00:00So we're a primary school serving here in the Dunscroft community in
00:05Doncaster and part of Delta Academies Trust.
00:09It's a massive job what we're doing here so we've got the academic side
00:13which we obviously work on, I'm really proud of where we're getting with that
00:15but the focus I suppose with our school and the trust is the whole child
00:19so I'm trying to develop them you know aside from the academics but emotionally
00:23and socially as well so it's the kind of the
00:28rounded person we're trying to build if you will from here.
00:32What do you think sets Crookes Broom apart from other schools, what makes it
00:36different? There's no one thing I don't think, it's basically
00:40what I say is we have really high standards and then it's as simple as we
00:44do the basics really well all the time because I've
00:47often thought and people talk about outstanding and these lesson
00:51observations and so on and how you can be amazing but I don't think
00:53that's a magic trick. We're fortunate to be part of a
00:58of a trust where there's loads of collaboration so standards are so high
01:01in Delta and we work together with our colleagues which is really helpful.
01:04You obviously do you know teaching the basics really really well your
01:08results are excellent and what do you think it is sort of about the school
01:11and about the school environment that makes it a really great place for
01:14children to learn these basics? The main focus perhaps was the initial
01:18focus has been actually the environment itself and the
01:21surrounding because it's a really amazing place to come in
01:24when you walk into the school hopefully you'd see
01:26it's beautifully maintained and looked after, inviting and exciting and engaging.
01:31I say to staff we can't control what happens outside of our walls but we can
01:34what's within so children come here and they see this is an amazing place it
01:38looks fantastic and it's professional, it's welcoming,
01:41it's inviting, it encourages imagination too. Really
01:45important that we don't have any kind of flashy tricks or anything it's just
01:48like I said before the basics done really well all the time
01:52and then there's just in terms of the curriculum it's
01:55again just done consistently and really well. I've got some great teachers
01:59fantastic teachers here the curriculum is really strong and consistent and just
02:03by making sure children get this brilliant
02:05diet of excellent learning all the time so rather than having a flashy lesson
02:09one off here and there to show off for someone who's observing it's about
02:12just regular brilliant stuff so they can connect their learning together
02:16and really make progress so I think that level just gives this I don't know
02:21it's really inviting I think for children they know what
02:23they're going to get so they're not going to be shocked any day we come in
02:25but they know that this is a place that they care about and they're proud of
02:30and that sets the standard I think to go on and achieve.
02:33And one thing that really struck me when you first sort of reached out to me was
02:36you mentioned that the school had had some challenges
02:40what what did you sort of mean by that what sort of challenges are you facing
02:43and you're sort of dealing with as a school community?
02:45Our children here are absolutely incredible but some of them
02:49you know like I suppose everywhere but children are brought up in different
02:52ways and different backgrounds and it can be difficult and there's children
02:55who have had different types of trauma and it's
02:57part of the biggest challenge has been creating that level playing field because
03:00I think it's probably fair to say nationally
03:02there are there's really imbalance I think
03:06in between areas I mean we all know about north south and the London centric
03:10sort of nature it sometimes feels the country is
03:13so one of the challenges we're really working on
03:16is ambition to say to our kids that yeah you know what it's fine be proud to be
03:22from here and that's why we want to make this a wonderful area
03:25having that ambition for children to say yeah we love our area and we're proud of
03:29it but actually there's nothing wrong with
03:31aiming high and going big and opening your eyes to the world because
03:34there's everything out there and just some of our children maybe don't
03:38necessarily have that drive or haven't seen it before I think it's really hard
03:42if you're maybe the first or one of the first in your family or
03:44friendship group or something to make that move
03:47but we've got some great inspirational role models that we've seen
03:51so we're just trying to show these children that yeah you can do it
03:54and we'll support you all the way
