It's our love your school and this time we visit the rather lovely St Dominics School in Brewood.
Transcript
00:00So we're here at St. Dominic's School in Brood, a rather special school, and we're with Headteacher.
00:04Introduce yourself, sir.
00:06Hello, my name is Peter McNabb.
00:08How long have you been here then, Peter?
00:10So I've been here for 13 years in total.
00:13Cool. And what's special about your school then? For people in the area that don't know it, tell us a little bit about it.
00:21So one of the things which is important to us is our motto, which is inspiring growth in mind, body and spirit.
00:28Spirit. So these are three things which are key to us because we believe that children are not one dimensional, but they're 3D.
00:37And we need to make sure that we develop the whole person and not just look at one part of it.
00:42So we make sure that we put emphasis on the mind, the body and the spirit.
00:47And it's mixed boys and girls. That's right, isn't it?
00:49That's correct.
00:50What ages do you cater for then?
00:53So we cater for the nursery all the way through to age 18.
00:57And how many pupils roughly?
01:00So we have 100 children in the nursery and that's looked after by the little big nursery.
01:06But then from reception to year 13, we have 320 students at the school, which is roughly roundabout capacity.
01:15Oh, yeah. We're having a little chat with Cameron.
01:17You were saying, you know, you're not struggling to get people in, are you?
01:21There's a lot of people that want to come here.
01:22No, that's right. Yes.
01:23So, lads, how are you doing?
01:25Good, thank you.
01:26So what are you doing? Are you studying at the minute then? Is this for exams?
01:30We're just doing some maths work to revise some subjects that we need to cover.
01:34And how's your maths skills? How are you doing?
01:36I'm doing very well, thank you.
01:37Yeah, yeah.
01:37So what's special about your school then? We chatted to the headteacher. It sounds like a pretty decent place really, yeah?
01:44Yeah, very good. I think the best part, in my opinion, is the sports opportunities which we've presented with.
01:51Yeah.
01:51Because I don't think we get the same opportunities if we're in different schools.
01:55Okay, yeah, yeah.
01:56And get to do lots outside of school and inside of school.
01:59And what sort of sport are you into, Jack?
02:02I enjoy playing football, to be fair.
02:04Okay.
02:04I like the sport, the summer sport, the range that they do is a great variety to everyone.
02:10They seem to find, whatever sport anyone does, they seem to find a way to be able to show everyone how to play it and give us a very good light off.
02:19Which is quite a broad range of stuff, yeah.
02:22Jack, what about you? What favourite subject? Go on.
02:25I like business.
02:26Business, okay, yeah.
02:27I really like the teacher.
02:28Yeah, yeah.
02:29It's really nice.
02:30Give the teacher a shout out then. What's the teacher's name?
02:32Mrs. Glover.
02:33Well done, Mrs. Glover. You're obviously inspiring, Jack.
02:35So what would you, is that what you'd like to go on to do? The world of business or any ideas at the minute?
02:41I'm still looking at options.
02:42Yeah, yeah.
02:42I'm not sure yet.
02:43Well, we'll leave you to carry on studying for your maths, lads, and good looking those exams coming up.
02:48Thank you very much.
02:49So what's some of the facilities you've got here then? You're not lacking. Just talk us through some of the spots you've got here.
02:56Okay. So we have got, first of all, for the academic side of things. We've got four bespoke labs and two computer science. We have a drama studio and a bespoke sixth form centre.
03:11And then for sporting provision, we have a massive sports hall, which is used by the general public on an evening or on a weekend. Obviously, we're able to use it during the day.
03:22We've got sports fields. We've got tennis courts. And just recently, we are completing, even today, our brand new climbing frame prep play area. So we're very excited about that.
03:35Fantastic. And I've seen a little sign just in reception there. You've got some students musically creative. They're doing a little Oasis tribute gig coming up. So there's some stuff happening here that's a bit out there, a bit off the wall.
03:48Yes, that's right. We do love doing things which are a little bit different. We think it's important to, not only for our own children, but also to give back to the wider community as well.
03:58So we do have a Noasis night, which is coming up. But we do fantastic school shows, which go out to the Wolverhampton Arena Theatre. That's for the prep show and also for the senior show. And we have amazing trips as well.
04:12So there's lots of little quirky little things that we do as a school, which the children love, but the parents love that as well.
04:19Hello, young lady. What's your name?
04:21My name is Isabel Richards.
04:23Isabel. And you're into your piano then. You're going to play us a tune. What sort of music do you listen to for pleasure then?
04:30I listen to loads of rock music, pop music. I love music from the past. So like Queen, David Bowie and stuff like that.
04:39Cool. And are your parents musical?
04:43No.
04:43No? So, yeah, yeah. And what are you going to play for us then? If you could play us a bit of something, that'd be lovely.
04:49Rhapsody.
04:49Oh, wow. Okay. Yeah, right in at the deep end. Thank you.
04:53Rhapsody.
04:59Let's get those.
05:29And you're pulling in pupils, not just from Brood, but, you know, the appeal kind of reaches
05:51out as far as, talk us through so many areas, Stafford, Wolverhampton.
05:56Yeah, that's right. So we've got eight buses which go out picking up children because Brood
06:01is quite small, a lovely little quaint little village. But we pull children from Stafford,
06:06from Newport, from Telford, Bridge North, Wolverhampton and Cannock, that big area there.
06:12Great stuff. Well, we look forward to having a little look around the school.
06:15The boys are studying, but girls can study too. How are you doing, ladies? You okay?
06:19Good, thank you.
06:20So who have we got? What's your name, young lady?
06:22Michaela.
06:23What's special, what's nice about your school? Tell me something about it.
06:27What's special about St Dominic's is that we're all like a big family here.
06:32Okay, yeah, yeah. So there's that nice kind of atmosphere everyone gets on.
06:36Yeah.
06:37Yeah, yeah. You'd all echo that and agree with that, yeah?
06:39Yeah.
06:40Cool.
06:41And who's gonna do best at these maths exams, boys or girls then? What do you think?
06:45Go!
