00:00We're only eight races into the V8 supercar season and already the rivalries are as hostile
00:12and intense as they've ever been.
00:14Already push and shove.
00:15Can't stop it, Jamie Winkup.
00:17Straight into the wall and huge damage.
00:19Winkup on the inside for Godwin.
00:21Over and over and up and into the wall.
00:25Winkup makes contact with Michael Caruso.
00:27It's contact.
00:28The team mates make contact.
00:31Awful situation there.
00:32While Red Bull Racing Australia have so far managed to climb their way to the top,
00:37the rest of the field is putting up one hell of a fight.
00:40Oh, it's Scott McLaughlin puts one on the champ.
00:46And the rivalry between the Holland Racing Team and Red Bull Racing Australia is on.
00:54Courtney gets the win.
00:56Woo-hoo!
00:58Today, we return to Winton in Victoria, where last year it all came crashing down for the defending champ.
01:05Oh, problem for Winkup.
01:06Winkup out of the race.
01:07Big crash.
01:08Evolving car number one.
01:10And like a bunch of savages, they all lined up to pounce.
01:13And Moffat takes the advantage.
01:16Not once.
01:16James Moffat gets his first win in the V8 Supercar Championship.
01:21Not twice.
01:22Winnerbottom finally on the winner's list at Winton.
01:25But three times.
01:26That's a great victory for James Courtney.
01:28And you can bet they'll all be lining up again today.
01:32Welcome to the Winton 400 as the super sprint season continues.
01:36The V8 Supercars, only on 7.
01:40It's an amazing championship.
01:44What a weekend it's been already.
01:46Over the last couple of decades, Winton Motor Raceway has seen the lot.
01:49Well, yesterday, our drivers came out swinging.
01:52There were crashes and controversies.
01:54The superstars struggled.
01:55The underdogs had success.
01:57And Erebus Motorsport drove into the history books with Mercedes-Benz.
02:02Hi, everyone.
02:03I'm Matt White.
02:03And welcome to the V8s on 7.
02:05The championship where anything can happen.
02:07And yesterday, everything did.
02:10And today, it's a longer one.
02:11200 kilometres, 67 laps, but importantly, 150 championship points to gain.
02:17Alongside me, as always, the best in the business.
02:19Mark Scaife and Neil Crompton.
02:21Afternoon, boys.
02:22Well, I guess it's fair to say there is nothing straightforward about the super sprint format.
02:26Right about that, Matty.
02:27Delivered an explosive couple of races yesterday.
02:30And I thought we saw some incredible stuff.
02:32Fabian Coulthard, impressive Scaifey with consistency.
02:35Doing a nice job in the championship this year.
02:37I felt for Scotty McLaughlin and Volvo.
02:40Those guys really had victory within their grasp based on their pace.
02:43But how about the performance for Erebus Motorsport and Lee Holdsworth?
02:47After 18 months of incredible gut-busting hard work to get that victory was important and fantastic to see.
02:52And Crompton, it was genuine car pace, wasn't it?
02:54One of the things that's really important in this sport is real car speed.
02:58And Lee Holdsworth was very, very fast.
03:01Fastest lap of the race with a 23.16.
03:03McLaughlin, as you said, unfortunate to be out of the lead and in the pits with a 23.16.
03:08And Fabian Coulthard with a 23.19.
03:11But importantly, Wincup 24.12 was his fastest lap.
03:15One second slower.
03:17So let's have a look at the highlights because it was an extraordinary start for Fabian Coulthard.
03:22Did a great job all day, as Neil said.
03:24He was the fastest guy from pole position and a great battle for Dan Gisbergen down into the first corner.
03:31Look at this run, which was unfortunate for Robert Dahlgren.
03:35He was out of the race very early.
03:36But a really good battle with Holdsworth and Caruso.
03:39And McLaughlin in the pits.
03:42Contact here with Courtney and Caruso.
03:44That was down at Turn 7.
03:46And again, there was a massive head gasket problem.
03:49And engine reliability still new in this S60 program.
03:53Russell Ingle come in.
03:54He took the chance to put some tyres on top.
03:56Oh, and didn't he come through the field after the safety car?
03:59He had paste to burn.
04:00It was amazing.
04:01And that safety car, once it came out, boy, there was some stuff going on.
04:04This is Chas Mostert down the inside of the dirt at Turn 1.
04:07Watch what happens here at 2.
04:09It's hard to unravel who did what to who.
04:10But the net result, a lot of scattered V8 supercars.
04:13And look at the damage on the front of Courtney's car there.
04:16There was slayed out of that.
04:17There was damage everywhere.
04:18And this was a big one.
04:20Nick Percat up the inside of David Reynolds.
04:22That's very fast, Neil.
04:24It's about 180 kilometres an hour when they make contact.
04:27And this is Courtney in the pit.
04:28Slayed in the pit.
04:30Percat in the pit.
04:31So three of the four cars from Walkinshaw.
04:33And this was the controversial one from Russell Ingle.
04:35Coming through the field.
04:36Was going to get onto the podium.
04:38And makes contact with Scott Pye.
04:40This was also controversial because this is the drive-through for Ingle.
04:44Which we'll talk about later.
04:45But also controversy with Rick Kelly being spun by his team mate James Moffat.
04:50So in the end it was Fabian Coulthard who grabbed the win.
04:53Then race number eight.
04:54We did it all again for another 100 kilometres scathing.
04:57And it was on, wasn't it?
04:58This was really good.
05:00The start that Scott McLaughlin made.
05:03And the speed and performance was really, really good.
05:06But he had an engine change between races.
05:09He had an alternator failure.
05:11Overheating alternator.
05:12And a battery voltage problem which brought him in.
05:14The battle at the front of the field was really intense.
05:17So was the battle through the field, Krompo.
05:20Yeah, look at this.
05:21We were talking about positions AD, 90, 20.
05:23Beyond Garth Tander getting boxed.
05:25I spoke to him this morning.
05:26The rear tyres were just frying on that car.
05:28There was a lot of stuff going on up at turn seven.
05:31That was James Moffat and Shane Van Gisbergen.
05:33And Shane did his very best to try and hang on to a car that was oversteering.
05:37Hurting its rear tyres.
05:38Sliding a lot.
05:39Look at this.
05:39Full drift action into turn seven.
05:42And the Kiwi did it in style there.
05:43But that was indicative of the problems that he had.
05:45But this is the pass for the lead.
05:47No, it's not.
05:48We called.
05:48It may happen down there at turn three.
05:50Dave Stewart, Betty Clemenco, everybody at Erebus Motorsport.
05:53They held their breath.
05:55So he has another crack.
05:56Lines up for another one down here at three.
05:58And now he makes it stick.
06:00And that was a big moment for them.
06:02And we were thrilled.
06:03And so were they.
06:05Look at the reaction.
06:05The reaction is just fantastic.
06:06I thought he was going off at this corner.
06:08This was the first lap after he got to the lead.
06:11But it was a really great drive by Lee Holdsworth.
06:14Very professional performance from him yesterday.
06:16Yeah.
06:17So emotional.
06:17We've now had five different winners in eight races.
06:21Here's Erebus Motorsport.
06:22Mercedes on top of the podium.
06:24So the championship is close as well.
06:26Craig Lowndes leads by 19 points over Fabian Coulthard, who goes up to second.
06:30Wing Cup is third.
06:32Mark Winterbottom didn't qualify too well yesterday.
06:34But, gee, race well.
06:35He's in fourth.
06:36And both Erebus drivers of Holdsworth and Will Davison inside the top ten.
06:41So after all of that, plenty of talking points.
06:44As always, our pit lane reporters have it covered.
06:46Mark Larkham, Greg Murphy, Rihanna Crayon doing the job this weekend.
06:50Let's start with you, Larko, at the Enforcer's Garage.
06:52Yeah.
06:53And let me assure you, Matty, there is no shortage of passion down in this garage today.
06:57So the boys just spoke about it.
06:58We saw a great strategy option from the Enforcer yesterday.
07:02And he blazed on through the pack on new tyres.
07:05And we love him when he's like that because he's quite assertive, quite aggressive.
07:09Yesterday, did he overstep the mark?
07:11Well, I guess that's the conjecture.
07:13I interviewed him after the race.
07:15Really sad he missed out on a podium position.
07:17He back-slammed the officials quite hard.
07:20Arguably too hard.
07:21And today, there's some conjecture about what the penalty will be, if there'll be a penalty.
07:26So we're going to have to watch that very, very closely.
07:27In fact, I'm going to grab Jason Barguana, the Category Driving Standards Officer or Observer,
07:32who's very much weighed into the argument.
07:34We'll see if we can talk to him after qualifying.
07:36Stand by.
07:38It was such a memorable day for Erebus Motorsport and V8 Supercars yesterday.
07:43Lee Holdsworth took his very first V8 Supercar win driving a Mercedes.
07:47Now, you have to go all the way back to 1961.
07:51That was the Armstrong 500 where Mercedes last took a significant race win in an Australian touring car race.
07:58That time, it was Harry Firth and Bob Jane behind the wheel.
08:01But this weekend, it's all about Lee Holdsworth, Erebus Motorsport and, of course, the fan favourite team owner, Betty Klemenko.
08:08I've never heard or seen fans cheering on Turn 2 Hill for a team owner like they were yesterday.
08:15It was such a brilliant thing for V8 Supercars.
08:18The words soul-searching aren't exactly the words we'd usually use to describe red ball racing.
08:23But looking in this garage yesterday afternoon, that's exactly what the faces on all the crew looked like they were doing.
08:29But today is a brand new day.
08:31And as we know, things change very quickly in V8 Supercars.
08:34And these guys are experts at turning things around and shifting it from disaster to winning in a very short period of time.
08:41Absolutely, Murph. There are stories to tell everywhere up and down pit lane.
08:46The great thing is we're doing it all again today, but longer.
08:49So, one qualifying session still to come. That's after the break.
08:53And then the final race of the weekend.
08:55200 kilometres this one.
08:57It will be a strategy game.
08:59As Rhianna mentioned, it was a breakthrough win yesterday for these guys at Erebus.
09:03So, what do you think, folks?
09:05Can Betty and the Benz do it again today?
09:07Hey, that's our viewer vote to kick us off via supercars.com.au slash vote.
09:11Or you can vote via your 7 Sport app.
09:13Show your support for Erebus Motorsport if you're in their garage.
09:16And from that garage, let's go for a hot lap with car number nine and Will Davison.
09:22All right, g'day, everyone. Will Davison here.
09:24Welcome aboard the number nine Erebus Motorsport P63.
09:29We're at Winter Motor Raceway.
09:31Come join me for a hot lap at a circuit, my old boss Dick Johnson said.
09:35It's a bit like running a marathon around a clothesline.
09:38So, let's go.
09:39Hard on the throttle onto the straight.
09:42One of the only circuits.
09:44We don't actually use sixth gear.
09:47As you can see, just got the rev limiter in fit.
09:50Let's use a bit of curb through one.
09:51Yep, like that.
09:53Hard on the gas out of turn two.
09:54Use all the road.
09:56Up into turn three at about 80 metre board.
09:59Get right into the camber at turn three.
10:01Nice and smooth.
10:02The road narrows into turn four.
10:06Hard on the gas up to the sweeper.
10:08Really technical.
10:10Tricky.
10:11Tricky part of the track.
10:12Just got the rev limiter into there, which is always a good sign.
10:15Really balancing the car on the throttle.
10:18Throw it up over the curb.
10:20Into a great passing opportunity into turn seven.
10:23They call this tight, technical little section the cleavage.
10:26Probably why we've come so fast through here.
10:30It's turn eight.
10:31Into turn nine.
10:33Actually always got to be smooth to be fast through here.
10:36Get hard on the gas.
10:37Up onto the exit curb like a berm.
10:42Into turn ten.
10:44Very smooth.
10:45Get the nose in.
10:46Really focus on getting traction.
10:48Not a bad run.
10:50Not much time around this track like Simmons Plains.
10:53Certainly no time to be doing my hair in the mirror like James Courtney did in Tassie.
10:57So very busy little track.
11:00Finish the lap.
11:02Try and get on the gas.
11:04Third gear.
11:05Fourth gear.
11:06Going to be doing plenty more laps around here this weekend.
11:09So I hope it's a good one.
11:10Thanks for joining me.
11:11Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:12Bye.
11:14Bye.
11:14Bye.
11:16Welcome back.
11:22Perfect conditions.
11:23Absolutely beautiful here at Winton.
11:26So we're a couple of hours northeast of Melbourne up the Hume and we're getting ready
11:29for qualifying a 20 minute session.
11:32Yesterday it was fabulous Fabian.
11:35Fabian Coulthard two out of two poles.
11:37With more on that is Rihanna.
11:38Yeah Maddie if you said to Fabian earlier this week he'd be doing one minute 19s around
11:43this Winton Raceway.
11:44He admits he would have laughed at you BJR had all three cars in the top six spots for
11:49race seven yesterday and Dale Wood got his career best qualifying of third on the grid.
11:53They then went on to take three out of the six podium positions on offer yesterday.
11:58BJR are looking the goods coming into this red hot 20 minute quality session.
12:03Right behind me Rihanna these two Volvos Scotty McLaughlin and Robert Dahlgren both in good
12:08shape again today.
12:09We saw a really unique circumstance yesterday race eight it was where Scotty McLaughlin leading
12:15the race comfortably doing really well looking like a winner was dragged in.
12:19His voltage was dropping.
12:20They knew what was going to happen.
12:21They knew the car would have stopped on the track.
12:23A brave decision.
12:24They dragged him in.
12:25Gave it a new battery and set him out and recovered a few points.
12:28Hard call but the right call.
12:30They're back in the game today.
12:31Yeah guys I wouldn't say that WR had the best day yesterday.
12:36It was pretty miserable.
12:37Three cars at one stage were looking like being out of the race.
12:41But remember at this event last year Car 22 was on pole and he won the Sunday's race.
12:47It's not over yet.
12:48We've got qualifying coming up and these guys have done a lot of work overnight.
12:53Yeah thanks Murph and a big g'day to Mark Beretta who is on the final day of his Tour de Cure
12:58ride 136 k's into Hobart today.
13:01Well done Beretta and we'll see you back here for the next event.
13:04So these are our players today.
13:06Our 25 drivers headed by Jamie Winkup of course.
13:09Look out for Mark Winterbottom this afternoon.
13:11He was electrifying yesterday but didn't qualify too well.
13:15Will Davison ninth.
13:16Car number nine.
13:17He's inside the top ten in the championship.
13:19Fabian as we mentioned is having a ripper weekend.
13:22David Waugh career best performance yesterday to finish inside the top five for Wilson Security
13:27Racing.
13:28Spoke to Stevie Johnson on the way into the circuit today and he said we asked David to
13:32manage his tyres early in that race.
13:34He showed the maturity and the patience to do so and then they let him loose.
13:38Can Volvo have a better day today?
13:40They had a shocker yesterday with gremlins all around.
13:43Shane Van Gisbergen look out for him and Craig Lowndes.
13:46Car Triple Eight Red Bull Racing Australia.
13:49They're on a rescue mission and this is our playing field, our arena for this afternoon.
13:55It's Winton Motor Raceway.
13:56The nation's action track it's called.
13:58Australian Touring Car Championship first rolled out of here in 1985 and ever since it's
14:03been the test track for 18 out of the 25 cars on the grid.
14:08So thousands upon thousands of kilometres have been done around here and some wonderful
14:12races.
14:14So 119.653 is the qualifying record and as Rihanna mentioned if you said that to any
14:19body along pit lane they would have laughed in your face but yesterday there was so much
14:23grip.
14:23Three sectors and of course the critical one sector two around turns six, seven, eight,
14:29nine and on to that back straight from turns 10 to 11.
14:34So what has Fabian got up his sleeve today?
14:37He showed a lot of maturity too yesterday in the back stages of race eight to back it off
14:41knowing that he was driving a rocket ship but he still backed it off.
14:45Instead of playing the risky play he ends up with another podium.
14:50So a first and a third lap record along the way and second in the championship.
14:54Exactly Matt.
14:54I actually just said to Fabian that that was a really mature drive and it's those sorts
15:01of drives that keep you in the championship hunt.
15:03He could have had a drama with Holdsworth.
15:04He actually led him by in the end of turn three and he pressed on to finish second.
15:09So it was a very mature run but very good speed.
15:12Look for the sectors.
15:13So yesterday when Fabian was the fastest guy, the fastest for the first sector was actually
15:19Scott McLaughlin.
15:20Then the next two sectors, Fabian Coulthard was the fastest car.
15:24This guy, we said it before, he really struggled.
15:28For speed he was one second a lap.
15:31He was slower than the lead cars.
15:34And Neil, you've done a huge amount of laps around here.
15:36So have I.
15:37It's one of the places.
15:39There he is almost off there at turn 10.
15:41One of the places that you can grind a groove into place but you still never really understand
15:45it.
15:45It's got a complex track, isn't it?
15:46And it has its own personality.
15:48And when we say that, what we mean is that at different times of the day and different times
15:53of the year, you'll get a completely different read from your car and sometimes touch absolutely
15:59nothing.
15:59So the track read here is hard.
16:01Now understand that we had a little bit of rain on Friday so they didn't get a clean
16:06shot at it on Friday.
16:08And then this question mark of the additional grip that was available really scattered the
16:13field yesterday.
16:13But the speed that we saw was absolutely spectacular.
16:17There were drivers out there doing handstands when they saw the numbers.
16:20Here's Shane Van Gisbergen, 22.6 at the top of the tree so far.
16:23But the interesting thing for me today, Mark, will be that the track, I believe, will change
16:28substantially again.
16:29It's an all blue sky.
16:30A lot of UV on the road.
16:32The temperature is up.
16:33And that resin material that we've spoken a lot about this weekend will come off the
16:37track.
16:38It'll return to something of the old winter that we know and love.
16:41No doubt.
16:41And when that happens, the ability for you to read the condition and set the car for that
16:46is very hard.
16:46Weren't they great scenes yesterday afternoon when Betty Klemenko was up there?
16:50She was so humbled by the reaction to the fans.
16:52They were chanting her name when she got up on the podium with Lee.
16:56And everybody was happy for Lee as well because everybody, regardless of how competitive they
17:01are, they know that it's a tough battle to start from scratch and play in the main game.
17:05And that was a project that had very little ramp time.
17:08So when they pulled that together for the beginning of last year, they pulled it together
17:12in 120 odd days.
17:14And I went down there this morning, just now that things have settled down, had a word
17:17to Dave Stewart, had a word to Ross Stone, had a word to Will.
17:21I was in a conversation with Lee last night.
17:23And just the human story is a huge one.
17:26Here's another one because yesterday, as Mark Larkham detailed earlier and you earlier
17:30in the program as well, Matty, Russell Ingle was in the wars up at that northeastern end
17:35of the racetrack yesterday.
17:37He's got a good car repair management Australia.
17:41Lucas Dumbrell car.
17:42This is a great car.
17:43It's a triple eight built machine.
17:45Russell's been driving it well.
17:46He was on for a podium, believe it or not, with some clever strategy play yesterday.
17:49And he got caught up in traffic, made a mistake, got a pit lane drive-through penalty
17:53for his trouble.
17:55Hey guys, just got some information through from Erebus and from their engineers there.
18:00And they said yesterday was the highest ever G loading that they've ever seen.
18:042.3 Gs through the sweeper yesterday.
18:06That's amazing in a V8 supercar.
18:08And we let a few Gs go in here too, Murph, when we saw guys flying off the road everywhere.
18:12There was so much going on around the racetrack.
18:15One of the things about this place, it's a little bit like last weekend, Scafie and Tassie.
18:19It never fails to deliver an energised race.
18:23There was a lot of gene going on.
18:24There certainly was.
18:25We saw some mad stuff, especially after the restart.
18:27It was quite a contained start.
18:29But after the restart, it was on.
18:31Van Gisberger currently fasts with a 22.22.
18:34Just spoke to Steve Hallam from Techno Autosport.
18:38He was basically saying that they couldn't work out what had gone on with the car and that the front roll bar had moved to a full soft setting.
18:46So when we saw that oversteer, Shane Van Gisberger, and big sideways moments in the race, it was because the front anti-roll bar had gone soft.
18:55And we had a situation, was it a week earlier, where, or in Melbourne, I can't remember now, but they had a broken anti-roll bar on that car as well.
19:02They've had a few problems.
19:03I thought he did a mighty job with Scotty Pye at the top now to hold on to it for as long as he did, but you knew he was stressed.
19:10So it's the sister entry to the one that we're watching.
19:13The Wilson security car number 16 leads the way of Scotty Pye.
19:16David Wall is looking good as well.
19:18So the opening salvos have been five in qualifying here at Winton.
19:25Welcome back to Armour All qualifying here at the Winton 400.
19:29And you're riding with Scott McLaughlin, car 33.
19:32Remember, they had engine dramas and then battery dramas yesterday.
19:36But right now, McLaughlin leads the list for the Volvo S60 out of Gary Rogers Motorsport.
19:41So 121.573 is the time to beat.
19:45Mark Witterbottom second.
19:46James Courtney.
19:47This man, Craig Lowndes, is fourth.
19:49And it's Rick Kelly, the best of the Nissans.
19:52Davey Reynolds.
19:53Jamie Winkup.
19:54Tim Slade.
19:55Jason Bright and Chas Mostyn.
19:57About halfway through this 20-minute qualifying session.
20:02Lowndes goes up to third.
20:06And he qualified fourth yesterday for race seven.
20:09So his qualifying performance was probably a little better.
20:13And he slipped back to April 9th as the race went on.
20:16So his rear tyre performance, you said actually his rear tyres were worn out.
20:18So it looks like they've got a little bit of a handle on making it do one lap.
20:24But making it do the course of these races.
20:26And today, double the length.
20:28Still a big test for Red Bull Racing.
20:29Hit this lap, J. Dub.
20:31Currently nine and a half minutes to go in the session.
20:34In P8.
20:35McLaughlin has been on the radio talking with Richard Holway as well about how they find
20:41a bit of pace.
20:4221.5 is the marker at the moment.
20:44The fastest.
20:45Although this number up on screen that Fabian Coulthard's achieved so far may threaten that.
20:50They're going to make a little ride height adjustment on McLaughlin's car.
20:54And then after they've done that, they'll tune it with the anti-roll bar.
20:56So they're just making little fine-tuning adjustments on that car in search of performance.
21:02Rev limiter and turn 10 hit.
21:05Call it off.
21:06Get this lap.
21:07For Phil Keat.
21:08So Phil Keat on the radio bringing Fabian in.
21:11Make the corner.
21:13Mate, copy that.
21:14Did you say on the way to the corner?
21:17Out of the corner.
21:18Leaving the corner.
21:20Very bright engineer, Phil Keat.
21:22Red Bull.
21:23And Richard Holway, who looks after Scott McLaughlin, was saying earlier this morning
21:29to me that this man here on screen, Phil Keat, he said he loves it in those high-grip conditions.
21:35He used to be engineer with Jason Bright for many years.
21:37And he knows how to work it.
21:39And he did it yesterday for Fabian Coulthard.
21:41It's a good story.
21:42OK, get ready for a final mad dash in the Armour All-Qualifying Session here for Race 9 of the Championship.
21:54And they're all chasing this man, Scott McLaughlin.
21:58Leads the way with a 1.21.57.
22:01It's been almost three decades since Volvo's had pole position in the Australian Touring Car Championship.
22:07You have to go back to 1986, John Bauer at Wanneroo.
22:11Can McLaughlin deliver today?
22:12And we just intercepted a radio message then from Richard Holway to Scott McLaughlin
22:18that if it's too sharp, we can have a bit of a fiddle with the bars and help you.
22:21So I know that what they've done then is played with the ride height and rake in the car to make it turn better.
22:27So it's always the thing they chase in quality.
22:29Jack Perkins on screen at the moment.
22:31And they'll try and see whether they can get away with that extra turn in car 33.
22:35The jilt went forward.
22:36Just couldn't get it together in qualifying yesterday, Jack.
22:38But he did race better than he qualified.
22:40So a 16th and a 14th out of qualifying positions down in the 20s.
22:46Can't miss the jilt went Falcon.
22:49Let's hope that Jack gets into the groove and puts down a good time today
22:53because he's good fun to watch when he's in the middle of a battle.
22:56He's a great character, Jack.
22:58He's been effectively in this paddock and part of this racing community for his entire life.
23:03Very, very good race driver.
23:07A win here in the Dunlop Series last year for him.
23:10A lot of V8 miles and great to see him back in a full-time ride.
23:14Garth Tander, car number two.
23:17Neil, I reckon you picked it really well, mate, with what you said.
23:20The track is normalising today.
23:22We can already see time's about a second and a half away, which is light years in our world.
23:26I can see a lot of changes in pit lane.
23:28Shane Van Gisbergen up there.
23:29FPR did a camber change just here a minute ago.
23:32Let me show you what's really weird.
23:33Here's the tyres.
23:35You said there before, Neil.
23:36Tyres wearing out.
23:37Here's our little tread depth marker.
23:38See those little holes?
23:39Typically about three and a half mil deep.
23:41Yesterday, with all that black laminate, call it what you like, that gluey tyre stuff on the track,
23:47the tyre was working so hard that it was eating the rubber away
23:50and they physically wore the tyres out.
23:52Very unusual.
23:53I don't think we'll see that today.
23:55Hey, guys.
23:56I know we were talking before we went to air about tyre strategy
23:58and who was going to do what as far as green tyres goes.
24:01Well, I've just been walking up in our pit lane.
24:03There are still a lot of teams here that have got a green set of tyres.
24:06Everyone's only doing two runs and they are saving a green set for the race.
24:10So it's going to be very interesting to see how that strategy plays out,
24:13especially after we discussed it.
24:15We thought that a road of tyre might do a better job.
24:17Yes, so remember, folks at home, it's a longer race today.
24:22This afternoon, 200 kilometres, double the distance of yesterday.
24:25There'll be two stops in it for Burel and that therefore makes it a three-segment race.
24:29So you need tyres for the three segments is what Greg's saying.
24:32Green box for McLaughlin in the second sector following a red box in the first.
24:36So he's got pace at the back end of this lap.
24:38And he's qualified on the front row in his career five times,
24:42including yesterday, and he's been at his own time.
24:45So yet to get a pole position in V8 supercars is today the day for Scott McLaughlin.
24:50And typically when Winton is, inverted commas, normal,
24:53and you put a new soft tyre on out there, you've got a lot of drive.
24:57So what they've done at Volvo Polestar Racing
24:59is they've inclined the car to the front,
25:01they've searched for more turn,
25:03and that has given Scott McLaughlin the yield that he's been looking for.
25:06So when Neil was saying about the rake,
25:08they've changed the ride height front to rear
25:10to give it the turn to make it more responsive at the front.
25:14And that is now indicated by, it was 21.57 before,
25:19he's on a 21.50,
25:21a little bit slower on the first sector of the next lap.
25:25So he may actually back it off and go again.
25:28Just on 60 seconds remaining now in this qualifying.
25:32At the moment, provisional pole, Scott McLaughlin.
25:34There's a story.
25:35Fabian Coulthard, the man that got the work done yesterday,
25:37is in position two.
25:39Mark Winterbottom, who's got four pole positions to his credit here,
25:42is in third.
25:46James Courtney out of turn 12.
25:49Went a little bit wide.
25:51Nick Perkatt just bought into the top ten.
25:53James Moffat, his time on the left-hand side of your screen,
25:56looks pretty juicy as well.
25:57He's down in 16th.
25:59So Rick Kelly at sixth.
26:01Moffat crosses, but he can't get up the list.
26:03Meanwhile, Jamie Winkup is 13th with a 21.96.
26:09That shot of James Moffat that we took there on the run into one.
26:13Back of the car, a bit disconnected, clouding the kerb,
26:15flying it across the kerb top there.
26:17Wild stuff.
26:18And Winkup's parked it in 13th.
26:22So he's not going to make the ten.
26:23But what about Fabian Coulthard?
26:26Well, the second sector was no good for him after the first was.
26:30He had both pole positions yesterday.
26:32So Holden have had the last ten poles in the championship
26:35and the last six at this circuit.
26:37But right now, Scott McLaughlin in a Volvo is at the top of the list.
26:42What about the AdVam racer?
26:45Dale Wood, currently inside the top ten.
26:47He qualified third for race seven.
26:49He stays in the ten.
26:50Van Gisbergen.
26:52Oh, he goes up to second by .06.
26:55But he can't knock McLaughlin off the top.
26:57Good effort, T2, mate.
26:59T2, good effort.
27:00And that is a landmark day.
27:02Oh, man, that's incredibly hard to drive with that steering.
27:05But great job, T1.
27:06A landmark day for Volvo Polestar Racing
27:09unless Mark Winterbottom has something up his sleeve.
27:12And he won't.
27:13He's three-tenths away at the second sector, Mark.
27:16And did you hear Shane say
27:17that it was incredibly hard to drive with that steering?
27:19So a lot of people up and down the pit lane
27:21have been having little power steering glitches this weekend.
27:24So Frosty, I don't think, can climb back from here.
27:27He's fourth at the moment.
27:28He's three-tenths off.
27:29That's how he's coming in.
27:30So three Kiwis, McLaughlin, Van Gisbergen and Coulthard.
27:34One, two, three.
27:36Richard Holloway down there in charge of operations
27:39at Gary Rogers Motorsport.
27:40It's the first time in four years the GRM have had poles.
27:44So McLaughlin with the Volvo S60
27:46salutes Armour Oil qualifying pole position
27:48for the first time in his career
27:50and the first time in 28 years
27:53for the luxury maker out of Sweden.
27:55Chas Mostert will start midfield.
27:56There's Jamie Winkup in 13th.
27:59So the troubles continue for the man
28:01who's now third in the championship.
28:05And that's another big moment for this 20-year-old Kiwi.
28:07Don't forget, the ITM 500 is in a few weeks' time,
28:11so he's hot to trot.
28:13Can they get their first championship win today?
28:15We'll have to find out as the celebrations continue
28:18at Volvo Polestar Racing.
28:19Night ahead, Sunday night footy on seven,
28:28the Bombers and the Blues.
28:29But here at Winton, the Armour Oil pole position for race nine
28:32goes to Scott McLaughlin, the first pole of his career.
28:36And the 20-year-old makes it a Kiwi clean sweep
28:39after Fabian Kultthar did the double yesterday.
28:41Scotty gets $1,000 courtesy of Armour Oil.
28:44And he is with Rihanna.
28:45Scotty McLaughlin, congratulations.
28:49Your first career pole position.
28:51Oh, stoked.
28:52And I never got one in Dunlop Series or anything like that,
28:54so to do it in the main game is awesome.
28:56And so stoked to do it in a Volvo,
28:58Valvoline Racing, Polestar.
29:00All these boys, they're stoked.
29:02I'm trying to reel off the sponsor lines,
29:03but we're stoked.
29:05I could see how much it meant to you and the team.
29:07You went around after you got out of the car
29:08and shook every single person's hand,
29:10every single person in this garage.
29:12You let them know that this is a team effort.
29:14Yeah, for sure.
29:15And, you know, they're the ones behind me
29:16and keep me going.
29:17And we've got a lot of critics out there
29:19and we're just doing our business
29:21and it's great to just silence a few guys
29:22and a few things have been changed
29:24and we're doing awesome.
29:25So I'm pretty happy
29:26and we've just got to keep rolling this on.
29:27Our race pace isn't as good,
29:29so we've just got to make sure we're on it.
29:30It was a tough day for you to be told
29:32when you're leading a V8 supercar race
29:34that you've got to come into pits
29:35because you've got an issue with the car.
29:37This is a great way to bounce back.
29:38It is, for sure.
29:39And we've just got to, fingers crossed,
29:40it holds on again,
29:41holds on more than it did before.
29:43But, yeah, at the moment,
29:44you can't take the smile off my face at the moment.
29:46Never can.
29:47Congrats, mate.
29:47Yeah, thank you.
29:48Thanks, everyone.
29:48Thanks.
29:49Well, this guy yesterday,
29:51amazing emotion winning that race.
29:52You're just talking about
29:53that it sort of hasn't really sunk in yet, mate.
29:55We haven't had time for it to sink in.
29:57I wanted to go off and have a beer
29:58to celebrate last night,
29:59but as you know,
30:00we've got a longer race today
30:02and do it all again.
30:03You know, we're not starting so well today.
30:06It's incredible how quick things change.
30:08And, you know, it's so close and so tight.
30:10Everyone's got great cars.
30:11And, you know, you win a race yesterday
30:12and looked in such control.
30:14And then today, you're 22.
30:16Yeah, we tried to tune it up
30:17to the track conditions today.
30:19But, man, you saw how much it changed
30:21from race one to race two yesterday.
30:23Just with the sun on the track,
30:24it ruined the grip.
30:26And there's even more sun today.
30:27It's hotter.
30:29So we obviously didn't go the right way.
30:31Hopefully we've learned something
30:32and we can tune it up for the race.
30:34Well, this thing had massive consistency yesterday.
30:36So he might be starting a fair way back.
30:37But as he said, long race,
30:38three stints and anything can happen.
30:42Well, I've managed to grab Jason Bargwana,
30:43the V8 Supercar Driving Standards Observer.
30:46Jason, a couple of things we need to talk about.
30:48There's a lot of heat,
30:49a lot of emotion down there in Russell's garage.
30:51We've seen it firsthand.
30:52Your view.
30:53First of all, mate, the incident.
30:54Let's just quickly cover off on the incident itself.
30:56Well, let's go back to this.
30:57At the start of the year,
30:58I made it clear that what we're going to try and do
30:59is deal with these incidents on the track if we can,
31:02rather than do it later.
31:03We've had a number of occasions where we've looked at stuff later.
31:06But if the evidence is really clear,
31:07and it's simple for us to see that there's someone at fault,
31:10we'll issue the PLP.
31:11And with the amount of laps to go,
31:13it was there to be issued.
31:15And more broadly then,
31:16I guess there's the reaction from Russell.
31:17And I know it's not necessarily in your department,
31:19but I guess he showed some emotion.
31:21We want our drivers to be emotional,
31:22express themselves,
31:23maybe overstepped it a little.
31:25Yeah, look, absolutely.
31:26There's emotion in this.
31:27We all know how important it is.
31:28When you're on for a result,
31:29there's a lot of passion involved in this.
31:30But at the end of the day,
31:31we get to the point where Russell's got the opportunity
31:33to have his opinion.
31:34He might not like the penalty,
31:36but once you start attacking the officials,
31:37once you start really stepping over the line,
31:40it becomes my role then to investigate that
31:42from an investigating officer point of view
31:43and find out there's a breach of rule 6.54,
31:46which is bringing the sport into disrepute,
31:48as well as threatening actions and words 6.513,
31:52which is just unacceptable in terms of attacking the officials.
31:55All right, Bargs, thanks for the heads up.
31:57We'll watch with great interest as to the outcome.
31:59Thanks.
32:00Former Bathurst winner Jason Barguana
32:02in the thick of the action
32:03in regards to Russell Ingle from yesterday,
32:05so watch this space.
