00:00We told the kids that Judah and Katie have a big announcement for them today.
00:10Hi guys, welcome back to another video. I'm Sarah. If you're new here, this is my husband.
00:15Hey guys. This is Solo and we are city folk with a lot of children who recently moved to the country
00:22and we are doing all the things. Not all the things. We will never do all the things.
00:26We're learning every day.
00:27We're doing a lot of things and one of them is milking dairy cows because we're crazy people and it's very new for us.
00:35So, funny story. Last year, we kind of, we got some cattle panel because our cows kept escaping.
00:42We were new to, very new to cows and they were not in milk yet and we put them behind cattle panel.
00:48My sister-in-law grew up with cattle and she's like, winter is hard, but spring is worse.
00:53And we weren't milking them every day or anything. So, spring came and sure enough, it was very muddy,
00:58but we let them out on pasture right away. So, it wasn't a big deal and we weren't like up and personal with the worst of where spring can be.
01:08So, fast forward. We have a little shed and our cows were due with babies and someone came and helped us finish off that shed,
01:16but right before that, our builder had a bobcat out here and he's like, oh, he told Solo,
01:21I'll help you get all this stuff out of your little barn shed that we were kind of preparing for our cows.
01:27Well, we didn't use it that much, would you say? They didn't use it hardly at all once we let them out.
01:33We didn't give them the cattle panel by the shed most of the winter. It was like halfway through the winter.
01:39We gave them that and then the minute they were out on pasture, they barely ever came back to the shed.
01:44So, it was kind of gross, but it wasn't terrible, terrible. Well, so we cleaned it all out with that bobcat.
01:51How long did that take? I don't remember. It was fast and easy though, right? Yeah.
01:56And so then, now we're milking babies born. They're back in the cattle panel.
02:03Yeah, the calves. It sounds really weird when you say babies. But they're baby cows.
02:11And I was trying to like get some of the poop out of the stalls, the dung, let me say the correct term, as we went.
02:20But very quickly, it got very cold and so it was so hard to get my milk machine in there on wheels.
02:28We ended up putting it in a wagon. When it gets very cold here, it freezes. Yes.
02:32Some people are not in places where it actually, the ground freezes. Yes.
02:37And so it's like boulders that you're rolling over. So we had a big wagon, which helped.
02:41And then I knew like this is getting deeper and deeper. We're going to have some issues. I'm not sure what to do.
02:48They're so hard to get out. And then all of a sudden, it turned warm about a week ago.
02:55And it turned real warm and all of those boulders melted down.
02:59So now, we had a dirt floor in our barn anyway, but it became a concoction of dirt, dung, and straw.
03:07We're putting straw in it all the time. To give them good beddings at night.
03:09Give good beddings, try to keep our milk machine and that milking area as clean as possible.
03:14I put down like Chuck's medical pads, you know, when I'm putting the machine on so that I can keep the machine clean.
03:22But yeah, suddenly it became like a real issue and I'm like wrapping the machine in washcloths to keep it out of the dung.
03:29I'm going through all the extra steps.
03:31Wow, we have like rakes and shovels that are not working very well to get this stuff up.
03:36So, we're learning. It's been an experience.
03:40I did film a video last week where I showed it like right after it melted.
03:45The last of it, yeah.
03:46And some people are very, very critical people.
03:49But a lot of people that actually have experience are so very helpful.
03:52And some are like, you need to try to keep up on it through the winter.
03:58I was reading my cow book. Nobody really talks about it.
04:01And a lot of the situations I see online, the homesteads, they have a stanchion where they milk the cows.
04:06The cows come up on something.
04:08So, if they poop on it, they just scrape it off right away, you know.
04:11And we don't have that situation.
04:13And then they also have like an area where their milk machine goes where the cows never walk.
04:18But that's not our situation at all.
04:20It's not yet.
04:21Yeah, so we're learning. We're trying to figure it out.
04:23But we're headed right now. It's our day off.
04:25But what are we doing?
04:27We're going to buy...
04:28What are they called? Pitchforks?
04:30Maybe.
04:31Yeah, and labor.
04:32We're just trying to figure out a solution for making that work a little easier.
04:36So, we're exploring what...
04:38And sometimes it's the tools that you have.
04:40So, like a pitchfork and a wheelbarrow will go a long way, I think.
04:44But we did something really cool.
04:46We got some cattle panel. We bought some cattle panel from a friend.
04:49And we were able to expand their yard so much.
04:53I wish we would have gotten video, but I'm going to show you where they are.
04:55They were jumping. They were so excited.
04:58We have two mama cows. We have their babies, the calves.
05:01And then we have a bull that we're borrowing right now.
05:04A what?
05:05They call it a breeding bull.
05:06Breeding bull, yes. His name is Big Bull.
05:09So, Sullivan and I are headed to get that stuff.
05:11But let me show you.
05:14We were able to see the black part is where their yard used to be.
05:17That's our little barn where we milk.
05:20And now they have all this space.
05:22And they've been so happy.
05:25So, we're just separating the calves from the mamas about four days a week.
05:31Well, we just did it last week for the first time.
05:33We did it four days. So, three days they had off.
05:35And we just separate them at night only and then milk the mamas in the morning.
05:39So, the other days we've left it.
05:40But there's one of their waters.
05:41They have one in the barn where the calves have it.
05:43But they all have access during the day.
05:45And yeah, super big yard, which is also great for keeping everything cleaner.
05:51So, this will be our situation now in the winters.
05:54And they have all these trees they can scratch on.
05:56They're over there by their hay.
05:58And the babies are laying down.
06:00But that's been great so far.
06:02We just did this yesterday with the help of Micah and some of his friends.
06:06And it was awesome.
06:07One thing I think is great to normalize is just letting people make mistakes.
06:11Because, you know, when you try new things, you're not going to be perfect.
06:17I know we still have to figure it out.
06:20And I love advice and ideas.
06:22Because I'm really struggling to figure out how.
06:24When it's very, very cold to get that stuff up.
06:26But it's okay, I think, personally.
06:29You never do anything if you're too afraid to make mistakes.
06:33Man, my phone's just blowing up.
06:35But it's okay to let people make mistakes too and figure it out.
06:40Is it the best that it became like a pool of poop?
06:44No.
06:46Full of straw?
06:47No.
06:49But we're going to figure it out and do better for next winter.
06:52We're definitely ten times farther than we were a year.
06:55Yeah.
06:56Even more.
06:57And last year, our mistake was thinking that the electric wire would do good through the deep freeze and deep snow.
07:04And we learned through that too.
07:06So we're just learning.
07:08Thankfully, everybody who's come to our farm that really knows something about cows.
07:13A friend of ours that runs a micro-dairy.
07:16Our veterinarian.
07:18Everyone has said that the cows are so very healthy.
07:21And so, they've remarked about that specifically.
07:24So, I know we're making mistakes, but we're also doing okay, I think.
07:30So, anyway, on our day off to buy stuff to deal with poop.
07:35That's our life.
07:37We would rent a bobcat again, actually.
07:39We would just rent one from Home Depot or something.
07:42But, when we used it, we didn't have a whole wall on the shed on one side.
07:48And now that we do, I don't think it would fit through the door.
07:51And Solo told me there's standing bobcats which might work to rent.
07:56So we may look into that too.
07:58Just see if there's something that can make this job way easier.
08:01Because we have months of it built up.
08:07And we used a lot of straw to get through.
08:10So, it multiplied the mess.
08:14Okay, guys, we ended up going to Tractor Supply first just to check what they had.
08:18And the nice thing about Tractor Supply, wouldn't you say, is that...
08:23Oh, here's somebody.
08:25No.
08:26I saw her behind us.
08:28And I thought, I wonder if that's them.
08:30The nice thing is they had a lot of options for wheelbarrows.
08:36And they mark on the rakes.
08:38Sorry, I'm trying to block the wind here.
08:40Like, what's for manure?
08:42I mean, Home Depot's probably not doing that.
08:44And what's for bedding?
08:46So, we got a pitchfork for manure and bedding.
08:48Since ours is all mixed together, we'll see what works best.
08:50And probably both of them will work pretty good.
08:52How was work?
08:54It was dandy.
08:56You served coffee?
08:58Yes.
09:00Did you drink any?
09:02I drank a lot.
09:04You better when you start walking.
09:06I can't walk.
09:08No, I can't.
09:10I can't.
09:12I'm just walking in and I see Micah holding him.
09:14They're going north.
09:16Oh, I don't know if they'll see it on the camera.
09:18Look it, there's another group coming.
09:20Yay, they're coming back north!
09:22Woohoo!
09:24That's a good sign.
09:26Now, if we could just get water in our pond.
09:28Mmhmm.
09:30We sat at breakfast this morning
09:33and talked about one day having a pool
09:37and having a little john boat on the water.
09:41Dreaming.
09:43We're living the dream already.
09:45Yeah, tomorrow.
09:47Which is good, we need it.
09:49What's happening over here?
09:51I'm making a sandwich.
09:53Mmhmm.
09:55The master chef.
10:03Nothing simple for Micah.
10:05Are you going to be a chef one day?
10:07Oh!
10:09What?
10:11That's a good idea.
10:13To be a chef.
10:15Some chicken.
10:17From our chickens in our yard.
10:24Mayonnaise.
10:26Swiss and cheddar.
10:28He's got the
10:30chicken frying over here.
10:33He's got his
10:35line up.
10:41Wow, Micah.
10:43I missed all the spices,
10:45but they all went on there.
10:47He told me it's going to be spicy.
10:49Now we're frying it again.
10:51Looks good.
10:53He's taking orders.
10:55Luca's going to get one too.
10:57More butter, why not?
10:59Well, this is the first time I'm adding butter.
11:01Wow, it looks so good.
11:03Thanks, Micah.
11:05Back in the car, you guys be proud of me.
11:07I'm not a shopper, but I have girls
11:09that love to shop, and this is like the third time
11:11in a week we've shopped.
11:13Is that true?
11:15No, it's Monday.
11:17Oh, yeah.
11:19It's Monday.
11:21Yes, but for her birthday we did go shopping too.
11:23Okay, so maybe the second time.
11:25We're doing good.
11:27We're getting out there, getting in the stores
11:30just for fun sometimes, so look around.
11:32Last time it was Goodwill.
11:34We found something so cute at Goodwill.
11:36We should show them when we get home.
11:38There it is. That's the place.
11:40Everything's $5 or less.
11:42Except for in the back where they have a section
11:44called 5 and above.
11:46Are you kidding?
11:48What's the point of that?
11:50We survived the 5 and below store.
11:52I think most of this stuff is not worth it.
11:54I did find some cute lanterns that you hang.
11:56They're very light.
11:59They have solar on the top of them.
12:01They were $5.
12:03I thought they were maybe kind of a good deal.
12:05I got a nice prayer book for $5.
12:07Yes, a gift for her friend.
12:09And I got a watch.
12:11She got a watch, so we found some good deals.
12:13Noelle got candy.
12:15I got 10 pieces of candy
12:17for $1.50.
12:19$1.25, I think.
12:21I found this for Destiny.
12:23She's a little scared of the dark
12:25in her room.
12:27She shares a room with a couple of girls
12:29who are not scared of the dark
12:31and don't want it dark.
12:33We thought maybe we could hang this on the wall
12:35in her room.
12:37It's $5.
12:39She loves Hello Kitty, so I'm told.
12:41I did not know that.
12:43She loves it that much.
12:45I told her I'd bring her something
12:47because she didn't come along.
12:49I was looking for sidewalk chalk.
12:51I got two of these.
12:53They're eggs.
12:56That was not bad for $6.
12:58I got two of those.
13:00We found a few deals.
13:02We were in there a while.
13:04These girls could have shopped for a long time.
13:06A lot longer.
13:08Is that a lemon head?
13:10I got a couple of those, too.
13:12Can someone help me
13:14get my watch out?
13:16They're not even sour.
13:18What?
13:20You're just trying not to make a face.
13:22I can't stop smiling.
13:25We did find a whole section
13:27of Japanese candy.
13:29I sent a picture of the aisle to Judah.
13:31He's like,
13:33where are you?
13:35He'll probably be in there soon.
13:37I guess we're coloring
13:39on the deck,
13:41but it's supposed to rain tomorrow.
13:43It is?
13:45No!
13:47I'm going to wash off the deck
13:49and then we'll start again.
13:51I'm excited again.
13:53Sidewalk chalk brings so much joy.
13:55Is it hard
13:57when they're in the shape of eggs?
13:59Yeah.
14:03Noelle set up
14:05a snack for a coronation
14:07today. Who's being coronated?
14:09Me!
14:11Eli's going to be the prince.
14:13Wow.
14:15I'm not going to be the queen.
14:17Oh, nice.
14:20Pulled out a bunch of meat for the week.
14:22This is all ground pork,
14:24ground beef,
14:26chicken.
14:28I don't know what that's from.
14:30In here we have
14:32some pork chops too.
14:34Oh my goodness, they're so excited.
14:36These all have like
14:38three or four in each of them.
14:40She's still working on that lemon head.
14:42No reaction.
14:44Wow.
14:46Stone cold.
14:49Oh, Micah's going to hang that
14:51over her bunk. That's so cool.
14:57It's just a battery
14:59and then you can turn it off and on.
15:01So she can lay there in bed
15:03and turn it off if it's too bright for her.
15:05Yeah, and she'll be able to have a tent.
15:07Yeah, she can hang a curtain around her bunk
15:09so that the other
15:11girls are not bothered
15:13by her light.
15:15Hopefully everybody is happy.
15:18I'm happy. I'm very happy.
15:20I got this watch.
15:22I paid it with my own money.
15:24I mean at bedtime.
15:26Hopefully everybody's happy.
15:28Yes.
15:42Now that we're home, I thought I'd show you
15:44my goodwill find from the other day.
15:46It's a picnic basket and it's so cute.
15:48It's so rickety and old.
15:50It was $11, I think.
15:52They put stuff in here.
15:54These kids go on a picnic in the property
15:56all the time.
15:58When it's nice weather, it's daily.
16:00They take snacks or they pack up whatever.
16:02They pack up their school, different things.
16:04They're always using our tiny little egg basket
16:06that doesn't fit everything they want.
16:08It will get a lot of use here.
16:10I thought it was really pretty and cool.
16:12I was proud of myself finding a really nice item
16:15because I'm not good at thrift shopping.
16:17I found something that I could actually use.
16:19We haven't quite found it's home yet.
16:21Let's buy the front door for now.
16:23I've already gotten in my sweats
16:25because I'm done.
16:27Here's what happened today.
16:29I made a mistake this morning.
16:31I'm going to sit down for this.
16:33This morning at our big breakfast,
16:35we told the kids
16:37that Jude and Katie have a big
16:39announcement for them today.
16:41I thought Jude and Katie
16:44were coming over this evening.
16:46They are coming over this evening
16:48but not before the little ones are in bed.
16:50They've been guessing all day,
16:52what could Jude and Katie's announcement be?
16:54They're not going to find out now until tomorrow.
16:56Oops!
16:58There's nothing like a day of suspense
17:00but I didn't mean for it to go overnight too.
17:02Some of the kids think
17:04that I have a pregnancy announcement
17:06and I'm using them as a disguise
17:08for gathering everyone
17:10for an announcement.
17:14We love surprises
17:16and suspense around here.
17:18It is our day off.
17:20I had to work for a while today.
17:22I got my work done.
17:24Now Solo's working for a while.
17:26Some days off you have to work a little bit.
17:28I did get the cow stuff out there
17:30by them.
17:32Every time I milk, I'm going to work on
17:34whoever's with me too.
17:36We're just going to work on doing a big
17:38load in the
17:40what do you call it?
17:42The wheelbarrow.
17:44We're going to do a big load every day that we're out there.
17:46Just slowly tackle the problem that we have.
17:48There's a lot of straw right now
17:50where we milk so
17:52that will help keep it
17:54clean over the next few days.
17:56It's actually supposed to rain for a few days
17:58and then snow so it's going to be gross.
18:00I could have spent the whole day
18:02mucking stuff but I decided not to.
18:04I checked on the cows
18:06three times. I just got back from there right now.
18:08They are so happy.
18:11They're just frolicking around their big yard.
18:13They're going to be fine.
18:15We're going to slowly get that thing
18:17cleaned out and figure out
18:19how to do it a little better next winter.
18:21Learning, always learning.
18:25What's happening back there?
18:27We have a big announcement.
18:29We've been waiting for days.
18:31Do you guys have any guesses?
18:33Yes.
18:35You're pregnant.
18:37I'm pregnant? It's their announcement.
18:41You covered it up with bells.
18:43My favorite guess so far is that
18:45me and you are both pregnant with triplets.
18:47Same due date.
18:49That would be insane.
18:51I think it was Noel.
18:53That's a good guess. That would be so fun.
18:55We have six kids.
18:57Six kids on the way.
18:59That's enough that there's six kids?
19:01Just kidding.
19:03Do you have a guess Desi?
19:05No.
19:07I have two guesses.
19:10Do you think you're moving to that house
19:12or we're going on vacation?
19:14Do you have a guess?
19:16No.
19:18Do you have a guess Seth?
19:20No.
19:22Tori, I'm afraid to have you guess.
19:24Do you know?
19:26I already know.
19:28I had to trick you.
19:30I did?
19:32I don't remember that.
19:34I acted like I already knew.
19:36I had my best guess and then you confirmed it.
19:38You tricked me.
19:40Maybe we're actually giving everyone a new announcement.
19:42I'm not going to guess.
19:44Maybe I don't know.
19:46I have a guess.
19:48I have a guess.
19:50I know.
19:52You don't?
19:54I know.
19:56I don't keep secrets very good in this house.
19:58I really don't.
20:00I really don't know.
20:02Why don't we just see the announcement?
20:04I don't know.
20:07Come on.
20:09Okay.
20:11Should we tell them?
20:13Sure.
20:15We are moving to the small house.
20:17Yay!
20:19Not pregnant.
20:21No babies on the way.
20:23Oh man.
20:25I didn't know that.
20:27I should have told you.
20:29Next time.
20:31Next announcement.
20:33Are you guys excited?
20:36Yes.
20:38Listen.
20:40You cannot just go to their house and walk in anytime.
20:42You still have to ring the doorbell.
20:44And ask me first.
20:46Yeah.
20:48Exactly.
20:50No telescopes.
20:54So exciting.
20:56Do you get it Seth?
21:00What are you guys most excited about?
21:02Living in the little house over there.
21:04The sunrise in the morning.
21:06I miss when I lived there by myself every morning.
21:08Almost every morning.
21:10If I didn't stay up too late the night before.
21:12I would try to get up before sunrise.
21:14And I would go make coffee and sit out on the porch.
21:16Or even just sit in the kitchen.
21:18With the windows open.
21:20And the sunrise.
21:22Facing the east is.
21:24Unlike anything else.
21:26But also.
21:28I like living out here.
21:30Excited to garden.
21:33I'm excited to learn.
21:35About homesteading.
21:37More I think.
21:39And just gardening.
21:41Yeah.
21:43And you love the trails walking.
21:45Oh yes.
21:47I love being out here and going on walks.
21:49And I know Judah missed the ducks so much.
21:51They're his best friends.
21:55I'm excited for space right now.
21:57I have a tiny yard and a tiny house.
21:59Oh yes.
22:02We're a little bit further out.
22:04So that's why we're so hesitant for a while.
22:06Yeah.
22:08Just to see if it works for us.
