00:00Tragedy at the heart of a small community. A local bus stop, now the scene of a fatal
00:09crash, claiming the life of a six-year-old boy.
00:13It's had a significant impact. It's a small town that many local residents will drive
00:17past this scene every day. It'll be an image that some people will never be able to remove
00:21from their mind.
00:22I think everybody in the community is feeling sad and just can't stop crying all day.
00:27Devastated, especially for that family.
00:30Six-year-old Caleb was on his way to school with his two older siblings when he was hit
00:36around eight o'clock this morning. Police say the 84-year-old driver initially stopped
00:42at the scene, but then left. They later tracked her down at a Teesdale address.
00:48Some witnesses saw her stop the vehicle and managed to get the registration for us, which
00:52assisted fantastically.
00:54Police say witnesses, including a nurse, attempted CPR, but the boy was unable to be saved.
01:01In a statement, the principal of the boy's school said it was a tough day for all at
01:06Covenant College. This has come as a huge shock to our close school community.
01:13Some locals believe a tragedy along this section of road was inevitable. They say calls for
01:18a safe crossing and a reduction in speed limit were ignored.
01:23They need to do this really fast because another child or an elderly person will be
01:27the next victim. This isn't the end of this. People drive through here so fast.
01:32The Teesdale community have already rallied around the boy's family.
01:37It's a small community and like most Australians and Victorians, during difficult times we
01:42wrap our arms around each other and support where we can.
01:44A community coming to terms with the loss of a young life taken far too soon.
