Sudan: Rapid Support Forces leader announces rival government

Two years into the civil war, Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, leader of the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), has declared a rival government in a challenge to the government supported by the Sudanese armed forces.

00:00He has fought Sudan's armed forces for two years.
00:05Now, General Mohammed Hamdan Daglo,
00:08commander of the paramilitary rapid support forces,
00:11has announced that he would establish a rival government.
00:15The RSF leader made the announcement on the two-year anniversary
00:18of the start of civil war in Sudan on 15th of April 2023.
00:23The RSF, which has been joined by other armed movements,
00:26will mostly control southwestern parts of the country,
00:29including the western Darfur region.
00:32According to the UN,
00:33recent attacks by the paramilitary forces in Darfur
00:36have killed over 400 people.
00:39While the group has suffered multiple battlefield setbacks,
00:42including losing the capital Khartoum and other cities in recent months,
00:46the announcement has raised concerns among experts
00:49that Sudan is heading towards partition
00:51or a prolonged conflict like in neighboring Libya.
