Chennai Super Kings' batting coach Michael Hussey said the entire team was disappointed after the heavy loss to Kolkata Knight Riders. "Obviously, we are very disappointed with the result and the performance tonight," Hussey said in the post-match press conference.

00:21ourselves individually about how we're going about it and look for ways to improve. Yeah there's
00:25certainly areas that that we haven't done as well as we would have liked or as certainly as we've
00:30planned to and but you know this this is where it's a time that we've got to really stick tight
00:35together, keep working really hard, keep working on the things that we think are really important.
00:41I mean I mean there's a lot of talk about the style of our play and things like that but that the the
00:47players we've got we don't want to ask them to play in a completely different way that that's natural
00:52to them that they've got here to the IPL for playing really well in in their way and and I'm
00:56certainly not one you know to try and get them to play in a different way you know like that they
01:02play at their best because they that's that's the way they play so I still think we've got the right
01:07players but we've just got to try and help them find find some confidence and and consistency and
01:12and then hopefully we can sort of grow and build from that whether that's with the bat with the ball
01:17in the field as well you know we've certainly been below par in in all three facets of the game so
01:23I mean we're not out of it all together so we've got to keep as I said we've got to stick tight
01:28identify the areas we can improve and and yeah just get back on that horse as quickly as we possibly can
01:33you know things can turn around quickly you know so if we start to fracture if we start to change
01:39things too much which has certainly not been a CSK trait in the past then I think things can go worse
01:45before they get better so you know I mean we'll need to do a bit of soul searching I mean it's it's
01:50quite raw at the moment so it's hard to really speak to exactly what we want to do moving forward
01:56I think we need to take some time to sort of sort of sit back think about it um review quite you know
02:02hard and um and then hopefully you know come together and um and just look for those areas to improve on
02:07uh yeah it's a good point I mean yeah we've got some new players that have come to the franchise so it
02:16does take a little bit of time for them to really um fit in and feel feel like they belong where we're
02:22trying to fast track that as much as we can uh and then it's just getting to know them and getting to
02:41know their games and and how they play their best cricket as well so we're working very hard behind
02:45the scenes with those guys and and the players you know you cannot fault their work ethic you know
02:50they're doing the hard work um but unfortunately this hasn't quite translated into performances just
02:55yet but what one of the um the real strengths of CSK over the years is um we'll identify the players
03:01that we've wanted and then we really back them in even if things aren't quite going to plan at the
03:06moment um you know we'll back them in and um and keep working hard with them and keep um showing some
03:13faith and trust in them and then hopefully that will be repaid in the in the long run
03:18i understand your point but but there is a thing that some of the players that you have taken are
03:25probably past their friday like at least in the domestic circuit also you have some young players
03:33also in the bench some you have they have they have been there for a while so why is this
03:38the luck tends to bloody young steps uh well i mean i i would argue that they're beyond their prime i
03:47i don't agree with that you know um we've had players at the in the twilight of their career come
03:52and play at CSK in the past i think of shane watson i think of ajinka rahane and uh and they've performed
03:59really well for CSK so uh i still think that the players that we've got still have some good cricket in
04:05front of them and can still offer us a lot um so i i don't necessarily agree that they you know
04:11they're they're beyond their best i still think we can find their best and um and see some great
04:15performances from them with regards to blooding youngsters um i mean we want to pick guys when
04:22they're ready to to perform as well uh we have had we've got some very good players that are waiting
04:27for their chance no question about that um but sometimes i think when teams give up the ghost and think
04:33oh well we we can't win the tournament anymore well oh we'll just try the youngsters now you
04:38know give them a go and you know that's we're still here to try and progress in the tournament as
04:43far as we can you know like we're certainly not putting the white flag up just yet um you only have
04:49to get into scrape into that fourth place and and big long tournament like the IPL it is about momentum
04:55now certainly the momentum is not with us at the moment whatsoever we haven't been playing good
04:59cricket consistently um we definitely acknowledge that put our hands up and and say that that is
05:04that is fact at the moment but that's not to say things can't turn around and can't turn around
05:08quickly so that's what we're still hanging on to that's what we're working hard towards and if we can
05:14change that momentum and get some confidence going and and get a few wins on the board the confidence
05:18will grow and you never know we might be able to scrape into one of those last positions in the uh in
05:23the table come playoffs time and um it's a it's a long way ahead and and we certainly need to change
05:28things around but um uh we still believe that we can do that
05:32Michael you've been part of uh previous uh CSK recipients both as a player and as a support staff
05:39just and even some of the most successful CSK teams over the past have lost just in terms of that
05:46how bad a loss is this and what are the kind of things that you tell your players
05:50and that's it yeah well this one hurts a lot i mean it really does i i said earlier um it the
05:59players are hurting um the support staff we're hurting and as i said earlier that the fans i'm
06:03sure are hurting with that one as well this is a time where you really find out who are your true
06:09supporters and i just know stephen fleming obviously he's been a he is a great coach he
06:15he will really and ms doni's obviously a he's been a great captain for a long time as well uh
06:20rutaraj is still going to be around the team i think they'll really try and bring this team as
06:25tight and as close together you know make sure there's no fractures make sure we still uh sticking
06:31tight because i'm sure we're going to cop plenty of criticism from the outside and and you know look
06:35we deserve it you know we haven't performed as well as we would have liked so far in the tournament
06:39but from the inside internal side of things we've got to stick really tight
06:43um we we still believe we've got the talent in the dressing room to turn this around
06:47it's going to take some hard work no question about that but um we're going to find out who
06:51our true supporters are the ones that really stick with us um i i you know the fans we have uh with
06:58for the chennai super kings have been absolutely phenomenal ever since day one really uh we hope
07:04that they continue to keep turning out and supporting us and and i know the guys will be really hurting from
07:08this and we'll want to turn it around for the fans you know as much for the for the dressing room and
07:14for each other as well but more for the fans because um you know they have stuck through stuck
07:19tight through us um with us for for a lot of um the good times and we hope that they stick with us
07:25now when things haven't quite gone to plan just yet uh was it uh a facet of the game that was missing in
07:39the batting performance today and how was the team looking to rectify that part without doubt i mean
07:46he's i think in my view he's one of india's best players you know uh i'd love to see him in colors
07:54a lot more than what he has already and and the reason for that is that he's um
07:57he's such a classy player he's got all the skills all the shots but he's also got a great cricket
08:03brain you know he understands when to attack when to maybe defend he understands how to manipulate the
08:08field and that's why we'll certainly be tapping into some of that knowledge with some of our other
08:13younger players that we're trying to improve their batsmanship skills knowing the right times to
08:18you know to to when to go who to go against um when's the times just to sort of maybe pull back
08:24a little bit that those cricket smarts that have been synonymous with csk over many many years
08:30uh rutaraj he certainly embodies a lot of those qualities so um yeah it's a massive loss for us no
08:35question about that you you almost can't replace a rutaraj for us um but we want to tap into his
08:41knowledge to help the development of some of the other guys as well
08:46is it possible csd can make playoffs from this position it's still possible of course um i mean
08:53we need to play a lot better there's no question about that uh as i said earlier we we i'll be the
08:59first to acknowledge when we haven't played consistently good cricket uh so far in the
09:03tournament um so we need to turn it around but of course we we have the belief that we have the talent
09:08in the room uh and the expertise to to still make it through to the playoffs so that's what we'll
09:13be working very hard towards but we've got to change the momentum and uh and get our confidence
09:18back as quick as we can last two seasons watching him is sure that he has a potential but it appears
09:31from outside like he's struggling to like sort of get used to the nature of the surface or whatever it is
09:36so uh just talk about this power uh this development of how he's been done
09:42trying to be the batsman that he wants to be because times when he looks like he is uh tries to
09:48over hit the ball as well sometimes it comes across about things i mean i i love working with
09:55rachan i think he's a fantastic player and he's still a young player you know uh i think he's taken
10:01some really good strides from where he was last year in his t20 cricket to where he is this year
10:05he's very clear on his process and how he wants to go about it uh and and i think he's he's definitely
10:11gone up a bit he's made a big jump in his in his um t20 batting already uh he'll only get better and
10:17better the more he plays um but i mean it's easy to look at the results and i still think his results
10:24have been okay so far i mean every batsman's going to miss out every now and then he's been his his
10:28results have been okay but i'm more interested in his process and his mindset and his thinking
10:33and he's become a lot more consistent with his process and he's a lot more consistent with his
10:37thinking so if he continues to to maintain that then i believe there's going to be some very good
10:42consistent performances for csk for a for a long time i mean is he the finished product no of course
10:48not you know he's still he's still a young player he's still developing but i i have seen a lot of
10:52improvement in him from this time last year to this time this year and we just obviously hope that
10:57that that that trajectory continues
