00:01In a major operation led by the Economic and Organized Crime Office in Ghana,
00:06219 people, mostly foreigners, have been rescued from a suspected human trafficking and cybercrime ring operating out of Oya Rifa, a suburb of Accra.
00:16The victims, lured into Ghana with promises of jobs and better opportunities, were instead subjected to forced confinement and exploitation.
00:24Ghana's authorities are now working closely with other security agencies and international partners to repatriate victims and dismantle the wider criminal network.
00:33219 people were arrested at Kunsak Estes in Oya Rifa.
00:39The victims were lured into the country by the suspects, ostensibly to give them lucrative jobs in Ghana.
00:47Some had been confirmed for over a year, and one victim from Nigeria revealed he was given just one meal a day.
00:54We work under fraud, fraud foster movement, so I do not have any other solution because we are not meant to go outside.
01:03We always stay inside our rooms, so I have been in Ghana for one year now.
01:10I do not have any other solution and any other determination, just to hustle and pray to God for my own rescue.
01:16Recovered from the scene were numerous laptops, internet routers, food, items and other tools believed to be used in online scams.
01:24Authorities have begun a thorough screening process to separate victims from the suspects and minors from others with support from the Nigerian High Commission and other stakeholders.
01:34Whilst the screening was going on, the Nigerian High Commission visited us, and then he met with the victims and the suspects, and then he admonished them to cooperate with them.
01:47Repatriation plans are currently underway for victims, particularly those from Nigeria, while similar operations are being rolled out in other locations to dismantle what authorities call a well-coordinated trafficking network.
