00:00We're back with TV Sports, and for our Sports Panther, we're talking to James Ray Ajido,
00:05a young Filipino athlete who's making a name for himself in the world of swimming.
00:09Good morning, James!
00:11Good morning!
00:12What's your nickname?
00:14James.
00:16But he also has a second name, James Ray Mishael.
00:19Wow!
00:20His nickname is Sting Ray, right?
00:22Yes.
00:23Sting Ray is his nickname.
00:25Sting Ray!
00:26As we mentioned earlier, you're one of the top prospects in the Philippines when it comes to swimming.
00:31But tell us, James, how did your love for swimming start?
00:35It started when I was 8 years old.
00:38My mom made me learn how to swim because I was just at home, doing nothing.
00:45And then, I saw the potential of the coach.
00:48I told my mom, and then we started competing.
00:52I want to know, what's your potential?
00:54You backstabbed him.
00:56What's your potential?
00:58You were only 8 years old back then.
01:00I learned how to swim, and my strokes were good.
01:06Wow!
01:07Once the coach saw that a kid has potential, he really developed it.
01:13He's really good at it now.
01:16And it continued from when you were 8 years old?
01:18Yes.
01:19When did you start competing?
01:23When I was 8 years old.
01:248 years old.
01:25Do you still remember your first competition?
01:28I don't think I won any medals.
01:33I was just a relay swimmer.
01:34But weren't you afraid?
01:36A lot of kids your age are afraid to swim because the water is deep.
01:41They're afraid of drowning.
01:42What did you feel during that time?
01:44When I was younger, I was more afraid.
01:46But when I was 8 years old, I got used to it.
01:49I wasn't afraid anymore.
01:51Even though I'm 25 years old, I'm still afraid.
01:54I still don't know how to swim.
01:57But this is a teammate credit.
01:59James Rhee is really familiar to me because I covered the Asian Easy Group Championships.
02:04I think it was in 2023 in New Clark City.
02:07James Rhee was the first to win a gold medal for Team Philippines.
02:11But how was your campaign in New Clark City?
02:15You were the first to win a gold medal.
02:17How did the fans cheer for you in Capas Toilet in NCC?
02:22I'm very proud of the results.
02:25I'm very proud because my opponents were big.
02:32They were bigger than me.
02:35I thanked the Lord because He gave me the strength to win and to give me the record.
02:45I want to know about your motivation.
02:48Imagine that you're 8 years old and you can't stop swimming.
02:53What is your motivation to train everyday and compete?
02:59My motivation is my parents because they sacrificed a lot for me.
03:03Their effort and my motivation is to beat my best time in training and competitions.
03:13Have you tried other sports other than swimming?
03:17Before I started swimming, I tried basketball.
03:21You were 7 years old when you started.
03:25James Rhee is quite tall so he can build for basketball.
03:28We talked about the 11th Asian Easy Group Championships in Capas Toilet.
03:35The media was waiting for us to sing our Philippine anthem.
03:42Our editor was with us.
03:44Yes, Anggie was with us.
03:46She edited the news.
03:48How good was it to win a gold medal in Capas Toilet and to hear our Philippine national anthem?
03:56We looked at the flag and our spirits rose.
04:00I'm so happy because when the flag was raised,
04:05Lord Jesus Christ gave our nation a sense of worth as his people.
04:14I'm very thankful.
04:16James Rhee's faith is very strong.
04:20What James Rhee said is very clear.
04:23His parents' upbringing is good.
04:26James, what was your initial reaction when you learned that you would receive an award given by the Philippine Sports Association?
04:37I'm very thankful to the Philippine Sports Association.
04:41They recognize the remarkable achievements of our athletes.
04:46James Rhee is very consistent when it comes to awards for our sports buddies.
04:52With regards to the rising Filipino athletes, James is always there.
04:56He is well-deserving.
04:58At the age of 15 or 16, James Rhee won a lot of medals.
05:03But so far, from the age of 8 to 16, you are still swimming.
05:08For you, what was the most challenging competition?
05:11The most challenging competition was the 11th Asian HQ.
05:16There were a lot of countries that I competed against.
05:20I lost a lot of height and my body was big.
05:24Does it matter?
05:26For those who don't know how to swim, does the height matter?
05:31Yes.
05:32If you are taller, you can be the first one to touch the water.
05:36That's the most challenging.
05:38If you are the first one to touch the water, you will have a shorter time.
05:44How do you overcome that?
05:46You train almost every day.
05:50How do you solve that kind of problem?
05:54Especially for your opponents.
05:56You are still a junior, but when you face seniors, it's a tougher competition.
06:01How do you solve that kind of problem?
06:04I solve it by learning from it.
06:07I practice the techniques so that I can be faster in that area.
06:15I'm not that fast.
06:17What is your favorite event in swimming?
06:21The 100-meter butterfly.
06:23That's where he won the gold medal.
06:25Why the 100-meter butterfly?
06:27What's with the stroke? Why is it your favorite?
06:30I like the 100-meter butterfly because I was able to excel here.
06:35I was able to slow down my time.
06:37Over time, it became my favorite stroke.
06:40Wow.
06:41We have a lot of questions.
06:43James, what grade are you in?
06:48I'm in Grade 9 from LSGH.
06:50Oh, Grade 9.
06:52How do you balance that?
06:55You train and you also study.
06:58I balance that by using time management.
07:02After school, after training, and when I get home, I study before I sleep.
07:09But your class is still ongoing.
07:11Yes, it is.
07:12It's like you're absent.
07:15This is the proof that James Wadey is not absent.
07:18Shout out to your teacher.
07:20I know you because you're in Grade 9.
07:23You're still in high school.
07:26There are times when you don't want to train after school.
07:34But what keeps you motivated to train and study everyday?
07:41I'm motivated because if you work hard, your hard work pays off.
07:50That's right.
07:52Of course, it's harder for James because he's a student-athlete from Las Alginas Hills.
07:58And of course, when you compete internationally, you're always absent from school because you're in another country.
08:06How do you manage that kind of situation?
08:10Especially to our viewers who don't know what life is like as a student-athlete.
08:15How do you manage that?
08:17Of course, when you come back, you'll do all the schoolwork that you skipped.
08:21How do you manage that?
08:22I manage it if I'm done with my swim in my event.
08:27For example, if I'm in another country, I ask my class if I missed something.
08:33Then I can do it in advance.
08:35So that when I arrive, I can do it right away.
08:38What's your favorite subject now?
08:40My favorite subject is English.
08:42English?
08:43But I don't like that subject.
08:45I thought he was going to say that.
08:48I thought he was going to say that.
08:50But now that you're a senior, have you thought of a course?
08:53Because there are academic tracks, right?
08:56Senior high school?
08:57I haven't thought of a course yet.
08:59But maybe sports?
09:01Yes, there are sports.
09:04But what do you want to do when you grow up?
09:06Aside from sports, do you have a career that you want to pursue?
09:10For now, I'm still focused on being an Olympian.
09:17Wow.
09:18Especially the last Paris Olympics.
09:21There were two swimmers who competed in the Paris Olympics.
09:25Kayla Sanchez and Jared Hutch.
09:28So, here I am.
09:29What was your reaction when you found out that there are swimmers who can compete?
09:35Did you know that they competed?
09:36Yes.
09:37What was your impression of their performance in Paris?
09:41It was very motivating because I also want to compete in the Olympics.
09:46Did you think that one day, you will be the one who will swim there?
09:50Yes.
09:51We were waiting for that.
09:52I was waiting for the runway.
09:54Because when they are called, they walk, right?
09:56Yes, they walk.
09:57I was waiting for that.
09:59James Lane, as part of your journey as a swimmer,
10:04you mentioned earlier that your goal every single day is to have a short time in your events.
10:11But so far, how is your time in every event?
10:15What is the time that you want to achieve in your target time
10:21so that you can break records and win medals in your events?
10:28What I want is to have a shorter time
10:33because I'm about to qualify for the World Juniors.
10:37It's just a few milliseconds.
10:41He already mentioned the World Junior Championships.
10:45What are the preparations for us to qualify here?
10:50It's just the times.
10:52I really want to have a shorter time.
10:55The competitions that you will participate in,
10:58is that the basis of the World Junior Championships?
11:02Is that your time there?
11:03Is that their basis?
11:04So, do you need to enter the qualifying time?
11:09I know that it's top 10 or top 8.
11:12Top 10.
11:13And so far, how are your rankings for the qualifiers?
11:16I don't have one yet.
11:18You don't have one yet.
11:19But in the World Junior Championships, what are you looking forward to?
11:22It's just a few years.
11:24You're about to transition to the Seniors Team.
11:27So, what are you looking forward to in the World Junior Championships?
11:29When is this? Where?
11:31It's in Europe.
11:34In Europe.
11:35And when is it?
11:36I'm not sure.
11:38You don't have a date yet.
11:39But how are your preparations?
11:42What are you looking forward to for this competition?
11:47I need to work hard on my training.
11:51And always do my best.
11:53Let's look forward to your campaign here in the World Junior Championships.
11:57Now, James, we have a lot of upcoming tournaments.
12:01So, what are our upcoming tournaments?
12:04And Broadway to the Olympics in 2028.
12:08My upcoming competitions are the Anypoint Tryouts and the Palawan Pambansa.
12:15Oh, that's close.
12:18James, you're one of the contenders for the Palawan Pambansa.
12:23But last year, you didn't play.
12:26No, I didn't play.
12:27So, James is your opponent.
12:29In the Palawan Pambansa, in Ilocos Norte.
12:34So, what are you looking forward to?
12:36Do you plan to win a gold medal in the Palawan Pambansa?
12:41My goal is to win gold medals and records.
12:47What category? All of them?
12:49Yes, all of them.
12:51Oh, my. James is afraid to compete in different regions.
12:56What region will you represent?
12:59NCR.
13:00Oh, NCR.
13:01I'm from Mandaluyong.
13:02So, I'll represent home court.
13:05We all know that NCR is the overall champion in the Palawan Pambansa.
13:10It's a shame that James didn't play.
13:12Last year, he didn't play in Cebu.
13:15So, since you're in Grade 9, this will be your second to last Palawan Pambansa?
13:21Third.
13:23Oh, third.
13:24Next year, I'll be 18 years old.
13:26Oh, okay.
13:27So, senior high.
13:28Yes.
13:29But aside from the first Palawan Pambansa and Junior Championships,
13:36you're now 16 years old.
13:39But overall, what is your ultimate goal for your swimming career?
13:44Especially, you're 16 years old and after two years, you'll transition to the senior state.
13:50My ultimate goal is to become an Olympian and to break international records.
13:56But who is your Olympic swimmer idol?
14:00I think I know who you're talking about.
14:02Michael Phelps.
14:03Of course, Michael Phelps is the idol of young swimmers.
14:07He's the most medaled swimmer.
14:10I think he's also the most medaled Olympian.
14:12Yes, he is.
14:14I watch his videos.
14:16It's so fast.
14:17Maybe your mom watched it.
14:19Yes, maybe your mom is also an idol of Michael Phelps.
14:21I saw my son.
14:22Yes, your father is also an idol of Michael Phelps.
14:24But this is the last question from us, James Ray.
14:29You're 16 years old.
14:31You started swimming when you were 8 years old.
14:34He's already 8 years old.
14:35So, you started swimming when you were 8 years old.
14:37You're already a veteran when it comes to swimming.
14:40What do you want to say to your teammates, especially those who are your age,
14:44who also want to start swimming and learn how to swim.
14:47Maybe you'll be part of the national team someday.
14:49I want to say to the youth,
14:53always do your best in training,
14:56trust in the Lord,
14:58always train harder,
15:00and honor your parents.
15:03I also want to know,
15:04what is your advice to those who want to learn how to swim?
15:08Especially those who are afraid.
15:09Yes, afraid of water.
15:12Just practice everyday.
15:15Swimming is also for survival skills,
15:20just in case you're in a pool or a beach.
15:23That's a shout-out to the coaches,
15:26to your parents,
15:27teachers, and classmates.
15:30Maybe they'll take a break later.
15:33Shout-out to your friends, coaches,
15:35and of course, to your parents and friends.
15:37First of all, I want to thank the Lord for this opportunity,
15:41for the strength He's given me to achieve this achievement.
15:46I also want to thank my parents for their effort,
15:50for their hard work,
15:53and also to my coaches,
15:55to Coach Weng, Coach Amil, Coach Pao, Coach Rad, and Coach Rox.
16:00And to Coach Evan, thank you for guiding me.
16:05And also for my teammates and my friends,
16:10thank you for your support.
16:13And to Sir Jun, right?
16:16Again, thank you so much, James Riajido,
16:18and good luck in your upcoming competitions.
16:21And let's look forward to what James Riajido will do next.
16:25I'll look forward to that in the next tournaments.
16:27Yes.
16:28All right?
16:29Top prospects.
