00:00Welcome to Bermuda, a small island paradise in the middle of the Atlantic.
00:07Seeing the turquoise waters, it does lift my mood.
00:10Go along the coast, okay? See you up there.
00:14A dedicated police service...
00:17Somebody's going to need to open this door up really quickly.
00:20...is keeping this British Overseas Territory safe.
00:25I think he wears the uniform very well.
00:27Do you want the $20 now?
00:29Officers, including Brits, doing their duty.
00:32It's tough. And it's really humid today.
00:37The reality is that there are challenges.
00:40Crime busting in a place where anything can happen.
00:44I didn't really expect the cows to run out the gate. Uh-oh.
00:49Going to great lengths to catch criminals.
00:54She's gone, gone. She's gone.
00:56Cannot make this up.
00:59With summer tourists arriving in droves.
01:02Woo-hoo!
01:03This is peak season for the police.
01:06Listen, baby.
01:07Calm down.
01:09I love policing. It's in my DNA.
01:12Coming up in Bermuda, a national holiday in the heat continues.
01:22This is what the police has to say.
01:23I didn't do anything wrong to anybody.
01:25There's danger on the water.
01:27People mixed with alcohol, mixed with heavy machinery, mixed with water.
01:30It's a recipe for a lot of problems.
01:32There's another boat out there.
01:33There's another boat right there beyond you.
01:36And officers respond to a critical bike crash.
01:40Hello?
01:41Oh, no.
01:42Can you hear me?
01:43The only thing on my mind is, I have to save this person.
01:46Bermuda's main public holiday is in August.
02:03And at the heart of it is a huge game of cricket, played over two days.
02:18This match is actually my favorite holiday.
02:20Well, it's a two-day, two-day holiday, four-day weekend.
02:25They've got to be the hottest days of the whole year.
02:28It's like 100 degrees in the shade.
02:31There's nowhere you're getting from it.
02:33The party scene around it is more like being at Glastonbury around Lourdes.
02:37Maybe that would be the closest thing.
02:39There's no bigger party all year, with the whole island invited,
02:44making it peak time to patrol for the police.
02:48You're not arresting anybody for drinking in a public place,
02:51which ordinarily you would do.
02:53So there are some allowances.
02:56We know we are going to be working very hard for about five full days.
03:01It can be, sometimes, a lot of work.
03:05People are going to be intoxicated.
03:07So it's about having your emotional intelligence in check that day
03:11to keep the peace.
03:12Morning. Morning. How are you?
03:16It's day two of the cut-match holiday,
03:19and at the ground there are thousands of spectators in high spirits.
03:23Making sure that everyone is behaving themselves
03:26are officers Crystal Correa and LaTanya Smith.
03:29Good morning! And what's this, a monster truck?
03:33Mmmmm.
03:37Everyone comes out, it's the East and the West meet.
03:40So the West is Somerset, and the East is St. George's,
03:44and they meet for cricket. And then they battle it out for two days.
03:48With Somerset from the West carrying a big lead into day two,
03:53for officers Crystal and LaTanya, just keeping a lid on their own rivalry
03:58may be the biggest challenge.
04:00I'm such a dedicated supporter. I wear blue and blue every day.
04:05Somerset is, of course, red and blue.
04:09I support Somerset.
04:11I support St. George's because she's been brainwashed,
04:14and it's been grilled in her as a child,
04:16so she didn't get to choose for herself.
04:18So it's St. George's.
04:20What is this?
04:21This time.
04:22Oh, he's dropped!
04:23Oh!
04:24Really?
04:25Really?
04:26Beautiful!
04:27Come on, darling!
04:32You want to nap here for your tears?
04:34Don't touch me.
04:35Don't touch me.
04:47Motorbikes are the main way of getting around in Bermuda.
04:52But with daily crashes on its roads,
04:55and most of them involving bikes,
04:57preventing speeding and dangerous driving
04:59has become a priority for the police.
05:02Unfortunately, it's become sort of Bermuda's culture.
05:07Bike accidents, they're just so frequent,
05:10it's so common, and it's every day.
05:13I mean, whether it's minor or major,
05:15it's at least one a day.
05:17And for a small island, in comparison to the UK,
05:20I mean, it's a lot.
05:26A particular focus for officers Chin and Imani Scott
05:29is tourists who've just stepped off cruise ships
05:32to hire bikes with no experience whatsoever
05:35of Bermuda's challenging roads.
05:38Road traffic accidents involving tourists
05:40during the summer months are very frequent.
05:43Every day.
05:44Every single day.
05:46Bermuda's roads are not easy to navigate
05:49because they're narrow, because they're small.
05:51They see the views while they're riding.
05:53They get excited.
05:54They start filming.
05:55They're pressing on their back,
05:56starts getting excited and wiggling,
05:57and then they look, that's it.
05:58It's done.
05:59A Bermuda tattoo is an abrasion sustained
06:02by colliding with Bermuda's asphalt.
06:04That's the best way I can describe it.
06:06Tourists have them all the time.
06:08Today, officers Daishan and Imani are positioned just outside Dockyard,
06:13Bermuda's cruise ship terminal.
06:17We have, essentially, I believe it's two cruises a day
06:21at the cruise port.
06:22But what it is, is that these motorcycle rental companies
06:23are based in Dockyard now
06:24so we have the tourists actually leaving from Dockyard.
06:26Totally
06:40Point.
06:41Three, two, eight.
06:42Suddenly, they get a call to get from the dockyard,
06:44which is the two buses.
06:45We have their cars and they get a stop to the dockyard,
06:47and we have the tourists in.
06:49We have the tourists actually leaving from Dockyard.
06:50Suddenly, they get a call of a bike crash nearby and that one of the riders is unconscious.
06:59The only thing on my mind is, I have to save this person.
07:02I may not save this person, but I'm going to do everything I need to do in order to save this person.
07:07I need to be able to walk away and say, I did everything I could.
07:11Officer Imani has been partners with Officer Deshawn for one year.
07:17Deshawn cares for life.
07:19He has been in some situations where he has had to do life-saving measures on people.
07:25He just jumps right in.
07:27Hello.
07:28What's taking place?
07:30Being CPR trained, they're first responders.
07:34Can you hear me?
07:37The fate of the injured female rider is in their hands until the ambulance arrives.
07:44All right, so help's going to be on the way.
07:46They should be any minute now, okay?
07:48A huge part of the cup match holiday is the celebrations on the water.
08:05And there is none bigger than the boat party at Mangrove Bay.
08:16Captain Patterson of the Coast Guard is in charge of making sure that every reveller remains out of harm's way.
08:23Morning, everybody.
08:25Last day of the cup match.
08:27Our main role is to go out and do safety for this event in Mangrove Bay right here.
08:34People who haven't done it, we're looking anywhere from 750 to 1,000 vessels in this bay.
08:39Then you sit there and say people and power drinking on top of that.
08:43Okay?
08:44Boat culture in Bermuda is for owners to tie their vessels to one another.
08:56We have an area that everyone goes to.
08:59They wrapped up a large party with people in the water swimming all day.
09:05Brit officer Hugo Benzinga is one of the 20-strong team who will be on the water keeping an eye out for every possible danger.
09:14You can have maybe 4,000 or 5,000 people and that's full-on.
09:21It is the biggest day on the water.
09:25Alcohol will be an issue.
09:27God expects many people to be drinking.
09:29It is going to be a very busy day.
09:31Given the dangers, it's vital that every boat here has the correct safety equipment,
09:37which means one life jacket for every passenger.
09:40Hey, guys.
09:41Slow down.
09:44Stop.
09:47Okay.
09:49One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine.
09:53I think I count 12.
09:55There's no offence here.
09:57All right, guys.
09:57Thank you very much.
10:03With so many in the water,
10:05Officer Hugo must also keep on top of speeding in the bay.
10:09The speed limit is 5 knots.
10:12Wow.
10:13Okay.
10:14So this is a ticket.
10:15$100.
10:17Yeah, $100.
10:18$100.
10:18$100.
10:18Right, yeah.
10:19There may not be any major incidents yet.
10:26We're going to go to Mangrove Bay right now to check out the raft-up party that's going on.
10:31It's just up ahead here.
10:33But with the party going on till sundown, Corporal Nathan Frick knows that things could take a turn for the worse.
10:42People mix with alcohol, mix with heavy machinery, mix with water.
10:46It's kind of a recipe for a lot of problems.
10:51It's a good thing we're here.
10:53In the middle of the island, British officer Jonathan Wood, known as Woody, is setting out on patrol in the heat.
11:14What are you selling? Lemonade?
11:22How much is it?
11:24$2.
11:25I might be tempted then.
11:27This is your change back.
11:29Okay, we'll tell them.
11:30Officer Woody's worked in Bermuda for seven years, but there are things he still misses about the UK.
11:49The roads here are very small, the speed limit's very low.
11:51You can't have any kind of, like, fast cars.
11:54They're not allowed on the island.
11:55So I miss having, like, a nice car back home and open driving on motorways and things like that.
12:01You wouldn't think you'd miss it, but actually I do.
12:04Today, he's helping to keep the narrow and winding roads of Bermuda free of danger.
12:11They do have quite a significant amount of accidents and serious accidents as well for the size of the island.
12:16So it is a high priority for the service.
12:18Officer Woody has spotted a motorbiker ahead of them riding straight through a junction.
12:28It's not a give way.
12:29It is a stop sign.
12:30So you should really still come to a full stop and then carry on with your way.
12:33Okay.
12:34Have you got your driving licence with you?
12:35So we can just check that.
12:36Yeah.
12:37Thanks, mate.
12:38Okay.
12:39You can just do me a 36 check.
12:41I'm satisfied that you've accepted my advice and that the driving, riding behaviour observed was a momentary lapse in good judgment.
12:47Being a minor offence, Officer Woody's decided to only give the man a warning.
12:52I'm just going to double check quickly that you've not got a warrant.
12:55You're not aware of any other warrants outstanding or anything like that.
12:57As soon as they've confirmed that, I'll let you get on your way.
12:59And awaits final radio confirmation that there are no outstanding warrants for the man.
13:04I'm there, B3.
13:06I just have a 4.
13:08What's that for?
13:11Creating bait on the shoreline.
13:13Just while we had him, I just did a courtesy check to make sure he didn't have any outstanding warrants.
13:18And it turned out that he did have one from several years ago.
13:21Just for going a little too fast near the coastline and creating a bit too much wake.
13:25I was giving a warning on a boat like four years ago.
13:29Who issued the warning?
13:30Was it like...
13:30It was Coast Guard.
13:31I got a boat.
13:32I was driving a boat on the shoreline.
13:34He said he'd had a conversation with the Coast Guard and that he was under the understanding that they've just given him a warning about it.
13:40But they must have issued him with a ticket.
13:42The rider denies he had ever received a ticket for the incident.
13:46Now there's somewhere that he urgently wants to be.
13:50Is it possible that I go to my house?
13:52I need to head back to a meeting.
13:53You've got to go to a meeting.
13:54Just bear in one second.
13:54I'll try and sort it.
13:55I'll try and sort it one second.
13:56With a warrant outstanding for the man's arrest, Officer Woody must either put him in cuffs or decide to use his discretion.
14:06I spoke to the incident room inspector.
14:09Obviously they didn't issue a warning.
14:10They must have issued you with a ticket.
14:12I was positively issuing a warning.
14:13It's taking into account that you're honesty and that you've got this important meeting with work.
14:18And as long as you surrender yourself first thing in the morning...
14:21I guess why this is coming to you.
14:22Let's go to Hamilton Police Station.
14:23Hamilton Police Station.
14:24They've okayed it for him to just present himself in the morning rather than arresting him and taking him straight down to the station.
14:30I'm confident he will hand himself in in the morning.
14:32You know, we could have had to arrest you now and take you in for it, which you don't want to do.
14:35I could have sworn that was beginning of the morning.
14:39Officer Woody has given the rider the benefit of the doubt with his mind on the bigger picture.
14:45We need the public on side at the end of the day.
14:47And so we need people to be supportive of us as well.
14:51So when we can be reasonable and use some discretion in circumstances like that, we will try and do it.
14:58Thank you so much.
14:58But what we will do is we'll do a follow-up to make sure that that has happened.
15:02And if not, then we'll be paying him a visit.
15:04With an ambulance still on the way, officers Deshawn and Amani are first responders to a motorbike accident involving tourists, one of which is unconscious.
15:26Can you hear me?
15:27The only thing on my mind is, I have to save this person.
15:31What's your name, hon?
15:33I need to be able to walk away and say, I did everything I could in that moment, no matter what the outcome is, to ensure that this person had a fair chance.
15:41Miss, does anything hurt you?
15:43My side and my leg.
15:45When I discover the rider is conscious, it's a big relief.
15:48Just for your information, she is conscious and talking with us.
15:51You never wish to be at the accidents that end in someone losing their life.
15:56So this one?
15:57I'm marked with this leg as well.
15:59It's like, whew!
16:00It allows you to just breathe.
16:02We have an ambulance on the way, please.
16:04But both riders still have significant injuries.
16:08We have one injured female and one injured male.
16:11The injured female is complaining of pain to the right side of her body.
16:14It looks like that's where she may have landed.
16:16And then we have a male with a potentially broken or dislocated, um, laugh wrist.
16:22The officer's immediate attention is on the injured female, with apparently the more serious injuries of the two.
16:29All right, if you can just lay back for us.
16:32Help's going to be on the way.
16:33They should be any minute now.
16:35Sir, do you remember exactly how this happened?
16:37Yes, I look.
16:39We're like turning the corner.
16:40Oh, okay.
16:41Your back's hurting as well?
16:42But quickly, the officer develops significant concerns about the injured male.
16:48First, it looked like she had the worst injuries because she did become unconscious.
16:53However, on our arrival, she was able to regain consciousness.
16:56But once the adrenaline came down, the male is now experiencing chest pains, and it's hurting him to actually breathe, on top of him having a dislocated wrist.
17:08Thankfully, the ambulance arrives to take charge of the man's care, with Deshaun sharing his concerns.
17:16There's no complaining of chest pains, because earlier he was saying that he doesn't feel nothing except his wrist.
17:21Right, that's the adrenaline.
17:22Right, right, right.
17:23And he's starting to hurt him now.
17:24So, no, it's chest pains.
17:25Yeah, if I had to guess, I don't think it's life-threatening.
17:28It could be a bruised rib or a broken rib of tension.
17:30Okay.
17:31The paramedics believe that neither rider has life-changing injuries.
17:36As a couple, they're going to go to the hospital.
17:38The girl looks a bit banged up, but I believe she's going to be perfectly fine.
17:42Good fortune has certainly been on their side.
17:46They had to have come through there and nicked the side of the pole over here.
17:51And they went straight on and hit that tree directly.
17:56I actually think they were very lucky because, one, it was a large tree that they crashed into.
18:05And two, when people were involved in collisions that have wooden railings in the vicinity, don't end well.
18:13I just find it crazy that they was able to squeeze through this little gap there.
18:18Yeah.
18:18That's a tiny gap.
18:20I mean, like I say, it was probably lucky because if they had hit this fence, it probably would have been a lot worse.
18:25Yeah.
18:25It's been a busy shift.
18:29I like to help people.
18:30I like to be the first responder, first one, you know, so that we make the ambulance and fire and rescue service job easier.
18:38I love police work.
18:40That's right.
18:40Me too.
18:41Sadly, Officer Imani knows that tomorrow may well bring another accident of inexperienced tourists on bikes.
18:49You expect it.
18:50I expect it to go to work and we'll probably have at least one collision today.
18:54And that one collision is likely to involve a bike.
18:57I mean, it's just going to be more and more coming.
19:00Boy.
19:00Boy.
19:21Corporal Nathan Frick is eight hours into his shift on the water, keeping Revelers safe at the boat party.
19:28It feels like the day is coming to the end.
19:31Slowly.
19:32It's been a long day.
19:34Much alcohol has been consumed with some of the usual consequences.
19:40For some of them, they're having a fun effect.
19:43For others, I've always seen a couple that have chumped off the water, is how we say.
19:48Definitely thrown up.
19:50So, yeah, we're definitely getting that.
19:53Corporal Nathan remains ever alert.
19:56People have had alcohol in their systems, and now they're driving their boats again.
20:04And they've had a lot of heat.
20:05They're a little bit dehydrated.
20:07So, not exactly thinking clearly.
20:09So, this is where we can have things such as boats colliding into each other.
20:13There's another boat out there.
20:15There's another boat right there.
20:16Do you want to?
20:17Boaters running over swimmers.
20:19We've had people calling out, asking for help, finding their people that are swimming, that they're leaving.
20:25So, we could have swimmers that are left behind.
20:27Also, when you have the alcohol and the heat, sometimes tempers tend to flare up, so we could get that.
20:36But they had to share it with you once.
20:37Because it was only one guy and his kids who got him.
20:39One life jacket for person.
20:40Last chance.
20:43So, we're just, this is the time where we're kind of a little more heightened senses right now.
20:46There has been no major incident so far, but Corporal Nathan knows the unspoken rules.
20:59Using the Q word is against all Bermudan law enforcement superstition.
21:05Oh, let's not say the Q word now.
21:07Now is not the time for that.
21:09If you say the word Q-U-I-E-T, while on shift, it's, um, you've basically cursed us to have a night of nothing but, um, trouble.
21:20Someone calls it and they absolutely jinx it.
21:23It's a jinx.
21:25Pretty quiet, actually.
21:28No kidding.
21:29What did you just say?
21:34You seriously said it?
21:39After the pressure of dealing with the bike crash, officers Deshawn and Imani are back on the road.
21:55Unfortunately, bike accidents become sort of Bermuda's culture.
21:59They're just so frequent.
22:01For a small island, in comparison to the UK, I mean, it's a lot.
22:09There's a lot of other cars that have been involved in accidents.
22:11No one knows this more than Officer Mark Lewis, who's in charge of the Bermuda Police Service Bike Pound, where damaged bikes involved in crashes are stored.
22:22These keys here, uh, most of them are bikes that have, um, been involved in accidents.
22:28I would say there's probably a hundred, maybe.
22:32A lot of these are serious, um, collisions.
22:36There are some bikes on here, um, that were involved in fatalities.
22:42But a lot of it is speed and overestimating their ability, if you ask me personally.
22:48I think a lot of people can, think they can ride better than what they, they do.
22:52The Pound covers a significant area, yet with so many crashed bikes, they're running out of room.
23:02At the impound, we have vehicles, if there's an investigation or an alleged offence that's been, um, committed.
23:08We'll bring it here and we'll have our traffic collision investigators, um, check the bikes.
23:13I'll show you a couple over here, what a lot of the bikes look like after a collision.
23:21This bike was involved in a head-on collision.
23:25Car pulled out in front of it.
23:27He was seriously injured.
23:28I believe he broke his pelvis.
23:31Um, this was a head-on collision.
23:33This is another guy, I believe he's got serious facial issues.
23:36Broken jaw, etc.
23:38There's another one here.
23:40This is broken legs.
23:41A lot of times, some of these collisions, you know, they're, they're life-altering.
23:47Um, loss of limbs, I mean, broken bones.
23:51Bike crashes are so common in Bermuda, there are very few people on the island who have been untouched by their consequences.
23:58I have lost a couple of people that I know, um, not just through the job, but, um, personally.
24:05Um, a friend of mine died when he was younger from a road traffic collision, single vehicle.
24:09I've got family members that have, um, had injuries from collisions.
24:15For Officer Mark, there's a simple fix.
24:18Slow down a little bit, think about what you're doing, um, drive defensively, and always think that you don't know what the other person's going to do coming towards you.
24:29My hope is that we can get a decrease in, um, road traffic collisions.
24:34Um, people slow down, pay a little bit more attention, and, um, my yard won't look like a scrap yard.
24:40Back at the cricket ground, the two-day cup match is drawing to a close, with Somerset heading for a big win over St. George's.
25:02Officers Crystal Correa and LaTanya Smith are making sure that the final is safe for everyone.
25:15How are you?
25:16St. George's fan, Officer LaTanya, may not have had the best day with her team heading for a heavy loss.
25:28I like to dance with St. George's people, though.
25:30Kill me down, girl, kill me down.
25:32Look at those lovely colours.
25:33Not really.
25:34Beautiful colours.
25:35And there is one other important event for many Bermudans that marks this national holiday.
25:44Today is all about cup match and it's celebration of Emancipation Day and abolishing slavery.
25:56Suddenly, there are reports of a disagreement between two men in one of the stands.
26:01He's coming through, excuse us, please.
26:03Which officers race to.
26:10We've asked you to leave this area.
26:13Listen to what the police have to say.
26:16I didn't do anything wrong to anybody.
26:18Why are you in front of me?
26:19The police remove one of the men who alleges that he was punched.
26:24I mean, no assault.
26:25I have no weapons on me.
26:26I have no weapons on me.
26:28I have no weapons on me.
26:30I have no weapons on me.
26:33They are trying to arrest me for doing nothing wrong.
26:37He's unhappy about the arrest.
26:40Today is slavery day.
26:42I am free on this day.
26:43And I'm not free to get punched in the face by some random guy.
26:48I don't want to do nothing to you.
26:49But you hit me.
26:50You hit me.
26:51I don't want to.
26:52I don't want to ask you a question.
26:53Do you have your body cam?
26:54Go ahead.
26:54Arrest me.
26:56With no sign of him calming down, he'll be taken to custody at Hamilton Police Station.
27:02I didn't touch a single soul.
27:03I didn't touch a single soul.
27:04The Somerset victory is confirmed, and one half of the island celebrates.
27:19As does Somerset fan officer Deshaun, who's ended his shift at cup match.
27:25It's been a good day, but, you know, because we are working during the day, I'm going to
27:31make sure I get my party on tonight.
27:38Tomorrow is my day off, and I plan to have a great day off.
27:42Next time, officers patrol the prison perimeter.
27:55If there's been an event inside the prison, and they're trying to get rid of a knife, they'll
27:59chuck it over the wall.
28:01And tempest flare at the station.
28:03We're going to be in the service.
28:04Come on.
28:05We're going to take this load.
28:12We're going to take this load.
