00:00Here in Tiny House Nation, we've seen it all when it comes to living small.
00:06Everything in here is going to make me cry. It's so perfect.
00:09This is for us.
00:12For many of our Tiny House Nation friends, where they'll cook...
00:16Are you going to be able to cook for 15 people in a small kitchen like this?
00:19...and where they'll eat...
00:22I didn't expect the whole buffet table. I don't know how I'm going to work after this.
00:26...was a really big deal.
00:28I really hope that they can deliver on what we've asked, because if not, I'm not sure the Tiny House is long-term going to work for me.
00:35Now, we're looking back at the stories that explored all the ins and outs of dining tiny.
00:43Is it good?
00:45It's delicious!
00:46This is Tiny House Nation Memory Lane, The Food Factor.
00:51Kicking off the countdown at number 10, a couple of newlyweds with a serious will to grill.
00:58Down in Little Rock, Arkansas, Jenna and James were fixing to get married.
01:03In fact, the team arrived just as Jenna was having her wedding shower, where the build got real, real fast.
01:11So, you guys are really moving into a tiny house?
01:14Yes, hopefully before the wedding.
01:16How many days until the big day, until the wedding?
01:20Eight days.
01:22It sounded like you said eight days.
01:25Like, in one week and one day?
01:27Uh-huh. We would really like to spend the first night in the tiny house.
01:33Did it get hotter in here all of a sudden? I feel like it's...
01:38The heat was definitely on, especially when it came to this couple's cooking needs.
01:43John and the couple got together with Zach to go over the whole menu.
01:47They want a good-sized kitchen.
01:49We want to make sure we can cook together and not just be like this.
01:53Sure. A huge sink.
01:55Yeah. I'm a fan of big sinks.
01:57And James would like to have a place where he can grill.
01:59You know, maybe something built in on the outside.
02:02We're going to have to find a spot that's going to work for that.
02:04It's something that I would really like to see.
02:06Zach went on the hunt for places to put the grill space, which was a tough recipe to figure out.
02:12Luckily, he managed to locate some wasted space.
02:16The grill goes here. You'll be able to prepare food over here.
02:18And then I want to have a cabinet inside where they can have a place for spatulas.
02:22Yeah, some of your barbecue gear.
02:23I like that we're connecting tiny living to the outdoors.
02:28But before long, it was time to see if Jenna and James would dig the whole plan for their new tiny digs.
02:36Oh, my gosh.
02:40Oh, wow.
02:41Whoa.
02:42This space is amazing.
02:44Look at how bright this kitchen is.
02:48This is so cool.
02:49There's just so much storage.
02:51Great.
02:52Oh, my gosh.
02:53What is it?
02:54Come touch this sink.
02:55Oh, my goodness.
02:56Look at this faucet.
02:57Look at this.
02:58That's gorgeous.
02:59That is cool.
03:00You like it?
03:01James, this is ridiculous.
03:03John and Zach came in to take them through some of the kitchen specifics.
03:08What you have here is really a full-size kitchen.
03:11One of the really cool aspects is what I affectionately call the Cadillac of sinks.
03:15When we put in a sink this size, we have to make sure it has extra utility.
03:19And that's exactly what a cutting board is like.
03:22I mean, now you've gained counter space that you can prepare on.
03:25And if you look at the bottom of it, you can see a dish rack.
03:28It actually gains us some real estate on the countertop.
03:31Some of our wedding gifts are here.
03:33These are like our knives.
03:35These are your wedding glasses.
03:37But there was still one more course to dive into.
03:40A surprise that's waiting for you behind door number one.
03:44Oh, how cool.
03:45This is your very own slide-out outdoor grill station.
03:48Right?
03:49How fun is that?
03:50Oh, that is so cool.
03:51What I've done is built kind of an extension.
03:54And then the grill drops over the front.
03:57This is gorgeous.
03:58You have all this area for food prep.
04:00This can also be a little table if you want to sit out here.
04:03And then we've got all the storage in here for spices, the barbecue stuff.
04:07Yes.
04:08Another thing is that all the materials are reclaimed.
04:10This whole cabinet area, this is all just scraps that we had from building the rest of the house.
04:15So very cool.
04:18Three weeks later, the couple were cooking up a storm
04:21and finding that tiny living was definitely to their taste.
04:26Jenna and James and your new tiny house.
04:28Cheers.
04:29Good to see you.
04:31Coming in at number nine on our tiny house countdown,
04:34a couple whose new tiny pad had to accommodate some specific dietary demands.
04:40In La Crosse, Wisconsin, John and Zach met up with the eclectic vegan duo of Ashley and Cody
04:46to help them go small.
04:48And managing their vegan lifestyle was already a challenge in their old kitchen.
04:53The problem is is that there's no counter space.
04:56This is your herb garden?
04:57Yeah.
04:58I'm vegan.
04:59I do all the cooking.
05:00So pretty much Cody is vegan too.
05:02We use the fresh herbs in all of our cooking.
05:05But we'll be moving our house around so we can't have a garden outside.
05:09So some sort of garden space.
05:11Okay.
05:12But it's inside.
05:13It was up to Zach to hit the drawing board and come up with a plan.
05:17I'm calling it the industrial salad station.
05:20It's going to be three planter boxes that are going to be stacked vertically on the kitchen wall.
05:24Each planter box will have a fluorescent light placed in the bottom of the box
05:28so it will shine down on the plants below, helping them to grow.
05:31For a water source, I'm going to do a drip irrigation system that links all three of the boxes.
05:36There will be a basin filled with water that's below the planter boxes
05:39that has a pump that feeds water up to the top box.
05:42The top box drains into the one below that and so on all the way to the water tank,
05:46and the drip system keeps all the plants nice and hydrated.
05:49Finally, it was time to show Cody and Ashley their new digs.
05:54Woo!
06:02Wow!
06:03Is this our place?
06:04Huge kitchen.
06:05Got this counter space over here, here, here.
06:09I'm ready to cook.
06:10And most of all, how would the salad course go over?
06:14This is what I've been referring to as the industrial salad station.
06:18Having a salad garden that's actually going to produce
06:21isn't really realistic unless you kind of give it some help,
06:24and by help I mean lights and irrigation.
06:27So what we needed was we needed a drip system so that you don't have to constantly maintain it.
06:31So you'll see the water will drain into one pipe,
06:34and it will drain all the way down back into the tub.
06:37I love the sound of it.
06:38That's a beautiful functional piece of art and functional piece of greenery
06:43and functional piece of eatery, so it's awesome.
06:47We're counting down the Tiny House Nation builds
06:50that all turned up the heat when it came to cooking and eating.
06:54In at number 8, two nature-loving teachers
06:58who needed to do major food prep for their adventures in the great outdoors.
07:03This build took John and Zach to Sacramento
07:06where they connected with Justin and Melissa,
07:08an outdoorsy couple that combined their love of nature and education
07:13to form a nonprofit.
07:15Fire Out is a outdoor-based education company
07:18that takes kids outside to explore,
07:21and we teach them all sorts of different survival skills.
07:23Check out the river, you guys!
07:25Our dream for our new tiny home is that we're going to be able to run programs
07:28and trips from it and expose our youth to this idea
07:32that maybe we don't need to live in such gigantic homes
07:35and we don't necessarily need all of the stuff that we have.
07:38Justin and Melissa's nonprofit work had a direct impact on their kitchen.
07:42Our kitchen we use for ourselves, but also for our business
07:47because we prep all the food before we head out on a backpacking trip,
07:50so we really like the idea of the big galley kitchen
07:52where we could both work in the kitchen together.
07:54And Zach had an innovative idea for maximizing their food prep space.
07:58When I'm thinking about a food prep zone,
08:01we don't have a whole lot of area we can spread out,
08:03so my idea is really food prep zone kind of comes out and goes all around you.
08:08Okay.
08:09So it's like prep station over here, prep station here, over here,
08:12something comes down and you're just kind of, you know, cutting all over the place.
08:16And when it was all said and done, it was a whole new world.
08:24Oh my gosh!
08:31And the best part, it had that special space to support their business dream.
08:36A huge fridge, full-size sink, and really all of the countertop space.
08:42Is this a kitchen that can work for you guys?
08:44Absolutely.
08:45We're not quite done yet because there is one more amazing piece
08:48that Zach was able to come up with.
08:50So the idea is pull out this pin.
08:53Uh-huh.
08:54Now you pull.
08:55Yes!
08:57And there goes another one.
09:00Oh my gosh!
09:02This is sweet.
09:03Press the pin in.
09:04You can stand side by side.
09:06Yes!
09:07And then you can cut like Zach cuts.
09:09And I love what it's made out of.
09:12Great attention to detail.
09:14So you've got your full industrial sandwich operation going on.
09:17Somebody's smearing out your mayonnaise.
09:20But where do the sandwiches go?
09:22So sandwiches go up here like that.
09:27And the whole thing.
09:29What?
09:32Sweet.
09:33Check that out.
09:35You give so much to so many that it makes what Zach and I do
09:38that much more special.
09:40I guess that means that you guys feel pretty good about it.
09:42Unless those are tears of just buttered sadness.
09:45Tears of joy.
09:46Tears of just joy and gratitude.
09:49The tiny house that lands at number seven on our kitchen countdown
09:52is a story about the art of butter making.
09:55The team headed to Pleasanton, California,
09:58to help Brian, Devin, and their dog Olive transition to tiny.
10:03Devin works as a life coach,
10:05while Brian is a professional butter maker,
10:08which is as awesome as it sounds.
10:11How much gear does butter making come with?
10:13The stand mixer is my best friend.
10:15Okay.
10:16I have my butter molds.
10:17Yeah.
10:18Oh!
10:19Roasting pans for all this stuff that we love to do.
10:22Tongs, spoons, knives.
10:24And that's just for butter.
10:25This couple was also looking to move past a recent kitchen nightmare.
10:29Newlywed life, I feel like, hasn't exactly started
10:32because two weeks after we got back from the wedding,
10:36our apartment caught fire.
10:37I lost a lot of my butter stuff.
10:39And we lost all our plants, too.
10:41They were looking forward to a perfect tiny house
10:44they could call their own.
10:45But it turned out Brian's butter operation
10:48was a little more complicated than it might seem.
10:51You know, one thing, this goes back to what Devin was saying
10:53about having plants up in the loft.
10:55I'll have a lot of the herbs that I use for the butter.
10:57Basically, a whole herb garden will be up there.
11:00To climb up and down the ladder, holding the plants
11:03and watering them, bringing them back up,
11:05that might just be a little challenging.
11:07So having some way of getting them from here to there easily.
11:12Zach came up with a plan that worked on a couple of different levels.
11:16So the solution that I've thought of that I really like
11:19is to have an elevator in the loft for getting the plants and herbs
11:24down into the kitchen without having to carry them
11:26up and down the ladder.
11:27So you can use it from the kitchen
11:29and then also use it when you're in the loft.
11:32And it was time for Brian and Devin's big moment.
11:36Come on, puppy.
11:39Oh, my goodness.
11:45Oh, my God.
11:47Wow.
11:48And when it was all said and done,
11:50curiosity got the butter of John, and he had to know.
11:54Does it seem like the type of kitchen that you can actually do some work in?
11:57I think we can do it all in this kitchen, honestly.
11:59The one thing that you asked for was a good way for you
12:03in the butter-making process to get things like your plants
12:07to the loft and down into the kitchen
12:09without having to carry them down the ladder.
12:11Right, yes.
12:12So I think we did a pretty fun way to do that.
12:15Yeah, you've got to show me how this works.
12:19I can just see us doing that every day just for fun.
12:23Send me up something. Okay.
12:26The plant elevator that Zach made is just incredible.
12:29It's just so cool that we have, like, a little elevator
12:31to go from downstairs to upstairs.
12:34We've got a full menu of kitchen magic here
12:37on our Tiny House Nation Top 10.
12:40At number 6, a tiny house that had to be totally brunchable.
12:45In Gainesville, Florida, successful hair salon owners
12:48Danny and Lonnie have been downsizing
12:51from a 3,000-square-foot home to a rental one-third the size
12:56and now to an even smaller tiny house.
12:59To go along with going small, Lonnie had one major stipulation.
13:04Victorian exterior, modern, clean interior.
13:08And a space for brunch.
13:10Yeah.
13:11That's where we entertain.
13:13Hang out on a Sunday, everybody eat a little quiche
13:15and have some mimosas.
13:17I'm not sure that we can find a space for brunch,
13:20but we could probably find a space for, you know, brunch.
13:24A little.
13:26The first order of business was selling Danny and Lonnie
13:29on backyard brunches.
13:31It's not a really large space. Yeah.
13:33But if you come outside, you can see
13:35it's going to give you exactly what you need.
13:38Kind of small.
13:41If this outdoor tiny space doesn't work,
13:43then I don't believe that this tiny house will work.
13:45I'd like to know exactly what it needs.
13:47Well, when we have our friends over,
13:49sometimes we have mimosas and brunch.
13:51Okay.
13:52So an area where we can do that.
13:54I mean, just like a mimosa station.
13:56Right, yeah, maybe.
13:57Mimosa station, wine bar.
13:59Okay.
14:00And with those marching orders,
14:02it was time for Zach to get cracking on the mimosa station.
14:06It's going to have doors that open
14:08and then all of your glasses and everything
14:10will be inside the doors.
14:12This is where all the wine bottles are going.
14:14Maybe like an ice cooler.
14:16Okay.
14:17And then actually a prep station that's going to come out.
14:20What do you think?
14:21Honestly, it's more substantial than I thought,
14:23but I think that's good.
14:24And just how good was it?
14:26That was up to Danny and Lonnie to decide.
14:30Oh, my God.
14:31Whoa.
14:32Whoa.
14:33Oh, my gosh.
14:34I can't believe how big it is.
14:35It's incredible.
14:36Danny and Lonnie loved their new tiny digs inside.
14:39Then it came down to that big brunch question.
14:42Come on out.
14:44Whoa.
14:45Look at this, Lonnie.
14:47We also knew that we needed a place to have your mimosa station.
14:51You open it up and hopefully you just have everything you need.
14:54That's awesome.
14:55This pulls out.
14:56Whoa.
14:57So you actually have a place that you can work.
14:59When you need it to tuck away, it just slides right back
15:02and then there's still room.
15:03All the glasses.
15:04For all the glasses to close into the space.
15:07You've known it again.
15:08It's definitely Victorian,
15:09and it has this really amazing, whimsical feature.
15:12It's so cool.
15:13It definitely fits us and our brunches.
15:14This is amazing, too.
15:15Yeah.
15:16And I know we promised you a table, but I don't see it.
15:19I figure maybe I could just grab the one that I built into the bench here,
15:24and that might be the easiest way to get one.
15:27Whoa.
15:28Oh, my God.
15:29That is crazy.
15:30Then that saves me a trip, you know?
15:32Yeah, that's actually probably better.
15:34You know, you're going to have a party.
15:35Like, did that just happen?
15:37When Zach started pulling the bench apart, I was like, what is going on?
15:39It was just mind-blowing.
15:40Crazy.
15:41Voila.
15:42Tell me this doesn't scream brunch much.
15:44If this isn't a mimosa party, then I don't know what is.
15:47It totally is.
15:48That's so cool.
15:49That just blew my mind.
15:50Next up on the Tiny House Countdown, at number five,
15:54an eclectic single mom with a taste for raw foods.
15:58John and Zach trek to Southern California to meet Phyllis,
16:01who is looking to build a super sustainable tiny house for her and her two boys.
16:06Phyllis' off-the-grid, energy-efficient build was unusual in lots of ways for John and Zach,
16:12and that definitely included the kitchen.
16:15My big concern is for my cooking, especially my raw food cooking.
16:19You know, I use my dehydrator.
16:22Okay, hold on.
16:23Raw food cooking, that seems like an oxymoron to me.
16:28You are allowed to dehydrate foods, but only up to 118 degrees maximum.
16:33So this is the dehydrator?
16:35Yes.
16:36Are there any other giant power-sucking machines that I need to know about as far as within the kitchen?
16:42Well, there's just these three here.
16:45Just my professional juicer, professional blender here, then food processor.
16:50And also, the boys do eat some cooked foods, so I also will need an oven and a stovetop for them.
16:57I mean, this is a bigger deal than I thought.
16:59It was up to John and Zach to come up with the perfect tiny cooking recipe,
17:04and one of the biggest ingredients was sunlight.
17:07Oh, we got her.
17:09I already opened it up, this thing.
17:11Look at that.
17:12Sweet.
17:13The Sun Oven is something that is not new technology, but they've gotten it so much better than it used to be.
17:19This system, you can actually cook, you can bake, definitely dehydrate some food.
17:23Obviously, this goes super well with what Felice wants, too.
17:26It's an off-the-grid house.
17:27I mean, you can't get any more off-the-grid than a Sun Oven.
17:30And then it was time for this off-the-grid, super sustainable creation to be unveiled.
17:37Look at that.
17:40Oh, my goodness.
17:41The main room is so spacious.
17:44But how would the house's tiny cooking setup go over?
17:48Let's talk about your kitchen.
17:49Look at this huge fridge.
17:52Plenty of solar power up top to keep it going.
17:55And you're able to get some of the appliances in here.
17:58That's the essential of what I need.
17:59We got your blender and your food processor.
18:01Perfect.
18:02Look at this hanging garden with edible lettuce in here, which goes back to some of it.
18:07I'll try some of it.
18:08Yeah, get in there.
18:09I think we all have a little.
18:10The inside passed the test, but what about the outside?
18:13You know what this bad boy is?
18:15Sun Oven.
18:16You can cook anything you want.
18:17We can also get it to 118 degrees so that you can dehydrate your food.
18:21This is an alcohol burner that we can bring inside and work, or we can cook out here with it.
18:26Perfect.
18:27I love having just an outdoor cook space.
18:30It all added up to another kitchen success.
18:33Not only making Phyllis' dream come true, but helping out the planet too.
18:40Things are getting hot as we count down Tiny House Nation's most memorable kitchen builds.
18:46At number four, it's a couple that includes a former chef with big needs for their tiny kitchen.
18:53John and Zach are in San Diego to work with Vanessa and Jared, who've been married just over a year.
19:00Jared's a Navy survival instructor, and Vanessa used to be a chef,
19:06but was planning on getting her doctorate in nursing.
19:09But she didn't want to lose touch with her culinary side by going tiny.
19:14I mean, I can tell there's a lot of gear here, and it's nice gear too, isn't it?
19:17It's pretty important that I have most of my tools.
19:21This was Vanessa's grill from when she had her own business.
19:24Okay.
19:25We do a lot of grilling.
19:26Okay.
19:27Vanessa uses a lot of fresh herbs, and we try to grow a lot of our own vegetables.
19:32With the kitchen so important, John and Zach decided to give the couple a preview.
19:37So it's going to be counter space in an L shape.
19:40You do have a big sink, right?
19:42And I think that that actually is important.
19:44Yeah.
19:45But that really dictates the counter space being kind of on the side.
19:48And I know at least in this portion, you're talking about an L.
19:51So you're dealing with a piece of counter space that you can't really get at necessarily as well as you'd want.
19:57And then over here, you've got the electric range.
20:00I know the refrigerator is kind of a mini under cabinet size.
20:04I definitely don't think an under counter refrigerator is going to work.
20:07Okay.
20:08And we basically cook everything from scratch, so lots of fresh produce.
20:12Okay.
20:13Definitely hoping for a gas range.
20:15I think any chef, you know, prefers that.
20:18I'm a little concerned about counter space just for, you know, chopping everything.
20:23Appliances.
20:24Yeah, appliances.
20:26I'm hearing a lot of red flags.
20:28And you're asking for counter space.
20:30And I know that the counter space is more or less taken up by the big sink as well as the range.
20:35And if we're talking about a full size refrigerator, that's going to take up the last of the counter space.
20:40And it turned out that along with needing a space for his gear, Jared had his own culinary ask.
20:46Well, Vanessa does all the cooking, but the one thing I'm responsible for is grilling.
20:50And I kind of saw this as being down the road like where we would do that.
20:54We can make a grilling station.
20:56Okay.
20:57Do you notice how Speedy Gonzalez over here just goes ahead and promises the world a grilling station,
21:02piling on the work without skipping a beat?
21:04You know what?
21:05You love it.
21:06I know you do.
21:08Yep.
21:09The cooking needs on this build made it a real doozy.
21:12So, Zach got working on the outdoor space.
21:15The storage and grilling zone is essentially going to be a watertight cabinet box built onto the side of the house.
21:21I'm going to have a big door cover that's going to lift up, forming a shed roof for the grilling zone.
21:25Inside, there will be room for a propane tank and other grilling supplies.
21:29The grilling station and a separate prep table will be able to fold in and out of the space.
21:34Above that is going to be storage space for all of Jared's gear.
21:37I think Jared and Vanessa are going to love it.
21:39But to make all this work, they needed Vanessa to make a few sacrifices on kitchen equipment.
21:44What does the food processor do?
21:46Does it chop food up?
21:47It also emulsifies.
21:50But what's the blender do?
21:51Well, it's different.
21:53Emulsifies.
21:55But you maybe can't bring all of them.
21:57No, no, no, no.
21:58You definitely can't bring all of them.
22:00And they still had one more culinary mission to deal with, the herb garden.
22:05Okay, it's a woolly pocket, and you put the earth in here, the soil, and then all your plants in there.
22:11And when you do move the house, this garden, it can easily be moved indoors.
22:15I love it.
22:16It was all coming together.
22:18And before long, Jared and Vanessa were presented with the final product.
22:24I love it.
22:25The garden is awesome.
22:27It's serious.
22:28They loved the garden.
22:30But would the pro chef approve of the kitchen?
22:32Oh, my gosh.
22:34Oh, my gosh.
22:35It's amazing.
22:37The kitchen feels big.
22:39And the stove.
22:40Oh, my gosh.
22:41And the refrigerator.
22:42You got your full-size refrigerator.
22:44I love this.
22:46Oh, my gosh.
22:47The kitchen, wow.
22:49I love everything.
22:51I can't wait to cook in here.
22:53And Zach couldn't wait to show off this tricked-out kitchen.
22:56We did need to find some other way to prep.
22:59And so what we did was actually taking what I was already doing in terms of this table stand.
23:06Okay.
23:07Bringing it into the kitchen.
23:09And now with a little lever release, it unlocks.
23:12The whole thing spins over.
23:14Now you got a cutting board.
23:16That's so awesome.
23:18Is that a big enough prep area?
23:20I think this is probably plenty.
23:22We do have one more thing to show you.
23:24This one's outside.
23:26Okay.
23:27You can see it's locked on one side.
23:29You just give it a little release.
23:31Now watch yourself because the whole thing just kind of comes up on its own.
23:36Oh, my gosh.
23:39Now your grill slides open.
23:41You got a full table.
23:43A little torch deal here.
23:45And then the leg just slides down as a pole.
23:48Now you got a second one.
23:50Pulls out.
23:51Same deal.
23:52Oh, my gosh.
23:54It locks in place.
23:56So now what you have is you got really a galley-style kitchen so you can do your grilling
24:01and then chop over here, turn around.
24:04You got a little more prep space.
24:06You got access to any of the utensils that you're going to need.
24:09And you have a huge amount of storage for all of your work and outdoor gear.
24:13We can't wait to come out here and cook.
24:16We are going to have so much fun with this.
24:19At number three on our tiny kitchen countdown, they say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach.
24:26This next couple would definitely agree.
24:29Down in Chattanooga, Tennessee, the guys met up with newlyweds Jeremy and Lindsay
24:35who spent the first year of their marriage traveling the world.
24:40This tiny house, like, lends itself perfectly to the type of lifestyle that we live.
24:43Absolutely.
24:44We want to continue traveling, so it's important to us to have that flexibility.
24:48Even if you're a traveler, you have to have a home base.
24:50But a trip to the kitchen opened up a different storyline.
24:54When it comes to the kitchen, it seemed like the couple had a simple plan.
24:58Lindsay cooks and Jeremy eats a lot.
25:01I don't have to have an oven this big,
25:04but it would be nice if I could at least fit one casserole pan inside
25:09or, you know, be able to have at least two burners going.
25:13Lindsay really loves to cook, and Jeremy really loves that Lindsay likes to cook.
25:19But this kitchen strategy session also opened up a whole different can of worms.
25:24We do a little bit more than just the baking. We do some canning.
25:28And they also do canning, which means big canning pots and stuff that takes up room.
25:34John decided the couple needed to experience what a really cramped kitchen really feels like.
25:40Here it comes right here.
25:42Oh, no.
25:43Right this way.
25:44The challenge is the two of you guys are cooking the crew lunch.
25:49Oh, no.
25:51You ready for it?
25:52Let's do it.
25:53Now, this is actually a little bit bigger than your kitchen is going to be,
25:57but this food truck features full-size appliances just like you want in your tiny house.
26:02See what we have.
26:03A little bit.
26:04Sorry.
26:06I need this.
26:07No, no, no, no. Don't use that on the onions because I need to use that.
26:09It's serrated to cut the bread.
26:11Your mess is getting into my size.
26:14This food truck challenge sure was challenging.
26:18One small move, and one of us could get burnt or stabbed very easily.
26:24I choose burnt.
26:27It's getting warm.
26:29You definitely have to clean up as you go.
26:31There's very minimal counter space, you know, so you can't just get everything out,
26:36and it just starts to pile up very quickly.
26:39Where's the?
26:40Hey, guys.
26:41Hey.
26:42Starting to smell pretty good in here.
26:44How's it going?
26:45Hi.
26:46Lindsay broke the cabinet already.
26:47I already broke the cabinet.
26:48Oh, good.
26:49About time for me to rally the crew?
26:51Sure.
26:52Ladies and gentlemen, it is time for lunch.
26:55Come on over.
26:56Get your grilled cheese.
26:57Send them out.
26:58They're all different, so.
27:00Thanks, guys.
27:01I got a couple more.
27:02You got them?
27:03Okay.
27:04Boom.
27:05Down the hatch.
27:07So do you think you could manage with three quarter size appliances?
27:10Yeah.
27:11That's exactly what I was hoping.
27:12I may not be able to, like, pump out five pies at once.
27:15It might just be, you know, one.
27:17Now it was time to see how all the ingredients finally came together.
27:22Oh, yeah.
27:27This is amazing.
27:28Oh, my word.
27:30Everything in here is going to make me cry.
27:32It's so perfect.
27:34And when it came to the kitchen, things got even better.
27:37Let's go check it out.
27:38Okay.
27:39The marching orders were if the kitchen didn't work,
27:41then the tiny house wasn't going to work.
27:43Nice.
27:44Right?
27:45So we got you the big fridge.
27:46We got you the oven.
27:47Oh, it's perfect.
27:49Does this look like a kitchen that you can bake and cook in comfortably?
27:52Absolutely.
27:53And when it came to Lindsay's favorite kitchen hobby,
27:55Zach's design had her covered.
27:58So if you open up these cupboards, the first thing you'll notice is that
28:03there's all the jar storage.
28:06So we take advantage of the inside of the cabinet.
28:09Every single cabinet door actually has, it's just loaded full of cans.
28:14But that's not quite all.
28:16There is a little platform that slides out.
28:20And now here's your canning supplies.
28:24How perfect is that?
28:26All my canning stuff, it's all there.
28:28Every single door was utilized for canning stuff.
28:31Thanks to Zach and John's ingenuity,
28:33these new tiny house converts definitely have a can-do attitude.
28:39I made it work.
28:41We're cooking with gas on this special foodie-focused episode of Tiny House Nation.
28:47Next at number two, it's the story of a chef and a firefighter
28:51coming off the loss of their home and going tiny to get back on track.
28:57John and Zach were in wine country Sonoma, California,
29:01to help out Xanthe and Scott after California wildfires
29:05destroyed their 1,300-square-foot house up on a mountain.
29:10For Xanthe and Scott, a big part of putting their lives back together
29:14would be cooking for and eating with those close to them.
29:18And, by the way, Xanthe's a chef.
29:22Our house is always the center of our social world,
29:25having people over for dinners and for weekends.
29:29For not a giant tiny house, this is a very big kitchen.
29:32Totally.
29:33Scott and Xanthe love to entertain guests,
29:36and that's the driving force behind their tiny house design.
29:39It's a lounge and a dining area with banquette seating.
29:42Xanthe's a chef, so over half the square footage is devoted to the kitchen.
29:46There is room for full-size appliances and plenty of storage space.
29:50I feel like it was all upper cabinets.
29:52Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how I can remember those.
29:55I was just going to say, how's that going to work?
29:56I'll ask Scott to get it for me, whatever it's really high.
29:58Most of the storage is way up high, and Xanthe is way down low.
30:03She is not very tall.
30:05I wonder how that kind of jives.
30:07Definitely seeing some kind of issues going on there.
30:09Meanwhile, John and Zach got to work on the outdoor space
30:13they'll actually be using once the couple moves into their new tiny house.
30:17In a tiny house, the tongue where you attach it to the truck is important,
30:21but it doesn't always look that good.
30:23We're sitting out here, and there's this beautiful view.
30:25You come around the corner, that's kind of the first thing we're looking at.
30:28We can disguise the tongue of the trailer by turning it into an outdoor cooking station.
30:32A grill will sit on top of a lightweight base that will cover the hitch, allowing storage.
30:37They're actually just taking that space and turning it into something that they need anyway.
30:41The space also had to be fit for an ace chef like Xanthe.
30:45What we really have to address is how she's going to prep all this food.
30:49There's not a whole lot of countertop space.
30:51So what are we thinking?
30:52Like a kitchen island.
30:53A kitchen island would be amazing if it could get out of there.
30:56Somehow you can stow it away and pull it out when you need it.
30:59Maybe this island actually is a cabinet that lives underneath the countertop.
31:04You bring out the cabinet, and then that's the base for a prep station.
31:08Can it be a table also, though?
31:09I think that we can potentially turn it into both.
31:12Can it also be some kind of ladder?
31:14Something that slides out of it, and she can walk up.
31:18Are we going to four for one now?
31:20We're going to create a multi-use portable cabinet for the kitchen.
31:23The drawers will be storage space for Xanthe's cooking needs.
31:26The butcher block surface will fold out once to become a prep station,
31:30or a second time to become a dining table for Xanthe and Scott's dinner parties.
31:34First, it was time for a tiny entertaining trial run.
31:38Do you want to de-stem some cherry tomatoes?
31:40Sure.
31:41Okay.
31:42John challenged us to have a dinner party in our trailer.
31:47Xanthe is an amazing cook.
31:49Her typical meals are very elaborate.
31:52I'm just going to put them around here.
31:55Small space in the trailer.
31:57Kitchen's not ideal.
31:58This is, like, super cramped.
31:59Where are the olives and all this mess?
32:01It's a natural place for olives, right, under a head of lettuce.
32:04The lack of counter space is giving me some issues.
32:07Oh, can you cut some onion?
32:09Oh, there it is.
32:10Honestly, it is a little bit of a challenge.
32:13I really hope that they can deliver on what we've asked,
32:15because if not, I'm not sure the tiny house is, you know, long-term going to work for me.
32:21I don't know why!
32:22Yay!
32:23And it's, like, good local stuff.
32:24This challenge is all about feeling what the difference is like
32:28preparing a big meal in a small kitchen as opposed to theorizing on it.
32:32Come on in.
32:33Look at that!
32:34Oh, more wine!
32:35We brought some wine.
32:36Oh, yes.
32:37This is what we need.
32:39More wine.
32:40The food was great, but the quarters were very tight for the couple and their friends.
32:44Are you going to be able to cook for 15 people in a small kitchen like this?
32:47I think so.
32:49You know what?
32:50To figuring that out for all of us is okay.
32:54A big part of the solution had to be the outdoor space.
32:57I'm going to build three identical redwood benches.
33:00The backrest of each one will fold down, allowing all three to fit together,
33:04creating one large hexagonal table.
33:07Between the greenhouse, indoor table, and these transforming benches,
33:10Scott and Xanthe will have no shortage of options for entertaining inside and out.
33:16They were happy to be out of the trailer, but would they love their new permanent tiny space?
33:21What do we have here?
33:22Wow.
33:23Wow.
33:27It's incredible.
33:28Love it.
33:34Even though it's a greenhouse, it looks like a room you just want to sit and nest in and enjoy an evening in.
33:40That's exactly what we needed.
33:41This looks like it'll fit 12 people.
33:44The whole space is amazing.
33:46I mean, look at this.
33:47The grill's built into it.
33:48It's the outdoor kitchen.
33:49It is.
33:50On the way to the outdoor dining room.
33:51Wow.
33:52These are great.
33:53The outdoor setup was a hit, but how about the inside?
33:56It's exactly what I wanted.
33:58Look at this huge oven.
34:00We can do Thanksgiving here.
34:02Look at the counter space.
34:03And look at the sink.
34:04I mean, it's the little things in life, but the sink is very exciting for me.
34:08Man, this is a chef's kitchen.
34:10It is.
34:11There are some limitations, even with a much bigger kitchen than you were using in the RV.
34:16And Zach came up with what I was trying to bill as like a 7 or 8 and 1.
34:20I think we settled for like 3 or 4 and 1.
34:23Well, how it works is essentially...
34:25Wow.
34:27Right here, you have just a little fold-down stepstool.
34:30Wow.
34:31And then handrail holds out.
34:33Now...
34:35My God.
34:36You can stand on the whole thing?
34:37I'm a little height-challenged, so it was really nice of Zach to think of that.
34:41Wow.
34:42Very nice.
34:43Now, you just pull these sliders out.
34:46Now, this leafs open.
34:48Oh.
34:49Now you have...
34:50Voila, you got your marble.
34:51This is fantastic.
34:52It's like a piece of art.
34:54But that's only two uses.
34:56Oh.
34:57This just slides right over.
34:59And now, when your leaf opens, it leafs again.
35:03Wow.
35:04And it drops into place.
35:05Now, we have these pieces that it can work as a table.
35:11This is like an engineering marvel that you guys have done.
35:14But the surprises weren't over.
35:17If you're actually interested in coming out here and enjoying the view and having dinner, the two of you,
35:22it's as simple as pulling a little pin.
35:26Now, the backrest rotates down.
35:28Oh.
35:29I just have such joy in seeing the creativity that Zach and John put into the pieces that he knows would fit with what we want.
35:38How cool is this?
35:41You can seat eight inside, 12 in the greenhouse, and probably nine at that table.
35:47Even our old house couldn't seat that many people.
35:50So, going tiny has actually become a boon in terms of entertaining.
35:56We've seen tons of kitchen wizardry from John and Zach on our Tiny House Nation Countdown.
36:02Now, time for the build that beats them all.
36:05It's a couple with a peculiar profession, ready to go hog wild in a new tiny home.
36:10John and Zach traveled to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to help out a very special couple.
36:15Carol and Charlie run the Hambone Express, a traveling pig racing attraction.
36:21Carol and Charlie were fixing to move out of their pig racing tractor trailer into a converted bus.
36:27They may have said they're prepared for a tiny home, but John and Zach were hearing some mixed signals.
36:34I want my kitchen out there, and I want it big enough to break bread with my people.
36:40Outside, people are more free to visit.
36:42I haven't had a full-size oven in 16 years. I got a little apartment one.
36:46And you're actually talking about, like, really kind of crafting a bit of a kitchen out here.
36:51An outdoor room.
36:52Wow, okay.
36:53There's a fair amount of work involved in that.
36:56Manpower is what we're really talking about, right?
36:58Right, because to do an outdoor room, to do a kitchen, that's going to take a lot more manpower, a lot more resources.
37:04And so that's the alarm bell that's going off in my head.
37:07It seemed like Carol's idea of a cookout was nowhere near tiny.
37:11John and Zach wanted to see exactly how this couple throws down when it comes to serving up barbecue.
37:18Let's go.
37:23We're from the South, and when you gather people, you cook.
37:26And that's what Charlie and I like to do, throw down a good meal and have friends over, and we take a lot of pride in it.
37:32Whoopee! See ya!
37:34Charlie did it, boy!
37:35Oh, my goodness.
37:36I knew that there was ribs getting smoked, because I could smell them all day long.
37:40But I didn't expect the whole buffet table.
37:42I don't know how I'm going to work after this.
37:44I don't know if there's enough room on my plate.
37:47Slowly.
37:48Quinoa. You guys must have known I was from California.
37:51Oh, it's tabbouleh.
37:52Oh.
37:53I love tabbouleh. It was awesome.
37:55I've never tried it.
37:57I got ribs.
37:58It was up to Zach and John to put a tiny spin on Carol's grand plans.
38:03So they called in a crew of local craftsmen to help with that crucial outdoor space.
38:08They're going to be putting together Charlie and Carol's Outdoor Party Central, which will include an outdoor kitchen and a large table.
38:16I mean, it's going to blow her mind.
38:17Oh, yeah.
38:18The crew worked day and night to make it happen.
38:21Then it was time to unveil this combination bus and barbecue creation to Carol and Charlie.
38:28Wow.
38:34Kind of overwhelmed.
38:37Did you ever think it would look this beautiful on your land?
38:41No.
38:42No.
38:43This is unbelievable.
38:44You guys, this is insane.
38:47This has been a dream for two years.
38:50It's something else.
38:53This is the first time I've seen you guys speechless all week.
38:56I can't believe we have this place to call our home when we're done big racing.
39:01There is so much to show you, and so much of it is outside.
39:04But we want you guys to get inside where you're going to be living.
39:07It's time to get in that bus and check out your new home.
39:10All right?
39:14This is for us?
39:16Yep.
39:17Wow.
39:21Okay.
39:23Oh, look at the tile.
39:25That's so cool.
39:30It is more than I've ever could have wrapped my mind around.
39:34And these pig racers had even more in store when they got a closer look at their barbecue paradise.
39:40Wow.
39:41It's a lot to take in.
39:42Yeah.
39:43You've got fridge space under here.
39:44You've got all this counter space.
39:46The bar to belly up to.
39:48You've got your full-size stove and oven.
39:52Wow.
39:53I'm going big tiny.
39:55Yeah, absolutely.
39:56I mean, this is not a room.
39:58This is like a restaurant.
39:59We need a restaurant in a lot of our meals.
40:01Yeah, I know.
40:02From the moment we met the two of you, it was so obvious that you recharge by having friends and family around you.
40:09You attract that.
40:11Well, now we can have family dinners here, and everybody doesn't have to sit on a stool or a hay bale.
40:16Absolutely.
40:17It's amazing.
40:18With that, Carol and Charlie had made that big leap into Tiny House Nation.
40:26And they were just a few of many foodie friends, the Tiny House Nation guests who've made kitchens and eating spaces a top priority.
40:35They inspired the team to design little spaces that were still fit for feasting, proving that even tiny houses still have room for some very big appetites.
40:47TINY HOUSE NATION
