What is the Difference Between Mutant and Inhuman ?
In Marvel comics we have several races that differ from the common human. With this, people emerge with a series of special abilities, capable of doing great wonders in the stories of this universe. In the midst of all this we have two species that are quite similar: mutants and inhumans. But, after all, what is the difference between the two?
Basically, the main differences between mutants and inhumans are in their DNA, the way their powers manifest themselves and the way each species organizes itself. Let's talk about each of these cases!

A different DNA
Mutants are from the superior Homo sapiens race, people who were born with the X Gene, who were created through genetic enhancement caused by the Celestials in primitive humans, something that is usually just called natural selection.
They are, therefore, different from Homo sapiens, ordinary humans — even those endowed with powers, such as Doctor Strange and Spider-Man — since from birth they already have a characteristic in their DNA that differentiates them.
As we saw in the X-Men comics, not everyone who possesses the X Gene is gifted with incredible super powers. In fact, this is proportionally unusual. Most Superior Homo Sapiens may only have some physical change or deformity.
The Inhumans are of the Inhomo Supremis or Homo sapiens inhumanus race, they were created through Kree experimentation that sought to evolve Earth's primitive humans so that they could be used as super soldiers in the war against the Skrulls.
In other words, they have always been genetically programmed to be powerful and lethal. Therefore, even without going through Terrigenesis and gaining their special abilities, inhumans already have a set of superhuman characteristics — such as superhuman strength, resistance, stamina and agility. Because of this, we basically don't have inhumans who are just bizarre or have some negative physical alteration.

The development of your powers
Even though some mutants are already different from birth — which usually results in the abandonment of children or persecution by extremist groups at an early age — most mutants only develop their powers (and activate the X Gene) after a traumatic situation or during puberty.
Jean Grey, for example, was already a superior Homo sapiens from birth. However, her mutant gifts were only activated after witnessing her best friend being run over and killed. Kitty Pryde, on the other hand, developed her mutant powers during puberty. Meanwhile, Noturno already had his physical changes — three fingers on each hand, tail and bluish fur — since birth, which led to him being abandoned.

Extremely different societies
Inhuman society is extremely different from human (and mutant) society. Focused on well-defined laws and committed to the mission of genetic improvement, all aspects of society are well controlled and organized.

00:00What is the difference between mutant and inhuman? In Marvel comics, we have several
00:03races that differ from the common human. With this, people emerge with a series of special
00:07abilities capable of doing great wonders in the stories of this universe. In the midst of all this,
00:12we have two species that are quite similar, mutants and inhumans. But, after all, what is
00:17the difference between the two? Basically, the main differences between mutants and inhumans
00:21are in their DNA, the way their powers manifest themselves and the way each species organizes
00:25itself. Let's talk about each of these cases. A different DNA. Mutants are from the superior
00:30Homo sapiens race, people who were born with the X gene, who were created through genetic
00:34enhancement caused by the celestials and primitive humans, something that is usually just called
00:37natural selection. They are, therefore, different from Homo sapiens, ordinary humans, even those
00:42endowed with powers, such as Doctor Strange and Spider-Man. Since from birth, they already have
00:46a characteristic in their DNA that differentiates them. As we saw in the X-Men comics, not everyone
00:51who possesses the X gene is gifted with incredible superpowers. In fact, this is proportionally
00:56unusual. Most superior Homo sapiens may only have some physical change or deformity. The inhumans
01:01are of the inhomo supremus or Homo sapiens inhuman race. They were created through Kree
01:05experimentation that sought to evolve Earth's primitive humans so that they could be used as
01:08super soldiers in the war against the Skrulls. In other words, they have always been genetically
01:12programmed to be powerful and lethal. Therefore, even without going through terigenesis and gaining
01:17their special abilities, inhumans already have a set of superhuman characteristics,
01:21such as superhuman strength, resistance, stamina, and agility. Because of this,
01:25we basically don't have inhumans who are just bizarre or have some negative physical alteration.
01:29There are also neo-inhumans, people who underwent genetic alteration due to the explosion of the
01:34terigen bomb. Thus, even though they were not descendants of the Kree experiments,
01:37they also had their DNA altered, making it compatible with that of the inhomo supremus.
01:41The Development of Your Powers Even though some mutants are already
01:44different from birth, which usually results in the abandonment of children or persecution by
01:48extremist groups at an early age, most mutants only develop their powers and activate the X-gene
01:53after a traumatic situation or during puberty. Jean Grey, for example, was already a superior
01:58homo sapiens from birth. However, her mutant gifts were only activated after witnessing her
02:02best friend being run over and killed. Kitty Pride, on the other hand, developed her mutant
02:06powers during puberty. Meanwhile, Noturno already had his physical changes, three fingers on each
02:12hand, tail, and bluish fur, since birth, which led to him being abandoned. Inhumans must pass
02:17through the terigen mist, a process known as the sacred ceremony of terigenesis, to gain their
02:21powers and discover what their role will be in inhuman society. Thus, Inhumans are exposed to
02:26the mist that is capable of awakening the superior powers and characteristics that were encoded in
02:30their DNA. In this way, Black Bolt and Medusa are examples of Inhumans who descend from Kree
02:34experiments, discovering their gifts after undergoing the sacred ceremony. Kamala Khan,
02:39Ms. Marvel, is part of the Neo-Inhumans. Having been born on Earth, she only developed her powers
02:44after being exposed to the terigen bomb mist. Extremely Different Societies
02:48Inhuman society is extremely different from human, and mutant, society. Focused on well-defined laws
02:53and committed to the mission of genetic improvement, all aspects of society are well-controlled and
02:57organized. Everything follows the precepts defined by the genetic council and even the royal family.
03:02Black Bolt, Medusa, and company, the leaders of this species, need to submit to a series of rules
03:06that have been established. Thus, largely due to their inhuman powers and abilities, they are
03:11assimilated into a caste system, having to fulfill a specific function for the development of society
03:15until the end of their lives. The genetic council also defines the relationship between different
03:19species, prohibiting marriage and reproduction. Except in the case of Chrysalis, who managed to
03:23marry Mercury, at the time considered a mutant, when he fled his kingdom. Even reproduction among
03:28Inhumans is controlled by the council, as we saw when Medusa was rejected for becoming pregnant by
03:32Black Bolt without authorization. Something that would not be granted due to the risk of having a
03:36child with even greater powers than her parents. Mutants, as we know, did not have any kind of
03:40organized society until recently. Living among humans and trying to survive the massacres they
03:45caused, mutants lived mainly in groups like the X-Men. The attempts at a nation society, like the
03:49dream of Genosha, were not structured as rigidly as that of the Inhumans, being more of a great
03:53hub in which mutants could live in safety, until major terrorist attacks destroyed everything and
03:58massacred thousands of people. Recently, in the age of Krakoa, we finally saw mutants establish
04:02themselves as a country. With this, there is a joint effort by mutants, part of the silent council,
04:07to create laws, with the main one being the prohibition of killing humans, except in specific
04:11cases, and to stimulate the species culture. However, even so, there is no caste system nor
04:16an obligation of servitude or control for each person's individual actions. Who came first,
04:21the mutant or the Inhuman? The mutants appeared in 1963, shining in the pages of X-Men No. 1,
04:26created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Since then, despite the ups and downs at the publisher,
04:31they have remained one of the most popular and relevant species in comics, gaining even more
04:34prominence in recent years with the age of Krakoa. The Inhumans, in turn, appeared two years later,
04:39in 1965, appearing as supporting characters in Fantastic Four No. 45, a Fantastic Four story,
04:45also created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. With a modest stake in Marvel, they gained more prominence
04:49during the period in which fans, and other writers, suspected there was a boycott of X-Men comics,
04:53between 2015 and 2018. In the chronology of the comics, this idea also remains, and the mutants
04:59appeared first, after the Celestials developed the species before the Krees carried out genetic
05:04experimentation to create the Inhumans.
