00:00Portion of I-26 East was closed for hours this morning after a 16 car pileup caused a major backup.
00:06News 13's Taylor Thompson was there and takes us through what led to this chain reaction crash.
00:12I'm here just in front of the Peter Geist Memorial Bridge where you can see traffic is
00:15once again flowing but that was a very different scene for about two and a half hours on Monday
00:20morning when a tractor trailer hit a car leading to a 16 car pileup. Almost a dozen tow trucks were
00:27going back and forth near mile marker 55 working to get vehicles out of the roadway. State highway
00:33patrols as they received a call around 7 45 a.m it started with a truck that had hit a bump in
00:38the road and lost their construction cones. This caused traffic to slow down leading a tractor
00:44trailer in the left lane to hit a car in front of it starting a significant chain reaction as the
00:49tractor trailer was coming onto the bridge. One of the drivers involved in the pileup says he had
00:54never seen anything like this before. Just driving and you know traffic's usually bad in this area
00:59anyway but uh it was just stop and go stop and go heard a loud clash behind me and I looked back
01:05and the 18-wheeler was just taking out multiple cars. The crash caused a major backup with I-26
01:11East being shut down at exit 54 for about two and a half hours and state highway patrol says there
01:17were a few injuries but to their knowledge none of them were life-threatening. The portion of the
01:21interstate reopened a little before 10 30 monday morning. In Henderson County, I'm Taylor Thompson, News 13.
