00:00what a great part of the world Perth in Western Australia this weekend it's the
00:06Perth 400 the latest event in the super sprint portion of the V8 supercars
00:10championship a fantastic venue of course Perth 1.7 million people on the Swan
00:15River and we are some 40 kilometers north of Perth at Barba Ghetto Raceway
00:20formerly known as Wanneroo there is the forecast for today maximum of 17
00:24possible shower two magic words we're getting ready for armor or qualifying
00:28Mark escapes alongside me let's head down to the lane though with Larko story of
00:33this weekend today's racing is going to be tire degradation and why is it so
00:37profound here at Wanneroo look over there there's sand and we're out here on the
00:40circuit and I want to show you with me a bit of chalk what that sand does when
00:44they resurface this track occasionally the binder the glue if you like the
00:47bitumen wears away from the set with the sand and what we get left with if I wipe
00:52my chalk on there look at that you can see the surface the top of all the little
00:56rocks the aggregate in there that is the surface contact with our Dunlop tire and
01:01Dunlop very cleverly have made this tire last all that torture but if you have a
01:05look can you see that graining that effect in the tire that's not a nice
01:08looking tire that is what's happening it's ripping the tire because of this
01:12and all those balls of rubber you see on the edge of the track that's the
01:15consequence so today's racing very much is going to be about who manages tire
01:20degradation best for me these are the four garages to watch today team Red Bull and
01:25the Pepsi Max racing crew over the last couple of weeks we know post Pukakoe
01:30Red Bull they haven't been in crisis but they have been concerned leave has been
01:35cancelled they've re-signed a deal with Holden and they want results yesterday
01:39they got them Jamie into third moved his championship position up to fifth and
01:43Craig Lowndes at first place yesterday holds on to second spot in the
01:47championship but they're chasing Mark Winterbottom it doesn't matter for them
01:51what happens down the rest of the lane they are battling side by side these two
01:54teams and that is going to be one of the great duels of today as the
01:58championship it's a little bit hotter a little bit tighter it was a massive day
02:03for V8 supercars yesterday once again the young gun Scott McLaughlin drove
02:07himself into the history books scoring the first race victory for Volvo in 28
02:13years of our championship obviously the first victory for Gary Rogers motorsport and
02:17Volvo Polestar racing in this current era it was a hugely emotional day for the team and the
02:23Jandall army certainly was up and about he came into this event with the best
02:27qualifying average he had three pole positions in a row and a front row start
02:31for race 15 he is the one to watch in this qualifying session heading into this
02:36afternoon's gruelling 200 kilometre race an armor all qualifying today is a little bit
02:41longer as is the race 20 minutes on the clock but Mark scape let's run through the
02:45competitors there's 25 of them some of them are happy the some of them are not
02:48really happy some of them halfway in between but they're all complaining about
02:52grip well and the grip level Mark Larkin did a great job of explaining that before
02:56in terms of what the surface looks like Nunes and the ability for the guys to
03:00engineer around what is the lowest grip level on the tour so there's Scott
03:06McLaughlin car 33 the man who did a great job yesterday Craig Lowndes did a
03:10sensational job also in the following race and Lowndes now 15 victories at this
03:16racetrack that's a great racetrack Nunes it's a place it's steeped in history
03:20it's a place we've been coming to since the 60s and some of the best racing in
03:25the Australian Touring Car Championship and in modern V8 supercar history
03:28it's only got seven turns it's only 2.4k but does it have some interest it's got
03:34rise and fall it's got low grip it's going to got one serious left-hander on the
03:40track and we break it up into these three sectors first sector is quite a complex one
03:45because it takes in turn one and the left-hander at turn four the sector two is
03:51the bottom end of the track which I'll show you in a second where that is that's
03:54Todd Kelly he runs up over the hill and when he runs over the hill it's
03:58effectively the bottom sector sector two and then from then on only the last
04:03corner is your last sector on our viewer vote you can have your say we'll miss and
04:07join the winners list today get on the V8 supercars website or vote via the seven
04:12sport app if I was getting mobile out right now scapey I'm going no they haven't shown
04:16much this weekend this is their chance though it's a longer race today we've got 20 minutes
04:20on the clock of this session so there's a little bit more of a chance for everyone to find some
04:24clear road and there's a few guys at the moment half the field still sitting by waiting to see what
04:28goes on we've had a little sprinkle of rain just before this session but they're all out there on slick tires at the moment
04:34yes they are and it's very difficult news when you go out on the circuit like that where it has got that slippery condition
04:40it's not much use throwing tires at it so you've got to be very careful to just go and get a feel for the car
04:46make sure the balance is okay and wait for the track condition to dry up we're on board now with Scott Pyle
04:51we're on board a minute ago there with Rick Kelly I spent a lot of time with Rick Kelly and his engineer Eric Panda
04:56for the last 15 or 20 minutes talking about their car and what they've done and they've actually moved
05:01their car setup much more towards Todd Kelly and Todd Kelly did a great job yesterday he was man of the
05:07match in race one and scapey to add to that surface mix while some of these guys are sitting it out
05:11remember there's a lot of other categories running around here today some even the historics that
05:15occasionally drop a little bit of oil when we don't have much rain remember that oil sits in between
05:19that that bit of aggregate that we showed when the water goes down remember oil sits on top of
05:23water comes to the surface it takes a little while to get rid of that yeah that's exactly right
05:28Larko so and a lot of times also the tire that those guys use whatever the rubber sediment is that
05:35is left in the crevices of the gaps between the aggregate tends to upset the grip level for the
05:41Dunlop tire that we use so we've got the soft tire this weekend all the teams only had seven sets
05:48so because they use two sets each in the two races yesterday race 14 and 15 it'll break lock up
05:55there for the left front for Will Davison almost went off the road because they use two sets and
06:01across the grass and in he goes they use two sets in each of the races they've effectively got three
06:07sets remaining for today's longer race and this longer qualifying session and remember too on Friday
06:12they had another set they had to give back that they can't carry through the rest of the weekend so the
06:16question was on Friday do you just burn around on the one set that you're going to give back because
06:20they're done you can't do anything more with them so it all plays out over the course of the weekend
06:24fastest time at the moment is this man David Reynolds bottle of Ford who was a solid top 10 runner but he
06:29was right at the end of the team yesterday had a 10.9 clear that FPR have got fast cars
06:35Winterbottom and Chas Mostard are proving it this car is from the same workshop run under the Rod
06:40Rod Nash racing banner and these are the Walkinshaw racing cars you can see where there's been a
06:44little bit of rain just before this session on the concrete in the lane
06:50Reynolds improves 55.84 is the new benchmark yesterday we had a 55.29 from Lowndes for pole in
06:56one race McLaughlin a 55.46 in the other so you can see there that dry line that they're all sticking to
07:03Armoural qualifying is underway there's just over 14 minutes to go plenty of time for someone to grab pole
07:15Armoural qualifying continuing at Barbagato and the championship leader has staked his claim Mark Winterbottom
07:21jumps to the top at the number five Pepsi Max FPR Ford 55.49 and it's good news if you're a Blue Oval fan
07:29his teammate Chas Mostard now P2 but James Courtney here fastest to the first sector green box indicates
07:35the number 22 HRT Commodore is on target here we haven't seen much from the Walkinshaw racing cars this weekend
07:42but a longer race today it's a new day and Courtney's up for the second sector
07:47this is going to be a pretty good lap as long as he can get a stop down here just check whether he makes the Apex
07:51made the Apex very nicely very nicely use the berm use the curve on the exit very nicely too
07:57Courtney to the top with a 40 with a 55.42 so a 4.2 plays a 4.9 so seven hundredths of a second
08:05great block there and Rick gone needs to get to the grass he does escapes
08:10the front went off at one through the stand
08:14makes our commentary life easy when the drivers do it for us
08:17exactly
08:18here's Winkup the reigning champ managed to fight back yesterday he's on target too
08:22jump to the top here 11 minutes to go he goes front row 55.43.0020 away
08:30from the time of James Courtney remember that today is a longer race 200 kilometers 83 laps
08:35this session's longer too 20 minutes for all the drivers to play with yesterday it was just a pair of 10 minute sessions
08:42and Tim Slade he's had a run off the road in the super cheap auto Commodore
08:48but he's starting to arrive on the scene as well so while control racing looking a little stronger today
08:52yeah the cars do look a bit more responsive at the front especially
08:55so Courtney 55.42 Winkup 55.43 Winnabottom 55.49 so all those guys three guys separated by
09:05six and a half hundredths of a second let's have a look what this does for Slade
09:09Slade currently 8th 55.78 so 55.75 previously and it looks like they're only getting one lap
09:19so you've got to be very conscious of getting the front tyre up and making sure that the phasing of this is as good as it can be
09:27James Courtney speed is much better stay with us
09:31it's a very interesting qualifying session because we've got all the heavy weights at the top
09:35but Scott McLaughlin yet to have a proper run
09:43it's not very often that you get the track to yourself but that's what Fabian Coulton has
09:47after all qualifying you haven't missed much at all because the field has been in the lane
09:51plotting and planning their last run on their last set of tyres
09:54and the Kiwi jumps to fourth so he's only five hundredths away and he's fourth
10:00that's right that shows how close it is but it's also going to get very frenetic based on four minutes to go
10:07yeah and as I'm about to depart I was just going to show you I don't know if you can see through Craig Lounge's cockpit here
10:11see on his steering wheel the little map there now that's not because Craig doesn't know the way around here
10:15see how there's yellow and there's white they're little sectors that'll be pre-identified with his engineer Jeremy Moore
10:20so when he comes in and talks about them he can straight away dive in and say this is the area we need to fix
10:25because you never try and fix a race car over a whole lap that's very hard to do to do you try and identify the priority areas
10:32he can zone straight in on those and go whack turn four sector three whatever it is bang they can focus on that area
10:38that's a great point Larka we talk about sectors we divide the track up mark into timing purposes for three sectors
10:45but the teams call them micro sectors they divide them up even more to nine ten eleven depending on what they're trying to find in all these places
10:54so they're looking even more closer under the microscope than we are
10:57and also breaking each of the corners down so we used to break each of the corners down into five segments basically
11:03so right through from the turning point the entry breaking right to the exit
11:08so once you've actually broken the corner down and you've broken the lap down
11:12there's probably twenty markers that the lap time is continually updated on your dash
11:19so a bit of drama there for fabian given that he's already done a lap
11:24he's the only guy that was out on the circuit and obviously everybody's now come out going slowly
11:29it's matt braid oliver pegan from volvo very happy guys from yesterday with the first win for 28 years
11:36for volvo and polestar and at the moment their driver scott mclaughlin currently sits at the top with a 55 37
11:46as i said things are going to change two and a half minutes to go
11:49mclaughlin courtney winkup caulthard lounge winterbottom reynolds
11:53most at davison and wall as david couchy head engineer for jamie winkup
11:59who struggled to pace the whole weekend qualified yesterday
12:03finally in a reasonable position on the second row and got a podium out of it
12:08he was 17th in the previous race he was nowhere
12:14this is on board with winkup on the right hand side you can see the gear indicator on the dash
12:20you can see his hands moving you can see now
12:24five hundredths of a second away from mclaughlin
12:27winkup got a break on he's got a turn he only just made the apex then
12:33very committed
12:35you'll get another marker in a second as soon as you top the rise
12:38you get your second marker
12:39it's only one hundredth away through this traffic
12:42this will hurt him
12:43this will be the end
12:44oh that's the end
12:45oh that's the end
12:46just right in the way
12:47right in the way
12:48right at the apex of the corner
12:49he will be penalized for that for sure
12:51and we've seen that this year where drivers have been penalized good positions
12:54that just can't be done that is just in professional motor racing that just cannot be done
13:07you drive down the straight you see the car coming for an hour
13:10and you see and you honestly you cannot accept that level of behaviour
13:15when blokes are trying to win championships and race meetings
13:19Todd Kelly here is on target to jump into the top ten
13:23we've seen that happen this year
13:24drivers penalized grid positions for impeding other drivers in qualifying
13:30there's David Wall eighth
13:32nice job
13:34Jason Bright on target
13:36this could be front row at that sort of a split
13:41so we come fourth
13:44with a 55-4-3
13:47Bright seventh
13:48much better than that Bright seventh
13:50good job
13:51McLaughlin now
13:52on the fastest first sector
13:54we're on board with Mark Winterbottom also at the final corner
13:57let's see what this does for him
13:58this will pop him up
13:59front row
14:00front row good job
14:0155-2-4
14:02and Mostert's gone to fourth
14:04so the two Pepsi cars are in court
14:05he was at the top
14:06earlier on in the session
14:07he's been bumped to fifth
14:09that's where he stays
14:10he went faster that time
14:11but not fast enough to move
14:13checkered flag is out
14:15he right now
14:17check this check this
14:18here's McLaughlin
14:19nope
14:20no
14:2155-4-2
14:22he's five hundredths away from
14:24his best
14:25he's third
14:26so Lowndes
14:27is in the pits and watching to see if anyone else
14:29can bump him
14:30I don't think there is anyone out there
14:32Darwin goes to eighth
14:33both the Volvo's in the ten
14:35that's great
14:36that's a very good job Robert Darwin
14:37that's the best
14:38we've seen him in terms of genuine competitiveness
14:41he was fast here on Friday
14:43that's a good job
14:44you can see it's still wet
14:45on the line down the hill
14:47Fabian now
14:48final corner
14:49let's just see what that does
14:50it's not going to be quite good enough
14:52in fact he doesn't
14:54he doesn't improve
14:5555-6-3
14:56that's the end of that
14:59Lansy congratulations
15:00great weekend
15:01you've bounced back this weekend
15:02you guys haven't you?
15:03well we have
15:04I think that's
15:05Jamie had a problem there in qualifying
15:06I think he got caught up in some back markers
15:07so I know he's got more speed in the car
15:09but for us it's been fantastic
15:10you're right Barrett
15:11to bounce back after two bad weekends
15:13is not too bad
15:14have two poles around this place
15:15is pretty special
15:16and knowing that we got
15:1783 or 200 kilometres to come this afternoon
15:20the way the weather is
15:21it's going to be quite challenging
15:22Lansy how much of an advantage is pole here?
15:24oh I think qualifying being on the front
15:26couple of roads
15:27I think is massively important
15:28same like Winton
15:29a few other places
15:30Tasmania
15:31but especially around here
15:32the way it is
15:33and I think you know
15:34we've got some good tyre life now
15:35we managed to obviously fix that yesterday
15:37really looking forward to this afternoon's race
15:39we'll see you in the same boat
15:40thanks Nunes
15:41thanks Barrett
15:43so less than seven hundredths of a second
15:45seven tenths of a second
15:47sorry Nunes
15:48separates the whole field
15:4955-2-2 to 55-9-2
15:52and Lowndes has taken the 35th pole of his career
15:55the Erebus Mercedes were both on the fringe of the ten
15:57they nearly made it in there again
15:59Rick Kelly
16:00best of the Nissans
16:01but he's back there in 16th
16:02it's a tough weekend
16:03Caruso, Moffat and Perkins
16:05are down the back
16:06less than seven hundreds
16:07it's amazing
16:08in terms of space
16:09Armoural qualifying's done
16:10set for a big afternoon
16:12at the Perth 400
16:13and it's another fantastic Armoural pole position for Craig Lowndes
16:24nice performance
16:25Red Bull Racing Australia
16:26Holden car number 888
16:27he's second of the weekend
16:29an outstanding performance
16:31he's third of 2014
16:33Craig Lowndes grabs $1,000 courtesy of Armoural
16:37here's Larko
16:38sorry to interrupt
16:40sorry to interrupt
16:42there's Ludo Lacroix
16:43he's here this weekend
16:44running away
16:45one of the smartest guys in motorsport
16:46and you know it mate
16:47hey we're with you there pal
16:48that was tough
16:49I think Bargs has got to come down
16:51as our prosecuting officer
16:52pretty hard on what we just saw there mate
16:54that cost you dearly
16:55yeah I was on a good lap there
16:57I think it was P2 or so
16:59yeah fortunate
17:01I think it was Dale Wood
17:02I think he was here
17:03he's out there doing his best
17:04trying to get a lap in as well
17:05but we've got
17:07everyone's got responsibility
17:08to look after everyone else
17:09so yeah that's the way it goes
17:11alright mate
17:12well taken
17:13cheers Dave
17:14Dale Wood we know how difficult
17:15it is in qualifying
17:16to get track positioning
17:17get those clear laps in
17:18at the end of that session
17:20it was obvious that Jamie Winkup
17:21was on a hot lap
17:22did you see him at all?
17:23no I didn't
17:24no
17:25if I saw him I would have
17:26let him through
17:27I haven't had a chance
17:28I've just got out of the car
17:29so I'm going to go down and see him
17:30and apologise
17:31because not at all what I wanted to do
17:33so no I didn't see him
17:34thanks Dale
17:35Jamie Winkup and Dale Wood
17:37incident
17:3890 seconds remaining
17:39in that qualifying session
17:40and as Jamie was on a hot lap
17:42with the headlights on
17:43which is an indication
17:44that he needs some track space
17:45here he is again in replay
17:47he finds Dale
17:48right at the turn in point
17:49and the apex of turn 7
17:50destroys the lap
17:52very frustrating for Winkup
17:53and you can see what they
17:55well the way in which they reacted
17:57inside the Red Bull Racing Garage
17:58they were not happy about that at all
18:00the look on their faces
18:01so Dale as he promised
18:02went down and apologised to Jamie
18:04it's all very gentlemanly
18:06took it in their stride
18:08remains to be seen as to whether
18:10or not race control has a view
