JP and BMitch discuss the state of the Capitals vs. Hurricanes series after Washington suffered a tough Game 3 loss in North Carolina.
Transcript
00:00So, obviously, B, there's a huge matchup tonight for the Caps.
00:03And Saturday, I watched.
00:07I was locked in.
00:08I think this is kind of crazy because they didn't get a goal.
00:13I think the first period Saturday against the Canes
00:17might have been the best they've played throughout the playoffs.
00:20But they weren't able to get goals.
00:25And Ovi missed a breakaway chance.
00:28They just – they looked so good.
00:30Anders made – excuse me.
00:35My voice is all scratchy.
00:36I think it's pollen still.
00:37I don't know what's going on.
00:38Oh, there's a lot down there, bro.
00:39Dude, it's getting me.
00:40I told you.
00:42But, you know, they couldn't break through and get a goal.
00:48And then Carolina scores early.
00:50And that's fine.
00:51You're down 1-0.
00:52No big deal.
00:53But they just – they just – it looked like they were so despondent
01:02after the second goal.
01:04I don't know.
01:05The second goal was a little soft.
01:07It was the first soft goal they had given up in this series.
01:09And it just looked like the air got let out of the balloon.
01:13And what this team has done all year is bounce back.
01:19You know what I mean?
01:19Short-term memory.
01:21And they are composed of the individuals to do it.
01:26But Carolina's good, man.
01:28Oh, yeah.
01:29They are.
01:30But, you see, like, I think a lot of people try to downplay Carolina's method
01:35by throwing a lot of pucks at the net.
01:39But what they also do well is they hinder you from being in their zone.
01:46So they live at your zone throwing pucks at the net.
01:49And basically what that does, it gives them more opportunities.
01:52It raises their – listen, their percentage of – their chance of scoring goes way up
01:57if they're in your zone throwing 60, 70 pucks at the net in all types of ways.
02:02Because we notice most goals come off of a rebound.
02:08And if they constantly throw them and your goalie is knocking it back,
02:12somebody's going to take a chance.
02:13He's going to be out of position eventually.
02:15But if you are not in their zone harassing the hell out of them
02:18and throwing pucks at the net, you don't score very often.
02:23So we got to find a way to pick up a little bit of what they do.
02:28Listen.
02:29Dude, they did.
02:29The first period on Saturday, I feel like they had control.
02:32Well, you need to get some scores out of that.
02:35And what I've learned – and we've discussed this.
02:38I've talked about this with Ahmed.
02:39And we've heard some of the people we have come on.
02:43They try to make the perfect pass, and they want to take the perfect shot.
02:48Take the damn shot.
02:50Yeah.
02:50Okay?
02:51If you wait until the shot is perfect, guess what's going to happen?
02:54The goalie is going to be in a position to stop it.
02:56Or somebody else has come along.
02:58Remember I told you when I would run a punt, I'm running full speed at one dude
03:03to make him make a decision.
03:05But if I start running sideways, I'm going to allow more people in that area
03:10to take a shot.
03:11In hockey, what I'm noticing, the more you play around before firing it,
03:16the goalie gets in a better position, and other people get around to help him
03:20by blocking shots from you.
03:23Got to take it, man.
03:24Are you at all – how are you feeling about their chances tonight, B?
03:34I mean, I think they come out and play the hockey that we've seen them do.
03:38And they're capable of winning the game.
03:41But if they come around messing around, they're going to be in trouble.
