Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) bowling coach James Franklin feels that their team would've chased down the target of 201 against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but they didn't get the start they wanted. SRH got all out for just 120 in 16.4 overs at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata and lost their third consecutive game.

00:00The scoreboard pressure, what happened?
00:04I think at half time we felt that 200 was definitely gettable.
00:08I think we've seen over the last couple of years here at Eden Gardens that's
00:12sort of around about a par score, maybe 10 more than a par score.
00:17Probably in hindsight, that back end of our bowling innings
00:22they scored pretty freely. I think they scored 60 odd in that last four overs.
00:27But certainly at half time we certainly felt we were in the game.
00:31I think unfortunately just in that power play we obviously lost three wickets
00:35in the first three overs.
00:39I guess that's the style of players that we have up the top. They're aggressive.
00:43They've been lauded for a year and a bit
00:47and rightfully so for the style of play that they've played. In just the last couple of games it hasn't
00:51quite worked but we've got no doubts that our top order
00:55our batters will come good and we've got every faith and trust in them
00:59coming into this next game that we play against Gujarat on Sunday.
01:03It's just one of those days where it hasn't quite gone according to plan.
01:07There's obviously some frustration within the group
01:11but we're still very early days in this IPL and
01:15we've got a lot of quality players within our group that can certainly turn it around.
01:19Just a frustrating day.
01:23Can you give us a quick update on the pitching?
01:27We've obviously
01:31been here a couple of days and we've been observing how the pitch has
01:35been prepared over the last couple of days.
01:39History suggests that the last couple of years bowling first is the way to go
01:43here. There might have been a little bit of grip there the second half of the innings
01:47for the spinners for KKR but again they're world class
01:51operators and their ability to come through in the middle
01:55of the innings after our power play, after we'd lost Wickets
01:59they probably felt that they could control
02:03certainly the way that they wanted to bowl.
02:07Again it's just a frustrating aspect of today's game is that through that power play
02:11we lost Wickets, we weren't able to really put pressure on their spinners and
02:15they were able to go to work the quality spinners that they are.
02:19As I said at half time at that 200 score we certainly felt like we could have
02:23chased it down, we just obviously didn't get the start we wanted and we were always behind the 8 ball
02:27so to speak throughout our batting innings.
02:31Barring the issue of dismissals
02:35could you possibly concede that
02:39maybe the bowlers this time actually out-skilled the openers of SLH?
02:43I mean it wasn't just aggressive batting responsibilities
02:47The bowlers probably out-skilled the openers because it happened for three games
02:51in a row against KKR especially.
02:55Any thoughts on that?
02:59We could pick the bones out of every dismissal
03:03if you really wanted to and you're right in saying that the last few outings KKR
03:07have certainly taught us a lesson if we go back through last IPL
03:11as well. Again you don't want to
03:15take away from the natural intent of our top order and the way that they
03:19bat because as you've witnessed
03:23quite a lot over the last year it's breathtaking
03:27when it's going well and just the last couple of games it hasn't
03:31quite worked. They see the ball, they hit the ball, they know their own
03:35game plans and the way that they want to bat and
03:39it's probably a combination of things not quite working for them at the moment
03:43and maybe a little bit of that skill that you say
03:47with the way that KKR opening bowlers bowled tonight
03:51they took the pace off a little bit straight from the get-go.
03:55Maybe a perfect storm between those two combinations but
03:59I think you'll see as we go through this that our batting group will
04:03certainly fire and put some bowling attacks under some real pressure.
04:07One more follow-up. I think we're all looking forward to a different question on the batting
04:11Is that, will this change based on
04:15the performance in the last three games or do you still think
04:19this is the way to go? If it's three times it's wrong, four to five times
04:23it's fine. What are your thoughts on that?
04:27I go back to the first game. I think everyone was very much
04:31of the opinion that we're just taking off from where we left last year
04:35in the style that we batted so yes whilst it probably
04:39hasn't worked probably the last two games because even in the second game we got close to 200
04:43that can just sometimes be the nature of the game that we play
04:47and the way that particularly our batters want to play the game
04:51and we want them to play the game so yes whilst it hasn't been
04:55our best stuff these last two games as I said we've got
04:59every confidence within our group and within the individuals within our group to go out
05:03and play that attacking brand that I think we know
05:07and we've shown from an SRH point of view over this last year also
05:11Hi James, how do you assess
05:15the bowler's performance in the game over this past year?
05:19Was there an issue with the assessment or the
05:23attribution of a lot of stuff from previous games?
05:31Yeah again it's probably just a slight combination of
05:35both those parts you question the assessment and the
05:39execution I mean 65 I think off that last four
05:43overs probably reflects that we didn't get it quite right
05:47halfway stage I think KKR were 84 or 85
05:51for two and yeah I think
05:55if we got the back 10 overs right we probably could have
05:59held them to 170, 180 but yeah we didn't get it
06:03quite right the execution wasn't quite there and you know
06:07sometimes as a coach you sit there and think okay well
06:11could we have done things a little bit better could we have technically been a little bit braver
06:15with some aspects of it and those are conversations that
06:19we'll obviously have in the coming days before we go again on Sunday
06:23yeah it's reflections I guess between myself and the
06:27individuals that were out there and we'll obviously look to come back better with particularly that death execution
06:31but I think up until that point you know that first
06:35sort of three quarters of our bowling innings was pretty good stuff
06:51Again you could look at a lot of things
06:55and wish you could have time again that's the nature of the game, Kamendu came in
06:59and bowled a really good over, the match up was really good for
07:03Hind to come in and he obviously got a wicket as well
07:07yeah I mean I think it's more to do with
07:11the fact that maybe those last few overs just got away a little bit on us
07:15again through maybe a little bit of assessment a little bit of execution and those
07:19that's probably more what we need to reflect on rather whether or not
07:23tactically it was the right decision to not bowl Kamendu and then there's another over
07:29James, is Shabby bowling in corporate law, is he still
07:33in the process of getting into the book because we all know he has come back from a long
07:37injury lay-off and it might take some time
07:41yeah I think today was probably his strongest
07:45performance for us with the ball since he's come in
07:49and let's not forget that he also missed IPL last year and I think that
07:53whole sort of change in the batting tempo that we've seen in IPL
07:57so him and I and him within the bowling group
08:01are having some really good conversations around the ability
08:05to adapt, we know what a world class bowler he is and certainly
08:09with the new ball he's always going to create
08:13half opportunities or opportunities and we saw that
08:17today with the ball so yeah it's just a process
08:21of looking at how we can get better as a bowling group, how individuals can keep
08:25progressing and getting better and Shammy is a very
08:29experienced campaigner, world class campaigner so today
08:33was I thought a strong performance for him and I'm sure he'll get better and better
08:37as we go through the IPL
