Sir, I'm not going to lie to you.
35:00Sir!
35:02I've got something.
35:08This is interesting, Mr Palmer.
35:10An email exchange with a jewellers in the US
35:13requesting a valuation on a ring that was previously in Dornaberry's possession.
35:18Two million dollars. Care to explain?
35:20Very happy to. Dorna and I were reminiscing.
35:23She was talking about Charlie and she showed me the ring he gave her.
35:27A promise ring, just before he went back to England.
35:30Go on.
35:31Well, it took me a moment, but I was looking at it and I thought,
35:34how on earth does a teenage Charlie Wilson afford a piece of jewellery like that?
35:41Then it came back to me.
35:43There had been a theft reported at the hotel we were staying at.
35:47A rather valuable ring.
35:49I realised.
35:51That was it.
35:53So why did you request a valuation?
35:55Because Dorna wouldn't believe me when I told her it was valuable.
35:58So you discussed it with her? The fact that this was stolen?
36:02Yeah, and I told her she should hand it over to the police
36:05so that it could be returned to the woman who owned it.
36:08What did she say?
36:10She refused.
36:12She said it was hers and she was going to keep it.
36:15I don't believe you.
36:17Well, you wouldn't, would you?
36:20Dorna was your mother. Of course you want to think the best of her.
36:24But, and I say this with the utmost sympathy, Inspector,
36:29you didn't know her.
36:32You never even met her.
36:41And where's the ring now?
36:43Because it's not at Dorna's house and it wasn't found on her body.
36:46Ah! So!
36:49This is the reason you've been turning my villa upside down.
36:53Do you think I have it?
36:55If you'd told me what it was you were looking for,
36:57we could have saved a whole load of time.
37:00Because it's not here.
37:02And I don't know where it is.
37:05Honestly, I don't.
37:11Well, that's about all.
37:13We'd say hello to each other, but no more.
37:16How are you getting on?
37:18I'm afraid, Miss Clementson, contact was much.
37:21She recognises Roy from the photo, but never had much to do with him.
37:25He was friends with Dorna's father, but that's all that I knew.
37:29Never really talked to him, if I'm honest with you, Inspector.
37:33You and me both.
37:35All right, well, it was worth the ask.
37:37Thank you, Miss Clementson.
37:43Seb's finished searching Roy Palmer's bar and the ring isn't there either.
37:47So if he's got it, he's hidden it.
37:49Come on!
37:52Sorry, sorry, it's not you, it's just...
37:55We're so close to solving this.
37:57We know who did it. We think we know why.
38:00I just can't figure out how Roy Palmer made Dorna
38:03travel out to sea when she knew there was a storm coming.
38:10I don't know.
38:13I feel like I'm blocked.
38:15I feel like I'm blocked.
38:17I can't join the dots.
38:19Something's holding me back.
38:21Like what, Inspector?
38:24I think...
38:27I think there's something I should have done, but I haven't.
38:32Just bear with me, yeah?
38:46Inspector?
38:49Everything all right?
38:50I don't know.
38:52Not really.
38:58There's these letters
39:01my mum sent to my dad years ago now.
39:06I think there's answers in here about stuff.
39:12I just can't bring myself to...
39:14Maybe...
39:16I could for you.
39:24Come.
39:30So...
39:32how would you like to do this?
39:35Um...
39:38Just give me the headlines
39:40to start with.
39:43The letters were written just after you were born.
39:47They were sent from St Marie.
39:50And your mother talks about being back here
39:53after some time in London
39:55with Charlie and his parents
39:59when you were born.
40:03Right.
40:06She seemed to have cared for your father a lot.
40:10But his parents weren't happy with the situation
40:14that he got a girl pregnant when they were both still so young.
40:20It was them
40:23who insisted that she and Charlie
40:26give the baby up.
40:31It wasn't her decision?
40:33I don't believe so.
40:37Here.
40:38She says...
40:41I know they are just looking out for you
40:45and think they are doing the right thing.
40:49But it hurts.
40:51And it's not what I wanted.
40:55I'm never going to be the same person
40:58I was after this.
41:04Um...
41:06It's broken me.
41:10Also, I think you should hear this.
41:15She mentions the ring you told me about.
41:19But she says...
41:21I have not taken it off
41:24since I got back here.
41:27And I'm never going to.
41:30I'm always going to wear it.
41:33And whenever I look at it,
41:36I'm always going to think of our little boy.
41:49I don't think she ever forgot you.
41:53I, um...
41:55I need a minute.
42:03Okay.
42:23I'm never going to be the same person
42:26I was after this.
42:28She said she wasn't the same person.
42:33She couldn't be. She wouldn't be.
42:38And if she wasn't,
42:43every part of this changes.
42:45We know Dorna applied for a permit
42:47to scatter her dad's ashes on a beach.
42:50Come on, Mervyn.
42:51They were waiting at the bar for Roy to open up
42:53when they saw Dorna heading out to sea.
42:55Where's the connection?
42:57Where's the ring now?
42:58It's not here.
42:59And I don't know where it is.
43:01Where?
43:02If he's got it, he's hidden it.
43:05The harbour.
43:07No, no, no, that's too obvious.
43:09Too many people would know.
43:11Um, somewhere else.
43:13Five years sober.
43:14That's another reason for my moving here.
43:17Things have got a little bit out of control.
43:19That's where.
43:23Sir, you wouldn't happen to know
43:25where the local AA meetings take place?
43:28As it happens, I do.
43:30My local church hosts them.
43:33Of course.
43:35We're going to need to get Roy Palmer to the station.
43:39You sold it?
43:42Yeah.
43:44Yes, I have.
43:46And with the help of your mother,
43:49by the sounds of it.
43:52Huh.
43:59Look, I've had enough of this.
44:02I'm calling the Chief Commissioner.
44:04No, Sterling.
44:05It's Mr Fox, actually, now, if you please.
44:07You're going to sit down there
44:09and watch what's about to happen.
44:12No ifs, no buts.
44:22They're just in here, Mr Palmer.
44:28Quite the crowd that's gathered.
44:30This is Commissioner Patterson.
44:32Hmm.
44:34Must be important if you're bringing the big guns out.
44:37Oh, it is, Mr Palmer.
44:39Trust me.
44:41It is very important.
44:43Because I'm about to arrest you for the murder of Dawna Bray.
44:48Right.
44:50Well,
44:52I'm curious to know how you reached that conclusion.
44:56Take a seat.
44:58We'll get started.
45:08Now, working out the motive in this case,
45:13why you committed the murder,
45:16why you committed murder,
45:19wasn't that difficult.
45:21You needed the money.
45:23You're in debt, and it was growing by the minute.
45:26But then Dawna Bray came back into your life
45:31after 50 years,
45:34with a $2 million ring on her finger,
45:37just waiting for you to get your hands on it.
45:40But that was a problem,
45:42because Dawna hadn't taken that ring off her finger
45:45since it was given to her all those years ago.
45:48So it's not like you could just stage a burglary and take it.
45:52No.
45:54If you were going to get hold of that ring and sell it,
45:58you decided you were going to have to kill her.
46:08But you knew you had to be clever
46:12if you were going to get away with it.
46:14You decided, if you were going to commit murder,
46:17you wanted it to look like an accident.
46:20And with Dawna mentioning to you
46:22that she needed to scatter her father's ashes,
46:25that's when your plan started to take shape,
46:27to make it look like she died at sea in a storm.
46:32So how to pull it off?
46:34How do you make it look like this woman travelled out to sea alone,
46:38only to drown when bad weather hit?
46:40Well, I'll admit, that is a question
46:43that had me well and truly baffled all these weeks.
46:47But today, finally, I realised...
46:54..you weren't acting alone when you murdered Dawna Bray, were you?
47:00You had someone helping you.
47:05So, who was it?
47:07Who was it?
47:13Officer Curtis.
47:15Sir, I found the ring.
47:18She had it.
47:20You see, what I've learnt about you, Roy,
47:23is that your life is lived mostly around that harbour.
47:28Your bar, your friends you go fishing with.
47:31So if you were going to get away with that murder,
47:36your accomplice needed to be someone who wasn't part of that world.
47:40Someone who wouldn't be recognised down there.
47:43And the only thing in your life I've come across
47:45that isn't connected to that harbour...
47:50..your weekly AA meetings.
47:53Which happened to take place at the same church
47:57Brianna Clementson attends and helps out at.
48:00You probably don't remember me,
48:02but we've crossed paths at church a couple of times.
48:04Yes, of course.
48:05And having spoken to the pastor there,
48:07he told us he'd seen you and Brianna together,
48:10that you two got close over the last year.
48:13He said Brianna always seemed lonely, sad,
48:17struggling to find some meaning in life.
48:21I thought it would bring me some happiness with the money we'd get.
48:27He said it would help me find a life for myself.
48:31And you realised you could take advantage of that?
48:35I got nothing. No friends, family.
48:40All I wanted was a life.
48:44Money can't give you that.
48:47I'm not sure it can, honey.
48:50Miss Clementson, I'm going to have to arrest you now
48:54and then take you to the station.
48:57So we have the who.
48:59We have the why.
49:01All that's left is the how.
49:03On the morning of Donna Bray's death,
49:06you went to visit her,
49:08knowing that that particular morning
49:10there was going to be a massive storm.
49:12Ralph?
49:13Hey, Donna.
49:14And two things occurred when you got there.
49:17Firstly, you convinced her to scatter her father's ashes that same day.
49:23It just felt right, you know?
49:26And secondly, we think you slipped Donna a sedative.
49:30FYI, the labs still have a sample of Donna's hair
49:34from the original post-mortem.
49:36It's being tested as we speak.
49:38And any trace of sedative in her system will show up.
49:41So I'm going to pre-emptively call that Exhibit A.
49:45Now, we know Donna checked the weather that morning
49:49and we know she was intending to scatter the ashes on the beach,
49:54which is why she set out,
49:56knowing if she went earlier in the morning,
49:58she'd miss the bad weather.
50:00But what she didn't know was that you were following her, Mr Palmer,
50:04and that soon she'd need to pull over feeling drowsy.
50:07We think you then drove a now unconscious Donna
50:11back to her house where behind the closed gate on the drive,
50:14Brianna Clementson changed into Donna's clothes.
50:19You recovered your own car,
50:20drove back to Donna's house so you could place her body into it.
50:23You then drove to a quiet section of the beach
50:25where your boat was already moored.
50:27You took her out to sea where the storm was heading
50:30and left her there before returning to shore in a dinghy.
50:37Once you got back to shore,
50:40Miss Clementson drove to the harbour in Donna's car,
50:44where she proceeded to take the ashes
50:46and get into Irvingbury's fishing boat.
50:49The harbour was pretty much empty that day
50:51because of the incoming storm,
50:53but you knew your two regular customers would be there
50:57waiting for you to open up
50:59and would see a woman carrying an urn,
51:01getting into a boat and heading out to sea.
51:04Now, Miss Clementson is roughly the same height and build as Donna,
51:09but whether or not the two witnesses recognised her as Donna
51:13doesn't really matter,
51:14cos when they recovered her dead body and brought it to shore
51:17wearing the same clothes, they just assumed it was the same person.
51:21Having headed out to sea where you left your boat, Mr Palmer,
51:25Brianna then removed the clothes she was wearing
51:28and put them back on Dorna.
51:30Once she'd done this,
51:32she moved Dorna's body into Irving's fishing boat
51:36and then returned to shore in your boat,
51:38leaving Dorna Bray unconscious in her father's fishing boat
51:43with a storm about to hit.
51:46You both knew it was a Category 4 storm.
51:50That Dorna, now unconscious in that little boat,
51:52had no chance of surviving.
51:56But something went wrong with your plan.
51:58The sedative wore off and Dorna regained consciousness.
52:09She had her mobile phone in her handbag
52:12and she called the harbourmaster.
52:15Fortunately for you, the signal was poor
52:18and the line cut out before anything incriminating was said.
52:22Now, I don't know exactly what happened out there that day.
52:28Only that Dorna Bray,
52:33my mother,
52:39didn't come back alive.
52:44I'm sorry.
53:04I had to tell them.
53:14Ah.
53:16Sir.
53:25Exhibit B.
53:28I assume the reason you haven't sold this yet
53:30is because you're waiting for the right price.
53:33It wasn't going to be easy to find a buyer for a piece as rare as this.
53:41Stan.
53:44Stan.
53:51Look.
53:54For what it's worth,
53:57I am sorry.
54:00It was never personal.
54:03Maybe not.
54:05But this is.
54:11Roy Palmer.
54:12I'm arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Dorna Bray.
54:17You do not have to say anything.
54:19But it may harm your defence if you do not mention when questioned
54:22something you later rely on in court.
54:26Anything you do say may be given in evidence.
54:43Look.
54:44I'm glad you caught the guy that killed your mother.
54:46But that does not excuse what went on today.
54:50So when I get back to Jamaica,
54:52I'm going to make the Chief Commissioner fully aware.
54:55Well, with respect, Mr Fox,
54:58I'd like to point out that if we did things your way,
55:01a man guilty of murder would be walking free right now.
55:04Which I'm sure the Chief Commissioner would be happy to do.
55:07I'm sorry.
55:08If we did things your way,
55:10a man guilty of murder would be walking free right now.
55:13Which I'm sure the Chief Commissioner would be very interested to hear.
55:16We don't have to be like that about it.
55:18You know what would fix this, Sterling?
55:21When you go back to Jamaica,
55:23you tell your boss that to avoid any more mistakes like this
55:26being made by your good self,
55:28he needs to reinstate the Commissioner.
55:32I'll think about it.
55:35I will let you know.
55:39CAR STARTS
55:47You didn't need to do that.
55:50Yes, sir, I did.
55:52I wish I could have done more.
55:54Because if it wasn't for you,
55:56today wouldn't have happened.
55:59This has been owed to you for a very long time.
56:09MUSIC PLAYS
56:12MUSIC CONTINUES
56:35As I'm writing this letter,
56:38I am wearing the ring you bought me.
56:41In fact, I've not taken it off since I've got back here.
56:46And I'm never going to.
56:48I'm always going to wear it.
56:51And whenever I look at it,
56:54I'm going to think of our little boy,
56:56wherever he is,
56:58whatever he's doing.
57:00I'm going to think of our son
57:03and remember the love I feel for him right now.
57:11MUSIC CONTINUES
57:18ALARM CLOCK BEEPS
57:25MUSIC CONTINUES

58:03Rosa Martinez, a volunteer at the Marlborough Church of Conservancy.
58:07How did her body end up at the shack?
58:09You were the last person in here before the body was found.
58:12Of course. I'm a suspect. They've offered me my job back.
58:15I'm so happy for you.
58:17If a species disappears from a habitat,
58:19the natural order of things can be disrupted.
58:21I'm asking you to reconsider your decision to go back.
58:25You are not at the end of your journey, but at the beginning.
