00:00Analysts say Economy Minister Rafizi Romney's pledge to resign if he loses his bid for re-election as PKR Deputy President is understandable.

00:11Speaking to FMT, Azmi Hassan of Akademi Nusantara said Rafizi is well aware that his Cabinet appointment was due to his position as PKR Deputy President and not because of his expertise in economics, which others in the government are better equipped to handle.

00:27On a recent episode of his Young Bakar Mentri podcast, Rafizi said leaving the Cabinet would be a welcome relief, giving him more time and the freedom to speak out on various issues.

00:38He said it would also give him the opportunity to focus on his responsibilities as Pandan MP while helping PKR to prepare for the 16th general election.

00:48Meanwhile, Shahza Shukri of the International Islamic University Malaysia said that while Rafizi may appear unconcerned about his ministerial post, he likely sees losing his party position as equivalent to losing his mandate to represent PKR in the government.

01:03However, Shahza questioned the timing of Rafizi's statement, made in the run-up to the party polls saying it made him appear petty, especially since he claimed he would be fine with losing as being a minister is difficult, yet chose to contest again.

01:18Asmi also suggested that Rafizi may be seeking sympathy votes from PKR delegates, a strategy that could work if they believe he has performed well as economy minister, though it might backfire as some within the party reportedly hold a less favorable view of his performance.
