00:00In 2013, the V8 supercars have criss-crossed the globe to bring you the best racing on record.
00:11The Giz is the Clipsal champion of 2013.
00:15From the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide, we headed south to Tasmania.
00:21Fabian Coulthard wins the 60-60 race at Simmons Plains.
00:26From Tassie, it was across the ditch to Auckland.
00:30There's a new kid in town in the V8 supercars.
00:33His name is Scott McLaughlin.
00:34He's on the champions list.
00:36Then, way back west to Barbegello in Perth.
00:40The People's Champion today becomes the all-time race winner.
00:45Craig Lowndes, 91 career victories.
00:48And then, the Long Haul to Longhorn Territory for the Austin 400 in Texas.
00:55That's a Texan triple for Jody Wink.
00:58Oh, yeah!
00:58Now, back on home soil, we're in the top end for the Sky City Triple Crown from Hidden Valley Raceway in Darwin.
01:07Green flag, green flag.
01:08Keep your eyes on the prize, buddy.
01:10It is time to let them loose in the top end.
01:13Now forward for it!
01:16Unbelievable!
01:17We've covered more than 45,000 kilometres.
01:25It's the biggest road trip in Australian sport.
01:27There's no need to pack your bags because you have the best seat in the house.
01:32Oh!
01:32The teammates actually come up the inside.
01:35Unbelievable restart!
01:37Contact!
01:38The V8 Supercars, live and free, right here on 7.
01:48From one hot round to another, the V8 Supercars are back home.
01:52Isn't it great?
01:53Another great reception here in the top end as well.
01:55It is one of the most popular stops on the circuit.
01:58It's such a friendly city, a real different feel, a fun racetrack and another blast of sunshine at just the right time of the year.
02:06The great news is a new deal has been inked to keep us going until at least 2018.
02:12So this is event number six on the calendar.
02:14The Sky City Triple Crown here in Darwin.
02:17Our venue, of course, is Hidden Valley Raceway.
02:19So last stop was Austin, Texas.
02:22Great to be back home.
02:23Hidden Valley we know so well in the V8 Supercar Championship.
02:26An event held here every year since 1998.
02:30This is our circuit.
02:312.87 kilometres long.
02:3214 turns.
02:33Eight of them left and six right.
02:35The top speed down to turn one of about 266 kilometres.
02:39That main straight dominates the landscape at just over a kilometre long.
02:44The rest of the circuit, as you see, sector two and then into sector three.
02:48Needs a car that can handle plenty of direction change because there is a lot of it.
02:52So the key factors today, as always, tyre light and heat.
02:57Race 17 of the championship today.
03:00The 60-60 Super Sprint format returns.
03:02We used it in Tasmania and Western Australia.
03:05Qualifying made up of a 20-minute session now and then a top 10 shootout to determine pole position.
03:1231 degrees, they're telling us today.
03:13It's actually quite mild compared to yesterday when we had the four practice sessions.
03:18It was real sticky heat and there's a bit of a breeze coming across the circuit.
03:22So, wonderful conditions.
03:25The cars of the future now well and truly embedded in our sport.
03:28It exit is now open.
03:30And if you missed it yesterday, they were all playing the tyre game in practice.
03:34We ended up with a practice sheet that was, well, history-making really.
03:38We had a Ford, a Mercedes and a Holden, one, two and three.
03:41We had all four manufacturers inside the top five on the list and all four Nissans inside the top ten.
03:49But today will be a much different day.
03:51And a couple of key points to take note as we go into a brand new weekend of V8 Super Car Racing.
03:58Matty, 60-60 Super Sprint Racing today.
04:00Off the hard tyre tomorrow, races will involve drivers using both the option Dunlop tyres, the soft and the harder tyre for both those events.
04:10It's a very important weekend for Russell Ingle.
04:14He equals John Bauer.
04:17All-time number of starts in the category.
04:19So, not only is the most experienced man there, he is car number 66, Super Cheap Auto Racing, in this field.
04:24But he's about to become the most experienced of all time.
04:26Ten drivers in the field have won races here.
04:31And we're looking forward to a resumption of this championship battle.
04:36Recall last year, both Wind Cup and Lowndes were very, very strong.
04:40A couple of other things to tick off.
04:41We won't bog down in the detail, but there were seven penalties levied after we left Austin as well.
04:47Several drivers have had points adjustments coming into this weekend.
04:51And that's going to be a big talking point.
04:52Dunlop tyres this weekend and using both compounds, Mark.
04:55Afternoon.
04:56G'day, Crompo.
04:57And I'm really looking forward to this qualifying session and shootout today on the hard tyre.
05:02So, the hard tyre exclusively for the Saturday part of the weekend.
05:07In the 60-60 format, which we've been excited by.
05:11Especially the start is just an unbelievable line-up of cars.
05:17And the run down into Turn 1 will be very exciting.
05:20And this qualifying session will also be like that.
05:22There's a lot of cars that have gone out on wet tyres, Neil.
05:25Because they're trying to conserve the couple of sets of hard tyres to get the best run at the end of this session.
05:33And have tyres for the Top 10 shootout.
05:35Wind Cup very wide down there at Turn 5 then as he started his run.
05:39And big understeer.
05:41See the car sliding around a lot and the drivers will be speaking a lot about grip and lack of it this weekend.
05:46We know that this track surface is very different to the Austin track surface.
05:52It's got a couple of harsh little joins in it that Mark and I have spoken about over the years.
05:56We've been coming here.
05:57Here's one of them.
05:57We saw the other one also back at Turn 10.
06:00Cars react pretty violently to that.
06:02A lot of guys yesterday saying that it was like ice or a wet racetrack.
06:05That red light on the boot of the cars indicates the wet tyre.
06:13So a lot of the guys have gone out on the wet tyre just to warm the car up.
06:15Get the brake temperatures up.
06:16Get their eye in.
06:17Get organised.
06:18Before they put those green tyres on that we saw lined up there for Michael Caruso a little while ago.
06:23Laying in the sun which is the smart thing to do.
06:25So you set the pressures in the cold.
06:28This is Wind Cup.
06:29Big slide off Turn 5.
06:30And then when he ran up into the slowest corner on the track at Turn 6 he had a big moment also.
06:36So a lot of understeer on the way in.
06:38Run right out.
06:40Wasn't it?
06:40Miles away.
06:41Miles off the apex.
06:43So what you do is you set the tyre pressures in the morning in the cool.
06:47And then you put them out in the sun and they generate that temperature that improves their efficiency straight away.
06:53That's the wet tyre that's been used on the cars to start this session.
06:56Many cars out there on wets.
06:59About half the field out there on wets.
07:02New livery this weekend for Scott Pye.
07:05Backing from a variety of businesses here in the Northern Territory.
07:09Covered off the ups and downs of his championship season.
07:12It's his first full-time season in the main game.
07:15And Paul Morris who also works in that team has got some significant business investments up here in the north.
07:20There's the man that was fastest yesterday.
07:23You heard him say on V8 Extra a little earlier he wasn't totally thrilled with the car.
07:26There was a universal complaint.
07:28They were all moaning and groaning to varying degrees out there.
07:31Just looking at those that have had success here.
07:33Scafie and Matt Craig-Lounce with five wins.
07:36Jason Bright, Garth Tander, Todd Kelly, Jamie Winkup have all had four race wins here over the years.
07:42Mark Winn at bottom on screen there a moment ago.
07:43Rick Kelly with a couple of wins.
07:45Michael Caruso, Shane Van Gisbergen have also won here as well.
07:49They're the guys that have got the numbers on the board over the years.
07:51And the old mate here at the box has done a bit of winning here too.
07:55He went okay here over the years.
07:57Over the long years that he was here as well.
07:58Most poles, four for Scafie.
08:00Most wins at this circuit, eight for Mark as well.
08:03The interesting one that you just mentioned about Jamie Winkup,
08:06as we ride here with Scotty McLaughlin,
08:08is Winkup's never had pole position at this circuit.
08:10He's already got six, eight for the season, 45 in his career.
08:14He's still trying to get that elusive one at Hidden Valley.
08:16Yeah, Triple Eight had a struggle here to be on the front row.
08:20They've been up near it, but they haven't actually got the job done.
08:23Mark Larkham and I refer to that period that you made reference to before
08:26as the scape years.
08:28Our recollection of it wasn't that pleasant.
08:30It was kind of like a trip to the dentist on repeat cycle.
08:33Stop it.
08:34Six hundred and seventy days or something.
08:36Too much.
08:37Scotty's not feeling too well this weekend, Scott McLaughlin.
08:40He's got a bit of the flu.
08:43Had a good chat to him yesterday.
08:44Just about how much life has changed since he's become a V8 supercar main game driver.
08:52And effectively, in a nutshell, life is much busier.
08:55He's had a little mistake there and he's actually backed away from it now.
08:58They're going to really manage tyres very carefully this weekend.
09:03They're going to have to be super careful.
09:04There's only 20 of them in total.
09:06Eight of the soft tyres, 12 of the hard tyres.
09:09This is one of the great stories of our championship season.
09:12Young Chas Mostad, who's under contract to Ford Performance Racing, on loan to Dick Johnson,
09:17racing in the Wilson Security Falcon here.
09:19And he's made his presence felt immediately when he joined Western Australia.
09:22A couple of events back.
09:24And he's going to go up near the top.
09:25In fact, he's gone to the top on a one minute 10.6.
09:28Displacing Michael Caruso, who's got an affinity with this place.
09:32He's got a race win to his name here, as I detailed a moment ago.
09:35And he was quick yesterday.
09:36It's funny how some locations over and over meet a driver's eye, Scafie.
09:41It's weird, isn't it?
09:42There's some places where guys just click and other places they don't.
09:45Well, and for him, for Wing Cup not to have had a pole, given his record and the qualifying
09:49performances at places we've seen, and what an extraordinary record that that is.
09:54I mean, some of these laps are the best in history.
09:56They are unbelievable laps.
09:58To not have a pole position here is very weird.
10:00Just seeing Garth Tander employ an interesting little strategy down here, which will be
10:05very useful.
10:05He was the first down on a green set of tyres, but he's done one lap.
10:09Come in, he's pulled a set off the rear, the ones that have just warmed up a little bit,
10:13and put a fresh set just across the rear.
10:16And what that'll help him do is maintain a little bit of heat in his front tyres that
10:20have been used.
10:20Now, you've got to look at this straight here.
10:22950 metres long.
10:23The most critical thing will be the way your car steers onto the straight.
10:28If you've got cold front tyres, and you compromise that steering onto the straight, get worried
10:32about getting your power down.
10:34Yeah, like, it's a really good point.
10:35A lot of guys are saying that when...
10:37The guys are using lower tyre pressures than they normally have run over the years.
10:41When you go out on a brand new tyre and the tyre's green, although it's got great grip,
10:46it hasn't got very much stability in the case of the tyre when you run the tyre pressure
10:50so low.
10:51So one of the things the guys are doing is going and running the case, run the tyre, make
10:57it so that they've actually got greater durability, and then put them back on the car.
11:01And they believe they've got better stability without losing any grip.
11:04So a lot of the guys are complaining about a very similar thing, and the braking at the
11:08end of this straight is one of the most important braking areas in the country.
11:11Wink up now to the top with a 10.56.
11:13And Courtney's sector split to the second sector means that he could well go to the top, and
11:17has done on a one-minute 10.1.
11:19They tested at Winton, the Holden Racing Team.
11:21And that was Garth Tander and James Courtney, together with Ford Performance Racing.
11:26And there's Lowndes on screen.
11:27He's just punched out a 10.08.
11:30Shane Van Guisberg is looking racy as well.
11:32He's off to New Zealand next weekend for the continuation of his run in drift cars.
11:37He's been a busy man.
11:37He came back from Austin, went straight to New Zealand for the Super Tourers, back up
11:41here this weekend for V8 Supercar Racing, and back to New Zealand next week.
11:45So he's got to actually scratch his head from time to time, think about which car he's in.
11:48So Lowndes, the fast man from James Courtney.
11:51Now Shane pops up to position number three for VIP Pet Foods, as David Reynolds in the
11:56foreground was strong here last year.
11:58He's in position four.
12:00I spoke to Garth last night and asked whether or not what they learned at Winton translated,
12:04and he said the answer was Winton, 10 degrees, Darwin, 30 degrees.
12:09Answered no.
12:10They didn't quite turn up here with the speed that they thought they may have had.
12:13Again, they've done further changes overnight to try and improve the car, and that time
12:18of his now pops him up to fifth.
12:21Back on board with James Courtney.
12:22He hung out at the Indy 500 with his friend Dario, friend Kitty, who crashed out of the
12:2697th running of the 500 a couple of weeks ago.
12:30And there's Garth off the road, his teammate sadly, down at turn one.
12:33And Gisbergen's on very fast sector split to the first intermediate into turn five.
12:39We'll get another indication up here near turn 10 as to how he's continuing to track.
12:44He's fractionally slower.
12:46Not an easy racetrack to glue together the three sectors.
12:51Clearly the first sector's pretty much all about your peak speed and your braking efficiency
12:55and hitting your target at turn one.
12:57And then the complexity of the racetrack really ramps up from when you head up into the valley.
13:04And the demand here in terms of car control is very high because the grip level is low
13:10and you've got to drive the car right to the edge of the grip level without overdriving it.
13:15So we are looking for top 10 cars to make it through to the shootout to determine pole position.
13:21Most of them heading in towards pit lane.
13:23Craig Lowndes leads the way.
13:251.10.08 is the time to beat.
13:28He's got James Courtney on his hammer and Will Davison's just bought into the top three.
13:38Welcome back.
13:38It's about to get a bit crazy here at Hidden Valley.
13:41It's seven minutes to go in this qualifying session to determine the top 10 list with a shootout.
13:47Jason Bright, Team BOC, currently sixth.
13:50Will Davison leads the way in the break.
13:53Him and Fabian Coulthard went into the nine.
13:56So the leading time is 1.09.93.
13:59Fabian Coulthard, 0.05 behind.
14:02Then it's Lowndes, Courtney Slade, Bright, Van Gisbergen,
14:06Jono Webb, David Reynolds and Chas Mostert inside the top 10.
14:12And your series leader, Winkup down in 14.
14:15T3 there at the moment, T3, Barnes and Davidson with a 9.93.
14:21Coulthard with a 9.90.
14:23You with a 10.00.
14:24As we look at Scotty, McLaughlin with a huge lock up there at the front left, very easily done up there at turns 9.10.
14:31Interesting to note that Winterbottom at this stage is 28th in the field, so he hasn't fired the competitive shot.
14:37Only got six minutes remaining, so we'll get to the happy hour phase of qualifying.
14:41And to Matt's point earlier, remember that this is all about getting a ticket into the shootout.
14:45This one doesn't determine pole, so it's Davidson, Coulthard, Bright, because it's the tree.
14:50It's that deal at the moment where there's only about half a dozen cars on the racetrack.
14:54Heaps of them in there discussing changes and looking for another tyre set now.
14:59And this is Winterbottom, I made reference to, now trying to get some open space.
15:05Pole sitter in Tasmania, yet to win a race.
15:07Will Davidson, the only four to break through for a race win in 2013.
15:13So, Frosty really trying to get this season going.
15:18And that puts him to fifth.
15:21So, 1.10.11 for Mark Winterbottom.
15:26Four pole positions here, both days in 2011.
15:30You know, only once in 13 qualifying sessions here, Mark Winterbottom has been outside the top ten.
15:36This guy on screen has won a couple of races here back in 2004 in 2011.
15:40Plus, he's also had a pole in 2007.
15:43Rick Kelly, Jack Daniels Racing.
15:45Twelfth visit, but the first time for him in the Nissan Altima.
15:48We were all pleasantly surprised by the pace of their cars at Austin in Texas.
15:54There was a lot of panic chat earlier in the weekend.
15:56But the front straight and the run up to turn one may have hurt.
16:00But they had a terrific result there.
16:03All four cars, as you said, Matt, in V8 Extra inside that top ten in practice yesterday was a good outcome.
16:09This is a good lap for Winterbottom.
16:11This will be better than his 10.11.
16:14Very, very committed.
16:16All right on the limit.
16:17Just gets it turned.
16:18Makes the apex really nicely.
16:20Very good.
16:21Exit onto the straight.
16:22Nice and controlled.
16:25Throttle application.
16:26And let's see what it does.
16:29And goes to the top of the 969.
16:31Great job.
16:32Very, very good lap.
16:34What was interesting with the onboard shot there at the final turn at turn 14 was how little wheel work was involved.
16:39It didn't even look like he had a lot of steering angle on.
16:42So the car was very neutral and the progression of the throttle was beautiful.
16:46That was great for us to be with him for that because that last part of the lap was as committed and right to the level of the tyre grip as I've seen around here.
16:56That was a very, very good lap.
16:57When you've got 0.2 on the field with a 969, very impressive performance.
17:02Young James Small there is Mark Winterbottom's engineer.
17:06They'll be reporting back about what they do with the car now.
17:08But with only three and a half minutes to go, he is the guy now to catch.
17:13And what you just described about what we saw with Mark Winterbottom is exactly what this man, Rick Kelly, was talking about after practice about this circuit.
17:20You've got to be gentle on brakes, gentle on steering, but you've got to be patient on the exit of each corner.
17:26And Frosty showed pure patience there and car control to set the benchmark time.
17:31So let's see what Rick Kelly can do here.
17:35He crosses the line and moves up the field.
17:37It's a good job.
17:40So there's only three cars in the pit lane now.
17:4425 cars are out on the racetrack.
17:46And this is Jonathan Webcar, 19, Darrell Lee, techno auto sports entry.
17:50Good strong run for him and a recovery.
17:52Improved his championship position at Austin in Texas.
17:55It was an important weekend.
17:57He had a great race with his team mate Shane Van Gisbergen over there.
18:00Dean Fiore, great job.
18:02Neil has come up to six.
18:03So Winterbottom, Davison, Fabian Coulthard, Wright, Lowndes, Fiore.
18:07Oh, big slide by Webb at the top of the hill.
18:10That was wild.
18:11Turn 10 right out sideways.
18:14And it bounced and dropped the right rear into the grass.
18:16Someone's had a big lockup down there at turn one as well, sending smoke signals.
18:20Tandered it to number two.
18:21Great job.
18:21Nine-nine for Garth Tander.
18:24But where is our championship leader?
18:27You have to go searching right down towards 19th to find Jamie Winkup.
18:31Now Frosty's given it away.
18:33So he's parked on that nine-six at the moment.
18:36We're on board with Winkup coming out of the hairpin at turn six.
18:41What a wheel work.
18:41So the comparison of all the wheel work there with Jamie's car versus Mark Winterbottom was
18:47very noticeable.
18:49Particularly as he came off that hairpin.
18:51Coming up at turns nine and ten.
18:52And a couple of different lines up there.
18:53He's got a different line up there than what Winterbottom had.
18:57Nice apex.
18:59This would be a goodie.
19:00The sector splits good to the second sector.
19:02This is going to bolt him up to either the top or very close to it.
19:06Winkup points leader.
19:07What's he got by response?
19:09And he's good enough to bump Mark Winterbottom by an absolute tiny margin.
19:150.002.
19:17But look out.
19:18Fabian Coulthard is coming.
19:19He's already inside the top ten.
19:21Remember, we're looking for the ten here.
19:23With the shootout still ahead of us.
19:25Fabian Coulthard lit up the scoring box in the first sector as James Courtney
19:29comes around the final turn.
19:3513th.
19:35Now back to 14th.
19:37And pushed up into third.
19:41Great effort.
19:41So both the HRT cars, third and fourth in the top ten at the moment.
19:44Will Davison's on a very good sector split.
19:47Here he is on screen.
19:48Meantime, Lowndes is 12th.
19:50And that's been one of the big stories this year is the disparity in qualifying
19:54between the Red Bull teammates.
19:56So what's Will got in this final sector?
19:59That's a very committed end to that lap.
20:00He's sixth at the moment, Scafie.
20:02Coming up to the control line.
20:04It's Wincup, Winterbottom.
20:05And Will drops into fourth.
20:07Wincup, Winterbottom.
20:08Courtney, Davison, Tander, Van Gisbergen, Rick Kelly.
20:12Then Coulthard, Bright and Prem are in the ten at the moment.
20:15We'll see Davey Reynolds.
20:16Lowndes.
20:16You're on the fifth there and you asked the question about Lowndes.
20:19He responded with two green boxes.
20:21So quickest to the first and second sector.
20:23He's currently outside the ten.
20:25Not anymore.
20:26He's at the top.
20:27109.68.
20:28And Bright just moved up as well.
20:30Bright's gone to fourth.
20:31Lowndes.
20:32Wincup.
20:32Winterbottom.
20:33Bright.
20:33Courtney.
20:34And we're watching James at the moment in the final corner.
20:36In the final sector.
20:38And Rick Kelly.
20:39There's ten cars for this top ten shootout.
20:41Rick Kelly's tenth.
20:42And there is 0.3 of a second covering ten cars.
20:47So the promise being shown by Tim Slade yesterday is being verified.
20:52He's 13th at the moment.
20:53So Coulthard out.
20:55He's pulled off the racetrack.
20:57He's 11th outside the top ten.
20:59That's a big story for the guy that's been vying for race wins.
21:02Had pole positions.
21:03And is in this championship battle.
21:06That is amazing.
21:07968.969.969.
21:11One hundredth of a second.
21:13In fact, 133 ten thousandths of a second.
21:16And cover the top three cars.
21:21Fabian will be cranky about the fact that there's three tenths between himself and Jason Bright.
21:25Here's James Moffat coming in.
21:27He's 27th in this field at the moment.
21:29And you said Fabian Coulthard.
21:31They'll be blowing.
21:32Because the second sector.
21:33They were up.
21:34So they should have been up in the top ten.
21:36It's the first time all year they haven't been in the top ten.
21:40Great job Jamie Wincup.
21:42So both Red Bulls at the top of the list.
21:47Then Ford Performance Racing.
21:48Then Team BOC Jason Bright.
21:50James Courtney.
21:52In fifth.
21:53Will Davison and David Reynolds there.
21:55So the FPR car's very strong in this qualifying session.
21:59Garth Tander joins his teammate.
22:00So Garth will start third out.
22:04Rick Killie will be the first out in the top ten shootout.
22:07And what could have been for Fabian Coulthard.
22:10Start from 11th.
22:12Scotty McLaughlin in 14th.
22:14Turned 20 just a few days ago.
22:15Said to me he feels like an old man now.
22:17So Murrow Engel in 21st.
22:19And Moffat and Russell Engel will start from the rear of the field.
22:23Craig Lowndes just tearing his helmet off at the moment.
22:28But Lowndes another great effort here.
22:31It's so tight at the top there.
22:32And yet you sweep through time and time again and just get that done.
22:35Yeah look Barrette it's nice.
22:37Obviously the car pace has been there all weekend.
22:40Yesterday it was a little bit hard through practice.
22:41Because we didn't opt to use those race set of tyres.
22:44But of course today it's all coming together.
22:45We've still got the top ten to go.
22:47But at least we're in good shape.
22:48We were worried early on in the season about the cars.
22:51And where the team might have been going.
22:52But the last few rounds you're really finding your feet.
22:54Yeah we are.
22:55I think that we've done a lot of work and a lot of homework since the early parts of the season.
22:59Tasmania was terrible.
23:00New Zealand didn't go any better.
23:01But of course since then Perth, Texas and of course here is definitely a lot better.
23:06And because we're more consistent.
23:07Not necessarily having the outright speed.
23:09Just being more consistent to be able to turn up at racetracks.
23:11And be able to produce good cars.
23:13And Lowndes you keep delivering too.
23:14Well yeah look it's nice.
23:16Young guys keep putting the pressure on.
23:17So I've got to do something.
23:19Good on you mate.
23:19All the best.
23:20Cheers.
23:20Thanks.
23:20He is a five time race winner at this circuit.
23:23Craig Lowndes.
23:24But he's only had one pole position way back in 2000.
23:27And as we mentioned his teammate Jamie Winkup.
23:30Who's already knocked up eight poles in 2013.
23:34Will go in search of his first P1 start at Hidden Valley.
23:37So the top ten shootout coming your way.
23:40Live right around the country.
23:41The V8 Supercars.
23:43Right after this.
23:43Rick Kelly is awaiting his orders to go out and have Hidden Valley Raceway all to himself.
24:01He's done that before.
24:02He's a former pole sitter here back in 2007.
24:05Of course back then he had the number one on his car and he was driving the toll HSV Commodore.
24:12What a difference all those years make.
24:14Now here's the Solnissan inside the top ten shootout.
24:19And Jack Daniels racing.
24:21The crew are standing by to see if Rick can collect a piece of Australian motorsport history here.
24:27He's had two victories at this circuit.
24:292004 and 2011.
24:31We know he's been to the top of the list in terms of the championship.
24:34So there's very little left for Rick to accomplish in this sport.
24:38A two time Bathurst winner as well.
24:42But wouldn't that be something if he could collect pole position for Nissan.
24:46And continue this great run boys that he got together in Austin.
24:50He was top ten in all four qualifying sessions.
24:53Top ten in all four races.
24:54And I reckon when you get to the end of the season after a lead in that these guys have had.
25:00A short lead in.
25:01They'll look back at that and say that was the weekend where we turned it around.
25:04And we're now part of the main game.
25:06No doubt.
25:06And to have five top ten qualifying performances in a row.
25:11Is a very very big moment for not only the re-entry of Nissan Motor Company into this sport.
25:15But for that team.
25:17So the top ten is made up of six Holdens.
25:19Three Fords and one Nissan.
25:20Ford Performance Racing have claimed the last four straight poles here.
25:24And Ford overall has won the last six.
25:27So maybe today is the day where something gives.
25:30And like many of the drivers he took the opportunity to take a break off the back of the U.S. trip.
25:37Went to Cabo in Mexico with Alicia.
25:40A little bit of decompressed time.
25:42Now it's a big focus on putting together one brilliant lap around here.
25:46Slid onto the main straight.
25:48And getting on cleanly with one progressive throttle application is vital.
25:52But he's got into turn one very well.
25:54And he's got through it and out the other side nicely.
25:56And this is a great ride.
25:58And the time to beat is a 24-08.
26:00Fabian Coulthard was the fastest in the first sector.
26:03They were the fastest.
26:04Car 15 was the fastest in this sector.
26:07The red sector that Matty White took you through was marked in red.
26:12And they were the fastest in qualifying in this middle part of the track.
26:16Remember the temps come up since qualifying.
26:20And he's now heading up towards turn 9-10.
26:22They kind of join together when you're in the race car.
26:24And there's another intermediate split here.
26:26So we'll get an indication of where he sits at 48-8.
26:29Not bad.
26:29About 0.4 away from the best we've seen this weekend.
26:32That little seam in the road is problematic for the drivers
26:35because it alters the way you brake and turn the car.
26:39And here's the run down to the control line now.
26:41We'll get our first reference in this shootout.
26:43So he did a 109.99 to get into the shootout.
26:47109.6.
26:48Good job.
26:49That's a good one.
26:49Excellent job, mate.
26:51Nice effort.
26:51Quicker than Quoll.
26:52So that's really good.
26:54We'll chat when you get back in.
26:56A car to be weighed in entry just before our bay.
26:59So remember to turn the car off all the way.
27:02And any time that you can do a better lap in your top 10 shootout
27:05than you actually qualified at is a very good driving performance.
27:10Smart call by Eric there to say let's chat about it when you get back.
27:13And that's code for let's not share it with the world
27:15because all competitors are listening
27:17and they don't want to give a track read away to everybody
27:19because one of the tricks about being effective in a shootout
27:22is the ability to basically leap over the high bar from a standing start.
27:26It's that whole business of not getting a track read
27:29and then having to go out and freestyle to some extent.
27:31So better than his qualifying performance.
27:34That was impressive.
27:35Little problem for this car yesterday.
27:37I thought it was a gearbox.
27:38It turned out to be a tail shark
27:39and he was quite happy with the car in practice
27:43and again in qualifying Shane Van Gisbergen.
27:46So not only a race win in Adelaide
27:48as you saw on the graphic there for this 24-year-old Kiwi
27:50but two pole positions to start the season.
27:56There's a detail a little bit earlier on.
27:58He's doing some drifting next week in New Zealand.
28:00Then fitted it right here in Darwin as well off turn one
28:03and he's flamboyant.
28:05He's had success here before
28:07and look at that.
28:08Up the pole.
28:09He's understood very wide at turn five.
28:11So the gain that he got
28:12was by poking it so deep into turn five
28:14but he immediately paid the invoice on the other side of it.
28:18And Van Gisbergen hasn't been back on the front row of the grid
28:20since the Clipsal 500.
28:23So his qualifying hasn't been as good in the recent past.
28:27He's had, as you said, good form here.
28:29He's got very good car control.
28:30It's the sort of circuit that brings that out.
28:33He made a big mistake here in the qualifying session.
28:35He hit that curve too hard on the left.
28:37He just gave it a little bit of a bump that time.
28:39To be 0.1 down on Rick at the second intermediate
28:42means that he didn't hurt as much as we probably thought.
28:45He's probably recovered a bit of it there
28:46but that will be a moment on the lap
28:48that he will be disappointed about.
28:53Look how close that is.
28:55109.961 for Kelly.
28:57109.962 for Van Gisbergen.
29:02And everybody's onto it in pit lane.
29:04Let's have a chat when we get back.
29:06So this is the moment into turn five.
29:08So you go over the little roller coaster
29:09and you've got to brake the car
29:10and get it onto the left-hand side of the road.
29:12He turned it in.
29:13It looked like it was going to make it.
29:15This is a great slow-mo shot.
29:16This is one of the best bits of this racetrack
29:19because it's the first right-hander
29:21and the left-hand tyres are cold.
29:23You can already see him start to apply some correction.
29:25The car starts to run towards the trajectory of the inside kerb
29:30but he's still on the brake
29:31and you can see how far past the apex he is there.
29:34He effectively runs way wide
29:36and that really hurt that lap.
29:38Yeah, so he's a good four or five metres away
29:41from where he wants to be there.
29:43And actually when you saw it in super slow-mo
29:45you can see it was the back of the car that disconnected first
29:47so when he catches it
29:49it's the catch that then takes you wide of the ideal target,
29:52the apex.
29:53Garth Tander
29:54benefiting from
29:57the test at Winton
29:59in the last couple of weeks
30:01and the gap between Austin and here
30:03and when they all ended up out there on new tyres
30:06today it was a bit of an equaliser.
30:07They weren't that happy in the garage yesterday
30:09with their practice form
30:10but as we've detailed
30:10so many people were cranky
30:12in lack of understanding
30:14of what the car was doing
30:15Look at that
30:15that just gone over
30:17picked the throttle up hard
30:18on the Exeter 1
30:19and that's just burning
30:21rooster tail of dirt
30:22so drops the right rear off
30:23for Garth Tander
30:24and that sticks in your craw
30:25unfortunately
30:26for the remainder of the lap
30:29that'll loom large in his mind
30:30so Garth will be pretty disappointed with that.
30:32He's formed this year in qualifying
30:34hasn't been what he would like
30:35he's only been in the top 10
30:37for half of the races so far
30:39so that little mistake
30:40will have cost him
30:42two or three tenths of a second
30:43we saw 0.28 was the number
30:45but it'll be a bit more than that in reality.
30:49He's one of three guys
30:50to have done every race here
30:52since 1998
30:53Russell Engel and Craig Lowndes
30:54the other two.
30:57So pretty oversteering
30:58car sliding a lot from the rear
31:00you can see it's either pretty stiff
31:01at the back
31:02or a lot of rear roll bar
31:04or rear spring
31:05or rear shock
31:06the car oversteering
31:07from turn one
31:08and for the rest of the lap
31:09the same
31:10and he will be very upset
31:11with a 10.39
31:12so he
31:13at a 10.4
31:15that is
31:16compared to his
31:179.9
31:19half a second away.
31:22This is the moment
31:23for Garth Tander
31:24Oh it doesn't take much
31:27does it?
31:27Well that's close to going
31:28in the fence over there.
31:30See there it is
31:30it just
31:30it gets away from him
31:32in the rear end
31:32as he
31:33gets to the
31:34latter part of the corner
31:35and then
31:36at that point
31:37he knows the cue is
31:38that he's got to
31:38get on with the throttle
31:39he's got to get out
31:40of the corner
31:41and it's
31:41completely got away from him.
31:43Here's David Reynolds
31:43the Botlow
31:44Ford Performance Racing Ford
31:46and a good turnaround
31:47from our last round
31:48for the 27 year old
31:50as you can see
31:52the career highlight
31:53there was definitely
31:54second in the great race
31:55in 2012
31:57behind Jamie Winkup
31:58and Paul Gumbrill
31:59but he was outside
32:00the top 10
32:00in all qualifiers
32:01in Austin, Texas
32:02so to come here
32:03and be part of this shootout
32:05and be part of the
32:06three FPR cars
32:07in the shootout
32:08will be a real boost.
32:10I think we had
32:10the evidence
32:11of the red limiter
32:12alive in the background
32:13there in top gear
32:14so that's a good run
32:15down for straight
32:16it's been a bit quiet
32:17this year
32:17there's been an engineering
32:18change for David
32:19and they're obviously
32:20dealing with the new car
32:21he's dealing with
32:22the new engineering
32:22relationship
32:23it's his fifth visit
32:24to Darwin
32:25he was very strong
32:26here last year
32:27good first sector
32:28very strong
32:30he's a good little driver
32:32isn't he
32:33he's got very good
32:33car control
32:34he's very very committed
32:35I was just going to mention
32:36that Dean Cantor
32:37had a good run of laps
32:39when they tested
32:39at Winton in this car
32:41and loved the feel
32:42of the car of the future
32:43it's the first time
32:44that Dean Cantor
32:45is an endurance driver
32:46had a crack at it
32:48so one green box
32:49for David Reynolds
32:50second marker
32:51coming up
32:51two green boxes
32:52almost four tenths up
32:54huge gains
32:54so if he gets the
32:56last sector of this
32:57just right
32:58that'll put him
32:59in provisional pole
33:00he qualified
33:00on the front row
33:02position two
33:02on the Saturday race
33:03for last year
33:04and then he went on
33:05to finish fifth
33:06as his best performance
33:07here in the top end
33:08and he's on target
33:09to sneak up
33:09to the top
33:10of this one
33:109-6
33:129-5
33:13well done
33:14very very good
33:15so David Reynolds
33:21the bottle of Ford
33:22he's at the top
33:23of the list
33:24after this
33:25Will Davison
33:26six cars to go
33:30in the top ten
33:30shootout here
33:31for race 17
33:32of the championship
33:33and it's car number
33:33six out there
33:34Will Davison
33:36back to back
33:38pole positions
33:3912 months ago
33:40at this round
33:41in fact Ford
33:41Performance Racing
33:42locked out pole position
33:44for the last two years
33:45straight
33:46and right now
33:46one of their stablemates
33:47David Reynolds
33:48heads the list
33:49so the time to beat
33:50is 109.503
33:53Will has already
33:54had a race win
33:55this season
33:56the only Ford driver
33:57to do so
33:58but yet to have
33:59a pole position
33:59he's qualified twice
34:01a second twice
34:02in New Zealand
34:03and WA
34:04it's been remiss
34:05of me so far
34:06Matt
34:06not to explain
34:07the tyre situation
34:08for everybody
34:08everybody's been
34:09on green
34:10hard compound tyres
34:12so they've all used
34:13new tyres
34:14for the shootout
34:15and they'll use
34:16the hard tyre
34:17all day today
34:18it's only tomorrow
34:19that involves
34:20the combination
34:21of both compounds
34:21of day
34:22so this is
34:24Will Davison
34:25spent time
34:27with Will Power
34:28at the Indy 500
34:29off the
34:30back of his
34:31Austin Tour
34:31got a lot

34:40generation car
34:41they've still got
34:43some days up
34:43their sleeves
34:44and that's the
34:45fastest first sector
34:46of the weekend
34:46for Will Davison
34:47and that 24.08
34:48that we saw
34:49before by
34:50teammate Dave
34:51Reynolds
34:51the 9.5
34:52was the best
34:52number we've
34:53seen all weekend
34:54so on those
34:55numbers that we
34:56just saw
34:56that Will
34:57punch up
34:57he might even
34:58further move
34:59that mark
34:59oh he's just
35:00lost it slightly
35:01in the second
35:01sector here
35:02had the hard
35:04cut alive
35:04in second
35:05gear
35:05as he came
35:05off the
35:06final corner
35:07it's going
35:07to be very
35:08close with
35:08Reynolds here
35:099.5.6
35:13it's very
35:13close
35:13good job mate

35:53America
35:53spent time
35:54at Florida

36:06what
36:06with a
36:06Winton Test
36:07in the
36:07middle
36:07with a
36:08Winton Test
36:08correct
36:09there's
36:09been some
36:09frequent
36:09flying damage
36:10done
36:10it was a
36:13good performance
36:14listen for
36:14the limiter
36:14just got
36:17on it
36:17and where
36:17those two
36:18lines converge
36:19from the
36:19end of pit
36:19lane
36:19that's the
36:20braking
36:20marker
36:20so he
36:21was very
36:21very deep
36:22and he
36:22got it
36:23stopped
36:23that was
36:23a very
36:23good piece
36:24of braking
36:24and he
36:25carried
36:26that brake
36:26oh he's
36:27almost done
36:27a Garth
36:28Tanner
36:28there
36:28he just
36:28managed
36:29to sneak
36:29it back
36:30off the
36:30apron
36:30and onto
36:31the
36:31racetrack
36:31proper
36:31and it
36:32was
36:32sliding
36:33second gear
36:35has to
36:36feed it
36:36a gear
36:36and he's
36:37very
36:37very close
36:37to the
36:38reference
36:39that's
36:39been set
36:39by David
36:40Reynolds
36:40at the
36:40first
36:41timing
36:41intermediate
36:41into turn
36:42five
36:42he carried
36:43the brake
36:44a lot
36:44through turn
36:44one
36:45there
36:45scope
36:45in
36:45he
36:45held
36:46it
36:46for a long
36:46way
36:47round the
36:47corner
36:47to keep
36:48positive load
36:49on the nose
36:49of the car
36:50and it's very
36:50important
36:51that brake
36:51application
36:52and the way
36:53you go about
36:53that you have
36:54to be patient
36:54he did a very
36:55good job
36:55of it
36:55unlike his
36:56body language
36:56when he's
36:57driving well
36:57because you've
36:58got a sniff
36:59of being near
36:59the lead
37:00he is one
37:00of the best
37:01guys to watch
37:02he's still
37:02right there
37:03this is
37:03very close
37:04seven
37:04one hundredths
37:05of a second
37:06is the difference
37:06between James
37:07Courtney
37:08and provisional
37:09pole
37:09so it's
37:10Holden
37:10versus Ford
37:11James hasn't
37:12had pole
37:12position
37:13for more
37:14than three
37:14years
37:15Reynolds
37:16nervously
37:17watches on
37:18James
37:20Courtney
37:20crosses the
37:21line
37:21109
37:2258
37:22so it
37:23just fell
37:23away
37:24only
37:24slightly
37:25and he
37:26tucks in
37:26behind Reynolds
37:27and Davison
37:28Rob Starr
37:28talking to
37:29James
37:30there
37:30Rob
37:31one of the
37:31most experienced
37:32guys in
37:32pit lane
37:33James
37:34Mark
37:34Scaife
37:34very very
37:35good lap
37:36mate
37:36eight hundredths
37:37away
37:37from pole
37:38position
37:38very very
37:39good
37:39performance
37:40yeah mate
37:42it's a bit
37:43better than
37:43where we've
37:44been that's
37:44for sure
37:45we had a
37:46really good
37:46test the
37:46other week
37:47we weren't
37:48sure if it
37:48was going to
37:48correlate to
37:49car speed up
37:50here but
37:51you don't know
37:52how happy I
37:52am inside this
37:53helmet to
37:53actually be
37:54in the tent
37:55and fighting
37:56for it so
37:57all those
37:57Holden HRT
37:58fans we're
37:59never going to
38:00give up
38:00congratulations
38:01well done
38:02good to
38:03hear
38:03the fight
38:04in James
38:05Courtney's
38:05voice now
38:06here comes
38:06Jason Bright
38:07three times
38:07pole sitter
38:08here three
38:08time race
38:09winner here
38:10he's already
38:11got three
38:11poles for
38:12the year
38:12and two
38:12race wins
38:13he was also
38:14on the hard
38:15cut of the
38:15rev limiter
38:16at 7500
38:17revs top gear
38:18that's 266
38:19kilometres
38:19an hour at
38:20the bottom
38:20he also slides
38:21wide on that
38:22serrated curbing
38:24on the exit of
38:25turn one and a
38:25lot of flutter
38:26in the nose of
38:27that car under
38:28brakes into
38:28turn one
38:29and look at the
38:29nose of that car
38:30Neil you notice
38:31if you're looking
38:31at the front
38:31brake duct
38:32see those two
38:32silver plates
38:33Brydie has the
38:34front of his
38:35car blank right
38:36off there
38:36a lot of
38:37difference in
38:37variability in
38:38the brake
38:38blanking down
38:39here for
38:39front end
38:39grip and him
38:40more than
38:40anyone
38:41so that makes
38:41a pile of
38:42temperature but
38:43it doesn't
38:43matter because
38:43he's only doing
38:44one lap so
38:45what he's after
38:45at the moment
38:46is downforce
38:47on the front
38:47of the car
38:48and we'll see
38:49whether or not
38:49it translates
38:50he's slightly
38:51down in the
38:52first timing
38:53intermediate
38:53yeah he lost
38:55too much time
38:56in the first
38:57sector
38:57wasn't good
38:58enough in the
38:58first sector
38:59and the car
39:00doesn't look
39:00accurate enough
39:01when you when
39:01you do a lap
39:02like this
39:02they've got to
39:03be really
39:03pointy and
39:04aggressive and
39:05you can just
39:05see that it
39:05hasn't quite got
39:06the same level
39:08of front grip
39:08that a couple
39:09of the better
39:10cars
39:10Winterbottom
39:11Davison
39:12and obviously
39:13a lap from
39:15Courtney
39:15so fourth
39:18so now
39:27David
39:28Reynolds
39:28has to
39:28watch
39:29Craig
39:29Lowndes
39:30Jamie
39:30Winkup
39:30and Mark
39:31Winterbottom
39:31go in search
39:32of his
39:32provisional pole
39:33position
39:34that's next
39:34so three
39:42men left
39:42Mark
39:44Winterbottom
39:44who we're
39:44riding with
39:45right now
39:46Jamie
39:46Winkup
39:47last man
39:47out
39:48will be
39:48Craig
39:49Lowndes
39:49Mark
39:50Beretta
39:50they're
39:50going in
39:50search
39:51of
39:51Davy
39:51Reynolds
39:51time
39:52and he's
39:52very relaxed
39:52about it
39:53too Matt
39:53sitting back
39:54here
39:54who's the
39:55best chance
39:55to catch
39:55you Dave
39:56do you
39:56think
39:56probably
39:58the next
39:58three guys
39:59you know
39:59they've been
39:59pretty fast
40:00all weekend
40:01Mark's
40:01just about to
40:02start his lap
40:02so we'll see
40:03what he's got
40:03for me
40:04nice position
40:05to be in
40:05the car's
40:05obviously
40:06quick
40:06and you're
40:06in great
40:07form
40:07yeah we had
40:08a good test
40:08day last
40:09week
40:09and I think
40:10we got the
40:11most out of
40:11the car
40:11and sort of
40:12made it to
40:12suit me a
40:13bit more
40:13so yeah
40:14car's been
40:15pretty good
40:16hang in there
40:18sorry thank
40:18you
40:19a moment
40:22down to
40:22turn one
40:23for Winterbottom
40:23it was when
40:24he fed
40:24second gear
40:25into it
40:25and popped
40:26the clutch
40:27and didn't
40:27like it
40:28a little
40:28less
40:29flamboyant
40:30coming off
40:30one
40:31he's got
40:32form on the
40:33board here
40:33five podiums
40:34from the last
40:34six races
40:35two wins
40:35four poles
40:36he likes
40:38Darwin
40:38and it's been
40:39such a long
40:40time between
40:40drinks
40:41we covered it
40:41off the V8
40:42extra this
40:42morning
40:43there should
40:43have been
40:44some wins
40:44so far this
40:45year
40:45he's eighth
40:46in the championship
40:46and he's a bit
40:48frustrated that this
40:48might be the
40:49turnaround weekend
40:50the car looks
40:50good
40:51it's responded
40:51well to the test
40:52and he looks
40:53aggressive
40:53he does look
40:56aggressive
40:56the thing that I
40:57was really
40:57concerned about
40:58was the first
40:58sector time
40:59he's only
40:59sixth
41:00fastest
41:01in the
41:01first sector
41:02and he's
41:04losing time
41:05he's just
41:06under two
41:06tenths off
41:07after that
41:08little blip
41:08down at
41:09turn one
41:09and now
41:10it's drifted
41:11further
41:11I spoke to him
41:12after qualifying
41:13and said
41:13are you going
41:13to change
41:14the car
41:14he said
41:14I think
41:15I will
41:15I don't
41:15know
41:15that it's
41:16going to
41:16be good
41:16enough
41:16so looking
41:17at these
41:17numbers
41:18I'd say
41:18they did
41:19change it
41:19and possibly
41:20for the
41:20worse
41:21so fourth
41:23for Mark
41:24Winterbottom
41:25he was so
41:26relaxed when
41:27he spoke to
41:27you earlier
41:28today
41:28as you said
41:30he came off
41:30a good holiday
41:31with the family
41:32over in Fiji
41:33and he's on
41:34the line
41:35Frosty
41:36Matty White
41:36here
41:36that was a
41:37tough one
41:38especially
41:38down at
41:38turn one
41:39for you
41:39yeah mate
41:41yeah I made
41:42a few changes
41:43the track
41:45probably went
41:45off a little
41:46bit in terms
41:46of what I
41:47was chasing
41:48but I
41:49wanted a bit
41:49more turn
41:50but I think
41:50the hotter
41:51that they
41:51got
41:51the more
41:53the car
41:53turned
41:53so yeah
41:54maybe the
41:54wrong way
41:55a little
41:55bit
41:55but still
41:56okay
41:56alright mate
41:59best of luck
41:59in the 60-60
42:00currently fourth
42:02with two men
42:04to come
42:04including
42:04of course
42:05this man
42:06eight pole
42:06positions
42:06for 2013
42:07our championship
42:08leader
42:09who goes in
42:09search of his
42:10first ever pole
42:11at this circuit
42:12Jamie Winkup
42:13to illustrate
42:13the knife edge
42:14you can hear
42:15the disappointment
42:15for Mark
42:16Winterbottom
42:16he did a 9-7
42:17remember that's
42:18just two tenths
42:19away from what
42:19Reynolds did
42:20a 9-5
42:20and most of
42:21it was down
42:22there at turn
42:23one
42:23it just shows
42:23how tight
42:24it is
42:24this is Winkup
42:25turn one
42:26and he had
42:26the fastest
42:27last sector
42:28of that lap
42:28so he was
42:29coming on
42:29the car was
42:30very good
42:30but he got
42:31hurt by the
42:32first sector
42:32triple eight
42:33have never
42:34had a pole
42:34here
42:34so this will
42:35be a very
42:36big moment
42:36for both
42:37Winkup
42:37and
42:38and
42:54on this
42:55first
42:55second
42:55it may
42:55not
42:55be
42:56good
42:56enough
42:56Dave
42:57Reynolds
42:57may
42:57actually
42:58hold
42:58this
42:58as a consequence
42:59we'll get the next number for you at the top of the hill
43:0148-5 is the number
43:04a little bit of rev limited there for Winkup just as he approached 9 and 10
43:08he chipped away a little bit
43:10just a tiny bit
43:11narrow turn in
43:15good Dave
43:18look at his eyes
43:20and a little bit of rev limited in the ship from second to third there for Winkup as he tried to grab it
43:24there's still load in the car when he's searching for the gear P2
43:27one one hundredth of a second
43:30how is the
43:31good effort
43:32I'll see those tires cool in this lap
43:34currently P2
43:36scales on entry
43:37thank you
43:37Mark Dutton voice in the background talking to his man Jamie Winkup
43:40and how nervous did Davey sound before when he spoke to Barretts
43:43but slowly but surely a bit of that pressure's coming off at the moment
43:47he's going to be just as he was last year right up near the top of this field at the start of this race
43:51well Dave Reynolds just standing by at the moment
43:56a little bit of nerves
43:57you've fairly relaxed about it
43:59have you got it?
44:00I don't know we'll find out
44:01see what Lowndes he's got
44:03yeah my lap wasn't too bad but I didn't think it'd be that quick
44:06yeah it wasn't too bad at all mate
44:08we'll let you enjoy this
44:08yeah cheers thanks boys
44:09so the only man left in between David Reynolds and pole position is Craig Lowndes
44:16as you pointed out Scaifey
44:17Triple A never had pole at this circuit
44:20Lowndes has way back in 2000
44:22oh too wide
44:26way too wide
44:28so he's buried it in there very deep and it's cost him
44:31and that will pretty much be game over
44:33it'd be a miracle to dig it out from here
44:35so Davey may be off the hook
44:40yep three and a half tenths
44:41look at that he's wide again too
44:43so the car's certainly not to his liking
44:44it's not hooking up at the moment
44:46so Reynolds is going to get this done
44:48remember he's had a pole in Townsville Davey Reynolds
44:50and it looks like he's going to get the job done here as well in Darwin
44:53he likes the sunshine
44:54so Lowndes on circuit at the moment
44:57through the right-hander at seven
44:58two very big and obvious mistakes
45:01and now another one
45:02more dirt up
45:03it's a disaster lap
45:04for the Red Bull man in car triple A
45:06and finally the Bottle A team
45:08relax and celebrate
45:10now they know they've got it in the bag
45:12as they watch this lap unravel for Craig Lowndes
45:15so
45:15this is 10
45:16it will be Reynolds and Wing Cup on the front row
45:19the question is

46:28and get a result like this
46:29hey you've got it today
46:30that's great
46:30yeah I mean it's fantastic for Dave
46:32but I mean it's great to have three cars
46:33in the top ten as well
46:34so I think they're all
46:35and they've all got great race cars
46:36so that's what's even more encouraging
46:38we're just saying
46:392
46:397th straight pole
46:40for Ford on this circuit
46:41we can almost stamp a big blue oval
46:43on the middle of this hidden valley circuit
46:44yeah we want to stamp it on a few more places
46:46but let's just stand on the top step
46:47this afternoon
46:48that's the goal
46:48well done Tim
46:49thanks mate
46:50so what an effort for
46:52David Reynolds
46:53just the second pole of his career
46:54as Barrett's mentioned
46:55the first of
46:56this year
46:57so he becomes the sixth man
46:58to start from position one
47:00so
47:01Will Davison
47:02and James Courtney
47:03will start from the second row of the grid
47:05Winterbottom and Bright
47:06Rick Kelly
47:07the leading Nissan
47:08in seventh
47:09and Garth Tander
47:11with Craig Lowndes
47:12had it all in front of him
47:13and ends up starting from the rear
47:15of the top ten
47:17so the 60-60
47:18super sprint format
47:20will be unveiled
47:20for the first time
47:21at Hidden Valley
47:22for the third time
47:23in our championship
47:24later this afternoon
47:25a whole lot more racing
47:26coming your way
47:27here on Sevensport
47:28so an early payday
47:35for David Reynolds
47:35and the Bottleo Ford
47:37FPR crew
47:38here at Hidden Valley Raceway
47:40great lap
47:42first time he's had pole position
47:44at this circuit
47:45as Krompo mentioned
47:46he's got something
47:47about the heat
47:48that he likes
47:49because his only other pole
47:50came up in Townsville
47:52which is our next event
47:53so he will lead the way
47:56remember he was on the front row
47:57last year
47:58he qualified second and third
47:59for the Saturday and Sunday qualifiers
48:01so he certainly knows
48:03his way from the front
48:04at this circuit
48:05there's your top ten
48:06midfield
48:07Fabian Coulthard
48:07that's the first time
48:08that he's qualified
48:09outside the top ten
48:10all season
48:11and it breaks a good run
48:12too
48:12of top five qualifiers
48:14Michael Caruso
48:15in 15th
48:17former race winner here
48:19and Russell Engel
48:20will start from position 28
48:21in his record
48:22equaling
48:23championship starts
48:24weekend
48:25but a mixed bag
48:26for Red Bull Racing
48:27Larco's down there
48:28sorry mate
48:28can't hear you
48:29amongst the rattle guns
48:30but I want to grab a
48:30thanks buddy
48:31grab a quick
48:32you're home with
48:32Jamie Winkup
48:33Jamie
48:34first position
48:359.5
48:35second
48:369.5
48:36third
48:379.5
48:38fourth
48:389.5
48:39but you're looking
48:39for thousands
48:40yeah absolutely
48:41clearly Dave
48:43put it all on the line
48:44you know
48:45and deserve the pole
48:46well I did a good lap
48:47I just left
48:48a couple of a cent
48:49down at turn one
48:50it's very easy
48:50to run off there
48:51left a couple of a cent
48:52that's where he made
48:53his big gain on me
48:54just throwing it all on the line
48:55and as I say
48:56we're very very happy
48:57but Dave
48:58preserved the pole
48:59without doubt
48:59mate I'm really looking forward
49:00to this 60-60 format now
49:02in particular the restart
49:03I mean this is going to be
49:04different to anywhere we've been
49:05because of the length of straight
49:06what are your thoughts?
49:08you're exactly right
49:09there's a long way down to one
49:10so if there's a
49:11little bit of
49:11there's a kilometre an hour
49:12difference here
49:13there's a long way
49:14to carry that on
49:15so
49:16I've been on the receiving end
49:17of 66
49:18I've sort of
49:19I've won the first
49:20nothing races
49:22the two nothing races
49:22and I've been done in the second
49:24so my goal today
49:26is to try to maintain
49:27our position
49:27from the first run
49:29alright mate
49:29good luck today
49:30now I want to try and grab
49:31a quick word with Craig
49:32but he's bolted to the trailer
49:33for understanding
49:34he's probably not happy
49:34I'll grab a quick chat
49:35if I could with Roland Dane
49:36Roland Craig
49:37I saw him just walk out
49:38he's clearly not happy
49:39but you said you want to get him
49:40in the right frame of mind
49:41anyway for the race
49:42from fastest to tenth
49:44clearly no one's happy
49:45he won't be happy
49:47that's for sure
49:47but it looks as though
49:48he might have arrived
49:49at turn one
49:50and maybe not quite enough
49:52front tyre
49:53temperature maybe
49:55at that point
49:55I don't know
49:56I haven't asked him
49:56but and then
49:57Craig allowed
49:59the rest of the lap
50:00to get away from him
50:01he probably should have
50:02consolidated
50:03and just said
50:04oh fifth or sixth
50:05I'll take
50:06yeah and I think
50:06it's important we note that
50:07mate because I don't think
50:08you give up on Craig
50:09the car wasn't as bad
50:10as it looked
50:10the rest of the lap
50:11clearly
50:11Craig trying to recover
50:13from the mistake
50:14at the start
50:14yeah we'll just give him
50:15a bit of space now
50:16he'll you know
50:17what Craig's like
50:17he'll be in a better
50:18frame of mind
50:19by the race
50:20this afternoon
50:21and then
50:22yeah hopefully
50:23he'll give us
50:23something to talk
50:24about later on
50:24thanks for the heads up
50:25Roland
50:25no problem
50:26hey Lark
50:27it was a great result
50:28for Ford Performance Racing
50:29three of their cars
50:30in the top five
50:31on the grid
50:31and Mark Winterbottom
50:32I know you went away
50:33from Austin
50:33and that pit stop error
50:35really cost you guys
50:36and heads were down
50:37a little bit
50:38but there was a conscious
50:39effort to just regroup
50:40and bounce back
50:41and you've certainly
50:41done that today
50:42yeah
50:42you know definitely
50:44great job by the guys
50:45and good to see Dave
50:46back up there
50:46he's had a
50:47you know a bit of a
50:48struggle this year
50:49with the car
50:50so it's pretty fast
50:51in that one
50:52we couldn't get him
50:53but yeah we're
50:54trucking along
50:54we're trying to
50:55make improvements
50:56obviously the test day
50:57went well
50:57even in Fiji
50:59it went well
50:59when I was watching
51:00so they've done
51:01a great job
51:02but you know
51:03obviously tomorrow
51:04when we do the pit stops
51:05and stuff
51:05the guys have also
51:06focused hard on that
51:07so we don't have
51:08to do it today
51:09but let's hope tomorrow
51:10we've tuned that up too
51:11so yeah we're going okay
51:13Frosty I know
51:14yesterday was a good day
51:15for you Will
51:16in contrast
51:16you left here last night
51:17with your mind
51:18completely scrambled
51:19you've come back today
51:20and regrouped
51:21yeah it's the rules
51:22we've got at the moment
51:22we just don't
51:23we're trying to save costs
51:25but we just don't have
51:26enough tyres to use
51:27so it's a really
51:28interesting prospect
51:29from qualifying on
51:30how we're going to
51:31manage our tyres
51:31and that's
51:32that's going to be
51:33you know I think
51:34the people who can do
51:35that the best
51:36will get a great result
51:37but for Friday
51:38we bring our banker tyres
51:40we bring whatever
51:41we've got in our bank
51:42and I just ran on
51:44no tyres yesterday
51:45and really confusing
51:47to try and see
51:47where you're at
51:48and we were nowhere
51:48on the time sheets
51:49but Mark was quick
51:51and we had faith
51:52that once we're all
51:53on the same tyres tomorrow
51:53I reckon we'll be alright
51:54and that's what I kept
51:55telling myself
51:55and sure enough
51:56we're all competitive
51:58so yeah very relieved
51:59last night
52:00if you said I'd be third
52:01I'd be wrapped
52:02but now I see how close it is
52:04I'm not disappointed
52:05wrapped for Dave
52:06like last night
52:07he's at dinner going
52:07oh I'm too slow
52:08and he's getting stressed
52:09I gave him a bit of a pep talk
52:10and now he smoked us
52:11so anyway
52:13it's great for our guys
52:14that's the main thing
52:15because we've had to work
52:15really hard together
52:16we're all running
52:17quite different set-ups
52:18but we're just
52:18really trying to
52:19move the ship forward
52:21it's a big confidence boost
52:22Frosty isn't it?
52:23it is
52:23it is for everyone really
52:25I guess
52:25when you run four cars
52:27and all four cars
52:28need to perform
52:29and that's
52:30when you see the three
52:31in the top five
52:32it's obviously a good thing
52:33for the team
52:34so confidence in this sport
52:36is massive
52:36you can't buy it
52:37you've got to earn it
52:37we had it
52:39we threw it away
52:40and we're hopefully
52:40trying to get it back
52:41so hopefully we're good
52:43after this weekend
52:43it's great to see it back
