Bohol gov optimistic tourism to get boost with full privatization of airport
Bohol Gov. Erico Aristotle Aumentado expresses optimism on March 18, 2025 that tourist arrivals will increase once the privatization of the Bohol-Panglao International Airport is fully implemented. He said Aboitiz Infra would take over the airport’s operations, citing the successful management of the Mactan Cebu International Airport under the same company as a sign of progress. Aumentado created a task force to address the ongoing issue of overpricing in the province, which has affected both locals and tourists. Reports of inflated prices, particularly in tourist areas, have raised concerns that even basic commodities have become unaffordable for some residents. Aumentado said the task force would closely monitor market prices, enforce compliance with suggested retail rates, and take action again.

00:00The takeover of the aboities at Mt. Airport, the schedule, the timeline, and also the specifics of Panglao Airport.
00:18I think he's so impressed with the preserves at the airport.
00:25Even though it's still under construction, you can see that the CRs are still functioning.
00:35And secondly, the issue with the ATO was resolved.
00:40The issue with the aboities at Panglao Airport, the arrested farmer preserve.
00:53So, that's one.
00:54And thirdly, the use of the old airport in Taguilaran that was owned by Bohol Business Park.
01:08Since the property is still under construction, we had initial talks on how to make it done earlier.
01:22Including MOA, contracts, PPP.
01:27We found a PCS way to achieve it first.
01:35And lastly, during our RDC, in the previous administration, I mean, Secretary,
01:47they opened up BRT, Bus Rapid Transit, in Taguilaran, Panglao, Dawis.
01:57And I told them, if we will push that kind of project,
02:03we have a bad experience in Cebu since Taguilaran is very congested, broad, narrow.
02:09So, I think it's not feasible.
02:11But outside Taguilaran, we can do it.
02:14If Bohol is our target.
02:18I rather request, if possible, to have a monorail from Taguilaran to Panglao.
02:26So, there will be less traffic, and there will be more area needed for the monorail.
02:36Officially, where are the traffic-congested areas?
02:39In Taguilaran.
02:41So, the DOP is already in BRT?
02:44Yes, in BRT.
02:46In the previous administration, I mean, by Secretary Bautista.
02:50But what is their take on your suggestion of a monorail?
02:54Pardon?
02:56What is their take on your suggestion of a monorail?
02:59They said that it's feasible.
03:02At least, if you have a pilot for a monorail.
03:07In Taguilaran, Panglao is not yet overcrowded.
03:12It means that there is a lot of area and space that is needed.
03:19So, I'm very positive.
03:23In Panglao, it's okay to have a pure tourist.
03:27But now, from Boracay to Cebu, we have business operators.
03:37It creates problems for us as locals.
03:42Because we are competing with the locals.
03:44That's why I will talk to them.
03:46I want to inform them that it's always a slap for the locals to invest in the monorail.
03:58Because mostly, the Koreans have already eaten.
04:01Before, the locals already have a tour bus.
04:06They can afford it because they can drive.
04:10In short, they can't afford local food.
04:14They don't have hotels.
04:16It's unfair.
04:19That's why I created a task force here.
04:22So that they can check their businesses.
04:29Appeal to the Bureau of Immigration.
04:33So that they can check one visit.
04:38Mostly, the locals have already eaten.
04:40The Bureau of Immigration received a yellow paper.
04:45The Bureau of Immigration is paying them.
04:51In connection to the government,
04:53there is a persistent issue of increasing the prices of tourists.
04:57Even the locals can't afford it.
04:59What are the measures that you are taking?
05:02That's true.
05:04As of now, I have to talk to the Department of Tourism and the council.
05:16How to deal with that.
05:18This tourism industry is more familiar to me.
05:24I have to listen to them before making any decision.
05:29That's true.
05:33We have a market that we have to identify.
05:36We have to clarify what the market is.
05:42For example, if you look at the market here,
05:47it's more on packers.
05:51That's why we have to study it.
05:55If you are a packer,
05:57and you have a caterer,
06:00if we have this kind of good tourist,
06:08it's okay.
06:10That's why we have to study it.
06:12But of course,
06:14our experts are the DOT,
06:17the Department of Tourism.
06:18We will rely on them.
