00:00Adolescence has quickly become the most talked about show in 2025 but are we
00:05taking the wrong lessons from it? I'm TV and tech writer Matt Monaghan and these
00:11are a brief summary of my thoughts. I've got a longer opinion piece which will be
00:14attached for this video for you to find out more in depth. I'd start with what
00:20is adolescence? It's a drama about a young 13 year old boy who murders one of
00:25his female classmates. He doesn't seem like the type. That's the
00:31shocking aspect that he's a nice normal 13 year old boy from a middle class
00:37background and he just stabs and brutally murders one of his classmates.
00:42It's tackling topics like the intel culture and manosphere which is
00:48propagated by popular figures like Andrew Tate online and is drawing upon
00:54misogyny that's baked into a lot of our societies around the world. It's become
01:00a really talked about show. It's been a massive hit. It's setting the national
01:05discourse in the UK a bit like Mr. Bates vs. the Postman last year, 2024, but
01:12unlike that it's not an easy fix. You can't just overturn wrongful convictions
01:18of postmasters. This is a issue that's gonna have to take real effort to fix
01:24and I feel like a lot of people, the discourse around it is about, oh we just
01:30need to ban mobile phones but for teenagers and ban them in schools and
01:36maybe ban them off social media and I don't know what the right answer is but
01:41that's too simple really. Like we're going down a rabbit hole that isn't the
01:47issue in the show itself. His parents, the texts of the show, say that he was
01:53radicalized while, you know, he was always in his room on his computer with
01:57the door locked, suggesting that's where he was radicalized. So whether he has a
02:01mobile phone or not wouldn't have changed what he saw on his computer, you
02:06know. So I think we're getting a bit, you know, in the weeds and looking for just a
02:13quick buzzy fix and it's an issue that's gonna take a lot of effort to solve. It's
02:18not something that we can just click and it's gone like the reversing the
02:23postmasters convictions. It's something that's gonna have to be grappled with
02:30and it's, yeah, we're taking the wrong lessons from the TV show is my point. You
02:36can read my full thoughts in my opinion piece below. Give it a like and share
02:42with it if you enjoy it.
