A set standard for disposable diapers and other baby products will be developed in the near future, according to the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry.

Responding to Datuk Mumtaz Md Nawi (PN-Tumpat) during the minister's question and answer session on Wednesday (Feb 26), Deputy Minister Fuziah Salleh acknowledged that the existing safety standards for baby diapers have "a lot of overlaps and also gaps," and stressed that the ministry will begin engaging with all agencies, including the Health Ministry and Chemistry Department, to set safety standards for other baby products, including disposable diapers.

Fuziah also highlighted that the ministry has already implemented safety standards for baby toys, particularly regarding the use of potentially toxic paint.

00:00As a mother of small children, I am also concerned about the waste in our country.
00:20For your information, there are not many complaints about the waste in our country.
00:27Let's take a look at the complaints we have received.
00:32Since 2015, there have only been four complaints.
00:37The first one is related to fake goods.
00:41The second one is related to waste that has been disposed of out of date.
00:48It has caused a lot of confusion.
00:51Those are the complaints we have received.
00:53I would like to inform you that if the complaint is related to fake goods,
00:59it is in the jurisdiction of the KPDN.
01:01In one case in 2017, we have taken action against a company in Sungai Petani
01:11which is involved in the waste disposal of fake goods.
01:18However, the second question is related to the development of standards.
01:29I think this is a very important issue for us to address.
01:37In Malaysia, we have 15 agencies involved in standards,
01:43including CRIM, Medical Device Authority, etc.
01:48In relation to fake goods, I have to make it clear that there are many overlaps and gaps.
02:00For example, where CRIM has conducted research on chemical and consumer products,
02:07where CRIM has conducted testing on sanitary towels and baby diapers.
02:17However, in relation to the development of standards,
02:21I would like to make it clear that under Article 1999,
02:30the KPDN has the power under Section 19,
02:36which states that the minister can, through regulations,
02:40establish safety standards in relation to
02:44a. any item or class of item
02:47b. any service or class of service
02:51This is the power to establish standards, as Mr. Tumpad asked earlier.
02:58So, taking this power, the KPDN will start its process
03:06to develop standards in relation to baby items.
03:10For your information, Mr. Tumpad,
03:13we need to work with other agencies, such as KKM, the Ministry of Chemistry, etc.
03:18However, I would like to make it clear that the KPDN standards
03:22have also developed standards in relation to baby toys.
03:25We have already prepared the standards for toys.
03:29But, God willing, for baby products,
03:31we will start the process to engage with all agencies
03:36and develop safety standards for baby products, including toys.
